  • Anticlimax Boss: Dr. Cossack is a real step down from Wily. His Cossack Catcher is really goofy looking when compared to the more threatening Wily Machines, and you practically have to let it hit you for it to be even sort of threatening. This is intentional though, since Cossack's being blackmailed into villainy by Wily, whose machine looks cooler and puts up a much better fight.
  • Breather Boss: Alas, poor Toad Man. He can't do anything to you when you shoot him, aside from get caught in a loop of hopping towards you, being easily dodged, and forced to hop after being shot again until he dies.
    • While it's expected for bosses to be easier when fought with their weakness, Pharoah Man is pathetic if you use the Flash Stopper. He can't move at all when you use it, and you have just enough uses to kill him while he's completely helpless against you.
    • Dust Man can at least put up something of a fight, but his Dust Crusher is still easily led and dodged, and you his vacuum attack won't hurt you unless you just let him suck you towards him.
    • Ring Man's aggressive behavior and seemingly unpredictable AI make him a tough fight, until you realize that it's easy to lock him in a pattern of running from end to end of his boss room and tossing his rings in easily dodged patterns. It still hurts if you get hit, but he looks a lot scarier than he actually is.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Goofy-looking weakling he may be, Toad Man's still got plenty of appeal due to his design breaking from the more traditionally humanoid Robot Master mold and making him look Ugly Cute. Plus, his Rain Flush is an amazing screen-clearing weapon to boot.
    • Pharaoh Man, mainly due to the Ruby Spears cartoon where he has a badass voice, and shows that he won't put up with Mega Man's shit by decking him in the face after he brags about stealing his powers. However, he's still a cool looking weapon and his boss fight is fun (provided that you're not cheesing it with Flash Stopper).
    • Kalinka Cossack, thanks to her cuteness and eye for fashion.
  • Even Better Sequel: For some fans, 4 is the best of the Classic games and is still held in high regard by those who don't agree. It introduces the Charge Shot which would become a staple in later games, does a better job at fleshing out the game's length with two fortresses than 3's controversial Doc Robots, and in general has great level design, boss design, and weapon balance.
  • Goddamned Boss: Drill Man is constantly burrowing underground, staying out of firing range for several seconds before popping back up... and usually jumping right back down into the dirt. What really makes this annoying is the fact that he turns invincible for a few seconds before digging, which just drags out the fight even further.
    • Dust Man also likes to spam invincibility by constantly using his vacuum attack, which is easy to dodge but makes him unable to be hurt until this long, dragged out attack ends. He's one of the easiest bosses and it doesn't even make him harder, all it does is test the player's patience and draw out the inevitable.
  • Guide Dang It: The Drill Bomb can be detonated prematurely by pressing the fire button a second time. Many players may not know that. Since this is the only reliable way to damage the second part of the Wily Machine (via Splash Damage), they can get stuck there for the longest time, thinking they had to use Rush to get high enough to shoot the weak point.
  • Memetic Loser: Thanks to his pathetically easy Zero Effort Boss fight, Toad Man's got the reputation of being the wimpiest Robot Master of all time. Some fangames and fanfics like the Make a Good Mega Man Level Contest games like to work this into his characterization, where he's self-conscious about being a wimp and goes overboard in trying to prove that he can be a tough guy. And to his credit, some of these appearances actually do make him quite the badass.
  • Most Annoying Sound: Boss health bars fill up so loudly that they drown out the game's excellent boss music, which can certainly be annoying to say the least.
  • Scrappy Weapon: Most weapons are actually well-balanced enough to avoid this trope, but the Skull Barrier could have still used some tuning up. It can do its job well and protects you from projectiles, but once it takes any sort of hit it'll vanish and you'll have to reapply it, an issue shields in most other games don't have. You can't even fire it like literally every other shield, so when you're fighting the charge-happy Dive Man with it, you have constantly put yourself in danger of being bulldozed by the big lug while trying to kill him. Most argue that even though its his weakness, using it makes him harder to fight.
  • That One Boss: Since most bosses deal a ton of collision damage, those whose strategies mostly revolve trying to ram you qualify as this. Dive Man, Bright Man, looking at you!
  • Wily Machine 4 can't even be hit in its second phase unless you get creative with utility usage, or somehow know that you can prematurely detonate Drill Bombs so their splash damage can reach him. While you're struggling to get hits on him, he's constantly getting in your face while firing huge, hard-to-dodge balls of energy at you which is a pain and a half to deal with.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Dr. Cossack's status as a fakeout villain definitely disappointed those who would have liked Mega Man to have had a new non-Wily enemy.
