  • Before making a single edit, Tropedia EXPECTS our site policy and manual of style to be followed. Failure to do so may result in deletion of contributions and blocks of users who refuse to learn to do so. Our policies can be reviewed here.
  • All images MUST now have proper attribution, those who neglect to assign at least the "fair use" licensing to an image may have it deleted. All new pages should use the preloadable templates feature on the edit page to add the appropriate basic page markup. Pages that don't do this will be subject to deletion, with or without explanation.
  • All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples. The Trope workshop specific templates can then be removed and it will be regarded as a regular trope page after being moved to the Main namespace. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.

Promare (Japanese: プロメア, Hepburn: Puromea) is a 2019 Japanese animated film co-produced by Studio Trigger and XFLAG. The film was directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi and written by Kazuki Nakashima, both of whom had worked together on Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann in 2007 and Kill la Kill in 2013, with Nakashima and Trigger credited for the original work. It features character and mecha designs by Shigeto Koyama, 3DCG animation by Sanzigen and music by Hiroyuki Sawano. Promare was released in Japanese theaters on May 24, 2019 by Toho; there are also two short prequels named Side Galo and Side Lio.

30 years ago, the Great World Blaze Calamity caused people to literally burn down to crisps, killing around half of Earth's population but also giving a group of people known as the Burnish the power to control flames. In the present, a brigade known as Burning Rescue keeps the order via hunting down the members of the Mad Burnish cult, who use their Playing with Fire skills to attack people.

The newest Burning Rescue member is the boisterous Galo Thymos, the protagonist of the story. He defeats the leader of the Mad Burnish, a young man named Lio Fotia, and brings him to the custody of the Freeze Force led by his benefactor, the Promepolis governor Kray Foresight (also the leader of the powerful Foresight Foundation). However, Lio seems to know something that could completely change the world, and as he and Galo clash and interact with one another, this and many other truths are revealed, including anything related to whatever the titular Promare is. . .

Tropes used in Promare include:

  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: Galo isn't the sharpest tool, but he IS damn good at firefighting.
  • Healing Factor: The Burnish can use their flames to heal themselves. The price is that such a technique will eventually consume and kill them.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: The Mad Burnish turn out to be this. They don't exactly want to murder humans, but to save Burnish from being experimented on by Kray's Foresight Founfation
  • Homoerotic Subtext: Galo and Lio's relationship through the movie is chock-full of this, holy crap.
  • I Owe You My Life: Galo feels this way towards Kray, who years ago saved him from the fire that killed his parents. Nope. He accidentally started said fire and, when people thought he had saved the boy, he used it to his advantage.
  • Kiss of Life: The Burnish can potentially do this, via performing CPR on someone and infusing him/her with their flames. Lio tries it on a girl named Thyma and fails, later Galo pulls it on Lio and survives
  • Playing with Fire: The main ability of the Burnish.
  • Playing with Syringes: Many Burnish are subjected to this.
  • Pyromaniac: The Burnish. It's not as clear-cut as it seems, though.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Kray, and H O W.
  • World of Ham: And HOW. It makes a lot of sense given that the creators were the ones behind Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill, no less.
