- What Could Have Been:
- According to the documentary Park Chan Wook: Savior of Violence, Dae-su was originally to cut his penis off. Chan-Wook himself states "I didn't particularly have Sophocles in mind when I was working on the script. But I couldn't avoid the association when the idea of incest appeared. Then I gradually came to think of a way to insert a scene in the film that would parallel Oedipus poking his own eyes. My original plan was for Oh Dac su to cut off his own penis after he found out he had sex with his own daughter."
- He also draws a comparison between revenge and incest in another documentary, Revenger's Tragedy: Sight and Sound, "Revenge is a taboo in modern society: everyone has a strong desire for it, but it's prohibited. Incest too is a suppressed desire in all of us - it appears in old tales from all over the world. long before Freud. - Park Chan-wook (in Spencer 2004:19)"
- When Oh Dae-su is singing his school's anthem, it's actually Choi Min Sik singing the anthem of the school he went to as a child.
- In the original manga, the main character was locked up for ten years. The movie changed it to fifteen years to fit in with South Korean statute of limitations (at time of filming).
- Throw It In:
- The angel wings Dae-su buys for Yeon-hee's birthday? Choi Min Sik saw them at a shop during filming and decided to incorporate them into the film.
