A roguelike by Jeff Lait. It was designed for the Game Boy Advance, but has been ported to other systems as well.
Not to be confused with the 1995 film of the same name.
Tropes used in Powder include:
- Arrows on Fire: Dipping arrows in Greek fire or lava will set them on fire.
- Attack Reflector: Having the amulet of reflection or the mirror shield equipped grants this.
- Bonus Dungeon: The spaceship.
- Boom Stick: Most of the wands and staves.
- Color Coded for Your Convenience: The dragons and tridudes.
- Combo-Platter Powers: The artifacts.
- Damage Discrimination: Averted. If an enemy hits another enemy (usually indirectly), they will fight each other to the death.
- Elemental Powers: Fire, Cold, Shock, Acid, Light, and Death.
- Elemental Rock-Paper-Scissors: Played straight with the fire and ice snakes. The fire snake is weak against ice and the ice snake is weak against fire. Averted everywhere else.
- Fight in The Nude: Averted. Your character's sprite changes depending on what weapons and armour are equipped.
- Flaming Sword: Dipping a long sword in Greek fire or lava will coat it in flames.
- Flat Earth Atheist: The adventurer class. Also Spoony Bard.
- Forged by the Gods: The gods may gift you with a highly enchanted weapon or piece of armour.
- Invisible Monsters: Ghosts and invisible stalkers.
- Kill It with Fire: Ice snakes and giant frogs are vulnerable to fire.
- Kill It with Ice: Fire snakes and fire beetles are vulnerable to ice.
- Kill It with Water: Fire elementals take damage when splashed with water.
- Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me
- Nominal Importance: If an enemy has a name, it will be stronger than usual.
- Poisoned Weapons: Dipping an object in a potion of poison will poison said item. There is also a spell that does this.
- And even if you're starving, never ever eat a corpse that has just been killed by your poisoned weapon.
- Random Number God: Xom is a literal one.
- Red Herring: The Y-rune. Why? Exactly. That's why it's called the Y-rune. The name sounds awesome, it's ominous, but the player always asks himself "Why do I need this?" You don't. That's the point.
- Shapeshifter Mode Lock: The amulet of unchanging grants this.
- Super Drowning Skills: Averted
- Squishy Wizard: Wizards do not gain any hit points on leveling up.
- Taken for Granite: The petrify spell and the cockatrice do this.
- Universal Poison
- Unusable Enemy Equipment: Averted, although few enemies have equipment of their own.
- Wizard Needs Food Badly: Unlike other roguelikes, starvation is nonlethal. Being hungry means no hit point regeneration, and starving means no mana regeneration.
