You never would've thought Son Goku and Naruto are voiced by women. OK, maybe you would have since they have rather feminine voices, but would it surprise you to know Monkey D. Luffy is also voiced by a female? No? Well, the point is: veteran voice actress Mayumi Tanaka (b. 1955). Her birth name is Mayumi Abe and she's been in the business for quite a while (well over 40 years!). Before being cast as the voice of the lovable captain of the Thousand Sunny, she was also the resident lancer in Dragon Ball, Krillin. Since then, Mayumi's been cast in plenty of male, Shonen roles, occasionally voicing The Hero.
Some of her notable roles include:
- Babe in the Japanese dub of the Babe movies
- Jynx in Pokémon
- Kappei Sakamoto in Dash Kappei
- Krillin and Yajirobe in the Dragon Ball franchise
- Lillibit (Willibit in the English version) in The Littl' Bits
- Monkey D. Luffy and Oz in the One Piece franchise
- Mega Man Trigger in Mega Man Legends
- Koenma in Yu Yu Hakusho
- Pazu in Castle in The Sky
- Ryuunosuke Fujinami in Urusei Yatsura
- Wataru Ikusabe in the Chou Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru franchise
- Daiya Tsuwabuki in Gaiking: Legend of Daikuu Maryuu
- Kanna Kirishima in Sakura Wars (she's also sung a bunch of the themes)
- Skippy in the Japanese dub of Animaniacs
- Second voice actress for the no-longer-ever-unsuited Yellow Four after the original actress's sudden departure in Choudenshi Bioman ( and therefore the voice we're hearing throughout the episode of her Heroic Sacrifice.)
- Daniel Witwicky in the Japanese dub of Transformers the Movie
