The game changed many details of the established canon, some important, some less so. Of course, whether or not that matters at all, is a matter of varying mileage.

  • Broken Base: The story in a nutshell. Especially regarding Kung Lao's more arrogant and Hot-Blooded behavior, the borderline Idiot Plot, and most of all Jade's death since the murdered character has a pretty big role in other games.
  • Character Rerailment: Towards Jax (retroactively from Special Forces and Deadly Alliance), the game seem to be closer in line with Jax's original characterization. Justified in that it's supposed to be a retelling of MK2.
  • Dork Age: Kung Lao's portrayal in Shaolin Monks. He's jealous of Liu Kang, when in the past he had only cared for the protection of Earthrealm. It became canon as of Armageddon, with his ending, and there are some shades of it in Mortal Kombat 9, although there he at least has the primary motive of avenging the death of his ancestor and past self at the hands of Goro.
  • Nightmare Fuel Station Attendant: Mileena.
