Despite the fact that the plots of the games usually appear barebone, Metal Slug has its fair share of characters, all of whom have a great deal of backstory to them. The backstory to each character is where the real plot points stand out.
Protagonists (Broken down by game appearance)[]
Metal Slug[]
Marco (Marchrius Dennis Rossi)[]
Marco joined the military's vocational school following technical high school, and after graduating, joined the Peregrine Falcons Squadron, soon becoming its leader. Though generally a good-natured guy, he tends to flip his shit whenever Morden is mentioned, given the fact that Morden was responsible for the deaths of many of his good friends.
Off the battlefield, Marco is an expert computer technician, often creating computer viruses for fun, but one in particular that unintentionally made its way onto the net infected the military's mainframe, made it past all of the firewalls and almost caused the launch of several nuclear missiles. He intends to take that secret to his grave.
From Metal Slug 6 onward, Marco's unique ability is to deal double damage with his handgun. If playing on Easy, though, this ability transfers over to the automatic Heavy Machine Gun. In Metal Slug 7/XX, he can also use the Burst Shot, which allows for rapid fire, though he can't move.
Marco Rossi's Tropes:[]
- The Ace
- Berserk Button : Anything involving General Morden.
- Handguns : His attack power is doubled while firing a handgun.
- Nice Guy
- Overprotective Dad: After accidentally creating MS-Alice, he placed a programming lock on her so she wouldn't learn any adult terms.
- Playful Hacker : During his spare time.
- Vitriolic Best Buds : With Tarma
- Weapon of Choice: The Heavy Machine Gun.
Tarma (Tarmacle Roving the Third)[]
Son of a military man, he entered the Special Forces Training School after finishing junior high. At age 20, he joined the Peregrine Falcons on a mission to rescue the president, at which point he met Marco, the two becoming fast friends. When he found out Marco had been selected to take part in the counteroffensive against Morden, Tarma was quick to volunteer. Though he often pokes fun at Marco, he holds his friend in the highest regard.
Whenever he's not engaged in battle, he builds custom motorcycles with such attention to detail that he puts most professionals to shame. If and when he can retire from active service, he intends to open his own motorbike shop.
Tarma's engineering skill from Metal Slug 6 onward allows him to make better use of the Slugs that he comes across. They can take twice as many hits, he can use the vulcan fix, the vulcan's damage is increased, and he obtains twice as many Slug Shells on pickup. In 7/XX, he can also kick Slugs, which can either recover or damage them. However, the double durability and recovery/damage kick only works on Vehicle Slugs.
Tarma Roving Tropes:[]
- Ace Pilot: His special ability is to improve any Slug vehicle that he enters, giving it greater firepower, armor and control.
- Cool Shades: Rather iconic for his character.
- Everything's Better with Motorcycles: His hobby in his spare time. His intro in Metal Slug Code J features him writing in on a motorcycle.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Marco.
- Weapon of Choice: The Shotgun.
Metal Slug 2[]
Eri Kasamoto[]
Eri was found abandoned on the steps of a church. When she became wise to the ways of the world, she eventually ran off and became the leader of a gang of street kids. The Intelligence Department of the Regular Army noticed her leadership skills, and thus recruited her. She went on to receive spy training, and took part in a number of missions requiring assassination. She found these types of missions distasteful, and requested a transfer to the SPARROWS division. Given her impressive track record, it was approved. Once transferred to the SPARROWS division, she was assigned the role of team demolitions expert.
Given Eri's background of growing up among street children, her demeanor and attitude in life mostly boils down to "Rely on nobody but yourself."
Eri's unique talent from Slug 6 onward is handling grenades. She starts each life with 20, gains double grenades on pickup, deals more damage with them, and is the only one able to aim her throws, which includes straight upward.
Eri Kasimoto Tropes:[]
- Action Girl
- Bare Your Midriff: Sort of a trend for the female soldiers in the Regular Army.
- Dark and Troubled Past
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Eri's the Tomboy.
- Stuff Blowing Up: Her special ability is to be able to throw grenades further and more accurately than any other character. She also starts each mission with more grenades.
- Weapon of Choice: The Laser Gun.
Fiolina "Fio" Germi[]
Daughter of the massively wealthy Germi Family, hailing from Italy. The Germi family has historically been a military family, sending their oldest into service, so naturally her father wished for a healthy son to carry on the name. However, following Fio's difficult childbirth, her mother was unable to bear anymore children, making it the first time the Germi heir was female.
Eri's polar opposite, Fio was raised in a loving family, and has a cheerful and upbeat demeanor. Aside from her soldier training, she also studied chiropractics, acupuncture and moxibustion in university, and hopes to become a sports doctor in the future.
Fio's special trait from the sixth game onward is carrying extra ammo for her weapons. She starts each life with a Heavy Machine Gun, and gains 50% more ammo on weapon pickup. If playing on Easy, though, she automatically gets the Big Heavy Machine Gun as her initial armament.
Fio Germi Tropes:[]
- Action Girl
- Badass Adorable
- Bare Your Midriff
- Guest Fighter: She is playable in The King of Fighters: Maximum Impact 2.
- Meganekko
- Moe
- More Dakka : Her Specialty from Metal Slug 6 onwards.
- The Ojou
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Fio's the Girly Girl.
- Weapon of Choice: The Rocket Launcher.
Metal Slug 4[]
Nadia Cassel[]
Initially, Nadia wanted to go into the modeling business, but she couldn't stop eating, which meant she kept gaining weight, so she enlisted into the Regular Army for the exercise. Here, she discovered her skills as a soldier, and was chosen to help in stopping the Amadeus Syndicate from releasing its supervirus. Here, Nadia was a stand-in for Eri, who had been assigned to other duties. The one thing putting her apart from Eri is that her alternate melee weapon is a souped-up taser, capable of shredding the enemy. Unfortunately, due to some in-game bugs, she doesn't get as many points for using her melee.
Nadia Cassel Tropes:[]
- Action Girl
- Bare Your Midriff
- Big Eater : The reason she joined the military is to lose weight.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute : To Eri
- Stun Guns: She uses a taser as her melee attack.
Trevor Spacey[]
Trevor received his first computer at age three. By the time he was seven, not only could he perform complex coding, he also worked on creating antivirus progams during summer break, many of which are still in use at the school he attended. When he ended up joining the Peregrine Falcons, he found a great deal of respect for Marco, whose own computer skills surpassed his own. Here, he acted as Tarma's stand-in. His melee involves kicking the enemy so hard, it shreds them apart; he gains double points for this, but he has to hold still.
Trevor Spacey Tropes:[]
- Armed Legs: His boots have concealed knives in them, which he uses as his melee attack.
- Asian and Nerdy
- Playful Hacker: Allows him to get on really well with Marco.
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute : To Tarma.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy
Metal Slug Advance[]
Walter Ryan[]
Walter joined the Peregrine Falcons squad with the hopes to train his mind and body, knowing he had the stamina to keep up with the rest of them. However, he never would've guessed his initial "training" would turn out to be a rescue mission.
Tyra Elson[]
Tyra's strong desire to fight evil is what motivated her to join the Peregrine Falcons alongside Walter. After getting the highest score on the written test, she was immediately put to the physical training course on the island where the game takes place.
Crossover Appearances[]
Ralf and Clark, the Ikari Warriors, inbetween their appearances in The King of Fighters series, appeared alongside the core team for Metal Slug 6, and are back for Metal Slug 7/XX. Joining them in XX is Leona. A better amount of information about these three can be found on their respective series' page.
Ralf Jones[]
Aside from his participation in various fighting tournaments, little to nothing else is known about him or Clark. There's rumors flying around, but he tends to ignore them.
Though carrying half as much ammo and grenades as anyone else, Ralf makes up for this with his Vulcan Punch, capable of destroying tanks, and his melee speed is much faster than anyone else's (and his normal melee can also damage things that others cannot). He's also the only character capable of taking two hits. He's just that tough.
Ralf Jones Tropes:[]
- Hot-Blooded: One of the more hot-headed members of the Regular Army and the Ikari Warriors team.
- Made of Iron: Unlike the other characters, Ralf is able to take two hits.
- Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs: His signature move, the Vulcan Punch, has him unleash a flurry of burning punches that can destroy a tank.
- Weapon of Choice: The Flame Shot, which suits his hot-headed personality. Also his primary weapon in his One Man Army Ralf version in Metal Slug Attack.
Clark Still[]
Clark and Ralf have been longtime friends, even in the unit the two of them are assigned to.
Clark's unique ability is his Super Argentine Backbreaker, a special melee move capable of earning him a lot of points in a short time frame. He also gains a small window of invulnerability with each enemy he tosses with this. However, it only works on certain human-sized enemies.
Clark Still Tropes:[]
- Cool Shades: Somewhat similar to Tarma.
- Difficult but Awesome: His Super Argentine Backbreaker has a very short range, but if you master it, it makes him nearly invulnerable when fighting human enemies, and nets the player tons of points.
- Hammerspace: In Metal Slug Attack, his special move has him pull out huge explosive barrels out of nowhere and hurl them at the enemy. His Jet Clark version has him throw refrigerators instead (presumably because of how cool he is).
- The Stoic: A stark contrast to his friend Ralf.
- Weapon of Choice: The Iron Lizard.
Leona Heidern[]
Leona was adopted by Commander Heidern following her involuntary transformation and slaughter of her hometown, and Clark and Ralf helped to oversee her training.
Leona joins the team for XX, but has to be unlocked via DLC (she's only 99 cents, well worth it). She carries an almagation of everyone else's skills (Stronger pistol fire, 20% more ammo and grenades, Slugs can take an extra hit, and she retains her weapons after losing a life. Interestingly, her special melee, Moon Slasher, can destroy bullets). According to her profile, Clark, Fio and Leona finished a mission that also further bonded the three as being good friends.
Leona Heidern's tropes:[]
- Badass Abnormal
- Razor Wind: Her unique move, the Moon Slasher, generates a wave of cutting wind that can kill enemies and nullify enemy attacks.
Yuri Sakazaki[]
Yuri is Ryo's adopted sister from Art of Fighting, who is a usable unit in Metal Slug Defense. She runs very quickly, though she has low health.
She has no ranged attack, and her standard attack is to perform two uppercuts when in close range to an enemy. Her special attack causes her to jump high in the air and fire off an energy ball.
Yuri's tropes:[]
- Clothing Damage: When killed, Yuri's top will be ripped off as her body falls backward, exposing her pink bra.
- Fragile Speedster: Yuri runs quickly but has low health, which often causes her to be killed easily due to her lack of a ranged attack.
- Genki Girl: Her unit description is to "say yo-oh in cheerful tone!".
- Ki Attacks: She throws an energy ball.
Antagonists (By game appearance)[]
Metal Slug[]
Donald Morden[]
Morden was formerly a Vice Admiral in the Regular Army Marine Corps. Though a tough and efficient commander, he was also something of A Father to His Men, which greatly earned him their respect.
Things went well for Morden, up until the Central Park bombing, which not only took away his right eye (hence the eyepatch he wears), but it also killed his young son. To twist the knife even further, he later found out that Regular Army Intelligence knew about the bomb threat and pushed for the high command to stop it, but due to rampant corruption in the system at the time, the higher-ups dismissed the threat as being a mere prank or so (later blaming the bombing on a lack of intel), which, when combined with his emotional instability and rampant alcoholism following afterwards, ended in Morden's resignation.
When Morden left, all of the soldiers under his command (including Allen O'Neal) followed him out of sheer loyalty to him. This allowed him to form the Rebellion Army, and he began making swift tactical moves against the Regular Army, nearly destroying them and finally motivating them to get their act together. In fact, during his attack on the president, he gained his nickname as the "Devil Rebirth", due to just how frightening he was.
Though he was a main threat in Metal Slug, in Metal Slug 2 it turns out he teamed up with the Mars People, who gave him the technology he needed, but were quick to turn on him. He barely showed up in games 3 (where a Mars Person was impersonating him) and 4 (there were robotic duplicates of him, possibly including the one in the intro demo), and was completely absent in 5, but made a return in 6, where he, again, made a pact with the Mars People, but this time, due to the Venusians invading, it was soon under different terms. Taking a certain route in Stage 4 will mean that he's the one who actually saves the player at the end of the game.
His biggest return to the spotlight was in 7/XX, where it turns out his own soldiers, from some unspecified time in the future, went back in time to help him out, again out of sheer loyalty to him.
Morden's Tropes[]
- Butt Monkey
- Eyepatch of Power
- Made of Plasticine : Applies to his troops
Allen O'Neal[]
Morden's right hand man and bodyguard. When Morden resigned from the Regular Army, Allen, alongside all of Morden's supporters, followed him out. He's most remembered for taking insane amounts of punishment and supposedly being killed each game (he's eaten by an Orca in Metal Slug 2), only to return later. In Metal Slug 3, he not only died, but came back in the same level. Aside from being nigh unkillable, he also has a wife and son to return home to at the end of the day.
He appeared in Metal Slug 4's second and final stages, whereupon fighting him at the latter reveals him to be a machine, possibly meaning you also fought a robot Allen back in Stage 2. He comes back for Metal Slug 7/XX in a Rebel Gigant, still spouting his trademark quips and insults.
Allen O'Neal tropes:[]
- Annoying Laugh / Evil Laugh: When he's not taunting the player, he usually can be heard going "AHAHAHAHAHA! AHAHAHAHAHA!"
- Boss Banter:
- "C'MON, BOY!"
- "YOU'RE MINCEMEAT!"
- Engrish: "GO HOME TO MOMMY!"
- Implacable Man
- Large Ham
- See You in Hell: His death cry, though "death" is debatable as he always seems to come back to life somehow.
- Shows Damage: His skin turns red as he takes more damage.
Metal Slug 2[]
Mars People[]
Aliens from Mars, if that wasn't obvious enough (though they do resemble squids, according to some). Possessing spaceships straight out of a 50's B-movie, they allied themselves with Morden, but were really using him to weaken Earth's defenses so they could take over with little to no opposition. Though defeated at the end of 2/X, they kidnapped Morden before the events of 3, sending a Mars Person to impersonate him, and eventually capturing one of the player's characters and creating clones of him/her.
At the onset of Metal Slug 6, it appears as though they've allied with Morden again, but this time it was to find their leader, Rootmars. Unfortunately, the Venusians showed up before Rootmars could be fully extracted, and they spent the rest of the game imprisoned at the Venusians' lair, if they weren't outright killed or eaten.
Taking a certain route in Stage 5 of 7/XX will show that the Mars People are back, and at the end of the game, just as Morden's about to be taken into custody, the Mars People swoop down and take him to safety.
Mars People Tropes:[]
- Everything Squishier With Cephalopods
Metal Slug 3[]
Rootmars[]
The leader of the Mars People, he was the one who orchestrated the events of 2/X and 3. Though originally looking like a larger Mars Person (just wearing a see-through helmet), his real form was revealed after his spaceship was destroyed (and he looked an awful lot like E.T.) He was defeated at the end of 3, his brain being blown out, and sank into the ocean, presumedly dead...
..But he wasn't. At the beginning of Metal Slug 6, Morden and the Mars People were looking for his body, and just as they located it, the Venusians came in. It turns out that while he was on the ocean floor, Rootmars had apparently recovered from his freefall beating at the hands of the team, and learned his lesson as well. During Stage 4, if you take the alternate route, Rootmars will swoop down and grab your player, taking him or her to the next destination whilst also being outfitted with two gatling guns, helping take down the Venusians. Taking this route also means Rootmars saves you at the end of the game.
Rootmars' tropes:[]
- Large and In Charge: The normal Mars People are human-sized, he takes up most of the screen you fight him on.
- Psychic Powers: Is able to conjure massive energy balls and hurl them (albeit very slowly) as an attack.
- Super Intelligence
Metal Slug 4[]
Amadeus Syndicate[]
A mysterious organization whose threat to the world was the release of the "White Baby Virus", a supervirus powerful enough to penetrate any mainframe's defenses. It also appeared as though Morden was supporting their efforts, though they had made a robotics plant at their base, creating several Morden bots, possibly including the one seen in the opening sequence.
The main man himself supposedly died at the end of the game when his base was destroyed, making him the first antagonist in the series to die for good. However, the credits sequence showed an intact computer broadcasting something.....
Metal Slug 5[]
Ptolemaic Army[]
This army group attacked a Regular Army base and ended up stealing a disc containing blueprint data on both Metal Slugs and Rebellion Tech, which lead to them creating their own bastardized and upgraded versions. Due to the confusing nature of the game (and the fact that so much went unused), it was hard to tell who was really in charge. It appeared as though they had gained the trust of the natives by the Corridor of Fire, and was using them to keep intruders away.
Metal Slug 6[]
Venusians[]
Obviously, aliens from Venus. The Mars People's nemesis, they not only appear to be physically stronger and more diverse than the Mars People, they also seemed to have better technology on their side as well. They formed the second half of Metal Slug 6's plot, especially after their first appearance was snatching up two martians and eating them.
Their queen came to Earth via an asteroid, and was quick to set up an underground shelter for her brood. After one hell of a fight against the team, she fell to her death, releasing an explosion that apparently killed the protagonists as well. Depending on which route you took in Stage 4, either Morden or Rootmars will save the player.
Venusians Tropes:[]
Metal Slug 7/ XX[]
Future Soldiers[]
Morden's own troops from an unspecified time in the future. Presumedly at some time after Morden was captured or killed, his own forces, again out of loyalty, gathered up their technology and, though the construction of what appeared to be a time window or portal, went back in time to help Morden out. Despite having new weapons and upgraded machinery, they still got their asses handed to them, and with their window destroyed, they were unable to do anything else.
Metal Slug Advance[]
Allen Junior[]
That's right, Allen's own son is here. He posed as a training instructor, which allowed him access to the island where the Peregrine Falcon trainees were undergoing the test. From here, he was able to lead some of Morden's forces to launch a surprise attack on the trainees, capturing the most of them and allowing Morden's troops to set up a base.
Unlike his father, though, Junior tends to act more strategically in direct confrontation against the player. However, once injured past a certain point, he eventually loses his temper and starts acting more like his father in battle. However, finding and defeating him is easier said than done.
Metal Slug 3D[]
Oguma[]
Pronounced Ogma, he is the head of the ridiculously massive company named after himself, Oguma was apparently funding Morden's efforts, but was actually using him to help find a recording device deep underground, the Alator. It turns out that Oguma was one of few survivors of a long-extinct race, the Tuaha de Dunan, who were shown to be technically advanced.
His culture was said to self-destruct at the peak of their evolution; to combat this, they placed a recording device on a planet, then hibernated for 300 million years. If the information gathered by the device clashes with them, they simply erase the world's history and start over, which has possibly caused some time-space problems.
Near the end of the game, after betraying Morden, he used the Alator to release the Lugas, which then absorbs the information from Alator and begins its mission to erase history, prompting the crew to stop it. When Lugas was absorbed by a previous experiment, the Luu (and beaten by the crew afterwards), it goes crazy as Oguma and his followers stay behind in an attempt to further stop it, despite Marco's protests.
At the game's end, as Rumi is about to head out, Oguma shows up out of nowhere and hands her his information disc before leaving, hoping the people would learn from his prior mistakes.
Oguma Tropes:[]
Support Characters and other notable NPC's[]
Rumi Aikawa[]
Rumi originally joined the Regular Army to make use of their medicinal facilities to help her ailing mother, who had a weak heart, and her twin sister Madoka, who was physically ill. Due to a paperwork SNAFU, she was shipped to the front lines, and despite having never completed her training, she made it back unscathed, a miracle in and of itself.
She was offered the chance to leave and live life as a civilian, but she declined the offer, and was soon transferred to the Supply Division. Before each mission, she fills her backpack with various supplies, and treks out to deliver the goods to Regular Army Soldiers... but there's one problem. She's horrible with directions, and is likely to wander off and be found in a completely different location, earning her the nickname "The Wandering Ghost" by most soldiers. She later found out her sister Madoka also joined to become more physically fit, and was also placed in the Supply Division..... and shares the same atrocious sense of direction her sister has.
Though mostly a background character in the main games, she was given a bigger role in Metal Slug 3D, giving information to Marco and even allowing access to a Garage where the player could customize their own Metal Slug vehicle.
Hyakutaro Ichimonji[]
A Second Lieutenant of the Regular Army, he's a living legend among the soldiers. Pretending to be a captured POW, once he's "rescued" by the player, he helps out by firing homing Hadokens at the enemies and spin-kicking anyone else who gets too close. He will flee if you die, though.
Hyakutaro Ichimonji tropes:[]
- Ki Attacks: After you "rescue" him, he is able to help you attack enemies by firing off energy balls hadouken-style.
Utan[]
An orangutan who follows you around after you find him, attacking enemies with an Uzi submachine gun.
Utan Tropes:[]
- Badass Normal : to Main Characters
- Everything Better With Monkeys
Metal Slug Defense / Attack[]
Characters introduced in the mobile game Metal Slug Defense and Metal Slug Attack, broken down by their factions.
Regular Army[]
MS-Alice[]
A female AI created accidentally by Marco. Alice is able to project a mass hologram of herself, and inhabits and controls an SV-001 Metal Slug tank.
Alice tropes:
- Become a Real Girl: Desires to gain a real body in order to interact with her creator Marco on a physical level.
- Defeat Means Friendship: In the Extra Ops "Cyberbrain Fiend", Alice engages the enemy AI White Baby in combat, and is killed by her. White Baby then takes Alice's lifeless body into her own cyberspace, reviving her and revealing that the attack was her attempt to befriend Alice. The two then quickly become friends, though Alice has doubts about trusting White Baby.
- Marilyn Maneuver: Her special attack has her jump into the air along with her slug, firing off a barrage of shells. As she descends, she holds her skirt down to keep it from flying up.
- Taking You With Me: When defeated, she makes a tearful salute before sending her damaged Slug tank charging at the enemy in a kamikaze-style attack. Averted if she is defeated with a critical hit, as she is killed and her body falls down and sprawls on top of her tank, which explodes on the spot a second later.
- Undying Loyalty: Is deeply devoted to her creator Marco.
Midori[]
A young girl who is the engineer of the Regular Army. She designed and controls several humanoid Tetsujin-kun Slugs, which she uses in battle.
Midori tropes:
- Death from Above: Most of her special attacks involve her calling down her Tetsujin-kun slugs down from the sky to rain attacks on the enemy.
- Child Soldiers: Marco and Eri are rather uncomfortable about having Midori on the battlefield due to her young age, but still concede that she's indeed capable and useful.
- Rose-Haired Girl: Handles herself on the battlefield in a rather cheerful, non-serious manner. She even wears headphones to listen to music while she's in battle, and many of her weapons are designed to look like toys.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Midori isn't killed when her health is depleted; instead, one of her Tetsujin-kun Slugs shows up to carry her away to safety. In her Giant Copter version, the cockpit detaches as a Slug Copter, and she flies away.
- Waking Up Elsewhere: In Extra Ops "Try Line 20th", Midori engages Unsigned in combat and is quickly defeated. Instead of killing her, Unsigned renders her unconscious and warps her back to her base, where she wakes up and learns that she was in a coma for five days.
Rita[]
A female soldier from the countryside who joined the Regular Army. Fights at close range with kicks.
Rita tropes:
- Berserk Button: Happens when her background as a country girl is brought up, as Roberto Nicola found out the hard way.
- Clothing Damage: When killed, Rita's top and shorts are torn, exposing her breasts and red panties as she falls to the ground.
- Cute Bruiser: Despite being a fairly strong combatant, she's somewhat into girly, cute fashion, and has a tendency to do somewhat silly things.
- Dodge the Bullet: Has a skill that allows her to dodge some incoming ranged attacks to allow her to close in on the enemy.
- Instant Armor: Her leg armor developed by Midori is able to instantly warp onto and off her legs when she is using her special attacks.
- Kick Chick: While useless at handling firearms, Rita's primary attacks are all kicks. Midori developed special leg armor for her that can be warped on and off her legs to enhance the power of her kicks.
Amber[]
A female mercenary who joined the Regular Army. She drives a modified Slug Gunner.
Amber tropes:
- Absolute Cleavage: The zipper of her bodysuit ends just below her breasts.
- Regenerating Health: Her Slug Gunner has a self-repair unit which regenerates some of its health every few seconds. At higher levels, the health regeneration is so high that it is almost indestructible.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When defeated, her Slug Gunner flashes orange, and Amber jumps out and runs away before it explodes. Averted when she is defeated with a critical hit, as Amber is knocked unconscious and does not escape the vehicle, dying when it explodes.
Perche[]
A female soldier in the Regular Army, and the user of a prototype suit of power armor developed under the Regular Army's secret weapons system program, the Metal Device Project.
Perche tropes:
- Almighty Janitor: Although she signed up in the army to be a hero, she started off just doing training and cleaning. She then uses her power suit to clean more quickly, impressing onlookers.
- BFG: Her primary weapon is a huge Gattling gun powered by her armor suit. Switching between versions allows her to fire either explosive or piercing bullets.
- Clothing Damage: When killed, Perche's armor shatters and falls off her body. If she died from a critical hit, her tank top underneath will also be ripped, exposing her breasts.
- For Great Justice: Was chosen to be a pilot in the Metal Device project because of her great passion for justice and heroism.
Nikita[]
A female tank commander in the Regular Army. Controls and upgraded Di-Cokka tank with a powerful force cannon.
Nikita tropes:
- The Enemy Weapons Are Better: The tank she rides in, a Di-Cokka, is typically used by the enemy Rebel faction. Nevertheless, it has been upgraded and fitted with a much stronger cannon and better armor.
- Just a Kid: Nikita has a small stature, which sometimes makes people around her treat her like a kid. As this annoys her, she carries around a baton to apparently assert her leadership.
- Law of Inverse Recoil: Perhaps to highlight her small size, Nikita is thrown back and forth in her tank whenever her tank's cannon fires.
- Panty Shot: In her victory animation, Nikita somersaults out of her tank, and her skirt flaps up briefly to expose her white panties. Also seen when she is killed with a critical hit, as her body falls out of her tank and lands on the ground with her legs apart.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When defeated, her tank flashes orange, and she panics and calls in a helicopter to save her before her tank explodes. However, if she is defeated with a critical hit, she is killed and her body slumps over the side of her tank before falling off and landing on the ground.
- Wave Motion Gun: Her tank's special attack is called a Solenoid Cannon, which fires an orange beam that does no damage at first, but is followed up by an incredibly powerful shockwave.
Ami[]
A female soldier who is the second volunteer of the Metal Device Project after Perche. She uses lightning-based weapons.
Ami tropes:
- Bash Brothers: Is close to Perche, who she bonded with due to the latter's optimistic personality. Interactions between the two suggest that Ami is in fact romantically interested in Perche, though it is not known if this is reciprocated.
- Shock and Awe: Her weapons are all lightning-based, firing electrical beams which can pierce through enemies. Her special attack is a large bolt of red lightning which arcs around the screen. These work against her when she is defeated, however, as her equipment malfunctions, electrocuting and killing her.
- Shy Blue-haired Girl: She is stated to lack self-confidence, and is therefore quiet and shy around others. Being around Perche, however, makes her feel more at ease.
Molly[]
A female researcher in the Regular Army, who is also a member of the Metal Device Project. Pilots a mech known as the Slug Defender.
Molly tropes:
- Genius Slob: Is apparently a very good mechanic and researcher, but neglects personal hygiene as her room is messy with leftover food cartons all over the place.
- Panty Shot: When defeated, Molly's mech explodes, killing her and hurling her body to the ground, and her pants loosen and fall down her hips, exposing her white panties.
- The Rival: Proclaims herself as Amber's rival, and joined the Regular Army's Metal Device Project in order to compete with her. Interestingly, she later teams up with Amber to jointly pilot the Slug Unison in their Pile Bunker version.
- Shock and Awe: Her Slug Defender uses primarily lightning-based attacks, generating short-ranged electrical shocks and shields which can stun opponents. Her special version's mech is able to fire a barrage of electrically-powered orbs which can stun multiple enemies.
Reika[]
A female soldier in the Regular Army, who is also a member of the famous Bradford family. Fights with a variety of weapons hidden inside her clothes.
Reika tropes:
- Clothing Damage: When Reika's health is depleted, her clothes will be torn, exposing her white bra and the side of her panties.
- Panty Shot: When Reika performs the second stage of her normal attack, she does a backflip and tosses out a bomb, and her skirt flips up to expose her white panties.
- Parasol of Prettiness: Carries a red umbrella with her, which is actually a damage shield which makes her briefly invulnerable. Her counter attack also reveals a shotgun hidden in the umbrella, which does extremely high close-range damage.
- The Rival: Considers Fio her rival, as both girls are from rich, prestigious families.
- Taking You With Me: After losing all her health, Reika draws a sword and a lighted stick of dynamite and charges at the nearest enemy. When reaching them, the dynamite explodes, killing Reika and dealing a moderate amount of damage.
- Trench Coat Warfare: Carries multiple weapons hidden underneath her clothes, including a minigun, bombs, a rocket launcher, and her umbrella shotgun.
Louise[]
A female scout in the Regular Army, who wields a sniper rifle and a radio communicator in battle, using the latter to call in air strikes.
Louise tropes:

Growl tropes:
- Attack Animal: Growl's tiger is trained in combat, and carries bombs and missile launchers into battle.
- Power-Up Food: Growl's special attack involves him taking out a small piece of food and tossing it to his tiger, who instantly powers up and runs back and forth along the battlefield, dropping a trail of powerful bombs as it does so and making Growl evade all enemy attacks for the duration.
- Raised by Wolves: Grew up in the wild among tigers, and is more comfortable communicating with animals. Although he could only say "growl" when the other soldiers first met him, he gradually learned to speak human language.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When defeated, Growl doesn't die, instead escaping on his tiger and tossing out a series of bombs as he does so.

Ashley tropes:
- Ace Pilot: Her entire character is built around this, and her Slug Flyer is customized to maximize her flying abilities.
- Frickin' Laser Beams: The wingtips of her Slug Flyer are equipped with laser cannons, which can fire converging beams to form a larger, more powerful laser beam, which she sweeps across enemies when using her special attack.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When defeated, her Slug Flyer crashes, and she jumps out at the last moment and floats away on a parachute. Averted if she is defeated with a critical hit, however, as she is somehow unable to escape and dies when her plane crashes and explodes.
Maggie[]
A female member of the Regular Army who enlisted as an engineer and a participant in the Metal Device Project. She is familiar with Molly and Amber, and pilots the Slug Rising mech in battle.
Maggie tropes:
- Camp Cook: Though not exactly a cook, Maggie tends to take on this role as she is seen cooking for the others several times, once offering vegetable curry to Claudia and Ashley.
- Oh Crap: When defeated, Maggie will start screaming in panic before her mech explodes, killing her and hurling her body through the air.
- Shock and Awe: Her mech is able to fire electrically-charged bullets capable of stunning enemies.

- Dual-Wielding: Wields dual pistols in battle that fire thunder energy bullets.
- Gorgeous George: Spends his free time grooming himself and always checks his appearance in the mirror before going into battle.
Ulala[]
A young girl who became a member of the Regular Army's Metal Device Project alongside Perche and Ami.

- Clothing Damage: When Ulala is killed, her armor shatters and falls off, exposing her tank top as her body collapses. If she was defeated with a critical hit, her tank top will be ripped, and she dies with her breasts exposed.
- Frickin' Laser Beams: In her special incarnation, Ulala's summoned weapon fires off several laser beams instead of missiles.
- Macross Missile Massacre: In her normal form, Ulala fires missiles from a small handheld rocket launcher as her standard attack. However, when her special ability is used, she calls down a massive box-shaped weapon which can fire off a barrage of far larger, more powerful missiles.

If upgraded, Kanae will shout a second time after the first burst, now covering a far larger area and lasting a longer duration.
- No Sell: When fighting against the Professor, he quickly realizes that Kanae is immune to the Psionic Brain's mind control abilities, apparently as she's far too focused on her patrol duties.
- Panty Shot: When killed, Kanae's patrol slug explodes, killing her and hurling her dead body to the ground, where she lands with her legs apart and her pink panties visible.
- Transforming Vehicle: Her Patrol Slug is able to transition between a wheeled form when she is not engaged in combat, into a bipedal mech when she attacks.
Karen[]
A female graduate from the military academy. Pilots the Slug Sniper, which is apparently a very unwieldy machine requiring precise control.
Karen tropes:

- Expy: Somewhat one of Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion, down to her Slug Sniper mech being the same color scheme as Asuka's.
- Kill It With Fire: Surprisingly un-subtle for what's supposed to be a sniper rifle, her mech's weapon fires rounds which explode into massive fireballs, dealing lots of area-of-effect damage to enemy targets.

- Panty Shot: When killed, Abigail's body falls onto her side with her buttocks facing the screen, exposing her blue panties.

Beatriz tropes:
- Big Sister Worship: To her older sister, Abigail. Makes her extremely jealous of Trevor, whom she sees as an obstacle to getting attention from Abigail.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Despite her pretty and cute appearance, Beatriz is extremely haughty to everyone apart from Abigail, and treats her soldiers extremely poorly.
- Break the Haughty: Her arrogance and tendency to treat her soldiers as disposable usually causes her to make very poor tactical decisions, often resulting in her being killed in most Extra Ops, forcing her squad to retreat.
- Bullying a Dragon: In Extra Ops "United Front the 18th", Beatriz forces her soldiers to attack Geweih Metzelei despite her teammates' warnings. She later gets her just desserts as Geweih strikes her directly with a fireball and kills her, later standing over her dead body and expressing anger at her treatment of her soldiers.
- Kill it with Ice: Most of Beatriz's weapons involve freezing rays or beams. When defeating enemies, her freeze attacks also leave behind obstacles in the form of snowmen or large ice cubes, which enemies have to destroy in order to progress.
- Panty Shot: When Beatriz is killed, her body falls onto her back and sprawls, and she dies with her legs spread apart wide, her panty-clad crotch facing the screen. She wears black panties in her normal version, grey in her special version, and blue in her Halloween version.

- Shell-Shocked Veteran: Is emotionless and robotic, even though her head is organic, presumably because she is traumatized by the deaths of her friends.

Izabella[]
A female officer who is in charge of the Rebel Army's prisons.
Izabella tropes:
- The Baroness: Has the character archetype of the dominatrix, complete with the color scheme and the whip.
- Panty Shot: Seen when she is killed, as her body falls on the ground with her legs propped up, causing her short skirt to hike up and expose her purple panties.

- Whip It Good: Wields a whip as a weapon, which is somehow capable of sprouting spikes.
Rapid[]
A female supply officer who is well-respected in the Rebel army. Is responsible for ensuring that the Rebel Army's supply trains arrive on time.
Rapid tropes:

Dion tropes:
- Blade Spam: Dion attacks with a flurry of blade slashes and stabs, which do very high damage up close.
- Dodge the Bullet: Has a special skill which allows him a very high chance to dodge incoming attacks, which helps him get up close to enemies where he can deal the most damage. His special attack also makes him dodge all incoming attacks for its duration.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When defeated, he somehow receives a distress call from base and runs off, yelling into a walkie-talkie instead of falling in battle.
- Shock and Awe: His Subjugation version has his rapier imbued with lightning-generating technology, and his special attacks now cause lightning strikes and release a powerful wave of electricity when he performs them.
Emma[]
A female mechanic in the Rebel Army. Well-known for creating complex and expensive new weapons despite the Army's strict budget.
Emma tropes:
- Hammerspace: Emma's primary weapon in battle is a contraption which can somehow conjure up different projectiles to attack the enemy with, including massive missiles and even meteors despite it being just a little larger than Emma herself.
- Heroic BSOD: When defeated, Emma's weapon breaks down, and she collapses, stunned and shocked. Averted if she is defeated with a critical hit, as her weapon shakes and explodes, killing her in the explosion.
- Opaque Nerd Glasses: Has swirly glasses that are opaque at first. They later become clear in her Subjugation tactics version.

A female officer in the Rebel Army, and Beatriz's rival. As opposed to Beatriz's ice-based attacks, Grazia uses flame-based weapons and is the leader of the Blaze Brigade.
Grazia tropes:
- Fiery Redhead: Checks all the boxes, as she has red hair, is rather boastful, and attacks with fire.
- Fire-breathing Weapon: Her primary weapon is a flamethrower, and her special attacks generally involve summoning a machine from below the ground, which surfaces and spews out massive amounts of fire. Her Subjugation Tactics version has the machine create massive dragon-shaped flames, which linger on the screen and do large amounts of damage to enemies.
- Noblewoman's Laugh: Not quite an evil laugh, but she does one of these during her victory animation.
- Panty Shot: When killed, Grazia's body tumbles backward, and her pants become undone, sliding down her hips to expose her yellow panties as she dies.
- The Rival: To Beatriz, both in terms of their attitude to each other as well as their choice of weaponry. Interestingly, Grazia is on good terms with Abigail, however, the latter having helped fund the Blaze Brigade.
Julia[]
A female soldier who often goes into battle with Allen Junior. It's strongly implied that the two share a romantic relationship.
Julia tropes:
- Badass Driver: Drives a jeep into battle with a mounted machine gun. Also carries grenades which she hurls at enemies from her jeep as a special attack.
- Clothing Damage: When Julia is killed, her tank top is torn off, exposing her breasts as her body falls to the ground.

- Panty Shot: When killed, Vicky's body falls off her tank and lands on the ground with her legs in the air, causing her skirt to slide up to expose her white panties. She then dies with her skirt hiked up and her panties visible.
- Skewed Priorities: In one of her Extra Ops, she is more concerned with losing her United Coins than keeping herself safe from the Invaders' attack, angering Beatriz and getting her a scolding.
Naomi[]
A female officer in the Rebel Army who is also the army's drill instructor.

- Panty Shot: Seen when Naomi is killed, as she falls on her back and dies spread-eagle with her crotch facing the screen, exposing her green panties.

Loretta[]
A female officer in the Blaze Brigade, who acts as Grazia's second-in-command.
Loretta tropes:
- Fire-Breathing Weapon: Like Grazia, Loretta has a large tank which spews fire as its attack, although she rides it into battle instead of having it hidden underground like Grazia does.
- Kill it With Fire: As a member of the Blaze Brigade, all of Loretta's attacks rely on fire-based damage.
- Number Two: Her level of skill in controlling fire-based weapons is apparently on Grazia's level, although she is still considered the second-in-command of the Blaze Brigade.
- Panty Shot: When killed, Loretta's body falls off her tank and lands on the ground with her buttocks facing the screen, her white panties exposed.
Romy[]
A female member of ACE, the brigade led by Abigail in the Rebel Army. Rides a tank with mounted machine guns and a laser cannon into battle.

- Missile Lock-On: Her tank's standard attack is to lock onto an enemy and continuously fire its machine guns at them.
- Trademark Favorite Food: States in her description that she eats a bowl of seaweed soup every day, presumably to maintain her hair.

A female soldier and mechanic in the Ptolemaic Army, who tends to like piloting and using drill-based weapons and mechs.
Towa tropes:
- Join Or Die: Towa was originally caught stealing supplies from the Ptolemaic Army, and was about to be executed by Dragunov. Fortunately for her, Caroline stepped in and convinced Dragunov to offer Towa a chance to join them - or be killed. Needless to say, Towa accepted the offer.
- Meganekko: Her face looks somewhat similar to Fio's, with glasses to top it off.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: When defeated, her mech flashes orange, and Towa jumps out and runs away before it explodes. In her Rebellion version, however, Towa is somehow unable to escape, and can be seen screaming in fear before her mech explodes, killing her and sending her body sprawling.

Owen tropes:
- Good Old Fisticuffs: His fighting style incorporates powerful punches which deal extremely high damage at close range.

A young ninja who is also Yoshino's apprentice. Fights with a bladed kama on a chain.
Sho tropes:
- Dodge the Bullet: Has a very high dodge chance against incoming attacks, and when upgraded has the highest dodge chance among characters in the game who can evade attacks. When doing so, he disappears, leaving a tree log where he used to be.
- Passing the Torch: Sho's ninja techniques were taught to him by Yoshino, especially his evasive and dodging abilities. Interestingly, his dodge chance is even higher than Yoshino's.

- Oh Crap: When her health is depleted, her throne starts to explode, and she starts visibly panicking before dying in the explosion.
- Undignified Death: Despite her elegance, her death has her screaming in fear before she is killed by her exploding throne, after which her body sprawls over the wreckage with her clothes torn and her legs splayed.
- Wild Card: While allied with the Ptolemaic Army, Anastasia herself does not trust them, and her loyalty is in fact feigned. It is as yet unknown whether she will continue taking their side, or another over the course of the war.

Mizuna tropes:

Professor Aionion tropes:
- Came Back Strong: After being ambushed while unarmed and defeated by Abigail, he comes back in a backup clone body he had prepared from before, although it is aged and fragile. He hence develops a powerful organic weapon which protects him and allows him to use plasma and explosion-based attacks. In one of his Extra Ops, he re-engages Abigail and her sister Beatriz in battle, easily defeating and killing both girls.
- Deadly Disc: His organic weapon in his Aionion form conjures a barrage of plasma discs as its primary attack, which can pierce through enemy units.
- Meaningful Name: His nickname "Aionion" is Greek for "eternal", which is indicative of his constant resurrections despite falling in battle due to his cloning technology and contingency plans.
- Vague Age: Despite appearing fairly young in his initial incarnations, it is impossible to determine the professor's age due to his repeated resurrections.
- Victory is Boring: After killing Abigail and Beatriz, he stands over the sisters' lifeless bodies and laments that his new weapon was too powerful, as the girls died too quickly and gave him little data to improve his abilities with.

- Disappeared Dad: Her personal mission is to find her father, who disappeared when he was out looking for the Arabian Tears, which are a sparkling purple jewel.
- Pinball Projectile: The bullets fired by her revolver bounce off the sides of the screen, and are capable of hitting enemies multiple times and knocking them back.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Actually describes her camel, as when her health is depleted, Scotia herself is killed and she slumps backward over her camel, which proceeds to turn around and rush off the battlefield with her dead body on it.
Red Goblin[]
A young man who is the leader of the Red Goblin Society, a rebel group which aims to defeat Ptolemaios.
Red Goblin tropes:
- Blade Spam: Most of his attacks involve slashing multiple times with his plasma blades. His attacks also have the ability to nullify incoming enemy ranged attacks, making him almost invulnerable to them and allowing him to quickly get in-close with his enemies, where he can do the most damage.
- Came Back Strong: After being defeated by Ptolemaios, Red Goblin was believed to have died, but in fact survived and was training with the mystic Ichima. He later comes back in his Awakened incarnation, far more powerful and able to use spiritual attacks with his dual-wielded plasma sabers.

- Blank White Eyes: Part of her death animation, as when she is killed, she gapes in pain and shock with her eyes going completely white for a few seconds before she falls onto her back.

White Baby[]
A computer virus created by the Amadeus Syndicate. Takes the form of a young girl with a teddy bear, and is able to project a mass hologram of herself like MS-Alice.

- Big Sister Bully: Often teases and bullies her little sister Iron Fortress.
- Creepy Child: Gives off this impression, as her avatar is that of a fair-skinned young girl who gives off creepy giggles and has rather destructive tendencies. The teddy bear she carries around with her while she is razing the enemy to the ground in combat adds to this image.
- Easter Egg: If MS-Alice is on the opposing team and White Baby's team wins, her victory animation will show her holding Alice's limp corpse by her pigtails.
- Foil: To MS-Alice, as while both of them are AI characters with mass avatars, Alice was created by an accident by Marco, whereas White Baby was intentionally created as a super virus to invade and attack enemy computer systems. She then decided it was better to follow her own agenda instead of that of the Syndicate, although her goals generally align with that of her leaders.
- Frickin' Laser Beams: Most of her attack involve her summoning powerful lasers to attack enemies, either with a wink or a snap of her fingers.
- Panty Shot: Upon defeat, her physical form is electrocuted, causing her to arch her back and convulse violently with her thighs spread apart, exposing her red polka-dotted panties. Her dead body then falls on her back with her panty-clad crotch facing the screen before vanishing.
- Super Prototype: The original version of White Baby in Metal Slug Attack was in fact a prototype that still managed to kill most of the other Regular Army's AI girls. Her later incarnations are her "finalized" version.
