• According to The Short Stories on the Tang People (唐人傳奇 Tangren Chuanqi), the Qian Tang Dragon King had a niece that he loved very much. When he found out that her husband abused her, he got so pissed off that he rescued the poor girl and then used his Elemental Powers to flood and destroy the city she lived in, as punishment for the Domestic Abuser and the people who didn't help her in her time of need.
• Athenians explained the name of the Areopagus by saying the first trial there was when Poseidon prosecuted Ares for murder, over the death of his son Alirrothios. Ares was acquited on the defense that he was protecting his daughter Alkippe from being raped by Alirrothios.
  • Though he still only won because there were more goddesses than gods voting. All the gods sided with Poseidon.
• The only reason Poseidon made Odysseus' journey home hell was because Odysseus had blinded his son Polyphemus. Polyphemus invoked his father's favor to avenge him, and dad complied.
• Odysseus tried to avoid joining the Trojan War effort by faking madness. He did this by plowing his fields and salting them, effectively ruining his own land. The emissary Palamedes decided to test Odysseus by placing Odysseus' infant son Telemachus in the path of the plow. When Odysseus avoided touching little Telemachus, his cover was blown and had no choice but to go to Troy. Odysseus later got his revenge and the last laugh (sorta) by framing Palamedes for treason and getting him executed.
• There's an old tale about "why cats shed their fur" that had a lady asking her pet cat to take care of her baby as she goes away for a while to get food. Then Satan showed up and tried to collect the baby's soul, but the cat sensed the Devil's presence and he decided to defend the baby. Being a very smart furball, he managed to trick the Devil into pretty much giving up on his purpose; the lady returned to see both cat and baby safe. The only "punishment" the cat received for tricking the Devil was shedding from then on.
• Older Than Print: In the Welsh Mythology cycle, The Mabinogion, Prince Llewellyn the Great goes out, returning to discover his baby son's cradle overturned, the baby missing, and the guart dog Gelert with blood around his mouth. Llywelyn lost it in horror and then drew his sword and killed Gelert, who let out a final dying yelp. Then he heard the baby's cries and discovered he was unharmed under the cradle, along with a dead wolf which had attacked the child. Gelert had killed it, and the blood had been the wolf's — and his own, from wounds received in the child's defense. Llywelyn is overcome with remorse and buries the dog with great ceremony, but can still hear its dying yelp and from then on can never really smile again.
