- Award Snub: His lack of success at the Oscars was kind of a running joke until 2007. Probably the best moment came from Oscar host Jon Stewart after Three 6 Mafia won for the song "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp." "For those of you keeping score: Martin Scorsese 0, Three 6 Mafia 1."
- Magnum Opus: Goodfellas is often cited as his. Raging Bull and Taxi Driver are also strong competitors.
- Never Live It Down: In late 2019, Scorsese infamously denounced the Marvel Cinematic Universe as "popcorn heavy", likening it to an amusement park of movies. While this did ruffle some feathers, especially when he also admitted to never watching an MCU film, this largely became ancient history by mid-2020, most MCU fans just dismissing him as an out of touch old man, especially when James Gunn opined that Scorsese's main reason for offering his opinion was to get people to listen to him, and the MCU just making a jab at him in Black Widow. But the MCU's Vocal Minority refuses to forget this statement, turning Scorsese into some kind of Scapegoat Creator who has single-handedly stoked hatred for the MCU (and other superhero films) in the film industry (despite many in Hollywood making similar critiques of the MCU long before 2019) and hold him responsible for negative reviews of the franchise. Though Scorsese goes conspicuously unmentioned if those fans dislike an MCU entry.
- Small Reference Pools: To say that you'd need a fairly thorough background in film to actually catch all the homages and tributes worked into your average Scorsese movie is an understatement. For example, DeNiro's "You talkin' to me?" is a reference to Shane.
- Tough Act to Follow: Scorsese has made 23 films, most of which are not gangster movies. If somebody says "I love Scorsese movies!", odds are pretty good they're not going to talk to you about "Kundun".
