Pocoyo (2005-2009) is a Spanish children's show, narrated by José María del Río. (Stephen Fry or Adal Romero, depending on the version you watch). Tells the adventures of a young boy named Pocoyo, the duck Pato, the elephant Elly, and more. Notable for its minimalist style- the characters lack any textures and all of the action takes place on a white background, and there is no backstory.
Also notable for being absolutely, unbearably adorable.
This show contains examples of:[]
- Abnormal Limb Rotation Range: During certian episodes like "Nina," Pato the duck can rotate his beak to absurd angles, such as to the side of his head or even facing the wrong direction!
- Accessory-Wearing Cartoon Animal: Pato wears a green hat.
- Acrofatic: While she can be fat, Elly the elephant has epic dancing skills, and is shown in one episode doing good martial arts moves.
- A Dog Named "Dog": The duck character is called "Pato," which comes from one of two Spanish translations of "duck" (as in the bird), the other being "ánade."
- Aerith and Bob: We have Pocoyo and Pato (as long as you didn't know that his name is duck in Spanish) then names like Elly and Fred.
- Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Elly the elephant is a pink elephant.
- Animated Series
- Baleful Polymorph: Roberto undergoes a few when he gets roughed up in Hack Attack, becoming a toaster after he gets struck by the ball and an out-of-control dancer after another accident, although Nina manages to set things right. Inverted when he transforms into a vacuum cleaner.
- Batman Can Breathe in Space: Pocoyo and his companions have no trouble going to space without anything to sustain their oxygen supply. However, in "The Bee," the titular character wears a space helmet to follow them in space.
- Big Brother Instinct: Invoked while he is looking for after the Baby Bird in the episode Baby Bird Sitting as he isn't really the titular character's brother (being a human or at least this show's equivalent while the latter is a bird), but Pocoyo treats the bird as his sibling.
- Big No: Pocoyo gives one after breaking Ellie's favorite doll. Dramatic bird's eye zoom out and all.
- Bilingual Bonus: Pato means "duck" in Spanish. Nina is derived from "niña," which means "girl."
- Black Bead Eyes: Pocoyo has black beads for eyes which sometimes morph into different shapes such as a comma-esque shape to show that his eyes are not looking straight ahead or curved lines to show them closed. Roberto is a visual inversion, with his eyes appearing as lime-green dots on a black screen-like face.
- Body Horror: Since when can ducks rotate their beaks and eyes separately? (Downplayed as it is often for comedy.) Then there is how Pato had detached one of his eyes in Pocoyo and the League of Extraordinary Superfriends!
- Breaking the Fourth Wall: The episode Hot Shot! closes with this when Ellie kicks a soccer ball into the camera, breaking the screen.
- Break the Cutie: Cheerful Child he may be, but Pocoyo does have moments of depression. In "Super Pocoyo," Pocoyo angers Loula the dog, Elly the elephant, and the Sleepy Bird with his misguided superhero antics, and this leads him to a Heroic Blue Screen of Death. Pocoyo recovers when Pato cannot remove his hat, allowing the boy to make a real rescue. Another episode, "A Little Something Between Friends," has Pocoyo and Pato get into a feud, and Pocoyo is reduced to tears upon seeing himself hang out with his duck friend in a picture.
- Cheerful Child: The titular character is quite cheerful. However, he has his depressed moments sometimes.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Fred the octopus, oh God, Fred the octopus.
- Edutainment Show: You'd be surprised, but beyond the cute dancing and the adorableness of the show, there are actually morals throughout the show.
- Eye Scream: Pato detaches one of his eyes during Pocoyo and the League of Extraordinary Superfriends... and it's capable of moving on its own!
- Friend to Bugs: Nina can communicate with any insect.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: Pato is easily angered.
- Heavy Sleeper: Sleepy Bird.
- Hey, It's That Voice!: It appears that Pocoyo's French voice actress is Leela.
- Stephen Fry is the narrator for the English version.
- Incredible Shrinking Man: During her debut episode, Nina is shown tiny. It is implied that she ended up that way before the episode started, as she grows to around Pocoyo's size when he and Pato find her.
- Limited Wardrobe: Except with Elly. When she dances, she puts on a leotard and tutu.
- Loads and Loads of Characters: By virtue of there not being Characters Of The Day. If a character makes an appearance in one episode, he will reappear again, no exceptions.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite being a nice person normally, Pocoyo can get angry or be rude towards his friends in some episodes.
- Made of Iron: Pocoyo is able to survive being dropped onto his skull. Things would get ugly for a real 10-year-old who suffered that.
- Meaningful Name: See Bilingual Bonus above.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Pocoyo ends up regretting his feud with Pato upon seeing a picture where he is hanging out with the latter in "A Little Something Between Friends."
- No Antagonist
- No Fourth Wall: The narrator, Stephen Fry, José María del Río, or Adal Romero, depending on the version (English, Castilian Spanish, and Latin American Spanish, respectively) asks the viewer to various things from pepping up Pocoyo when he's feeling sad, to waking up Sleepy Bird.
- Not Allowed to Grow Up: Pocoyo's birthday is on October 14th, but when his "birthday" rolls around, he's still four!
- Nice Hat: Pocoyo and Pato both have one.
- No Mouth: Pato the duck downplays this. His beak is there, but never separates. When he eats a piece of toast, he just appears to absorb it where his beak should separate. Ellie plays this straight, however. When she talks, she appears to use her trunk, which should be a nose for a real elephant.
- Non-Human Sidekick: The entire cast. Pocoyo is the only human.
- Non Interactivity
- Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Ellie and Pocoyo respectively. Thanks to simplistic character design and a lack of Tertiary Sexual Characteristics its really the only way to determine their genders first glance.
- Platonic Life Partners: Nina is this with Pocoyo.
- Robot Buddy: Nina is often accompanied by a small robot whom she calls "Roberto."
- Running Gag: Pocoyo and his friends dance at the every end of practically every episode.
- Sudden Anatomy: Inverted. Pato loses his beak when Nina darts between his flowers and reveals her face during the episode of her debut. It comes back a second later.
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Pocoyo wears blue, Elly's pink...
- The Unintelligible: Ellie speaks in trumpet noises, Pato speaks with quacks, and Octopus speaks in random gibberish, and Roberto has a similar "voice" to R2-D2 during his "talking" segments. Thankfully, the narrator knows what they're saying.
- Although it must be said that as ducks go, Pato's got just about the most expressive face since Daffy.
- Vocal Dissonance: When Nina drops one of the three chocolate eggs that she stole because she thought there were chicks inside them in Nina's Easter Day, Nina's voice drops abnormally low in pitch.
- Wingding Eyes: Hack Attack sees Roberto get the crossed eyes and spiral eyes every time something bad happens to him.
- Where the Hell Is Springfield??: All we know is that Pocoyo's World consists of a blank white space with random trees, houses, and other stuff. In some episodes, you go underwater and in space!
