These things about Ratchet & Clank (video game) are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.
2002[]
- Anticlimax Boss: Captain Qwark goes down pretty easily. Though this was arguably the point given how the game keeps harping on about how washed up he is.
- Anvilicious: The game really wants to make sure you understand that capitalism is bad.
- Base Breaker: Ratchet has evolved into this with time. Originally his portrayal in the game was hated but after the Lighter and Softer approach in the 2016 movie and game, some fans appreciated his pricklier beginnings, opining that it made him more real a character.
- Harsher in Hindsight: Following the Future trilogy, Ratchet's Jerkass attitude is cast in a much darker light. Seemingly the Last of His Kind and having grown up on Veldin alone, it could be read that Ratchet became this way from being alone for over a decade. Notably, in the 2016 game, Ratchet is much nicer, seemingly because he had Grimm as a Parental Substitute.
- It Was His Sled: Captain Qwark was Evil All Along.
- That One Level:
- Gorda City ruins, on Planet Oltanis. In one path, you have to circumnavigate a path covered in ice (Why is it covered in ice, again?) while being blown about by heavy wind. In the other, you have to make it past droves of some pretty annoying enemies, including one grenade-launching ship that's tough to dodge. Oh and you can't use your jetpack because Clank got damaged by a lightning strike.
- The Hoverboard Races, particularly the second one on Kalebo III.
- That One Sidequest: Getting the RYNO. And sadly, the RYNO is very much worth all the time to get it.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Giant!Clank does not get nearly enough time as fans wished he did.
- Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Insomniac Games admitted that, while they were going for Jerk with a Heart of Gold, they made Ratchet too much of a jerk for people to root for him.
2016[]
- And the Fandom Rejoiced: Nefarious' original organic body is finally seen.
- Character Rerailment: While he still has some traces of his Future trilogy persona, the games does give Qwark some of his PS2 era smarts back.
- Critical Dissonance: Critics loved the game while diehard fans found it okay.
- Ensemble Darkhorse: Elaris and Grimm.
- Fanfic Fuel: Trying to make the reimagining work in the original continuity. The most commonly accepted piece of Fanon is that it's a publicity stunt by Qwark for his next presidential campaign.
- It's the Same, Now It Sucks: The biggest complaint about the game is that compared to both the 2002 movie and the movie, it doesn't change enough. Hell many of its cutscenes are outright recycled from the movie.
- Just Here for Godzilla: The main draw for many was to see Nefarious' organic body and to see him at his most unhinged and unashamedly evil.
- Narm Charm: In some areas, the game is just a bit too accurate to 2002. And it's all the better for it.
- So Okay It's Average: The general view on the game. It didn't break any new ground but it was the hardly the worst thing Ratchet & Clank ever produced.
- That One Sidequest:
- Like in 2002, those damn hoverboard races. At least the controls are far more responsive this time around.
- Several trophies are incredibly specific. Without a trophy guide, odds are players wouldn't even think of what's necessary to get them.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
- Chairman Drek, a shining example of Vile Villain, Saccharine Show in 2002, becomes Laughably Evil and no threat at all thanks to Nefarious' Popularity Power.
- Compared to Elaris, Cora and Brax are Flat Characters with little plot impact.
