Pokemon Generations Giratina Rising

The Abyss staring back at you is one thing...

When we said that Pokemon Generations is Darker and Edgier, it should be expected that this trope would come up in play sooner or later, especially since the original games and more lighthearted anime already have tons to begin with...

Now just unwrap the Old Gateau, take a comfy seat, and prepare for our nightmarish ride through the Pokemon world like never before.

  • In Episode 6, we finally see the original incarnations of Entei, Raikou and Suicune, even if just the silhouettes. The horrifying part? They're trapped inside the burning tower, dying in the process... Resulting in the scene managed to play Nothing Is Scarier and Gory Discretion Shot at the same time.
  • Courtney's vision in Episode 7. First, we see Primal Groudon awakening in all of its glory, which then proceeds to blast off the surrounding lands with Solarbeam. Then it turns its sight on Maxie and his crew...
  • Courtney herself. From her unnatural tendencies, cheerfully psychotic behaviors, and the way she said that she wanted to "analyze" Brendan, something's definitely not right with her. And then there's her grin near the end of the episode...
  • Primal Groudon's Desolate Land. While it's implied to be not fully activated yet, it does enable Groudon to shoot two Solar Beams in quick succession. Now imagine it running rampart in Hoenn, unable to be controlled.
  • Primal Kyogre's awakening in Episode 8. The world is instantly plunged into an intense rainstorm, hurricane rages everywhere, and maelstroms rising from the ocean, while Primal Kyogre levitates amidst the chaos.
  • The ending of Episode 8 has an implication that Archie and Shelly are both killed off by Primal Kyogre, who couldn't be controlled.
  • When Archie tried to command Primal Kyogre, it stares back fiercely at the Aqua Leader with its pupils dilated in anger. It's so terrifying that it becomes the page's image in The Other Tropes Wiki.
  • While a relatively minor one, Deoxys's transformation sequence in Episode 9 has some amount of Body Horror in it. Although it's to be expected, considering what that creature is.
  • Deoxys casually healing the injuries it has. Said injury includes its middle section being ripped open by Rayquaza's attack.
  • One from Episode 10, the dinner scene. So Cheryl and Chansey were treated to a very fine dinner in the Old Chateau, not realizing that they were eating air, the food they have being illusions. The way the scene is handled, showing the audience the truth while Cheryl and her Pokemon cheerfully do their deed makes it an awful lot creepier.
  • Adding on to that, the butler's expression after Cheryl and Chansey finished their meal. Makes us wonder what he'd planned that didn't work out...
  • While it might be just an illusion created by the ghost, its transformation to a Haunter and the ensuing chaos is pretty terrifying, and is very different that the adaptations' usual way in treating Ghost Pokemon.
  • The ghost girl. The way she pulled off a Jump Scare and Nightmare Face is terrifying enough, but we never know what she might have done to Cheryl after the episode ended.
  • More of a meta example, but the appearance of Eterna Forest in this adaptation is quite reminiscent of Aokigahara, a forest in Japan famed for its very high suicide rate.
  • Episode 11. Here we have Cyrus successfully summoning and enforced his control of Dialga and Palkia using the Red Chain. The catch? The way Red Chain is portrayed in this adaptation involves it digging into the legendary pokemon's skin, inflicting more pain that it already caused. No wonder the two immediately fled after got rescued by Giratina...
  • Giratina itself. See the page image? It's the way "materialize" in real world. And right on the bat, it shoots two Shadow Balls on Dialga and Palkia, freeing them, then engulfed Cyrus in its murky mass, dragging him to the Distortion World.
  • Cyrus himself also counts. While Courtney is terrifying by her unstable behavior and creepy sing-song giggles, Cyrus is because his... Coldness. The fact that he's unflinching when a winged blob of shadowy mass engulfed him and dragged him to its eldritch world makes one wonder what he's been through. Oh, and he seems to like Giratina's world too, sporting a knowingly grin and ended the transmission by telling Saturn to not look for him.
  • In Episode 14, The Frozen World, Team Plasma's terrorist attack on Opelucid to steal the is reimagined in a much more dark way. Hell, we even see the frozen corpses of the innocent civilians killed by Ghetsis and the Kyurem Cannon! (Show me one person who could survive an ice laser of that power)
  • But it all comes to a head in the next episode, The King Returns, where Ghetsis is attempting to use Kyurem's power to rule the world by covering it in ice. If the deaths shown in Opelucid were a hint (keep in mind, the attack in Opelucid was when Kyurem WASN'T at the Giant Chasm, the source of its power) this would leave an immeasurable death toll, likely over HALF the world's populace.
  • When N shows up to stop him, the Team Plasma boss fuses his son's Reshiram and Kyurem into a grotesque monster called White Kyurem. Ghetsis then tries to have Kyurem freeze N solid. But Reshiram still resists Ghetsis's mind control and stops the attack. If Ghetsis wasn't insane before, he definitely is now, stating that both N and Pokemon are nothing but tools.
