Pink Girl, Blue Boy

In fiction, and sometimes in Real Life, we tend to differentiate between "girly colors" and boyish ones. It is clearer with babies, when we are prone to see girls dressed in pink and boys in light blue.

What's funny is that this is actually a recent development. In fact, in some cultures, it used to be the opposite: pink was associated with baby boys, because it's derived from red, which is a good masculine color (still is in some countries). Blue used to be feminine (and True-Blue Femininity often still applies), as it was the color of the Virgin Mary.

Note that lots of female characters have had a pink motif that they wear with pride and sheer badassery. Male characters as well, because Real Men Wear Pink. But sometimes, pink is considered too childish and disrespectful, especially to an adult woman, so red may be substituted.

If there are Two Girls to a Team and one is represented by pink, the other girl will usually be represented by purple or fuchsia. A purple girl can be anything from a Goth to a Tomboy to a Proper Lady, while the pink girl is usually The Chick and/or a Genki Girl. While purple/fuchsia on a girl is considered more "mature" than pink, purple boys are often portrayed as weak, infantile, Camp Gay, or oafish; on the other hand, it's a common color for pimps' attire.

Can crop up in many Boys Love and Girls Love stories; the active partner (Seme in BL, Onee-Sama in GL) is unlikely to wear "girly" colors such as pink, but the passive partner (Uke, neko) frequently does, and (especially in GL but sometimes in BL) may even have pink hair.

Advertising

• Huggies is a shining example of this trope. Go ahead, look 'em up on YouTube, and link 'em back here.
• The second Snuggie commercial featured the generic grandfather, father, and son (and dog) with dark blue snuggies. The grandmother, mother and daughter had pink snuggies.
• Luvs once marketed pink and blue diapers for girls and boys respectively. The color-coding was more for the parents' convenience; the diapers' design differed between the ones for boys and the ones for girls: there was more absorbent material either in front (for boys) or beneath (for girls) depending on which one they were intended for. They don't do this any more, possibly for the manufacturer's convenience.
  • Huggies Pullups and other absorbent training pants, on the other hand, continue to be colored in pink and blue, because toilet training tends to coincide with the time when children develop gender roles.

Anime and Manga

• Pictured above: Kyojin no Hoshi has Mitsuru Hanagata and Akiko Hoshi, who dress according to the trope when they go out together. The scene in the picture is from the 2002 OAV's. They ditch this when they actually marry: Akiko tends to dress in purple while Mitsuru is seen a light-gray/almost white suits.
• In Chaos;Head, Rimi has pink hair and Takumi has blue.
• Pops up a lot in Gundam.
  • In the original Mobile Suit Gundam and in Gundam Seed, The Federation had blue uniforms for male enlisted personnel and pink for females (officers wore brown regardless of sex). Later in the SEED series, Cagalli gets a pink Gundam.
  • In Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Soma Peries got a pink mobile suit in season 1 and Nena Trinity wore a pink pilot's suit. In season 2, they switch to red and purple, respectively. Played straight by Louise Halevy and Saji Crossroad in season 1. As well as Setsuna F. Seiei and Feldt Grace starting season 2. Setsuna and Feldt get bonus points for piloting blue Gundams with matching blue pilot suit and being a Rose-Haired Girl respectively.
  • In Gundam AGE's First Generation, a girl (Yurin L'Ciel) is forcibly locked inside the cockpit of a remote-controlled pink mecha so she'll be a living amplifier for a guys X-Rounder powers.
• In fact, lots of Anime tends to have girly pink-haired girls paired up with stoic blue/black-haired guys (think of Sakura and Sasuke and Amu and Ikuto).
  • Cheery, perky Sailor Moon has pink, silver, white, or blond hair in the original manga. Her predestined lover Tuxedo Mask has, depending on the image, dark black, blue, green, or purple hair. When he is married to Sailor Moon, he has pastel purple hair, which appears to be a symbol of his healing due to being with her. As far as costuming is concerned, though, Sailor Moon herself wears white and blue while Tuxedo Mask wears black and red.
    • Speaking of Sailor Moon, the Transformation Sequences for the Sailor Starlights in the first anime involved the background and their bodies changing from blue to pink as they changed from their male disguises to their true female forms.
  • Anyone who couldn't see the Official Couple of Tokyo Mew Mew coming may have ignored this fact. Not only do Ichigo and Masaya have pink and blue hair, respectively (only in the manga, though; the anime changes them to red and black), but their last names are Momomiya and Aoyama! (meaning "peach" and "blue" in Japanese respectively.)
  • Even more ironic, the whole Tokyo Mew Mew team is female and all the aliens are male. In the final battle, where Ichigo blasts her final attack, and Deep Blue releases the Mu Aqua, you can clearly see a clash of pink and blue.
  • Anime hair color is all over the place; can't really associate any one color to a gender. The only exception is pink: guys will never have pink hair, ever. At least, I've never seen it. Probably due the whole "girls can wear pants but guys can't wear dresses" thing.
    • Shuichi begs to differ. Then again, he is the Uke...
    • Mikage from Revolutionary Girl Utena has pink hair, as he is supposed to be a male counterpart to Utena and claim the position of Victor, while his companion Mamiya pretends to be a male Anthy. Although she isn't really pretending.
    • Natsu from Fairy Tail is also an exception. Natsu's one of the few true exceptions (though a character inferred it to be "red" in an early chapter--at least, according to some translations; in the manga, the darkest color it could be is "salmon pink," and in the anime, it's clearly pink). Some male characters in manga and anime DO dye their hair pink, however, such as Raikou, a Badass Samurai from Nabari no Ou, or Shima, an exorcist-in-training in Blue Exorcist.
• In the original Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha mini-scenario of the Triangle Heart 3 ～sweet songs forever～ Lyrical fanbox, Nanoha and Chrono were rivals that became an Official Couple, with Nanoha having a pink motif and Chrono having a blue motif. These motifs were retained in The Anime of the Game even though the two of them weren't the Official Couple there anymore. Chrono's blue motif eventually led to him becoming An Ice Person. Meanwhile, Nanoha's pink motif...well, the anime producers had way too much fun with Nanoha's pink motif by turning her into a pink Person of Mass Destruction with a pink Wave Motion Gun that fires giant pink beams that create huge pink explosions that have left many people metaphorically crapping their pants as they stare into her pink glowy light. Girly pink is Badass.
• The Mu children in Toward the Terra have pink dresses for girls and blue jumpsuits for boys. The adults all wear purple.
• In both the anime and The Movie, Speed Racer typically wears blue and white, while his girlfriend Trixie dons pink and red. However, on formal occasions in the anime, Trixie would wear a blue dress while Speed wore a red blazer.
• Hayate and Hinagiku from Hayate the Combat Butler. It's especially noteworthy as it completely subverts the girly pink-haired girl/stoic blue-haired guy dynamic (just don't tell that to Hinagiku) as Hayate is quite emotional at times and is noted for being very girly while Hinagiku is generally pretty tough and acts more boyish. Like the above example, Hina proves that girly pink can be very Badass and Hayate shows that being a slightly feminine Bishounen is also no handicap on that front.
• Toyed with in the Slayers franchise in regards to the two model couples: for Lina and Gourry, the latter wears blue while the former wears a light shade of magenta. For Zelgadis and Amelia, the latter is a princess who has both a pink dress for diplomatic duties and a modest traveling outfit with some pink touches, while the former is a chimera who literally has blue (or blue-green) colored skin.
• While not exactly pink per say , Erza Scarlet and Jellal Fernandes of Fairy Tail.
• The Faceless Masses in Hidamari Sketch are often colored this way, whether they're hairless and limbless, shaped like restroom signs, or detailed in the outline but still a solid color.
• Shugo Chara has Nagihiko's Guardian Characters, the very pink and (sort of) girlish Temari and the very blue and boyish Rhythm. Also, Seiyo Academy's school uniforms follow the pattern as well, with the girl uniforms being red and the boy uniforms being blue.
• Shows up frequently in Godannar with just about each of the couples/partners' pilot suits, noteably Goh and Anna. Even the more masculine of the two American female robot pilots were darker colors than her cohort (whose pink-and-white costume barely qualified as clothing).
• In case of Puella Magi Madoka Magica, it's more like The Chick Madoka wears pink and the Tomboy Sayaka wears blue.
• Taichi and his baby sister Hikari in Digimon Adventure with Taichi wearing a blue shirt and Hikari pink shorts. Also with Tai and Mimi
  • Their Digimon in their ultimate forms also fit with Angewomon wearing pink and Metal Greymon having blue wings and blue body details, much more obvious with her and Angemon.
  • This is amplified with Taichi and all the girls in the 2020 remake. Sora and Hikari acquire more pink in their base design (in the original Sora's only association with pink was her Digivice) with Sora wearing pink instead of yellow now and Hikari always wearing a pink scarf. Mimi is a little less pink wearing a white hat but still having a pink dress with pink details on her hat, Taichi, on the other hand, fully retains his blue from his original version.
• Jessie and James of Team Rocket from Pokémon.
  • Ash usually wears blue one way or another while his female companions such as Misty have red or pink as in the case of other females like Dawn.
  • As Marina in the side series Legend of Thunder is a girled up version of Kris from Crystal while Jimmy is mostly the same as Ethan, he has the same blue accessories Ethan does (though he still wears red) while Marina has Kris's pink accessories furthermore having a pink shirt, pink sleeves and pink details on her shoes.
• Sharp-eyed Ojamajo Doremi viewers will notice that, even when the girls and boys of Misora Elementary don't use uniforms, the girls generally use red backpacks whereas the boys use blue ones. The only exceptions are Onpu and Momoko, the New Transfer Students.
• In the Virtua Fighter cartoon Jackie wore blue while both Pai and his baby sister Sarah usually had pink on them.
  • Even applies with Jackie and Akira as Akira typically wore red.
  • Sarah occasionally wore blue giving her the blue role to her non family members of the group.
• In the Dragon Ball Tournament of Power Android 17 wore blue jeans while Android 18 had a good amount of redish/pink coloring on her.
• Oshi no Ko has the Half-Identical Twins Aquamarine "Aqua" and Ruby Hoshino. Even their names say it!
  • Aqua and his potential Love Interest Kana Arima also play it straight, since Kana has dark pink/reddish pink hair and eyes plus wears a blue uniform with a fuchsia bow. Averted with his other Love Interest Akane Kurokawa, who follows the True-Blue Femininity deals instead.
• Darling in the FRANXX has Zero-Two (pink-haired Action Girl weith red horns and clad in a red Latex Space Suit) and Hiro (blue-haired Protagonist who wears a black-blue space suit and later develops a blue tumor and blue horns as part of his "saurification"...)

Board Games

• The Game of Life board game is an example of this. Boy pegs are blue, girl pegs are pink.

Comic Books

• The mutant twins Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch often wear blue and red costumes respectively, although Quicksilver's first costume was green.

Fan Fiction

• Inverted to a degree by Ryan Lee and Susan Chan in Futari wa Pretty Cure Dragon; the manly martial artist Ryan wears pink, and the Ojou and Lady of War Susan wears blue.

Film

• Sharkboy and Lavagirl.

Literature

• In one of the Xanth novels, the male and female main characters had switched bodies due to a magic spell gone wrong. When they manage to acquire clothes from a clothes tree, they take colors according to their mental gender, much to the confusion of their semi-sentient horse.
• Stephen King's Dark Tower series features the sentient monorail Blaine and his 'sister', Patricia. They feature the reversed color scheme: Patricia is blue, and Blaine is pink.

Live-Action TV

• Made fun of in an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, where Ashley asks how they could tell from the sonogram if Vivian's baby was a boy or a girl.

Hilary: Oh, Ashley, you are so naive. If it's a boy, it's blue!

• LazyTown's two main characters fit this trope. Stephanie wears pink and Sportacus wears blue.
• The Game Show Scrabble did this with its contestants' nametags.
• Pink Rangers are always female. Blue Rangers are often male, but have been female a number of times. Out of the most common suit colors (Red, Blue, Yellow, Pink, Green, Black, and White), Green and Black (usually seen as interchangeable) are the only all-male colors (except in Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, see below).
  • Also, while the Pink Ranger is usually The Chick, more recent seasons have been subverting this (starting with Mirai Sentai Timeranger and Power Rangers Time Force, where Pink is the real team leader even if Red gets the official recognition). The most common inversion comes on teams with two girls, where Pink will be the level-headed Cool Big Sis while Yellow will be The Ditz.
  • Interestingly, this also extends to Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger, where the Rangers have the power to assume the forms of their predecessors (complete with Distaff Counterpart costumes where necessary). Thus far, Pink Ranger Ahim is the only person to use any Pink Ranger Keys, while every other color has been used by people of both genders (except, again, for Green).
    • This is averted in the Gokaiger Vs. Gavan movie, where the whole team change into pink Sentai warriors.
    • This finally in Samurai was shown with red instead of pink as the "true" red ranger was female while the blue ranger was male.

• In Mighty Morphin when Kimberly's mother fell in love with an artist Kimberly herself and her mother both wore pink while said artist wore blue.
• Inverted with Rita Repulsa and Lord Zedd as her design incorporates some blue and his design is predominantly red.

Music

• The song You're a Pink Toothbrush applies this trope to romance between inanimate objects.
• Referenced in the first stanza of Joe Jackson's song "Real Men".
• This video.
• The more well-known Vocaloid characters are differentiated by hair and/or outfit color; true to the trope, pink-haired Luka is a girl and blue-haired Kaito is a boy. Inverted with Miku, who has light blue hair and is a girl.

New Media

• Taken to the logical extreme in JeongMee Yoon's series of pictures.
• Take a close look at the icons used by Snopes sometime. For the categories involving urban legends centered on certain people, the males get an icon of a blue-haired boy while the females get an icon of a pink-haired girl.
• This youtube video combines this concept with Girls Have Cooties for a cute little short.
• The website Girls Ask Guys uses this scheme to differentiate between male and female users, by highlighting their username, their 'rank,' and, if asking the question, their rating stars with the respective colour. If the user has not yet chosen an avatar, they sport a silhouette of their gender with the corresponding shade, too.

Newspaper Comics

The Pink Panther is a girl. If he was a boy he'd be the Blue Panther.

Toys

• Little Twin Stars is a classic example: just look at their hair.
• Inverted in Bionicle. The females still retain the "pink" personality, but the majority of the female main characters are blue. And while there are no pink characters, the red ones are all male.
• Fisher-Price Little People toys and playsets usually avert this, with characters wearing whatever they realistically would. However, Fisher-Price has started making all-pink sets. What makes this stupid is that they are simply recoloring old molds, usually ones with normal colors. So now girls can buy a pink (instead of yellow) bus or dump truck, and a pink (instead of white and blue) plane. And a pink house, which is identical to the normal house in mold, except pink. It's borderline condescending and, since the main difference between the two molds is one is entirely pink, completely insulting.

Video Games

• Bubble Bobble: One of the original two is the underdog Bob, who is a male human-turned-blue bubble dragon. His apparent partner in Bubble Symphony (in cutscenes, she is always beside Bob) is Coro, a female human-turned-magenta bubble dragon and one of the new group of two. Extended with green for Bub (a boy) and orange for Kulu (a girl), who are also beside each other in cutscenes.
  • Bubble Bobble Part 2: In the NES version's intro, the protagonist who soon gets cursed wears (light greenish) blue, and the soon to be Distressed Damsel wears pink with a matching color bow.
• Amy Rose and Sonic the Hedgehog of the eponymous series. Since the Dreamcast era, Amy has been wearing all red to go with her pink fur. Sonic, on the other hand...
  • This does bring up some confusion at one point, as the animal inside the rather masculine E-102 is a pink bird.
• NiGHTS into Dreams..., another SEGA franchise from Sonic Team, has Claris (pink hair and eyes) and Elliot (blue hair and eyes), both examples of Curtains Match the Window as well.
  • And then Ni GHTS itself is mostly purple and nobody can tell which gender it is.
• The Ice Climbers, Nana and Popo, play this trope straight. Popo wears a blue parka while Nana wears a pink/red one.
• Lolo and Lala also play this trope straight. Lalala even wears a bow.
• In Final Fantasy IV the After Years, Different As Night and Day twins Palom and Porom wear blue and pink, respectively. Porom even has pink hair, despite Palom and her younger self both having brown hair.
  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance has Marche (the Blue Boy) and Ritz (the Pink Girl).
  • In IX Eiko has a good amount of pink on her while both Vivi and Zidane have blue.
• Persona 3 Portable has different color-coded menu screens depending on the gender the player selects for their protagonist — naturally, pink for the girl and blue for the guy.
  • The first two party members to join the MC follow this theme as well; Yukari is almost never seen without wearing something pink, and Junpei, apart from his blue shirt, never takes off his blue hat.
• Maria Luna of Backyard Sports loves the color pink and plays better when she wears it. In an aversion, Jocinda Smith loves blue.
• Fire Emblem:
  • In Sacred Stones, the under-leveled recruit Amelia wears pink in her portrait, yet wears blue in battle scenes. At least, until she achieves higher ranks, in which case she wears pink armor even as a general.
  • In Three Houses, Edelgard wears either red and black or red, whereas Dimitri wears blue or black and blue. Claude, in the mean time, prefers either black and yellow or beige.
• The exclusive robots of the protagonists of Super Robot Wars Advance. Axel Almer gets the blue Soulgain, whereas Lamia Loveless gets the pink Angelg.
• Inversion: Male members of the Nidoran family are pink and purple. Female members are blue.
  • The shiny versions, however, play the trope straight (with the exception of Nidoqueen, whose shiny version is predominantly green).
  • Latias and Latios (twin dragons and legendary Pokemon) are red/female and blue/male, respectively.
  • Starting from the third generation onward, the font color on certain game menus (like the save screen) will be either blue or red/pink depending on whether the player character is male or female, respectively. In the fourth-generation games, the Poketch and the PokeGear are similarly color-coded.
    • Also, the text of NPCs in FireRed and LeafGreen will change color depending on their gender - red for girls, blue for boys, black for Pokemon and computers.
  • Pokémon Black and White has the Water/Ghost jellyfish Jellicent. Males are blue with a large mustache, while females are pink, lack a mustache, and have lipstick and eyelashes.
  • Ethan in Pokémon Gold and Silver has a blue PokéGear while Kris in Crystal has a pink PokéGear and a pink backpack.
    • This is inverted in game, where the game gives Ethan a red color scheme and Kris a blue one, though with a save glitch this could be inverted thus played straight with a blue Ethan and a red Kris.
• Inverted in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin: Jonathan's outfit is red, while his menu items are red or pink. Charlotte's outfit (including underwear!) are blue, as are her menu items.
• Inverted in Tales of Symphonia: Colette, chosen of Sylverant, wears a blue and white robe. Zelos, the chosen of Tethe'alla, wears pink.
• Tales of Phantasia has pink-haired Arche and her blue-haired boyfriend Chester.
• Subverted in Panel De Pon; Sharbet and Elias both have primarily blue color schemes and are both female, like the rest of the fairies.
• Jacques (the Blue Boy) and Aila (the Pink Girl) from Suikoden III.
• Princess Zelda, in Ocarina of Time, predominantly wears pink (like many of her ancestors and descendants). When disguised as the male-looking Sheik, however, she wears blue.
  • Notably averted in some of the games, however. Zelda wears blue and white in A Link to The Past, and in Twilight Princess, she wears purple and white.
  • Played 100% straight in Smash Ultimate, Zelda wears a notable amount of pink while the Link in this version is from Breath of the Wild, who wears blue instead of his usual green attire. Though this is notably averted in Breath of the Wild Link's own game as the Zelda there wears blue that matches his champion tunic.
  • In terms of royalty in Melee Marth is the blue prince while Zelda is the pink princess. Also happens in Ultimate.
  • In the cartoon Link is shown wearing blue sleepwear while Zelda was wearing a red equivalent. Her default outfit also has some pink with her shorts being the most notable.
• Professor Layton's young companions fit the trope. His apprentice, Luke, wears a blue hat and blue sweater, while his adopted daughter Flora wears a pink hair ribbon and either a white and pink (Curious Village) or pink and brown (the other games) dress.
• This is the colour scheme most often given to Akari and Ricky in 1080 and Wave Race, those two being implied to be a couple.
• In Golden Sun, all three pairs of villains (with the possible exception of Agatio, who looks more green than blue) are dressed like this. There's also Jenna and Piers from the second game.
• In Resident Evil 2, the main playable characters are also color coded in this way, with Leon in a blue uniform and Claire in a pink 'biker' outfit.
  • Resident Evil 4 sees Leon wear blue while both Ada and Ashley have red.
  • The 2 remake changes Claire to have red instead of pink.
• In Twinbee, the blue Twinbee and the pink Winbee (which also has a heart-shaped cockpit) are piloted respectively by Light and his girl cousin Pastel, who wear the same colors as on their ships.
• Twin Cobra II: Player 1's helicopter is blue and is piloted by a male, Player 2's helicopter is red and is piloted by a female.
• Although he is associated with the color red because of his hat and shirt, Mario's outfit also includes blue overalls, and his love interest, Princess Peach, wears pink.
  • Played more straight in Smash when it comes to royalty as Marth is a blue prince to Peach's pink.
  • Also happens when Sheik is with Peach though they are both the same gender.
• Inverted in Street Fighter as although Ibuki's default ninja outfit is brown her more casual clothes tend to be blue including her V default while Guy is associated with the color red.
  • As Ibuki often has pink versions of her outfits (even one for her default) and even some newer alternates such as her SFXT alternate have pink as a default, she could also be considered a pink girl for Capcom's other ninja Strider Hiryu who wears blue, both even Shout-Out each other through outfits.
    • It was played the most straight in her own comic as when she was leaving the Glade of Ninjas Ibuki wore an outfit that included a pink shirt under a vest and Yuta has blue as part of his ninja outfit.
  • Poison through herself, she wears blue clothes and a blue hat while having pink hair pink hit effects. Now when you consider her gender history...
• In the The Simpsons (video game) made by Konami Bart wears a blue shirt and blue shorts while Lisa wears a red dress. Homer also has blue jeans while his daughter wears the aforementioned red dress.
  • Inverted with Marge who has blue hair and the fat thugs who wear pink shirts.
• In Darkstalkers Morrigan wears pink pants and accessories while Dimitri has a blue outfit.
• In Dead or Alive Hayate wears blue often while Kasumi is the most pink girl in the cast.
  • The half sisters Helena and Kokoro with Helena wearing Blue often and Kokoro pink. It is notable Helena is portrayed as independent often being the organizer or even winning one tournament herself not set up by her Kokoro is mostly a passive side character who only once became assertive when she found out the secret her mother and older half sister have been keeping away from her since she was born.
• Cygnus Knight job instructors in Maple Story Hawkeye wears blue while Oz wears red.
  • The Nova heroes also qualify with Kaiser having blue hair and Angelic Buster having pink hair alongside pink accessories and attacks.
  • Aside from aesthetic differences that cover the female torso while being lower on males the towels for males are blue and pink for females.
  • The "naked" look also aside from what it covers is blue for boys and pink for girls.
• Inverted with the Playstation 2 version of Rumble Roses as Mistress's clown slave had red details in his makeup/lips while her student Becky wore blue (changed to orange in the sequel).
• Typhoon Gal has Dumplin (P1) who has blue hair and is represented by blue text and Yuki (P2) who wears a pink karate outfit, pink hair band and is represented by pink text. Many male enemies wear blue.
• The second player character, Ryu (not that one), in Little Ninja brothers wears blue while Princess Lelia is fully pink when she is a bird and has a good amount of pink including hair when she is a human. The evil Queen also has a bit of pink on her. The player 1 character Jack (he has nothing to do with burgers) is red.
• Kevin in Resident Evil Outbreak wears blue as his default while Alyssa does red.
• Jian in Lunar Dragon Song has blue hair and blue pants while Lucia has pink hair and pink themed outfit. Later when Lucia is kidnapped (for the rest of the game mind you) her Suspiciously Similar Substitute who arrives almost immediately after Lucia is kidnapped, Flora, has red and pink in her design.
• In Where in Time Is Carmen Sandiego? the PC game the "Good Guide" Rock Solid wears blue bottoms while "Time Thief" Jacqueline Hyde wears predominantly pink. Carmen herself mostly wears red.
• Inverted in a weird way in Uninvited. The skull that takes control of the player is red but the "Skarlet O' Hara" skeleton has some blue on her design. The latter also has some pleasant unique music associated with her, a trait shared with the other female the players sister (since music only plays on the versions with the sister rather than younger brother). Don't trust the music in this case.
• An artwork of Clash at Demonhead has this 100%.
• Vitamin Connection has the blue Vita Boy and the pink Mina Girl.
• In The Legend of Ghost Lion for the NES, Maria (the playable character) wears mostly pink and most male NPC's usually wear blue. Even other female NPC tend to be brighter colored than males and not far off Pink.
• In Time Gal, the Action Girl and Player Character Reika Kirishima (Time Gal herself) wears predominantly red that leans on pink in some lighting, while the main villain Luda has some dark blue in his clothing.
• Root Film has Rintaro Yagumo wearing blue pants while Riho wears varying shades of pink.
• Lined up perfectly in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate where the selected Link representative is the Breath of the Wild incarnation thus wears blue and the selected Zelda representative represents the A Link To The Past and A Link Between Worlds Zelda thus she wears pink. Of course could apply to other male female pairings that already exist such as Mario who wears blue and Peach who wears all pink and all ladies such as Palutena tend to have pink alternatives while males tend to have blue already such as Pit or blue alternatives.
• The titular heroine of the Shantae series wears predominantly red and her Arch Nemesis Risky Boots also has red on her design while Shantae's friend who is also romantically interested in Risky Bolo has a lot of blue. Also played straight and reversed with Sky and her pet bird Wrench as both she and he have light blue and pink as part of their design.

Visual Art

• Two paintings — Pinkie by Thomas Lawrence and The Blue Boy by Thomas Gainsborough — have long been grouped together. The pink girl and blue boy are displayed directly across the room from each other at the Huntington Museum in Southern California.

Webcomics

• Used in VG Cats with Leo (who wears blue and has grey fur) and Aeris (who wears mainly purple-pink clothes and has pink fur).
• Commented on by Millie in Ozy and Millie; one about her needing to 'staple pink frilly stuff' to herself to remind Stephan that she's a girl, and another where she thinks pink is a bit of a girly colour for herself. The pink here is her own skin after being hit with the defoliation Running Gag that Simpson had set up. As far as fur colour is concerned, Ozy is white-grey (Arctic fox), while Millie is red-orange (red fox). Make of that what you will.

• Inverted in Fan Dan Go where a male character, Zephyr, has candyfloss pink hair, while his female compatriot, Sarin, has sky blue hair.

• The two authors of Cinnamon Bunzuh distinguish their text from one another by having one in pink and the other in blue.

Western Animation

• From the Adventure Time episode "The Silent King", regarding a blue mirror, "And it's painted baby blue, boy style!"
  • In terms of the show, Finn is a Blue Boy to the Pink Girl Bubblegum.
    • Also, Ice King and Princess Bubblegum.
  • Inverted in "Adventure Time with Fiona and Cake", however.
• The Nostalgia Chick's quote atop the page was used in her analysis of the original Transformers cartoon, referring to both Arcee and Elita One. Elita One was the Distaff Counterpart of Optimus Prime, and so (leader/girl) pink to his (leader) red and (boy) blue coloring. Elita One's Amazon Brigade otherwise had nothing with the trope, her soldiers appearing in all kinds of colours. Arcee, being the one girl starting the third season, was pink, and so was her (intended) love interest Hot Rod in a magenta shade ("aging" to red when he became Rodimus Prime). From there, the trope gets interesting in that pink is a noticeable colour choice among the Autobot females, but also among the Decepticon males (though not much in the cartoon because that ended long before the toyline did). Hun-Grrr, Misfire, the Seacons, Skullcruncher, Spinister, Fangry, Gaihawk, Barricade, Roller Force, and Horri-Bull, among others, all sport a good level of pink. Blue is more equally divided between the factions.
• In The Fairly Odd Parents, Timmy Turner's clothes are all pink because his parents were expecting a girl.
  • In-universe. Butch Hartman had intended for them (or at least his hat) to be blue, but when his blue marker ran out before he could finish, he had to use a pink one instead.
• In the episode of Pocoyo where he meets an alien, when the alien's parents turn up, the Narrator addresses the pink alien as the "Mummy Alien". The Alien then gives an angry look at the screen and the Narrator corrects himself, realizing it's the "Daddy Alien".
• Blue's Clues played it differently - Blue is blue and is female, but Magenta, who is pink, is also female.
• In Tiny Toon Adventures, Buster is a blue bunny, and Babs is a pink one, and sometimes they'll even break out matching props.
• Yin and Yang from Yin Yang Yo are a pink bunny and a blue bunny respectively as well.
• Flavio and Marita the hippos from Animaniacs are blue and pinkish purple respectively.
• Because Disney dates to the early decades of the 20th century, the idea that blue represented calm, soothing, feminine attributes was still popular (with red/pink as the guy hero color). Due to this, many of Disney's early female characters from the first golden age are swathed in blue; Pink Girl, Blue Boy would emerge slowly but surely much later on.
  • Minnie Mouse has been seen in many colors, but for most of her early color appearances, she was never seen in pink (pink colorations of old cartoons not counting). Merchandise and the comics would paint her whatever the heck they wanted; but blue was a color that she appeared in frequently. Best of all, the blue contrasted with Mickey's standard guy-hero red. The all-pink wouldn't emerge until the late Pluto cartoons, and the ever-famous red dress with white polka dots wouldn't come in until Disneyland was opened. In modern animated appearances, Minnie bounces back and forth the most between wearing soft blue to contrast Mickey, or bright red to match him. That doesn't stop marketing from dousing her home, her wardrobe, and her merchandise pink, of course.
  • The artists debated long and hard on what color Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs should be dressed in, even testing out the (at the time) unusual idea to dress her in all pink, but in the end, they went with the easy-on-the-eyes blue bodice. Her prince, of course, brought the red cape.
  • The Blue Fairy from Pinocchio (and the only chick in the film, no less. Cleo doesn't count). This might be because in the original tale her name was the Fairy with Turquoise Hair. The blue becomes more noticeable, though, when contrasted with Pinocchio's red lederhosen (heeey, that's not Italian!).
  • Cinderella is debatable. Her dress is silver in the movie but blue in all follow-up merchandise in the Disney Princess line. The two dresses she wore as a child and her nightgown are blue.
    • I will never know where the rhyme Cinderella dressed in yella' comes from...she never wore yellow!
      • I'm pretty sure that predates the Disney movie.
  • Alice from Alice in Wonderland wears a blue dress, as in the original illustrations from the book.
  • Wendy from Peter Pan wore a blue nightdress, while her younger brother Michael wore pink pajamas.
  • In Lady and the Tramp, Lady has a blue collar, and Tramp gains a red collar at the end of the movie. Meanwhile, the baby in the movie is a boy, but his entire room and pajamas are pink.
  • Another dog example in One Hundred and One Dalmatians lies with Pongo, who sports a red collar, and Perdita who sports a blue one. It's not clear whether this extended to the puppies or not, since we only know the name and gender of three: Lucky, Rolly, and Patch, all males and all in red. In the animated series, there's definitely not a theme; Rolly and at least one other male (either Wizzer or Dipstick) had blue collars.
    • Tie-ins for this movie are notorious for getting this messed up. Often, Pongo and Perdita's collars will be switched, or some of them will be pink instead of red... actually, on the cover of the first VHS release, several of the puppies had magenta, purple, and even yellow collars.
  • The trend is shattered, though, in the late 1960s, where one would find girls popping up more frequently in purples and pinks (Shanti, Maid Marian, Bianca, Eilonwy, Megara, Esmeralda), girls wearing whatever the movie would require (Pocahontas in tan...but with a blue necklace), and then finally, girls who took both blue and pink/red in stride. Examples of pink-and-blue sharing being:
    • Aurora is a rare example from 1959. The three good fairies weren't sure how to color code Aurora, as blue was the traditional feminine color and pink was the emerging feminine color. Note how throughout most of the movie Aurora is wearing blue, but in the Disney Princess line she is always in pink. Hmmmmmm. Prince Philip brings a red cape and hat to the party. Disney Princess-gear Aurora always wears pink because Cinderella always wears blue (Belle wears her yellow ballgown, and Snow White is a mixture of red, blue, and yellow). Aurora was changed over to the pink dress to get guests to stop mixing her up with Cinderella. Whether or not this problem truly arose in the Disney parks is not certain (of course, since so few guests seem to know who Aurora even is...)
  • Ariel had not just a blue dress, but a pink one as well. A portion of the fandom has since complained about the pink dress clashing with her aggressively red hair...but one must remember that it was the late 1980s (the tiles on the floor in that scene are black-and-white checkerboard. Natch). Notably, she wears a turquoise dress at the theme parks.
  • Belle is a more modern version of strictly blue; she wears blue throughout most of the movie, and it's what set her apart from the autumn-themed villagers. She also has a fancier pink dress which appears briefly once she and the Beast begin to get along. However, thanks to the Disney Princess line, it's a gold ball gown that she's primarily associated with, instead of her blue peasant garb. When Belle wears blue, the Beast wears a red cape. When she wears gold, the Beast is the boy in blue. Note that Gaston wears red.
    • There's a reason Belle wears that blue dress. If you pay attention, you'll notice that out of all the characters in that movie, only two wear blue.
  • Jasmine from Aladdin is another modern example of strictly-blue; but this might have been incidental, because throughout the whole movie Blue was Good and Red was Evil. Her Go-Go Enslavement outfit is red. Notably, Aladdin himself is associated with the color purple because he has both good and bad qualities. He's a thief but steals to survive, and shares with those even less fortunate than he.
  • Mulan's primary color is, believe it or not, green, that being the color of both her armor and the dress she wears at the beginning of the film. She has two outfits of different colors: the pink-with-blue-trim fancy gown she's forced to wear for her disastrous meeting with the Matchmaker, and a blue-with-red-trim dress she wears at the end of the film, when she defeats the Huns and proves herself. Shang also brought out a red cape...but this might've been due to the story's cultural setting.
  • Olivia, Jenny, Kida, and Captain Amelia carry on the grand tradition of strictly-blue-girls. Dr. Doppler, who Amelia hooks up with, is even kind enough to wear a red jacket next to her blue one. Aww.
  • In Fantasia 2000, Donald wears a red robe and Daisy wears a blue one.
  • Tiana from the The Princess and the Frog has earth-toned street clothes, but her main princess costume is blue. Her two wedding dresses are green, for obvious motif reasons.
  • Inverted in Cars, where hero Lightning McQueen is a red race car, while his love interest Sally is a blue Porsche 911 Carrera. Also inverted with two of the background race cars where the pink race car sponsoring Tank Coat is actually male, and the blue race car sponsoring Rev N Go is actually female.
    • Played straight with Finn McMissile and Holly Shiftwell from the sequel, however, as with the kissing couple seen on the bridge in Paris.
  • In the Pixar animated film A Bugs Life, all the female ants are pink, while all the male ants are blue.
  • A more recent straight example would be Tangled, where Rapunzel wears pink, lavender, and purple and Flynn wears blue.
  • Also inverted in Finding Nemo where we have Marlin, an orangey-red clownfish, and Dory, a blue regal tang.
  • Played straight in Lilo and Stitch: The Series, where Stitch is blue and Angel (#624 and his love interest) is pink.
• In Dragon Tales, the main cast of dragons (assuming you count Quetzal as supporting) is certainly this way. Ord is blue; Cassie is pink. Zack and Weezie, who are a two-headed dragon, are divided colorwise down the middle: the Zack half is green, while the Weezie half is purple.
• Parodied in Family Guy, where a talking blue car is hitting on a pink car but realizes that it's his buddy, whose owner gave him a paint job.
  • Though, at the last second of that particular Manatee Gag, it is implied that the pink car is gay/bi, at least.
  • Meg's clothes are pink and Chris wears blue.
• In Hey Arnold, Harold and Helga, who are the two main bullies of the fourth grade, are represented with blue and pink, respectively. However, Helga often calls Harold "pink boy" in reference to his ruddy skin tone.
• Dottywot and Spottywot, respectively, in the British preschool series The Wotwots.
• The first two cars to be crushed to death during the song "Worthless" from The Brave Little Toaster are actually a male blue car and a female pink car, respectively.
• Gumball and Anais, the lead character and his little sister in The Amazing World of Gumball. The color motif is inverted with their parents, Richard and Nicole.
• Regular Show: Mordecai is a blue jay and Margaret is a red-breasted robin (filling in for Pink).
• The Christmas Elves from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
• Inverted and played straight with Charlotte in Making Fiends. She's a stereotypical, over-the-top caricature of everything adorable and annoying about the archetypal American little girl, but has baby blue as her color and motif. Still, she seems to love pink as much as expected, as almost all of her possessions are pink.
• Molly and Gil from Bubble Guppies. Bonus points for being not only the two characters featured most prominently, but also an extremely played with Toy Ship
• Rosie from Thomas the Tank Engine is a female pink tank locomotive. This is especially noticable when she is seen with Thomas, a blue tank locomotive.
• In Gargoyles, the gargoyles' eyes will actually glow a different color depending on that gargoyle's gender: females' eyes glow red, while males' glow white. Inverted with the clones, however.
  • There's a good reason why all the females have glowing red eyes: originally, Demona was going to be the only red-eyed gargoyle, but since the show's writers did not want to make her role as the villain more obvious, they changed it so that every single female gargoyle has red eyes and not Demona.
• Princess Cadance and Shining Armor as one of the few canon couples in My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic.
• In Jelly Jamm, Rita and Mina fit the "pink girly girl, blue tomboy" subtrope. Averted with the male characters, however, as two are purple and one is red.
• Downplayed in Voltron: Legendary Defender: Allura's armor has pink tones while her love interest Lance's has blue ones... but by the time this happens she pilots the Blue Lion and he's in the Red Lion. Plus she wears blue dresses when not fighting.
• Todd and Maurecia from Wayside : Todd wears a short-sleeved blue shirt. while Maurecia wears a long-sleeved reddish-violet shirt, as well as her pink roller skates and her pink helmet.
• In Jackie Chan Adventures Jackie himself wears a blue top most of the time while his niece Jade wears red.
• Charlotte's Web: In the movie Fern often wore pink and Henry often wore blue, matched up perfectly during the fair. In the video game Fern often has pink and Lurvy often has blue.

Real Life

• Also in Real Life (and well before most other Real Life cited examples of this) comes the following from historian Tamara Plakins Thornton in a book on the history of handwriting instruction. Because eighteenth- and nineteenth-century etiquette recommended teaching different handwriting styles to people of different genders and social ranks (so that one could tell at a glance whether a letter came from a woman, from a member of the lower classes, or from someone actually important), at least one author of handwriting textbooks for the American upper/midle classes color-coded the books by gender. "In 1845[,] writing master James French issued two copybooks, a Gentlemen's Writing Book, bound in blue, and a Ladies ' Writing Book, bound in pink. In the former, French's male students practiced their mercantile running hand [a script style used by 18th- and 19th-century American and English businessmen] ... while their female counterparts rehearsed the ladies' epistolary [a more delicate and ornamented writing style, taught to women and girls of the era instead of the styles considered proper for males] ... " Source: Handwriting in America: A Cultural History by historian Tamara Plakins Thornton, 1998, p. 43. This early American example of Pink Girl, Blue Boy (apparently the sole pre-20th-century example) makes the trope Older Than Television.
• In the Netherlands, it's tradition for parents and older siblings to serve rusk topped with 'muisjes', little sugar-covered aniseed sprinkles, to visitors, colleagues, and classmates to celebrate a newborn. While initially only available in a pink/white mix, a blue/white mix became available in the early 90s and is now generally used when a boy is born. Since 1938, an orange/white mix has been created for a short period after a royal birth, and with the 'birth' of the new pope in 2005, some catholic institutions handed out rusks topped with yellow/white muisjes, though these were not widely sold in supermarkets, if at all.
• In the 1920s, pink was deemed more appropriate for boys due to its close associations with red. Blue was assigned to girls since it was more “delicate and dainty” and had close ties to the imagery of the Virgin Mary. This practice continued until the 1940s, when the gender colors were reversed and became the stereotypes that we are still familiar with today.
• You can buy pink stocks and grips for a number of guns, including the AR-15 & AK-47.
• Many restroom signs are pink for women and blue for men. This may even go as far as the restroom's wall color, and some bathrooms take it even further. Pink and blue toilets for their respective bathrooms, pink or blue sinks, pink or blue dryers/paper towel dispensers (although, thankfully, the paper inside is still white or brown), and yes, even pink or blue liquid soap.
• The cere (the small patch of skin above the beak) of a male parakeet is blue. That of the female is brown.
• The male Eclectus parrot is green, while the female is red.
