My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic/Characters/Minor Characters

The supporting and minor characters that help fill out the series but don't fit nicely into other categories. These are characters that are more or less the Supporting Cast and they're actively involved in the plot of an episode (and don't fit into another category such as Mane Family Members or Celebronies). The next step down from here are the Background Ponies who largely lack distinct in-show personalities though may still have a few lines or minor impact.

Supporting Cast

These characters have appeared in multiple episodes and often play important roles in the lives of the Mane Cast and the Cutie Mark Crusaders.

The Mayor of Ponyville

Debut: "Friendship Is Magic, Part 1" ("Mare in the Moon")

Voiced by Cathy Weseluck

A beige Earth Pony with a wavy gray (naturally pink) mane and tail, the Mayor is a somewhat ineffectual leader who doesn't seem to carry as much authority as Twilight, the official representative of Princess Celestia in Ponyville.

• Authority in Name Only: Played with, as while Twilight Sparkle tends to have more "weight" than her, both Celestia and Luna recognizes the Mayor as an authority figure and treat her with such respect.
• Blue Eyes
• Cool Old Lady: Or at least middle-aged lady.
• Dye Hard: "Ponyville Confidential" reveals that her mane and tail are naturally pink.
• Expy: She looks like a duller and older version of Flitter Flutter in G3.5 and even shares a job with her. Plus her mane and tail are naturally pink, similar to Flitter Flutter's pink-and-purple.
• No Name Given: Often Fan Nicknamed 'Mayor Mare'.
• The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Played with:
  • In "Dragonshy", she's nowhere to be seen and it's Twilight who informs the townsponies about the dragon smoke and Princess Celestia's orders to her to solve the problem.
  • In "Winter Wrap Up", the only duty of her office that the Mayor exercises is to give an inspirational speech that fails to motivate the town to get their job done on time but after Twilight shows that she has better organizational skills than the rest of the town, the Mayor is seen to work just as hard as everypony else through the night.
  • In "A Bird in the Hoof", her request to speak with Celestia was enough for the princess to cut the party short.
  • In "The Best Night Ever", she apparently went to Canterlot for the Grand Galloping Gala (the beginning of it, at least).
  • In "Lesson Zero", she's seen relaxing outside (until she notices the commotion).
  • In "Luna Eclipsed" she's the one behind Nightmare Night's celebrations.
• Power Hair: Her mane seems to be tied into a tight bun in the back.
• Rose Maned Mare: This was proven in Ponyville Confidential.
• Ruling Couple: Implied during the episode "A Friend in Deed" where she's shown next to a stallion of her age with a scroll Cutie Mark that implies an administrative talent. A young mare with a hammer Cutie Mark (implying she's a judge) is with them, hinting she's their daughter.
• Stealth Pun: She's the mare of Ponyville. The old grey (haired) mare at that. And if she seems ineffective at her job, it's because she ain't what she used to be.
• Vague Age: Unlike with the Cakes (whom Word of God has specifically stated to be middle-aged), her exact age is difficult to pin down. Her mane and tail are only dyed gray, and "A Friend in Deed" shows her with what seems to be a husband and an adult daughter, though it's possible they may simply be other members of the town council.
• White Maned Pretty Mare: This is actually subverted, as her mane is actually pink.
• You All Look Familiar: Not usually, but when she's shown from overhead in "Suited For Success", "The Best Night Ever", and "A Friend in Deed", multiple copies of her appear at once.
• Younger Than She Looks: Her mane and tail are naturally pink, and she dyes them gray; though she may simply be embarrassed by the color.

Zecora

Debut: "Bridle Gossip"

Voiced by Brenda Crichlow

A mysterious zebra who lives in the Everfree Forest. Most of the ponies distrust her at first because of her unusual appearance, and her seemingly cryptic warnings don't help her reputation. Afterwards she becomes a helpful ally towards the ponies, using her knowledge of magical herbs and creatures to assist the six.

• As Long as It Sounds Foreign: Word of God is that they wanted Zecora to be speaking authentic Swahili in "Bridle Gossip" but they didn't have the time or resources. Instead they got the voice actor to make up some African-sounding gibberish. Lauren Faust said that she likes to imagine Zecora is speaking Zebra in lieu of Swahili.
• Bilingual Bonus / This Is My Name on Foreign: "Zecora" means "zebra" in the Oromo language of Ethiopia.
• Bifauxnen: While Zecora is clearly female, she has the squared off muzzle and lack of eyelashes as a male.
• Blue Eyes
• Black Cloak / In the Hood: Zecora wears an eerie cloak with a face-concealing hood during her debut episode. It can be infered she wears it for protection, as the road to her hut crosses through a large patch of Poison Joke.
• Fantastic Racism: A victim of it.
• Friend To All Foals: She leads the foals around on Nightmare Night. This makes sense when you consider the fact that Apple Bloom, who's a filly, was the first to befriend her.
• Glowing Eyes of Doom: Appears to have glowing sinister yellow eyes sometimes when her face is hidden under her cloak though that could just be the perception of the mane cast seeing her as an "evil enchantress".
• Good All Along
• Hartman Hips: She has by far the fattest and most rotund posterior out of most of the female cast - big enough to make her hind legs disproportionately small. Possibly Played for Laughs, as rear viewing of her shows that her back legs have to "waddle" due to the size of her rear, rather than walk like the rest of the cast.
• I Just Want to Have Friends: At the end of her debut episode, her wish for friends comes true when the ponies finally befriend her. By the episode Luna Eclipsed, it would seem that the town has embraced her as she leads an event on Nightmare Night.
• Intergenerational Friendship: Applebloom, the first pony to make friends with her, is still the pony that has the most screentime with her.
• Large Ham: "Beware, BEWARE, you ponyfolk!"
• Lighter and Softer: She sounds considerably less... sinister when she recalls the way she warned the ponies about the Poison Joke.
• Magical Zebra
• Master of Illusion: In "Luna Eclipsed", Zecora tells the fillies about Nightmare Moon and uses green dust to conjure up illusions of her.
• The Mentor: Word of God is that she was meant to be an alternate mentor to Twilight Sparkle at first but the de-emphasis of adventure stories in the first season (because slice-of-life stories were easier to write quickly) caused the idea to fall through.
• Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: Though unlike most examples the town actually sees her every month when she comes into town but the fact she lives alone in the woods (the Everfree Forest no less) that everypony fears makes everypony unfairly assume she's an evil witch.
• Out of Focus: She is mostly absent from Season 1, appearing only in "Bridle Gossip" and "Swarm of the Century".
  • Averted in Season 2 as she's had several small roles in several episodes.
• Poor Communication Kills: When it came to the Poison Joke, if she'd just told the ponies it was a poisonous plant instead of speaking in cryptic rhyme to an already suspicious and fearful group, then the rest of the episode would have gone a lot differently.
  • Possibly justified by the fact that she was new in Ponyville, so she was probably still learning pony language.
• Rhymes on a Dime
  • Particularly impressive in "The Cutie Pox", where she sets herself up to make a rhyme with "tooth" before she sees that Apple Bloom chipped her tooth (though from Apple Bloom's posture, it was an easy guess).
• Spell My Name with an "S": Closed captions spell her name as "Zakora."
• Stealth Hi Bye: How she exits at the end of The Cutie Pox.
• Translation Convention: When alone in her hut, she talks to herself in English even though her first language appears to be the pseudo-Swahili she yells in when pissed.
• Witch Doctor

Miss Cheerilee

First Appearance (Background): "Boast Busters" Full Debut: "Call of the Cutie"

Voiced by Nicole Oliver

The lone teacher in Ponyville's school. An Earth Pony, Cheerilee sports a cherry-colored coat with a pink/cherry mane topped with a kind and cheerful attitude. The cartoon uses some nods to the 80s to imply that Cheerilee's age may be around her mid 30s.

• All There in the Script: Until season 2, her name had only come up in The Merch and the Expanded Universe (specifically, in the toys and the iOS game Twilight Sparkle: Teacher for a Day). It was first mentioned on the show in "Lesson Zero" and she was first addressed by name in "The Cutie Pox".
• Artistic Age: Appears as a filly in Rarity's Flash Back during "The Cutie Mark Chronicles", implying she's about the same age as Rarity. (Cheerilee isn't identified in the episode but the Ponyville Schoolhouse toy has a picture that shows filly Cheerilee wearing the same costume as in the episode which all but confirms her identity.)
• Ascended Extra: Cheerilee was fairly popular in G3 so Hasbro made her the 8th pony of a Happy Meal toy set from McDonald's. She's also included in a later set.
• Breakout Character: Season 2 is slowly turning her into one.
• Chekhov's Gunman: After making a few appearances in Adventures in Ponyville, she remained a silent background pony who happened to be in the opening. Then at the beginning of "Call of the Cutie", she suddenly got a single long scene that gave her an important job and a personality.
• Cool Teacher
• The Eighties: Played for laughs when Cheerilee shows to her class a picture of her younger self wearing typical (and gaudy) 80s attire.
• Eighties Hair: "Yes I know, but honestly; that's how everypony was wearing their mane back then."
• Embarrassing Nickname: Creates one without intending to ("Blank Flank") which quickly catches on and is used by the school bullies to humiliate Ponies who still lack a Cutie Mark.
• Era Specific Personality: G3 Cheerilee is Rarity's adviser and is mature. G3.5 Cheerilee loves to play, read stories to her little sister Scootaloo and comb her friend's manes in fancy different styles. FiM Cheerilee is a young adult with a calm and responsible personality and is in charge of educating Ponyville's fillies and colts.
• Expy: Of G3 and G3.5 Cheerilee.
• Friend to All Children: It goes with the territory considering she's loved by all her students, but even Spike seems to like her, even before she gave him a hat for his birthday.
• Friend to Bugs: In the toys at least; the Cheerilee toy is accompanied by a ladybug.
• Genre Savvy: She's pretty quick to realize that she's being set up with Big Mac. Though nopony would have been counting on a love potion.
• Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: She's a good deal smaller than Big Macintosh, which is extremely noticeable when the Cutie Mark Crusaders try to set them up together.
• I Was Quite a Fashion Victim: Could also be considered a self-deprecating call-back to the more...ill-advised G1 My Little Ponies.
• Ms. Exposition: She often fills this role in the episodes she's in such as explaining what a cutie mark is to a classroom almost full of students who already have theirs.
• Nice Hat: She doesn't wear one but happens to have one in her grocery bag (a white fedora with a red band and feather) and gives it to Spike on his birthday.
• Off-Model: Quite a few animation errors have happened with her, the most common one being the top of her normally two-toned mane becoming solid-colored.
• Old Maid: She tries to hide her frustration, but it's clear she isn't happy about being one.
• Pair the Spares: A literal case, as the CMC pairs her up with Big Macintosh in the episode "Hearts and Hooves Day" because she didn't had a date and Big Macintosh was the only "good" stallion they could find available at that moment.
  • Ship Tease: After the madness dies down, the last scene of the episode is Cheerilee and Big Macintosh going on a picnic. Whether they're going on an actual date or just teasing the Cutie Mark Crusaders is left open.
• Rose Haired Pony
• Schoolmarm: A textbook example of this.
• Stepford Smiler: She displays a type A during "Hearts and Hooves Day".
• You Don't Look Like You: Her Cutie Mark looks different in most stock art and the toys. (Strangely, the stock art used on most of the toys' packaging has it match the show instead of the toys.) On top of that, her fully-molded toy and collector card both depict her as a Palette Swap of Applejack.

Mr. & Mrs. Cake

Debut: "Applebuck Season"

Voiced by Tabitha St. Germain (Mrs. Cup Cake)

Mr. Carrot Cake and Mrs. Cup Cake are a middle-aged Earth Pony couple. They own Sugarcube Corner, the bakery where Pinkie Pie works, holds her parties and apparently resides as their live-in helper. Kind and friendly, this older couple has shown saintlike patience for Pinkie Pie's antics...especially after the poisonous muffins fiasco (though that wasn't actually her fault) and Pinkie's appetite at the beginning of "Swarm of the Century". So far they're one of the few married couples seen in Ponyville. As of "Baby Cakes", they're now parents to baby twins Pound and Pumpkin Cake.

• Alliterative Name
• All There in the Script: Until season 2, their first names had only been revealed by Word of God and used by the German and Swiss Nickelodeon and German Nick Jr. websites. They were first referred to by their full names on the show in "Baby Cakes".
• Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: Mrs. Cake's mane looks like pink frosting.
• Benevolent Boss
• Family Business
• Fat and Skinny
• Gingerbread House: The bakery roof is literally shaped like a gingerbread house with two cupcakes and a slab of rock candy on top.
• Happily Married
• Like A Daughter To Us: Pinkie may not be their biological daughter, but they still love her like she is.
• Malt Shop: For Ponyville's standards, their place acts like this.
• Masculine Lines Feminine Curves
• Nice Hats
• Non Standard Character Design: They look purposely older than the other ponies. Mrs. Cake has the same chubby build as Rarity & Sweetie Belle's mom and Mr. Cake sports a Lantern Jaw of Justice seen on very few other ponies.
• Panicky Expectant Father: Normally Mr. Cake keeps an impeccable aspect but when his twins are finally born, he looks as if he were returning from war with his messy hair, untied bowtie and unshaven beard.
• Parental Substitute: While Pinkie Pie isn't their daughter, Word of God confirms that they still see her as such.
• Perma Stubble: Mr. Cake gets an awesome version of this while he's waiting for the birth of his twins.
• Supreme Chef: The cartoon presented them as this very early on, but their Marzipan Mascarpone Meringue Madness (MMMM to short) definitely cemented them as Supreme Chefs.
• Unto Us a Son and Daughter Are Born: Pound and Pumpkin Cake, respectively.

Pound and Pumpkin Cake

Debut: "Baby Cakes"

Voiced by Tabitha St. Germain (Pound) and Andrea Libman (Pumpkin)

Mr. and Mrs. Cake's twin babies. Pound is a Pegasus colt and Pumpkin is a Unicorn filly, explained by Mr. and Mrs. Cake having Unicorn and Pegasus ancestors respectively. Pinkie adores them as new playmates.

• Babies Make Everything Better: Subverted; the twins are cute and all but as Pinkie found out the hard way, require a lot of responsibility. Particularly when the Pegasus and Unicorn genes really start kicking in.
• Brainy Baby: Both babies are incredibly intelligent for their age.
• Brother-Sister Team: Even at the age of one month, they're inseparable.
• Child Prodigy: We'd better hope this is what the twins are, because if their abilities are only average for Pegasus and Unicorn babies, it would mean Scootaloo, Sweetie Belle and Filly!Fluttershy are/were developmentally disabled.
  • Rainbow Dash guesses (correctly) that Pound will probably be "all over the place" once he starts using his wings, and Rarity says that baby unicorns get strange magic surges that come and go. Those comments imply that the babies' abilities are getting a temporary boost when they first emerge, but only future appearances will tell for sure.
  • Also suggested for Pound Cake is that the only reasons he flies so well so young is a combination of his Super Strength and the fact that he still has a body small enough for his wings to carry. Scootaloo and filly!Fluttershy have/had the inverse, that is wings too small to carry their bodies.
    • Wait, are you saying what wings grow at a diferent rate than the body?. Really?.
• Color-Coded Wizardry: Pumpkin's magic aura is light blue.
• Cross-Dressing Voices: Well, Pound Cake is male and both the actresses are female, so...
• Hollywood Genetics: Mr. Cake's great-great-great-great-grandfather was a Unicorn and Mrs Cake's aunt's-second-cousin-twice-removed was a Pegasus; "that makes sense right?"
  • Continuity Nod: Lauren Faust confirmed similar scenarios were possible during season one.
  • And to be fair, Mr. Cake's explanation of why Pound Cake is a pegasus does mean that there would be a pegasus in Mrs. Cakes family that is more closely related to her, and thus could pass on the genes.
• Innocent Prodigies
• Meaningful Name: Pound Cake. Guess what he likes to do?
• My God, What Have I Done?: They have a limited version of this when their antics reduce Pinkie Pie to tears.
• Oral Fixation Fixation: Pumpkin is constantly trying to chew on anything she can get her hooves on.
• Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Pound is strong enough to lift and carry an adult pony at high speeds in flight.
• Silent Snarker: Quite a lot, at least when they're silent.
• Strong Family Resemblance: Pumpkin is colored exactly like her father.
• Superpowerful Genetics: According to Mr. Cake, a pony of one type can have offspring of another type, depending on the family tree.
• Wall Crawl: Pound can achieve this using his flight.
• Wild Magic: Pumpkin rivals Twilight for magical prowess at only one month old, levitating herself and passing through solid objects.

Snips & Snails

Debut: "Boast Busters"

Voiced by Lee Tockar (Snips) and Richard Ian Cox (Snails)

Two Unicorn colts with a penchant for making trouble.

• Adorkable: Both of them, Snails especially
• Attention Horses: They actually ENJOY the humiliating Gabby Gums article the CMC wrote about them, and repeat their chewing gum accident for an audience.
• Beady Eyed Losers
• Big Eater: Snails can chomp half of a cake with a single bite. Applejack's game from Adventures in Ponyville also shows them sneaking onto Applejack's farm and eating everything in sight if the player doesn't chase them away.
• Big Ol' Eyebrows: Snips.
• Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Snails plays boke to Snips's tsukkomi, first with the Are You Pondering What I'm Pondering? moment and then again during their magic show in "Show Stoppers".
• By the Lights of Their Eyes: In "Boast Busters".
• Canada, Eh?: Snails sounds like he comes from the Great White North, eh?
• Cloudcuckoolander: Snails, often annoying Snips.
• Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Downplayed on the "badass" part, but this still applies; while the two aren't very bright, Snails is shown to be the only unicorn his age to be able to use magic (albeit with a bit of difficulty) and can buck Snips pretty far in Ponyville Confidential. They can also run rather quickly and don't even slow down when Spike gets dragged along, adding weight.
  • They also both go into the Everfree Forest at night. Given how even the mane six are shown to be scared of that place several times, day or night, you gotta admit, that's pretty brave.
• The Ditz: Snails is inarguably the dumbest character on the show.
  • But strangely enough, he's the only Unicorn in his class shown using magic even for a basic spell.
• Dogged Nice Guys: To Trixie.
• Early-Bird Cameo: First appeared in Applejack's game from Adventures in Ponyville, thus earning a bad reputation among players for their thieving ways.
• Expy: Snails looks like a taller male version of G1's Squirmy.
• Fanboys: They're Trixie's biggest fans in "Boast Busters" and they're shown to be members of the Rainbow Dash Fan Club in "The Mysterious Mare Do Well".
  • If you look carefully, they are the only members of Rainbow Dash's fan club to have t-shirts with Rainbow Dash's picture in a heart. Combined with their possible crush on Trixie, they might have a thing for blue mares.
• Fat and Skinny: Snips is short and round while Snails is tall and slender.
• Free Range Colts: They both go all alone in the middle of night into the Everfree Forest.
• Gag Haircut: When the duo get their rumps stuck together with bubble gum, the haircut they get to cut the gum out leaves them with bald patches on their butts and tails.
• The Klutzes: Oh yes, very much.
• Light Is Good: Snails can use light magic, and him and Snips are overall pretty good guys.
• Meaningful Name: "Snips and snails and puppy dog tails — that's what little boys are made of."
  • This could also be a reference to The Powerpuff Girls considering the fact that those are some of the ingredients for The Rowdyruff Boys, and Lauren Faust worked along side her husband Craig McCracken on that show.
• Non Standard Character Design: They look very different from all of the other ponies. Snips barely even looks like a pony.
• Precocious Crush: The standalone version of Applejack's game from Adventures in Ponyville has hearts appear over them when the player runs towards them to chase them away. The hearts are most likely just a replacement for Adventures in Ponyville's Friendship Sparkles but still...
  • Also, while they haven't been canonically confirmed to have a crush on Trixie, there's room for interpreting them as such, given the extent of admiration they have for her, their knee-jerk responses to any insinuation that she'd lie, and their semi-stalkerish ways...
  • Stalker With/Without A Crush: ... such as wanting to talk to her after the show, even when she makes clear she'd rather be left alone, etc...
• Stop Helping Me!: Trixie's response when they bring the Ursa Minor into Ponyville so she can "vanquish" it.
• Simpleton Voice
• Those Two Guys
• Too Dumb to Live: Or if one is feeling more charitably inclined, Children Are Innocent.
• Youthful Freckles: Snails.

Twist

Debut: "Call of the Cutie"

A friend of Apple Bloom'th from thchool, the'th an Earth Pony filly with frizzy red hair and glatheth ath well ath a heavy lithp. Like Apple Bloom, she starts "Call of the Cutie" without having discovered her mark and gets teased for it. She gets her cutie mark in the same episode (off-screen): a pair of candy canes due to her love of making candy.

• Adorkable: Very very much. Though her dorky lisp seems to have a very polarizing effect on the fanbase.
• Cheerful Child: "I've got thome peppermint thticks. I made them myself! They'll make you thmiiile!"
• Expy: Of G1 Twist.
  • Her appearance has a noticeable resemblance to Pepper Ann.
• Meganekko
• Non Standard Character Design: She's a bit lankier than most fillies her age and has a more bulbous nose.
• Pair the Spares/Puppy Love: Surprisingly, the episode "Hearts and Hooves Day" paired her up with "Truffle Shuffle", much to the chagrin of "Tootsie Flute", who was either interested in him or Twist herself.
• Quirky Curls
• Sweet Tooth: "Ith it a powdered donut? Becauth that thounds delithouth!"
• Thpeech Impediment
• Trademark Favorite Food: It's uncertain if she loves eating peppermint sticks...ahem; excuse me; "Peppermint Thtickth" as much as she loves making them.
• What Happened to the Mouse?: She appeared to be a good friend of Apple Bloom's in "Call of the Cutie" but ever since Apple Bloom hooked up with the Cutie Mark Crusaders, poor Twist has only talked to her once since then, even though she sometimes still shows up with them.

The Canterlot Royal Guard

Light Pegasus Guards' Debut: "Friendship is Magic, Part 1" ("Mare in the Moon") Unicorn Guards' Debut: "The Cutie Mark Chronicles" Bat-Winged Pegasus Guards' Debut: "Luna Eclipsed" Other Guards' Debut: "A Canterlot Wedding - Part 1"

Voiced by Jayson Thiessen

Canterlot's defenders who serve under Shining Armor. These armored stallions show up wherever Canterlot needs extra security and also serve as the Princesses' personal bodyguards. Pegasus guards are usually seen escorting the princesses or as royal flying carriage pullers. Unicorn guards are generally seen around Canterlot and performing some ceremonial procedures.

• Audible Sharpness: Their wings. The second season gives us evidence that Pegasus wings actually can be that sharp.
• Blade on a Stick: The only weapon they've been seen wielding, so far.
• British Royal Guards: the show has its own version of the trope; The Princess Royal Guards of Equestria are as disciplined and stoic as the British Royal Guards. Rainbow Dash annoys them, making small talk and funny faces; the guards don't react to her at all. They only moved a muscle when Fluttershy tries to enter the building they were guarding. And when Rainbow Dash convinces Philomeena to tickle their noses.
• Color-Coded Wizardry: Golden yellow (same as Celestia's) or light blue for "normal" unicorn guards, silver gray for the Canterlot Archives unicorn guards.
• Creator Cameo: When they actually speak, anyway.
• Dark Is Not Evil: See below
  • In addition to the bat-winged pegasus guards, the nighttime Canterlot Library guards have darker armor than their gold-armored counterparts.
• Evil Counterpart: Luna's royal guards and carriage. Although they're just evil looking than genuinely evil.
  • The Changelings from A Canterlot Wedding are genuinely evil counterparts. Some of them are shown wearing armor with the same color scheme as the Lunar Pegasus Guards.
• Good Wings, Evil Wings: The pegasi that brought Luna into Ponyville have bat wings instead of the usual bird wings.
• Non Standard Character Design: Luna's royal guards look very different from other ponies.
• Praetorian Guard: They serve as the Princesses' personal bodyguards.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: They seem to be mostly for show.
• The Quiet One: They only talk when necessary which is rare in the show.
• Red Shirts: They try to subdue Nightmare Moon in the pilot, but end up being subdued themselves.
• Serious Business: You will almost always see them wearing a serious face whenever they appear.
  • Subverted by one of the guards in the Canterlot library who catches Twilight sneaking around in "It's About Time"; he just cheerfully greets her and opens a door for her before going on his way.
• Winged Unicorn: One of Twilight Sparkle's flashbacks during "A Canterlot Wedding - Part 1" shows three guards (two light, one dark) with unicorn horns and Pegasus wings; Word of God says that this was a Blooper.

The Sorrowful Sea Serpent/"Steven Magnet"

Debut: "Friendship Is Magic, Part 2" ("Elements of Harmony")

Voiced by Lee Tockar

A large purple scaled River Serpent with orange hair encountered in Elements of Harmony whose thrashing made a river uncrossable blocking the ponies' progress. Not a villain though he was simply distressed that a "tacky little cloud" had sliced off his perfect mustache. Not about to let such a crime against "fabulosity" go unanswered Rarity came to his aid and the ponies were graciously allowed to cross. His drama queen antics and metrosexual mindset gave him a notoriety among fans who have dubbed him "Steven Magnet" after a hilariously bad Youtube caption.

• Advertised Extra: Despite only appearing in one episode of the show, he's been in 3 different commercials (even saying his "It's so true!" line in the two American ones): the Hub commercial seen here, this commercial, and the British Boomerang commercial announcing the show's UK premiere.
• All There in the Manual: The script calls him a sea serpent, even though he's only shown in a river.
• Ambiguously Gay: He's absolutely fabulous.
• Audible Sharpness: His scales do this if you pluck one off
• Blind Idiot Translation: His name derives from Youtube's "transcribe audio" feature which generally only produces these.
• The Dandy: As much as possible for a naked scaled serpent and something only Rarity understands.
• Fan Nickname: Steven Magnet from a hilarious Youtube caption.

The settler ponies have overtaken the land and have planted an orchard all over it! Because of their thoughtlessness, we can no longer run over our traditional stampeding grounds...

Debut: "Over a Barrel"

Voiced by Erin Mathews

A buffalo calf from a tribe of buffaloes in Appleloosa. She is first seen participating in a train heist with a herd of other fellow buffalo tribesmen. Rainbow Dash confronted her during the heist on top of the train but she managed to escape along with the cart they were after (with Spike still on board unbeknownst to them). After befriending Spike, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie, she tried to reason with the Chief of her herd and the Apple-loosians on how to settle their differences.

• Beware the Nice Ones: She may be sweet and compassionate but that doesn't mean that she can't take care of herself if she needs to (in fact, we see the "Beware" part before the "Nice" part).
• Cute Lightning Bruiser: Comes with being a buffalo naturally but she's nimble enough to jump onto a moving train and fast enough to temporarily outspeed a flying Rainbow Dash while running.
• Everyone Loves Blondes: One of the reasons for her popularity.
• Indian Maiden
• Meaningful Name: Strong enough to defeat Rainbow Dash, compassionate enough to see the settlers' point of view and attempt to find a solution without resorting to violence. And she's little.
• Non Standard Character Design: In regards to the buffaloes at least; (she's apparently the only buffalo calf in existence and her design looks more like a fawn to some viewers). American bison calves are a light mahogany color in Real Life however; much lighter than their dark brown parents.
  • She's also the only buffalo to wear a headband in the style of northeastern woodland tribes like the Abenaki; all the others (especially Chief Thunderhooves's full headdress) seem more styled after plains-dwelling Native Americans. This may be (accidental) Fridge Brilliance, because plains tribes generally didn't let females wear feathered headdreses, while the northeastern ones often did.

The leader of the Buffalo tribe, he was quite angry at how the Apple-loosians planted apple trees over his tribe's stampeding grounds which had been theirs for a very long time. Eventually he, his tribe and the settler ponies learned the value of compromising.

• Appeal to Tradition: His main argument to why he was so opposed to the settlers planting apple trees over his tribe's stampeding grounds.
• Awesome McCoolname
• Braids, Beads, and Buckskins: The Buffalo tribe all wear eagle feathers, but as the leader, he gets to wear a huge headdress that makes him appear even bigger then he already is.
• Large and In Charge: He practically dwarfs the other characters. His head alone is as large as a pony.
• Lightning Bruiser: Just like other bison, once he gets going, he moves like a freight train.
  • Glass Cannon: However a pie managed to do him in but he got better.
• Tastes Like Friendship: He makes peace with the Appleloosans after discovering how delicious their weapons are.

Sheriff Silverstar

Debut: "Over a Barrel"

An Earth Pony, he's the Sheriff and the main authority figure of the newly founded Appleloosa.

A unicorn with a pink-frosted donut cutie mark, Pony Joe (or Donut Joe) is an old acquaintance of Twilight Sparkle back in Canterlot. Spike stays at Joe's donut shop during "The Best Night Ever", drowning himself in hot chocolate and donuts with extra sprinkles after the rest of the Mane Six go their separate ways at the Grand Galloping Gala to pursue their own goals instead of hanging out together. Joe later appears as one of the bakers entering the National Dessert Competition in "MMMystery on the Friendship Express", having created a confection called Donutopia.

• Aerith and Bob
• All There in the Manual: According to the shirt and bag Pony Joe's, his donut shop is open 24 hours a day. Until "MMMystery on the Friendship Express", his ownership of said donut shop had also only been mentioned by said licensed merchandise.
• American Accents: Seems to sport a New York sort.
• Ascended Extra: His only appearance in Season 1 consisted of two lines in a single scene.
• The Bartender: Even though he isn't exactly a bartender, "The Best Night Ever" treats him as one.

• Drunk on Milk: Spike treats his chocolate drinks and donuts as if they were alcoholic beverages. In fairness, maybe Spike's one of those people who gets loopy when he's had too much sugar which chocolate drinks and doughnuts would definitely cause.
• I'll Tell You When I've Had Enough!: He has this exchange with Spike in "The Best Night Ever" with him playing the part of The Bartender and Spike as The Alcoholic.

Spike: Hey! Pony Joe! Another donut... Joe: Don't you think you've had enough? [Spike slams his cup] Spike: Another donut! Extra sprinkles!

• Non Standard Character Design: His character design is a bit chubbier compared to the show's other large stallions.
• Old Friend: He has known Twilight Sparkle and Spike for some time before they moved to Ponyville.
• Retcon: He was called Pony Joe in "The Best Night Ever", then he was called Doughnut Joe upon his return in "MMMystery on the Friendship Express". The remainder of the latter episode just calls him Joe (and for simplicity's sake, so does this very wiki).

Pipsqueak

Debut: "Luna Eclipsed"

A young Earth Pony colt with a pinto coat and a British accent, he recently moved from Trottingham. He attends his first Nightmare Night ever by dressing up as a Pirate.

• Amazing Technicolor Population: One of the few cases of aversion. Despite his pinto coat appearing odd, his coloring is entirely possible in horses and ponies.
• Cheerful Child
• Early-Bird Cameo: First appeared in the Comic-Con 2011 poster/desktop background (he's the rightmost pony in the Twinkling Balloon).
• Meaningful Name: He's one of the smallest ponies in the show.
• Nightmare Fetishist: He says that Nightmare Night is his favorite night of the year and that having Princess Luna come to Ponyville to frighten them is "scary but fun". Possibly the first pony in history to say that he likes Luna better than Celestia.
• Non Standard Character Design: He's both very small and has a spotted coat.
• Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: He has a British accent at the start of Luna Eclipsed; it doesn't hold up the well in the other scenes.
  • Justified in that he's moved to a new town where no one else has the accent and he's young enough to lose the accent now that he's surrounded by ponies that don't have it.
• Pirate: He dresses up as one for Nightmare Night.

Jet Set & Upper Crust

Your chapeau is too country for them.

Debut: "Sweet and Elite"

Voiced by Peter New (Jet Set)

A snobby married couple who live in Canterlot. They kick off the plot of "Sweet And Elite" when they insult Rarity's breeding and only shut up when they realize Fancypants likes her.

• Alpha Bitch: They're not exactly Alpha but they display all the other typical traits.
• City Mice: They do not like small towns like Ponyville.
• Expy: Very similar to Roderick and Rubella Rat from Tiny Toon Adventures.
• Gratuitous French: Why say "hat" when you can say "chapeau"?
• Happily Married: These Jerk Asses were made for each other.
• Humble Pie: Twice; both times thanks to Fancypants. First when he personally invites Rarity to her balcony seat for the Wonderbolts race right in front of them. The second is at the Garden Party when Fancypants states he likes Rarity and her friends and endorses Rarity's designs, forcing them to suck up to her to save face.
• Idle Rich: And proud of it. They think the fact Rarity makes her own hats is embarrassing once they find out she's not upper class.
• Jerkasses
• Know-Nothing Know-It-All: They are keen to look cultured and tasteful but it seems they know next to nothing and take all their cues from the genuinely refined Fancypants.

• Shadow Archetype: For Rarity. They have the same fussy and selective tastes she does, and her slight shame about coming from Ponyville is amplified when they let her know they think it's a hick town. The important difference between them is Jet Set and Upper Crust use high society as a way to look down on other ponies, and don't have the strength of character to state their own opinion. Rarity on the other hand, is gracious and polite and not afraid to stick up for her friends.
• Slobs Versus Snobs: One very unsympathetic Snob half at the garden party with the Mane 6 being on the sympathetic Slob side.
• Upper Class Twits
• Yes Ponies: Their approval of Rarity is tied to that of Fancypants.

Filthy Rich

Debut: "Family Appreciation Day"

Diamond Tiara's father and one of the richest ponies in Ponyville. Every time a Zap Harvest comes around, he collects the first 100 jars of Granny Smith's signature Zap Apple Jam, a tradition started by his grandfather Stinkin' Rich, which led to the founding of Ponyville.

• Big Ol' Eyebrows
• Embarrassing First Name: Especially when Cheerilee calls him by his first name in front of her class.
  • Last-Name Basis: He prefers to be called "Rich", for obvious reasons.
• Good Parent: If anything, he's aware of Diamond Tiara's rotten personality and it's obvious that he wants to fix it.
• Honest John's Dealership: It's implied that he runs Ponyville's equivalent to Wal-Mart.
• Meaningful Name: He's filthy rich. His cutie mark, 3 money bags each with a dollar sign, doesn't hide this fact either.
• Non Standard Character Design: He looks considerably older than other adult stallions seen in the cartoon.
• Screw the Money, I Have Rules: Unlike his spoiled daughter, he is quite amicable, honorable and doesn't approve of her rude behavior towards the Apple family. Though it's kind of a toss up, because although he acts this way toward his suppliers (which the Apple Family are), he's implied to engage in unfair business practices to undercut his competition and monopolize the local market.
• Theme Naming: Filthy Rich and his grandfather Stinkin' Rich.

Cherry Jubilee

Debut: "The Last Roundup"

An enterprising Earth Pony who owns Cherryhill Ranch, a cherry orchard and processing factory in the town of Dodge Junction. Evidently a fan of rodeos, as this is where she met Applejack.

• American Accents: Dixie; just a tad softer than Applejack's Tennessean drawl.
• Beauty Mark
• Benevolent Boss
• Expy: Of G1 Cherries Jubilee.
• Meaningful Name: She sells cherries.

Doctor "Caramel" / Doctor Stable

Debut: "Read It and Weep"

A no-nonsense unicorn doctor who takes care of Rainbow Dash after she breaks her wing.

• Badass Bookworm: While not as physically imposing as the hospital guards, he can hold his own in a chase and be very threatening if necessary.
• Deadpan Snarker: Especially towards Rainbow Dash.
• Dr. Jerk: More like "Dr. Strict", though.
• Fan Nickname: His name above derives from the fact that he's essentially Caramel as a unicorn pony with a cardiogram cutie mark.
  • His other name is a reference to the medical term "stable condition" and a horse stable.
    • Also, House.
• Good Is Not Dumb: While he's genuinely concerned when Rainbow comes back into the hospital groaning, he quickly sees through her ploy (even if he misunderstands why she's doing it).
• Half-Dressed Cartoon Animal: He is only wearing the upper half of a doctor's uniform.
• No Name Given: He isn't actually named in the show itself.
• Stock Costume Traits: The good doctor wears a regular doctor's uniform except that he isn't wearing any pants.

Cranky Doodle Donkey

Debut: "A Friend in Deed"

Voiced by Richard Newman

A newcomer to Ponyville, Cranky is an old donkey who just wants peace and quiet after years of wandering around Equestria. It turns out part of the reason he's so bitter and lonely is because he's been searching for his long-lost love, Matilda. Pinkie reunites the two at the end of "A Friend in Deed", making him more friendly, but still preferring the quiet life.

• Butt Donkey: Poor, poor Cranky.
• Determinator: He shows incredible perseverance in the face of Pinkie Pie's onslaught of friendship, and later we find out he's been wandering Equestria for decades tirelessly searching for Matilda.

• Dodgy Toupee: His original one does match the tip of hair on his tail, but is revealed to be one in a scene of Cringe Comedy. The replacement Pinkie gives him, the Rarity-made "dreamboat special," doesn't match at all.

An extremely slender Pegasus colt who just earned his cutie mark, which is a feather. He worked as the main photographer and then as editor-in-chief for the school newspaper.

• Da Editor: After Diamond Tiara has the position stripped away from her, he takes over.

• Meaningful Name: He's thin, light and quick, like a featherweight boxer. It could also represent something that is easily pushed around, a wuss in other words (see below).
• Non Standard Character Design: Probably the skinniest pony yet. He also has bigger than average ears and rather prominent front teeth.
• Noodle Ponies: He's very skinny.

Gustave Le Grand

A griffon baker with a French-esque accent and one of the contestants in "MMMystery on the Friendship Express".
