The series concerns a human and his robot friends aboard a satellite forced to watch cheesy movies as part of a science experiment on how they affect the human mind. They respond to the (often) bad movies with tons of snarky comments.
As such, the MST3K Mantra ("It's just a show, I should really just relax") should be kept in mind when trying to analyze the show, as it doesn't take itself or its premise too seriously. However, it is worth noting that the show can be seen as placing its protagonists at the front lines of a 'war' against badly-done entertainment, letting the audience know that the best way to respond to such entertainment is to make fun of it. And it helps that a lot of the movies chosen are of the So Bad It's Good type, and are still somewhat entertaining.
