Mario Sports Mix

Mario Sports Mix (2010) for the Wii is the Spiritual Successor to Mario Hoops 3-on-3. Like its predecessor, it was developed by Square Enix, and features teams of up to three characters facing off in certain sports on fields with different gimmicks. It features three new sports and one sport returning from the aforementioned Mario Hoops 3-on-3: volleyball, dodgeball, hockey, and basketball.

Tropes used in Mario Sports Mix include:

• Amazing Technicolor Battlefield: The Star Ship. Especialy outside of tournaments, when crystals that you can collect rain down during the match. The Behemoth's battlefield counts as well.
• Badass Mustache: The usual offenders, namely Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Waluigi.
• Banana Peel: One of the available items.
• Beehive Barrier: The White Mage can make one in front of herself.
• Big Boo's Haunt: Luigi’s Mansion and Ghoulish Galleon.
• Black Mage: The Trope Namer himself appears.
• Blackout Basement: Luigi's Mansion again.
• Blow You Away: Inverted In Name Only with Luigi in his special move, where he takes out his vacuum.
• Casino Park: Bowser Jr. Blvd., which lacks the slot machine but has icons on the ground that affect the points when a player scores while standing on one.
• Combination Attack: It's possible to pull one off during the battle with the Behemoth.
• Confusion Fu/Lethal Joke Character: The Tricky characters (Black Mage, Moogle, Cactuar, and Slime) usually have one stat that they excel in, while the other two are utterly awful and plain bad respectively. They make up for this by having a repertoire of strange moves up their sleeve (Black Mage), breaking their max stat (Cactuar), or having their excellent stat be one that people usually doesn't expect (Slime).
• Convection, Schmonvection: In Bowser's Castle.
• Cool Airship: The Star Ship stage.
• Crosshair Aware: You can tell where your enemy is aiming their special shots.
• Crossover: With Final Fantasy
• Dark Is Not Evil: Black Mage, sort of.
• Death From Above: Invoked by several characters' special shots. Additionally, the Behemoth has an attack that makes meteors rain down from the sky.
• Disk One Nuke: Sort of. It’s possible to unlock White Mage, Black Mage, and Ninja earlier than normal.
• Doppelganger Attack: The Ninja’s special ability.
• Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Ninja, White Mage, and Black Mage are known only by their class.
• Final Boss New Dimension: You get teleported to a new arena for the battle with the Behemoth.
• Flash Step: The Ninja does a few.
• Fragile Speedster: Toad, Diddy Kong, Bowser Junior, and Cactaur, who turns this trope Up to Eleven.
• Gang Plank Galleon: The Ghoulish Galleon is more of a Derelict Graveyard version.
• Giant Space Flea From Nowhere: First the Final Fantasy gang, followed by the Behemoth.
• Green Hill Zone: Peach’s Castle and to a slightly lesser extent, Daisy Garden.
• Green Thumb: Toad can spawn mushrooms to hamper opponents, while Daisy does something similar with a small garden.
• Guest Fighter: Ninja, White Mage, Black Mage, Moogle, Cactuar and Slime.
• Haunted House: Luigi's Mansion has ghosts as obstacles.
• Highly-Visible Ninja: Red isn't exactly a stealthy color. Unless, of course, it's a dark red.
• Holy Hand Grenade: The White Mage's specialty.
• Homing Projectile: Red Shells, which act somewhat similar to their Mario Kart counterparts.
• Inconveniently-Placed Conveyor Belt: Wario Factory
• Instant Awesome, Just Add Ninja: As a Secret Character.
• Instant Runes: The White Mage uses this instead of the circle used by other characters to aim their special abilities. She also uses them in place of a dive in volleyball. They also appear when your team uses their special attack against the Behemoth.
• Jack of All Stats: Mario. As well as Luigi, Yoshi, and Ninja. The Mii as well.
• Jungle Japes: DK Dock.
• Me's a Crowd: The Ninja can do this.
• Metal Slime: Appears a color pallete for Slime.
• Mighty Glacier: Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Wario.
  • Glacier Waif: Slime.
• Mineral MacGuffin: The Four Crystals, in grand Final Fantasy tradition.
• Non-Elemental/Pure Energy/Combined Energy Attack: This is presumably what the Mii uses in his/her special move.
• Palmtree Panic: Koopa Troopa Beach.
• Petal Power: Princess Daisy uses flowers for her special moves.
• Pinball Zone: Waluigi Pinball, which first appeared in the Mario Kart games.
• Playing with Fire: Black Mage notably uses a fire spell to hit out-of-reach volleyballs. Mario also uses fire in his special move of course.
• Power Crystal: Again, a Final Fantasy tradition, presumably because the game was developed by Square Enix.
• Ridiculously Cute Critter: KUPO!
• Rose-Haired Girl: White Mage has either pink or very strawberry blond hair.
• Secret Character: Moogle, Cactuar, Ninja, Black Mage, and White Mage, all from Final Fantasy, as well as a Slime.
• Shock and Awe: Black Mage mostly uses thunder spells to block or stop incoming balls. He also uses it in his special move. Waluigi also fires electric balls when performing his special move.
• The Computer Is a Cheating Bastard: Hey... how did the AI get all those coins so quickly? This espescially applies in hockey, where one goal leads near the end of a game are not safe at all. The computer will usually gather up five or six coins in a matter of 10 seconds, and then score. Now your one goal lead has turned into a five goal deficit. You're pretty much screwed after that.
• True Final Boss: The Behemoth, which can only be faced when the Final Fantasy team has been defeated in every sport. A harder version, the Behemoth King, is fought in Sports Mix mode.
• Weak but Skilled: Peach, Daisy, White Mage, Waluigi, Moogle, and Black Mage, who all have high Technique ratings to make up for low power and/or speed.
• What Happened to the Mouse?: The Final Fantasy team disappears after you fight the Behemoth.
• White Mage: The Trope Namer makes an appearance.
