Popee The Performer is a 2001 children's Widget Series Anime and directorial debut of Ryuji Masuda. Set in a circus in the middle of the desert, the show's 39 episodes chronicle the antics of a small cast of characters including:
- Popee, a clown... person... dressed in striped pajamas with bunny ears and a cat's tail
- Kedamono, Popee's purple wolf assistant who wears orange shorts and an ever-changing Noh mask to look like a person
- Papi, a veteran "clown" who is intent on improving Popee's performances, regardless of the consequences
- Paola, a car with an elephant's head, and Papi's preferred mode of transport
- Frog, a frog
- Alien, an extraterrestrial who has the misfortune of being drawn into several of Popee and Papi's "adventures".
Tropes used in Popee the Performer include:
- All CGI Cartoon
- Amusing Injuries: Taken Up to Eleven, as many episodes feature decapitation, deaths, and blood, all in a kids' show!
- Big Lipped Alligator Moment: 39 episodes worth.
- Camp Gay: Popee to an extent. Taken Up to Eleven with Papi.
- Chew Toy: Kedamono
- Circus of Fear
- Companion Cube / Berserk Button: God help you if you touch Papi's elephant car.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Popee's sheer batshit-insanity is matched only by Papi.
- Creepy Circus Music
- Deranged Animation
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: Everything about Papi's "milk dance" is wrong on many levels.
- Ear Worm: Seeing as the show only has four pieces of background music that are repeated to no end, they're kind of "forced earworms".
- Five-Finger Fillet: played for laughs. And using a frog.
- Ho Yay: Anything and everything Papi does.
- Kick the Dog: Or shoot it with a rocket launcher. Whatever works.
- Knife-Throwing Act
- Masochist's Meal
- Memetic Molester: The Anime-Planet.com forums tend to link Popee and Papi with various forms of rape, sodomy, and generally unpleasant things.
- Saw Your Dog, Your Friend And Yourself In Half: With a chansaw, of course.
- So Bad It's Good
- Special Effect Failure: Nary a minute goes by without awkward movement or clipping.
- Uncanny Valley: EVERYTHING
- Villainous Harlequin: Both Popee and Papi have their moments. Lots and lots of moments.
- The Voiceless: Everyone except for the frog in the last episode(although a version with a voice track does exist).
- What Do You Mean It's for Kids?
- Widget Series
- Your Mind Makes It Real
