Marilyn Maneuver

A female character's skirt or dress being lifted by the wind; sometimes it can instead be done with a Man in a Kilt. May or may not result in a Panty Shot, depending on the presence or lack of underwear, the angle it's seen from, and the victim's reaction time (for some reason, they always tend to be quicker on the draw when it's seen from the front). Bonus points if the wind is sudden and unexpected, causing the woman to shriek and try to push the skirt back down. Oftentimes the woman actually enjoys the experience, which sends this trope into (non-violent) Too Kinky to Torture territory. Rule 34 most definitely applies here, as the subject serves as Fetish Fuel for a fairly wide audience.

The iconic example, of course, is Marilyn Monroe's white dress in The Seven Year Itch. However, Kelly LeBrock's scene from The Woman in Red is also well known, and is frequently parodied in Europe (particularly Italy), perhaps because The Woman in Red itself is nearly a shot-for-shot remake of the 1976 French film Un éléphant ça trompe énormément, also known as Pardon Mon Affaire.

• A male kilt example with this Sierra Mist commercial, featuring Patton Oswalt stepping out of a St. Paddy's Day parade to do The Marilyn Maneuver. Quoth an onlooker, "That's just wrong, Dad."
• Sometimes seen in commercials from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s for products like pantyhose (back when a lot more women wore them than do today), Nair (see Image Links above), or any other product designed to make a woman's legs look nicer.
• In a 1988 Australian ad for Avis Super Savers, the Avis Lady opens a car door and the air conditioner blows up her skirt as she tries to keep it in place. Aside from a sliver of her panties, which match her red skirt, the exposure is mostly averted. Several male drivers enjoy the view from behind her and they hoot, and holler, with delight.
• In a 2005 Dodge Charger SXT commercial, a black woman's dress billows from her side as the ad's titular vehicle passes by her. There was also another commercial similar to this and the moment included, but that featured a white woman.

Anime and Manga

• Asuka's introduction in Neon Genesis Evangelion.
• Several times in Mahou Sensei Negima. Jack Rakan even has a technique that's solely meant to invoke this trope after he's stolen his opponents' panties.

• • Yue accidentally does it to herself once when she's trying to demonstrate some wind magic.
  • Also used early in the manga as a side effect of Negi's sneezes when they don't cause Clothing Damage.
• At least once in Love Hina, too--when they're returning from Pararakelse.
• When Shamal from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha uses her magical device Klarer Wind to heal the protagonists, her dress does this.
• Natsuki in the fourth episode of Mai-HiME. And she wasn't wearing panties.
• Happens to Ling Ling in Steam Detectives, providing Narutaki with a valuable clue to a recent string of robberies. Unfortunately for him, she interprets his comments completely differently...
• In the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, this is parodied on one of the Omake pages, where Al's loincloth blows up.
• Subverted in Hayate the Combat Butler when Hayate is worried about this happening at at least two different points, both girls cheerfully announce that they are actually wearing shorts underneath their skirts so if he makes some wind that is okay!
  • But also played straight when he does this to Maria while demonstrating his new Finishing Move.
• Shugo spies two female PCs in the middle of this in .hack//DUSK. Someone on the dev team for The World must have done quite a bit of research, as Shugo is quite enamored with the "bump mapping."
• It happened in an Imagine Spot to Ash's mother Delia in Pokémon when walking to a movie premiere on a windy day.
• And an accidental one occurs in Ah! My Goddess Chapter 5 when Sayoko pressures Keiichi date her and boy... does the System Force responds!
• Happens to Haruko in Slam Dunk, when Sakuragi is running around like the Large Ham he is.
• The indirect cause of the entire plot of Bakemonogatari.
• Yuuji's bright idea in Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu, complete with the white dress, at least in Yuuji's head, that is.
• Happens to some passing schoolgirls in Chobits, just as Chi happens to be on a quest for underpants.
• Seen in a chapter of Keroro Gunsou, when Momoka is shown doing this as part of her "sex appeal" training.
• In Spirited Away, this is what happens when Haku is trying to keep Chihiro from being discovered.
• There is a Once an Episode gag in Maicchingu Machiko Sensei where the main character's skirt if flipped up one way or another. She always ends up in this pose.
• At the end of an otherwise serious episode of Case Closed, where Kogoro discovers one of his old friends resorted to murder, he cheers himself up by looking out the window of his second floor office during a gusty day.
• In the OVA, Dragon Fist, Fuyuka Katano has this from behind when she runs across a bridge. The skirt of her school uniform billows high enough to give a flash of her panties.
• In the Digimon Adventure 02 episode, "Digimon World Tour Pt. 1", Mimi's skirt lifts up somewhat from the back as a plane she was guiding to land flies over her.
  • In "Digimon World Tour Pt. 2", Catherine's dress flutters from behind when she's riding in the sidecar of T.K.'s uncle's motorcycle, but nothing is shown.
• Sometimes this is the case with Lana from Future Boy Conan when her dress gets caught in a gust.
• Koumi from Rail Wars! in her first appearance. As her dress gets wavy and rises, Naoto notices her and there's a panty peek from the front before she coyly tugs down her dress.
• Luna has this from behind in the Peter Pan no Bouken episode, "Goodbye Peter Pan! The Land of Dreams and Adventures" during her confrontation with her evil half.
• In the Black Lagoon anime, the back of Greenback Jane's skirt billows whenever she runs fast enough to cause a draft.
• In The Daichis: Earth's Defense Family episode, "Earth's Final Day", Dai flips several female students' skirts and dresses, causing this effect and exposing their underwear, humiliating them. He also causes Junko's dress to flip when he runs passed her with such a strong updraft, it covers her upper body.
  • In "The Broken Family", Dai flips Junko's dress, exposing her periwinkle panties in front of his dad.
• Occurs with Dorothy Gale from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz whenever there's a tornado in "Dorothy Meets the Munchkins". Also, caused when she jumps up and down.
• The queen from the 1980 remake of Twelve Months. When an autumnal wind blows her way, she runs in the opposite direction and the back of her dress billows, but nothing underneath it is shown.
• In the Magical Angel Creamy Mami episode, "The Spirit of Summer", Creamy Mami's tutu swirls in the wind caused by the spirit she meets and a spiral of leaves also swirl around the former.
• In the uncensored version of The Vision of Escaflowne episode, "The Girl From The Mystic Moon", the back of Hitomi's skirt is blown up slightly when the Escaflowne takes a step and she tugs on it from behind.
  • Hitomi has another in "The Gallant Swordsman". When the spirit of The Death card comes to life and emerges out of it, swirling around Hitomi and the motion causes her skirt to flap around in the wind the spirit creates.
• In the "Countdown" episode of Robotech, the back of Lynn's dress flaps as she falls.
• In the Mazinger Z episode, "The Finishing Blow! The Mecha-Beast Gorgon", Yumi Sayaka's shirt gets blown up caused by the draft of a motorcycle, exposing white panties before she holds it down and puts on her matching skirt.
• In the original Devilman series's episode, "The Demon Bird, Silene", Miki's nightgown billows and she flashes her panties as she flees from a beheaded doll's head.
• Yuri in the Dirty Flash Pair OVA episode, "Steam Hotsprings Romantic Tour". Her long skirt gets caught in an updraft caused by the air blown by a helicopter propeller. As her skirt begins to billow, Kei informs her about her panties showing and Yuri promptly pulls it down as she sits in a seat in the helicopter.
• In the short, Control Bear: Wonder Garden, this occurs with a girl whose culotte shorts blow up in a draft caused by an unusual teddy bear. The stuffed bear magically swaps the school uniform the girl was wearing with the clothes a mannequin was wearing. The skirt of the uniform the mannequin wears also receives a draft from the front, but the mannequin is shown from behind.
• Several of these with Sheeta from Laputa: Castle in the Sky, including her dress wavering slightly, revealing no more than her slip or petticoat when she's on a building and her nightgown billowing, and showing no more than her thighs when she runs from one aircraft to another.

Comic Strips

• This happens to Fanny in De Kiekeboes album "De Medusa Stichting".
• An old "The Lighter Side Of..." cartoon in Mad Magazine featured men reminscing how much fun it was to let the ventilator lift up women's dresses when they were younger. Nowadays they consider it to be less fun, since women's skirts gradually became smaller.

Films -- Animation

• In Despicable Me 3, a red-headed woman's black dress billows briefly as a small dog runs between her legs and she screams in terror of the giant, mechanical Balthazar terrorizing the city.
• In Scooby-Doo and the Loch Ness Monster, Shannon Blake has this as she's leaned over the railing of a barge as it tilts and sails. Her skirt flutters from behind, but as the front of her is shown, any upskirt views are averted. Also, in a flashback, her nightgown is blown by the wind when she opens a window, but her gown rises no higher than up to her calves.
• Mirabel from Encanto has this at one point quickly and briefly caused by the rain storm's wind during the song, "We Don't Talk About Bruno". Later, a couple little girls have this slightly as their skirts are blown sideways due to the motion of the horse passing by them.
• In Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, Belle's motion when she's ice skating causes the back of her dress to billow.
  • In a flashback, Mrs. Potts's dress begins to blow up from the wind created by Fortè. But she manages to keep it in place before she and the other servants are turned into enchanted objects.
• In Disney's Alice In Wonderland, this occurs with Alice at one point after she suddenly stop floating downward for a moment before falling after entering the rabbit hole.

Films -- Live-Action

• Marilyn Monroe's scene was copied in Pulp Fiction, by a Marilyn impersonator. Since she was a waitress at a Fifties-theme restaurant, this is presumably a regular occurrence. Unlike Marilyn in her movie, the impersonator lets her skirt go all the way up.
• Kelly Lebrock in The Woman In Red.
• Darkly parodied in the film Insignificance, in which Marilyn Monroe's The Actress's skirt billows up in response to a nuclear blast and catches fire...
• Parodied - gruesomely - in The House Bunny, where Anna Faris' character tries the Marilyn Maneuver while standing over an open manhole... and gets scalded. We then see her recovering from her injuries with a male companion in a restaurant, and her legs are heavily bandaged with gauze - and those areas that aren't bandaged have ugly welts on them. It's as if the filmmakers wanted to guilt-trip the audience by saying: "You bastards! You were laughing and hooting at this!"
• Happened near the beginning of the 2001 movie Tart starring Dominique Swain, but wasn't that good. The video cover was better than the actual scene. She wore a mini Catholic school skirt and was already walking halfway out of frame by the time her skirt went up. You need Widescreen or to zoom out to even see it properly!
• In Wrongfully Accused, Leslie Nielsen ends up in this situation while infiltrating a Scottish drill routine, complete with kilts. His legs are suspiciously shapely.
• Bruce from Bruce Almighty uses his new God powers to blow up a woman's skirt.
  • The sequel Evan Almighty has this poster.
• In the second The Italian Job, Lyle talks about a stereo "so loud, it blows off women's clothing." We see him actually use this at the end, but the results of the blaring stereo are avoided through a Sexy Discretion Shot.
• In The Awful Truth, a nightclub singer does a tasteless number called "My Dreams Are Gone With The Wind" in which her skirts are disturbed by blasts of air from below every time she sings "gone with the wind."
• In the 1982 Scott Baio comedy Zapped, a Fanservice Extra at the prom does one by climbing on a table while a strong wind blows through the gym. She ends up getting more than she bargained for when her dress is then blown completely off of her. NSFW (the woman ends up topless)
• Leslie Ann Warren does a dance routine in Victor/Victoria in honor of Chicago (The Windy City!), where wires simulating the wind lift, and eventually pull off her dress.
• The Covenant: the boys use their powers to settle a bet on what kind of panties a waitress at the bar is wearing by blowing up her skirt. The boy who bets that she is Going Commando wins.
• Danger Diabolik has Valmont's mistress doing this, while standing stupidly close to an airplane's trap door.
• The 1986 Italian comedy Grandi Magazzini has a scene where two Fanservice Extras dance on a ventilation grate and offer up Panty Shots for our viewing pleasure. One woman is a Kelly LeBrock lookalike wearing the red dress from The Woman in Red. The other is a long-haired blonde wearing Marilyn Monroe's iconic white dress. See Image Links above or this borderline NSFW 40-second video.
• During the opening credits of the 1995 film Panther (which is a fictionalized account of the uprising of The Black Panther Party), there are scenes in which a boy riding a bicycle notices a woman in a green hat and dress named Bernadette is at a bus stop. The boy peddles toward her checking her out and sees a bus driving across the street, heading in their direction. The boy anticipates the draft from the passing bus to blow up Bernadette's dress, which evidently does, she gasps and is mortified. When her dress gets lifted, rather than holding that down, she holds on to her hat to keep that from getting blown away and raises one leg, knee bent forward, to hide part of her unmentionables, which are white panties with matching girdle (or corset). The boy enjoys the view and gets a snicker out of it.
• Also happens in Torque (2004) to show just how fast they're driving... among other things.
• Appears in The Smurfs when Smurfette has the vent blowing up air into her skirt.
• In another racing movie, Driven from 2001, the draft from a speeding race car causes a blonde's (who's standing in line) skirt to lift up, she lets out an abrupt shriek and she turns around while trying to pull it back down in place.
• In the 1998 film, Woo (the eponymous character portrayed by Jada Pinkett Smith), a breeze blows under the helm of her loose-fitting, pink mini dress as she walks down a sidewalk, nearly high enough to show her goodies. A bicyclist ogling at her gets so distracted he doesn't watch where he's going, crashing into the side of a sewer pipe and falling off his bike.
• In 2000's 2001: A Space Travesty, a flight attendant (Stephanie Dumolin-Shaw) climbs up a ladder on a space shuttle and her dress blows up from behind, showing off her nearly nude booty that can still be seen through clear pantyhose (she doesn't seem to be wearing any panties), due to a lack of grravity and Marshal Dix (Leslie Nielson) checks her out.
• Christine gets a big one at the end of Romy and Micheles High School Reunion thanks to the downdraft from a helicopter.
• Daphne McBain (played by Uma Thurman) from 1990's Where the Heart Is. Her skirt blows up from behind, enough to give a flash when runs to a car before getting on the hood upon learning she's been cut off by her parents.
• The opening of the 2002 film Unfaithful has Connie Summers (Diane Lane) struggling against the heavy wind while she carries some shopping bags. Her skirt gets caught by the draft as she battles to keep it in place at the same time.
• In My Father the Hero, some wind comes along and blows up Nicole's skirt while she kisses Ben towards the end.
• Sally Elliot (Lucille Ball) in The Fuller Brush Girl. While climbing down a ladder, smoke from a ship's steam whistle keeps puffing up the back of her skirt.

Literature

• Ginger dreamt this scene in Moving Pictures (which contains innumerable Shout Outs to classic movies).
• Intentionally invoked by Maureen Smith, Lazarus Long's mother (with all that implies), in Robert A. Heinlein's Time Enough for Love, complete with Vapor Wear. Interestingly, the time period in which this occurs significantly predates Marilyn Monroe, but Maureen was always ahead of her time.
• Featured on the cover sleeve to a book by Joan Rivers called "The Life and Hard Times of Heidi Abramowitz" where she imitates Marilyn on the front cover... and intentionally hiking up her dress on the back of the book!

Live Action TV

• One of Russ Abbot's sketch shows played with this trope. A Scotsman walks over a grating and is disconcerted to find the air blowing his kilt up. The next grating he comes to, he's ready for... except that it's an air intake, and pulls his kilt clean off.
• NCIS did a homage when Abby dressed as Marilyn Monroe for the Halloween episode.
  • Also happens to DiNozzo's fantasy of Kate, though in that case she is dressed in a Catholic school uniform.
• Some of the miniskirted female members of Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In had this occur.
• In the mid 1970, Angie Dickinson was dressed in a Marilyn Monroe outfit in an episode of her series Police Woman. A publicity photo showed her skirt blowing all the way up, showing she had on a flesh-colored body suit underneath.
• One of the games on the Spanish Game Show El Gran Juego de la Oca featured each member of the dance squad wearing a Marilyn-style dress and a different colored garter on one leg. After all eight took turns dancing on a wind machine, the contestant then had to slide a colored garter up each girl's other leg that matched the one she was already wearing.
• Bud Bundy rigged an air vent to do this to his date at a school function. It worked perfectly...except Marcy ended up the victim.
• Shirley Brahms for three times (twice her undergarments can be seen) in one episode ("The Club") of Are You Being Served. Mr. Lucas pushes a button on a wall and a draft from a floor vent causes her skirts (she's seen in two, different outfits when this occurs) to billow up due to her being near it as a joke, and put her white bustier/corset with matching knickers on display.
  • The secretary Miss Belfridge tries to keep down her pink dress and avoid flashing her white panties when it flows up from an electric fan in "Monkey Business".
• Happens to Carrie in Sex and the City, where it's played for laughs- after being surprised by a gust of wind that lifts her skirt, she then gets drenched in a sudden downpour of rain.
• A female flutist in one The Benny Hill Show skit has a fly skirt moment when her skirt keeps getting blown up to her face, exposing her white undies, caused by a male tube player being near her and each time he blows into the tuba.

Magazines

• And one really strange Fan Art of Link, printed in Nintendo Power magazine. Kirby's reaction in the drawing pretty much said it all.

Music

• The cover of the Aerosmith album Just Push Play depicts a FemBot doing this.
• In keeping with their name, the cover of Let Me Ride by the Chicagoan soul band, Windy City, features a woman on the cover whose dress gets side-swept by the wind.
• A woman in a white dress channels this trope and the actual Marilyn Monroe in the music video for Miami bass duo, Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)".
• This occurs with a woman on the front cover of Lucky Summer Lady by the Japanese fusion band, The Square (a.k.a. T-Square). Nothing is exposed on the front cover, however, the woman's panty shot is exposed on the back cover.
• In the music video for Usher's "Yeah!" (featuring Lil' Jon and Ludacris), the minidress of a woman Usher's character was talking to blows up in front of him, revealing her blue boy shorts, just as he sings in part of the lyrics, "She looked like she was ready to blow".
• On the cover of the album, Steps, by Japanese city pop/boogie singer, Yurie Kokubu, from the waist down, there's a woman. The depiction is her skirt being raised from the back slightly, giving a peek of her rear. One stocking-and-pantyhose covered leg is lifted beside the other as she's running.

New Media

• In the latest Kelly video, one of the party members does this.
• Don't think that The Eighties did not have a couple these happen...
  • Here at 04:00-- When you're dancing on the ceiling in a long evening dress, watch out when those wily A-C vents start a-blowin'!
  • And though the late Jermaine Stewart had a couple of hits, this video features a blown skirt at 02:25.

Newspaper Comics

• Parodied in this The Argyle Sweater strip. A woman is standing over a subway vent holding her dress like the famous Marilyn Monroe shot...rather than go inside the laundromat and use the clothes dryers there.

Professional Wrestling

• One of the best examples of this trope I've ever seen occurred at WWE's Cyber Sunday pay-per-view (their final one by that name) in October 2008. Since the event took place just before Halloween, the Divas held their second annual Halloween Costume Contest. Candice Michelle (who had missed the previous year's contest due to a neck injury) was prominently featured as Marilyn Monroe from The Seven Year Itch, complete with a blonde wig and a copy of the famous white halter dress. Not about to miss a golden opportunity, WWE had an air jet installed under the entry ramp to the arena to blast Candice's dress as she came down to the ring for the final judging - and the resulting Panty Shot revealed that Candice was wearing the exact same cut of panties that Marilyn had had on in the 1955 film. Candice obviously did her homework.
• And then there was the case of another Diva wearing the white halter dress (which didn't involve the Maneuver, but I just can't resist mentioning it here). D-Generation X were scheduled to compete in a tag team match with Vince McMahon one night in the summer of 2009, but Shawn Michaels and Triple H worried that Vince just wasn't "angry" enough to make an effective combatant. They spent the whole time before the match trying different strategies to goad him to violence, and one of them was sending the atrocious singing Diva Jillian Hall into his office wearing a Seven Year Itch costume and performing Marilyn's birthday song for President Kennedy in her hideous voice (though Marilyn had not been dressed that way when she sang for Kennedy). Vince screamed "GET OUTTA MY OFFICE!" and became steadily more filled with rage as the night wore on, until he was finally ready to compete. (This incident culminated in a Crowning Moment of Funny when commentator Jerry "The King" Lawler noted that Jillian looked a lot "like Monroe"....and then, a moment later, clarified that he meant James!)

Videogames

• One of the characters from Gate Keepers constantly gets her skirt lifted by the wind. In the last ep, she is really an AEGIS agent. And she has a bazooka.
• This is one of Sue's events in Mitsumete Knight. And to make it clear about the reference, the CG obtained through this event is called "The Monroe Effect" in the game's CG Gallery, the Mitsumete Gallery. The event also has a nice Refuge in Audacity moment : when Sue asks the Asian (the player's avatar) if he saw anything, the best answer is to actually tell "They (the panties) were white". This will reassure her, saying that he hasn't seen them then, since he said the wrong colour.
• The tag-team arena in Dead or Alive 2 allows for this with female fighters. It's more interesting than the combat, really.
• The scene is parodied in Discworld II: Mortality Bytes.
• Playing a Castlevania "Sorrow" game? Got the Persephone soul power? Aim the vacuum at a Student Witch.
• Happens to Peach in the Donkey Kong Country stage in Super Smash Bros: Melee.
• One of the cut scenes from Queen's Blade: Spiral Chaos, features a moment when Tomoe, Melpha, Airi, Cute, Ymir, and Jean are walking in a cave when a blast of wind suddenly comes blowing out of nowhere. Each of the former five is shown getting her skirt or dress lifted by it, revealing her unmentionables, with the exception of Melpha, who wears a body suit underneath her dress, but it's still just as revealing. Jean reacts pleasurably at the sight while the others are displeased with him.

Webcomics

• This happened to Richard in Looking for Group.
• Happens regularly in The Devil's Panties during strips where Jennie is at a convention. It involves her armed with an altered leaf blower and hunky guys in kilts. The author, Jennie Breeden, actually sets up gatherings of this nature at most conventions she attends, unless they get shut down by the cops.
• The Inexplicable Adventures of Bob, referenced here by a robot who looks like a walking refrigerator, sadly.
• Happens with both an anonymous Marilyn look alike and a robot's pet Emu in this Freefall strip
• A kilt-wearing man in Blur the Lines performs one of these involuntarily.
• Done without wind in Sinfest. How? Starch. Lots of Starch.

Western Animation

• Male example from Avatar: The Last Airbender: Aang uses airbending to blow up Long Feng's dress to reveal the scar left by Apa's teeth.
• This was played with during the Fairy Godmother's Song in Shrek 2.
• Parodied in the Simpsons episode "Home Away From Homer", when Ned Flanders' moustache is blown around. (He's refusing to bow to pressure to shave it off.)
  • Also happens to Groundskeeper Willie's kilt, and of course underneath he's wearing nothing at all.

• Lois Lane in Superman: The Animated Series, due to a wind blown up from Superman's hasty departure. She comments that she needs to start wearing pants (but never does).

• Spidey uses webs to build a slingshot to get to Oscorp faster and a young woman in a skirt happens to be in his wake resulting in this in The Spectacular Spider-Man's "Reaction"
• Coop speeding in Megas XLR has caused this one more than a few skirted women.
• The Seven Year Itch's instance of this was parodied in a Robot Chicken sketch, wherein the person standing over the vent was "Rowdy" Roddy Piper.
• The Real Ghostbusters episode "Janine, You've Changed" shows Janine doing this (in mid-air, no less) at one point in her rapidfire outfit transformation sequence.
• In the Disney Acid Sequence "Round My Family Tree" of The Tigger Movie, a Marylin Monroe version of Tigger does this only to be blown straight up and across the horizon.
• In the What's New, Scooby Doo? episode "Recipe For Disaster," Velma and Daphne have to hold their skirts down when a high-powered floor dryer is activated.
• Happens to the constellation of Virgo near the end of the song "Zero to Hero" from Hercules as Herc and Pegasus fly through the night sky, causing a nebula surrounding the constellation as if it were wearing a dress to fly up, causing Virgo's dress to blow off as the two fly away.
• Rocko on Rocko's Modern Life posed for a photo while doing this with his shirt. Like it makes a difference when he almost never wears pants.
• Leela in the Futurama episode "Attack of the Killer App" during her humiliating montage after her singing boil is exposed online, she attempts to hide her appearance only for her dress to fly up and the paparazzi group take pictures.
• Nita in The New Shmoo episode, "The Terror of the Trolls", as part of Fred and Barney Meet The Thing . After she tries to stop the Troll King from driving away in a motorboat with a lasso, she's dragged along across the water and her skirt begins to billow, but she promptly and abashedly stops for a moment as she crouches to keep it in place before telling Mickey, and Billy Joe, to assist her.
• Nellie Sparkling Water from the Walter Lantz/Universal Cartoons short, "Nellie, The Indian Chief's Daughter". Rudolph Rathbone blows on her teepee to get her to come out with such force, it's like a hurricane. The teepee is lifted for a moment, as is her dress, revealing her white, shin-length bloomers as she pulls her dress back in place and the teepee hides her again as it's let back down.
• Zia has a few of these in the 2010 The Mysterious Cities of Gold series:
  • In "Back To Barcelona Part 2", her dress billows up to her thighs when she jumps down from a tree.
  • In "The Labyrinth", Zia's dress begins to blow up when it receives a draft after the Golden Dragon is placed on a pedestal and is activated. She catches her dress from the front in time before too much is shown, but her bare rear is exposed briefly.
  • In "The Escape", Zia's dress flows steadily caused by a draft from an airship.
  • In "The Stomach of Buddha", Zia's dress wavers when she, Esteban, and Tao are caught in a dust storm.
  • In "The Nest of the Condor", Zia keeps her dress in place after she and the others enter something similar to a pneumatic tube, then enter a white void where they gradually land.
• In the Disney short, "Casey Bats Again", one of Casey's oldest daughters, Burdine, who is one of the twins and in the mostly purple dress, has this in the kitchen scene when she pretends a rolling pin is a bat. As she swings it, her motion causes her flare dress to get wavy as it rises to her thighs.
• Occurs twice with the Little Red Riding Hood from behind in the Fairy Tale Police Department episode, "Wrong Way for Little Red Riding Hood" when she runs. And she's revealed to wear no underwear underneath. Also, her dress billows to a degree when she jumps down as she exits the cop car.
• In the Terry Toons's Victor the Volunteer short, "Better Late Than Never", the blonde he has to rescue has this when she jumps to avoid the flames surrounding her and she flashes her panties.
• Belinda Maze in the intro of the 1972 Australian animated series, Around the World in Eighty Days. When she bounces on a pogo stick, this causes her dress to fold up and engulf her upper body, exposing her short, light pink bloomers.
• The Statue of Liberty towards the end of Walter Lantz's Cartune short, "Crackpot Cruise". The statue comes to life as a passing tugboat expelling smoke from its stacks passes by and causes the statue's dress to blow up as there's a struggle to prevent more shown than intended.
• Monica in the Dinky Dog episode, "Dinky The Foggy Doggy". As she and Sandy look and call for Dinky, a stormy wind approaches and blows up her skirt up to her thighs, forward, then back.
  • Monica has another one briefly in "Phi Beta Dinky". When she climbs over and jumps down from a wall as part of an obstacle course.
• Daisy in the Quack Pack episode, "Koi Story". After Gil dashes so fast he's a blur and carries her to where the giant fish bowl is, and places her down, his motion causes Daisy's skirt to lift somewhat and she does the one-leg-lift pose.
  • In "Can't Take A Yolk", this occurs with the Mergancer twins, Alexandra and Cassandra. When the Whirl-N-Hurl ride they're in is sped up, both their hair and skirts rise. One of them has another when she leaps for joy as the teenage Donald admits he was the one who caused the ride to go faster.
• Patti in the Doug episode, "Quailman: The Un-Quail Saga". She's in the middle of giving a news report when air coming from a huge vacuum hose causes her skirt to begin to blow up. But as she holds it in place, she gets sucked up by the vacuum hose, attached to a machine that collects beets.
• In the Letters from Felix episode, "Felix in Ancient Greece", Aphrodite descends from Mt. Olympus, appearing before Alexander, and she lets her dress blow, and flow for him to ogle at her to distract him from a competition.
• The spinster/teacher in the ComiColor Cartoons short, "Mary's Little Lamb". Her skirt rises up and down as she pulls on the rope to ring the school bell.
• Princess Bria from the ABC Weekend Special, "The Legend of Lochnagar" when she jumps off of the old man's belly and she's shown to go bear under her dress.
• Little Red Riding Hood from the Casper the Friendly Ghost short, "Once Upon a Rhyme" when she jumps down from a wall to the other side.
  • Goldie in "Casper's Spree Under the Sea". After she and Casper enter the Cave of the Winds, her scales suddenly turn into or simulate a dress when swimming above a vent. She inadvertently flashes her underwear in front of some male fish who are amused by this. Shocked and embarrassed to be caught in this situation, she crosses the ends of her tail fin, which simulate as legs, hurriedly swims away, and Casper follows. Also, when Casper swims above a vent, he folds upward like a sheet would when caught in a draft.
• Kirsten from the Rugrats episode, "Little Dude". Her skirt flutters when she runs as she and her friends search for Tommy, then again as she, and the others, run towards Ramon after he finds him.
• Princess Toadstool in the Super Mario World episode, "Born to Ride". The back of her dress billows somewhat when she rides behind Yoshi on his motorbike.
• Crystal from the James Bond Jr. episode, "Dutch Treat". Her skirt puffs up slightly above her knees as she and James run up the stairs in a stairwell.
• Jessica for a split second in the Rick and Morty episode, "Rick and Relaxation" when she and Rick fall down through a portal and into a room.

Real Life

• In less gender-sensitive times, many American amusement parks featured hidden boardwalk vents for this very purpose.
  • As shown in the this Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post cover from the 1920s.
  • Values Dissonance, nothing. As YouTube will confirm, there are still quite a few carnivals out there with "skirt-blowing" funhouses. (They're really popular in Europe, apparently.) And it should be pointed out that their female "victims" consider it all in good fun.
• One anecdote from the 1914 Christmas Truce tells the story of a Scottish regiment and a German regiment starting an impromptu soccer game...and then the wind comes along and reveals the Scots are Going Commando...(the Scots won the game).
• Taylor Swift suffered this during a recent concert when a wind machine blew her skirt (the linked article called it a Wardrobe Malfunction, which it clearly isn't).
• At the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, Kosovar actress Arta Dobroshi posed for a photocall to promote the upcoming Trois Mondes. A very ill-timed gust of wind that struck just as she did a little pirouette sent her (normally quite modest) blue skirt flying a bit too high, just as all the cameras were going off. Some publications couldn't resist the chance to use the term "Marilyn Monroe moment", and as if that wasn't bad enough, Miss Dobroshi did not happen to be wearing panties at the time.
