Anime[]
Season 1[]
Episode 2:
- Tohru holds a copy of Tsuru no Ongaeshi ("The crane repays a debt"), while telling Kobayashi not to peek in the kitchen while she makes dinner, which is a reference to the crane telling the elderly couple that saved her, not to enter her room while she makes their cloth.
- In the dub, Kobayashi thinks up the following when flicking treats for Kanna: "How to tame your dragon."
Episode 3:
- Takiya and Fafnir play what looks like Dark Souls. It's a bit different because the real Dark Souls does not permit gameplay to be paused.
- On a day after the house party, Tohru and Kanna play a Mario Kart-like game called "Vegetable Racer", which Saikawa also has in her house in episode 6.
- Dub-only: When Tohru explains what Fafnir is like as a dragon, Kobayashi replies, "You mean hobbit-style?"
Episode 5:
- Dub-only: When Kobayashi says anyone can do magic tricks if they learn, Tohru remembers a "should-be-forgettable movie that talks about it", despite having only lived in Kobayashi's world for a few months at this point.
Episode 9:
- During the scavenger hunt event of the sports festival, Shouta brings Lucoa to the referee and passes his slip, which reads "World Class" and is punctuated with the Super Mario Bros. coin sound effect.
Episode 10:
- Kanna's Magical Girl attack during the play is almost a carbon copy of Chibiusa's first attack from Sailor Moon: Pink Sugar Heart Attack. It is even aimed Tohru's face, which also typically happened on Sailor Moon.
Episode 11:
- During the New Year's midnight feast, Tohru tries to feed Kobayashi a cooked portion of her tail again. In the dub only, they have a Green Eggs and Ham-style exchange of lines.
Season 2[]
Episode 1:
- During her maid café shift, Tohru uses a pentagram to cast an incantation which would improve the quality of the food she serves (and even imparts this to her colleagues). Said incantation ends with the phrase "Moe moe kyun!" This was also in the corresponding manga chapter; Kyoto Animation essentially maintained the callback to one of their own previous works. However, the callback is lost in the dub because it does not translate "Moe moe kyun", as Funimation, who dubs Dragon Maid, did not dub K-On!.
Manga[]
Chapter 9:
- Tohru references having watched "The Ma·rix" on TV. In the anime, this is changed to an unnamed show about a stealth robbery.
Chapter 11:
- Kobayashi references "Pok·mon" after hearing about Tohru's struggles to live in one place. The anime removes this reference, and Kobayashi instead says, "You were like a rare monster".
Chapter 35:
- The end of the chapter is a reference to the meme "They had lots of sex afterwards."
