Mega Man 8 is a Play Station and Sega Saturn video game, released in 1997. It was made to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the series, as well as give the old school formula a new coat of 32-bit paint.
The plot begins when a duo of fighting alien robots crash-land into Dr. Wily's Island base. Mega Man promptly arrives in time to save one of them, while Wily steals a strange source of energy from the wreckage of the other robot. After mowing down four of Wily's latest Robot Masters, Dr. Light finishes repairing the alien robot, named Duo, who soon after escapes, leading Mega Man in chase, only for him to nearly be killed by one of Wily's mecha, although Duo saves him in time. Duo reveals that Wily has been using "Evil Energy", a corrupting source of energy that he acquired from the robot Duo was fighting earlier, and that it must be destroyed lest it all destroy the earth.
All in all, the game was a modest hit in both critical and commercial success, although it didn't get the same attention as the hit Mega Man X4. Regardless, it would be many, many years before a true Classic Mega Man continuation, Mega Man 9, would pop up.
It would later recieve a SNES spinoff called Mega Man and Bass in 1998.
A fan-made 8-bit remake of this game also exists, and can be found online.
Not to be confused with Mega Man 8 Bit Deathmatch.
Tropes:[]
- Affably Evil: Sword Man fits this. Right off the bat, he might say that he's got nothing personal versus Rock, and is simply following what his master told him, say that he won't hold back, and/or that he expects a fair fight. Dodging his Fire Slash attack also makes him commend Rock, saying, "Impressive!," and his defeat line is, "Nice shot!"
- Amusement Park of Doom: Where ClownMan lurks. His stage has dangerous train rides. There are also enemies called Bell Ringers that can cause different sections of the floor to have different effects. Nothing will happen if Rock is standing on a platform that has a circle on it, but if the platform has a cross, a fist will pop out and punch his "balls", sapping away at his health. If the floor has a skull, he will fall through it. If the floor has a question mark, it will open a portal that Rock can enter to get to another location in the room, or perhaps in another room.
- An Ice Person: Frost Man is a robot master who was based on an igloo. He wields the Ice Wave, which can send waves of ice that freezes enemies that users hit with it. Tengu Man is weak to this weapon, since it can freeze his feet.
- Arm Cannon:
- Rock has one grafted into his left arm as usual. He uses it to fire his weapons.
- Forte as well.
- SearchMan has one on his/their right arm.
- GrenadeMan fires his Flash Bombs from this.
- AquaMan has one in his right arm, from which he can shoot water.
- Assist Character: The Rush Jet levels, where powerups can summon Eddie, Beat and (for the first, and so far only, time he's ever went out into battle due to his usual role as a shopkeeper) Auto to your side.
- Be the Ball/Rolling Attack: ClownMan can roll around with his Thunder Carnival attack.
- Beneath the Earth: Where Wily's latest Skull Castle resides.
- Big Damn Heroes: Duo saves Mega Man twice from getting killed by Wily.
- Big "What?": In the third Wily stage, Forte may say this every time he gets hurt. Fitting, considering Forte takes pride in his strength.
- Blade Below the Shoulder:
- Tengu Man has a ha-uchiwa grafted to his left arm.
- Sword Man has a sword grafted to his right arm.
- Bonus Boss: Cut Man and Wood Man both appear as mini-bosses in the Sega Saturn version of the game.
- Boss Banter: The eight Robot Master bosses, Duo, Forte, CutMan, WoodMan, and Doctor Wily have this.
- Boss Rush: Pops up in Skull Castle near its end, as per usual.
- Bubbly Clouds: Tengu Man's stage.
- The Corruption: The "Evil Energy". And it corrupts Mega Man, but he is too pure to be evil and powerful (unlike Bass) and would rather die than let it take him over.
- Calling Your Attacks: The robot masters do so in this one.
- Camp Gay: Aqua Man; but you can call him "Handsome Guy"!!
- Conjoined Twins/Multiple Head Case: SearchMan has two heads upon his shoulders, apparently being conceived after Wily decided that a two-headed sniper robot would be better than one with a single head.
- Continuity Cameo: See Shout-Out below.
- Cowardly Lion: He may be a meek little coward, but AstroMan can be quite tough. His fireballs fall randomly and can be tough to dodge, but Rock can take him down quite easily with the Homing Sniper's missiles.
- Curb Stomp Battle: Mega Man is powerless against Wily's gorilla mecha, but Duo effortlessly mows him down.
- Cutscene Boss: See above.
- Death Cry Echo:
- TenguMan: "It's regretful!"
- AstroMan: "I lost!"
- SwordMan: "Nice shot!"
- ClownMan: "See you in my dreams!" (originally "You will regret this!")
- SearchMan: "Wairi! Banzai!" (This translates as, "Long live Wily!")
- FrostMan: [Groans in pain.]
- GrenadeMan: "That felt good!"
- AquaMan: "That was luck!"
- Death From Above: In battle, AstroMan can summon fireballs in a technique called "Astro Crush." When AstroMan goes down, Rock can do the same. AquaMan is weak to this weapon, probably since the fireballs can break his glass casing.
- Disney Death: Happens to Mega Man at the end, when he gets infected by Evil Energy (much to even the surprise of his own nemesis). Sadly it only lasts for a few seconds before Duo cures him. Us at the wiki wonder what it would be like if Duo hadn't cured him. Perhaps he'd be a Villain Protagonist.
- Down the Drain: In an optional sidepath in the intro stage.
- Demoted to Extra: Bass. Mega Man fights him briefly during the opening cutscene, but he's not seen again until near the end of the game, showing up as a mini-boss of the third Wily level, after which he disappears from the game entirely.
- Early-Bird Cameo: Contrary to popular belief, Duo did not debut in this game, but first popped up in the arcade game Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters.
- Electric Torture: Wily's gorilla mecha uses this to try and kill Mega Man, who screams like he's going Super Saiyan for what seems like a minute, with his open mouth showing and random cutaways to others' faces.
- Elmuh Fudd Syndwome: Dr. Light suffers from this in the english dub.
- Eternal Engine: Grenade Man's stage.
- Evil Is Not a Toy: The Evil Energy possessing Mega Man in the finale wasn't a part of Wily's schemes; in fact, you could argue that he was genuinely surprised when it happened.
- Fanfare: The classic "Boss Selected" music pops up again.
- Fire, Ice, Lightning: Sword Man, Frost Man, Clown Man; respectively.
- Flaming Sword: The Flame Sword, natch.
- Graceful Loser: SwordMan compliments Rock upon his defeat, saying, "Nice shot!" ClownMan, on the other hand...
- Half the Man He Used To Be: Sword Man can split in half during his fight, weaponising this trope.
- Homing Projectile: SearchMan uses plenty during his battle. Rock can also launch these upon defeating SearchMan and thus getting his hands on the Homing Sniper, which AstroMan is weak to.
- Humongous Mecha: Wily's gorilla mecha midway through the game.
- I'm a Humanitarian: FrostMan has a chance to threaten to turn Rock into kakigori and eat him at the start of his boss battle.
Break into pieces! I'll turn you into kakigori and eat you! |
- ...although there's a chance for him to merely say this:
Crush! I! You! Defeat! |
- Jerkass Has a Point: Bass insults Mega Man by telling him he's naïve. He is right.
- Jungle Japes: Search Man's stage.
- Lava Pit: Plenty pop up in SwordMan's stage. The aforementioned Gorilla Mecha that had creamed Rock also falls into one after his tango with Duo.
- Lethal Lava Land: SwordMan makes his lair in the depths of a temple that contains lava.
- Mad Bomber: Grenade Man, full stop. He cackles like a loon throughout the fight, he blows up the floor at one point, and he actually seems to enjoy being hit by his own bombs!
- Making a Splash: AquaMan uses water for his attacks. One has to wonder why he does not take increased damage from Thunder Claws...
- Milestone Celebration
- Mission Pack Sequel
- Name's the Same: Aqua Man. Not to be confused with this Aquaman.
- Oddball in the Series: For many gameplay reasons, and for being the only core original-series game not to debut on a Nintendo system.
- Playing with Fire: SwordMan can use fire, and his weapon is the Flame Sword. Appropriately, he is weak to AquaMan's Water Balloons, since water can put out fire.
- Press X to Not Die: The "Jump, Jump, Slide Slide!" segments of Frost Man's stage, and later Skull Castle 1.
- Red Boxing Gloves: The floors that are marked with crosses can have these appear from their tops if Rock stands on top of one when the Bell Ringers ring their bells.
- Shock and Awe: ClownMan uses Thunder Claws for his main weapon. Rock can get his hands on these following ClownMan's defeat, and can use them to swing on pegs. One has to wonder why AquaMan does not take critical damage from THIS...
- Shout-Out: The rotting remains of the Dragon Boss from Mega Man 2 can be spotted in the intro stage.
- The intro movie is one huge Shout-Out to all of the previous games in the series, with numerous robot masters and fortress bosses from 1-7 making an appearence.
- Upon defeat, ClownMan says, "See you in my dreams!," with his death line being akin to a line that Pennywise says upon his defeat in the 1990 film adaptation of Stephen King's IT. (Originally, it was supposed to be something like "You will regret this!" or "I'll remember this!")
- Sore Loser: Upon defeat in the Japanese version, ClownMan said, "You will regret this!" SwordMan is an inversion.
- Sword Plant: SwordMan has a chance to plant his sword into the ground during battle.
- Temple of Doom: Sword Man's stage, combined with Lethal Lava Land.
- Underestimating Badassery: At the start of his battle, Tengu Man has a chance to make fun of Rock for being "just a kid."
- Unexpected Shmup Level: The Rush Jet sections, in Tengu Man's level as well as the second Fortress level.
- Walk, Don't Swim: The only (official) game that averts this by having Mega Man actually swim.
- Water Guns and Balloons: AquaMan uses Water Balloons for his main weapon and can also shoot water in controllable jets. Rock gets his hands on the former when AquaMan goes down.
