Never Have I Ever is a 2020 Netflix comedy series by Mindy Kaling. It centres around Indian-American teen girl Devi Vishwakumar and her family, following the recent death of her father.
After a traumatic year, all an Indian-American teen wants is to go from pariah to popular — but friends, family and feelings won’t make it easy on her.[1]
Tropes used in Never Have I Ever include:
- Book Dumb: Paxton is framed as such as he always had everything come easily to him, but it turns out he suffers from low self-esteem because his parents neither encourage nor believe in him. Also, he's never had to try as he was on an athletic scholarship
- Brainy Brunette: Devi and Fabiola.
- Coming Out Story: Fabiola and Jonah
- Closet Key: Eve, for Fabiola
- Cute Bookworm: Fab
- Dawson Casting: Darren Barnet
- Give Geeks a Chance
- Harp of Femininity: Subverted, as Devi has a temper and isn't the stereotypical "demure, quiet, floating" girl/woman, but a real person. It's also tied to her father's support of her to excel, specifically that the harp is a better instrument than other string instruments, eg. the guitar.
- Hollywood Nerd: Devi, Fabiola and Eleanor. Ben Gross.
- Hot Scientist: Kamala
- Love Triangle: Pretty much 5 different ones going on simultaneously and switching up on rotation
- Lovable Jock: Paxton
- Mr. Fanservice: Paxton Hall-Yoshida. He's on the swim team
- Ms. Fanservice: Kamala Nandiwadal
- Narrator: John McEnroe.
- In 1x05 and 2x03, respectively, Andy Samberg and Gigi Hadid narrate
- Nerds Are Virgins: Ben Gross calls Devi and her friends the U.N., which they think is a racist dig but he reveals stands for 'unfuckable nerds'.
- Opposites Attract: Devi and Paxton
- Pair the Smart Ones: Devi and Ben
- Parental Abandonment: Eleanor's mother
- The Power of Love: After Devi's father dies, her legs suddenly become paralysed and she's in a wheelchair for 3 months. She regains use of her legs when she sees Paxton outside of school and stands up to get a better look at him
- Shirtless Scene: Paxton. Quite a few.
