Playable Characters[]
The Team in General[]
- Badass Crew: Oh, yes, all three of them.
- Combination Attack: The Tri-Attacks, which have all three of them attack together while running in a triangle, which deals a massive amount of damage and has several special effects depending on who's leading the attack.
- Dark and Troubled Past: They've all been through a lot. To elaborate:
- Leanne was one of 20 children used in an experiment by Rowen, Sullivan and Juris to test Zenith's control over life and death via crystals. Each child had a respective crystal that was programmed in such a way so that the corresponding child would die at a designated time (Leanne was supposed to die on her 20th birthday). Leanne was subject #20, the last child who was supposed to die. When she neared the hour that she was scheduled to die, she decided to escape her prison. Once outside, she decided to attempt suicide, realizing that she would die soon anyway, but ended up being saved by Zephyr.
- Zephyr was brought up in a seminary from a young age. Zephyr was a part of Sullivan's experiment to transfer Rebecca's traits onto the children of Crank Seminary. He became the only success of the experiment. However, his transformation caused him to become Ax Crazy, and he slaughtered a bunch of school children and his own sister. He expected to die for what he had done, but his immortality prevailed despite being shot twice in the head by Vashyron. He decided to live to try to figure out why he was spared, and worked for Vashyron.
- Vashryon was the only survivor on the losing side of a large scale assault under the command of a Cardinal, which was carried out by Rebecca.
- Improbable Aiming Skills: It doesn't matter what kind of firearm any of the three main characters picks up, they'll be a master at it the moment they touch it.
- Nice, Mean and In-Between: Leanne, Zephyr and Vashyron, respectively. Leanne is a generally sweet girl who serves as The Chick and Morality Pet of the team, Zephyr is a sadistic, somewhat sociopathic Jerk with a Heart of Gold and Vashyron is a Chivalrous Pervert who kills (bad) people and monsters for a living, which wouldn't be so bad if he didn't outright say he enjoys his job.
- True Companions: They all really care about one another.
Leanne (Reanbell in the Japanese release)[]
"If I have to die, I'll die on my own terms." |
Voiced by: Aya Endo (Japanese) and Jessica Di Cicco (English) |
An upbeat and delicate looking girl who seems a little out of place doing mercenary work. Zephyr saved her from a suicide attempt and she "followed him home."
- A-Cup Angst: Not really an issue for her unless Vashyron is teasing her about this.
Vashyron:Too small for a good look, huh? |
- Action Girl: Although she and the other two constantly mention how inexperienced she is, this girl kicks serious ass on the battle field.
- Anger Born of Worry: After she saves Zephyr from being killed by Lagerfeld, she slaps him upside the head and berates him for wanting to die... before breaking down in tears and pleading with him to at least "die with courage" while clinging to his back.
- Badass Adorable: And how! Several NPCs will go on about how adorable she is.
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: Has quite a bit of this with Zephyr.
- The Chick: Though definitely not the passive version.
- Driven to Suicide: The first time you see her in a cutscene, she's jumping to her doom, only to be saved by Zephyr. Only later in the game will you find out why she did that.
- Hair Decorations: With Catgirl and Meido variations available in addition to more normal hair bands.
- Girly Run
- Golden Thigh Ratio
- Morality Pet: For Zephyr and, to a lesser extent, Vashyron
- Mysterious Waif
- New Meat: As noted above, she's considered the least experienced member of the team; and it's implied that she only recently (as in, a year after she moved in) started accompanying the other two on their missions.
- Nice Girl: She's very sweet and kind, particularly when compared to the greedy Vashryon and Trigger Happy Zephyr, and tends to bring out the best in both of them as a result.
- This trait only becomes increasingly obvious as time goes on, to the point that in the final chapter, she still can't bring herself to hate Rowen even after that all he's done to them. Both Rowen and Zephyr are baffled by this.
- Panty Fighter: Leanne's dress tends to ride up with all the flips she tends to do, causing her white panties to be visible from several camera angles.
- Pervert Revenge Mode: To Zephyr when he sees her naked in Chapter 2. Very unusually, she apologises almost immediately afterwards.
- Phlebotinum Rebel
- The Protagonist: She arguably gets the most Character Development, and the protagonists' conflict mostly revolves around her. Odd, since the dynamic within the trio doesn't really suggest this.
- Sexy Santa Dress: Worn during the Christmas mission, and complained about endlessly.
Leanne: Aah, this skirt's too short! |
- Small Girl, Big Gun: Depending on what you choose equip her with, she can wield one or two of the largest weapons in the game.
- Stepford Smiler: She seems very upbeat and happy, but the mask starts to crack at the end of Chapter 5.
- Tsundere: Type B. She's normally nice, but she's not above dealing out physical abuse to Vashyron for being a pervert. She also smacks Zephyr more than once when she feels he's being particularly wangsty.
- Undignified Death: If Leanne is killed by a shot to her head, her legs are flung wide apart as her body falls to the ground, and she dies with her thighs spread open. Approaching her dead body with Vashyron if she died this way will sometimes have him comment on her shameful posture and exposed panties.
- You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Says this to Zephyr after killing Lagerfeld, reminding him that she would be dead if he hadn't saved her.
Zephyr[]
"Will He still judge me as a child of God?" |
Voiced by: Hiro Shimono (Japanese) and Scott Menville (English) |
A reserved young man with a dark outlook on life. Vashyron took him under his wing and he's been making a living with his machinegun every since.
- Ax Crazy: In the game's opening cutscene.
- Anti-Hero: Even more so than Vashyron. While not exactly a Token Evil Teammate, his dialogue during battle is by far the most sadistic and he is very clearly messed up in the head. And yet, the very first thing we see him do in the game is save a girl from committing suicide, showing that he is ultimately a good person.
Vashryon: Justice triumphs again. |
- Bishonen: Oh, so very much. In his type B costume he could probably audition as a Gackt look alike.
- Chosen One: See Vashyron.
- It Sucks to Be the Chosen One: Considering what he did and what he wants, he's not happy about this at all.
- Deadpan Snarker: A lot of his combat dialogue breathes this.
Zephyr: That wasn't a battle. That was assisted suicide! |
- Death Seeker: His recklessness is due to this.
- Gangsta Style: He seems to like holding guns this way.
- Heroic BSOD: When he realized his life was miraculously saved despite killing 30 school children and his own sister. He feels a huge amount of Survivor Guilt.
- Mood Swinger: He can either be jovial or brooding, and frequently switches from one to the other.
- Phlebotinum Rebel: He was part of a second set of experiments by Sullivan, which gave him increased speed and strength, but also unhinged him to the point of causing mass murder.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his sociopathic tendencies, Zephyr leapt without thinking to save Leanne at the risk of his own life, offers her his jacket when she looks cold, and risks his life to retrieve her cold medicine when she gets sick.
Zephyr: I want Leanne to be happy. |
- Survivor Guilt: See Heroic BSOD above.
- Pet the Dog: His concern for Leanne's well-being is the one consistent sign that he's still got some humanity left.
- Troubled but Cute
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Vashyron.
- Zipperiffic: For some unexplained reason, the t-shirts of Zephyr's "B" costumes all have a small zipper near the neckline.
Vashyron[]
"A man should never let a woman wear too much makeup or too many clothes." |
Voiced by: Ken Narita (Japanese) and Nolan North (English) |
A man with self-professed "mad skills," Vashyron makes a living doing odd jobs with his gun. He acts as something of a big brother figure to Zephyr and Leanne.
- Anti-Hero: Really, he's a mercenary who kills people and monsters for a living, and sometimes just (armed) people who get in his way. Not to mention he outright states he enjoys his job. While not as scary as Zephyr, he's not a white hat, either.
- Berserk Button: Threatening or speaking ill of his employees or clients.
- Big Brother Mentor: He shows flashes of this when he's not being a Handsome Lech.
- Chivalrous Pervert: He's a pervert, make no mistake, but as shown in his interactions with Cardinal Theresa, he's perfectly capable of being a gentleman.
- Chosen One: Rebecca describes him as a Knight of Zenith. What this means in practical terms is that Zenith intervened when he was about to die and saved his life.
- Deadpan Snarker
- Hitman with a Heart: He may be a killer for hire (or, in his words, a merchant of death), but he doesn't kill innocents and genuinely cares about the two kids under his care.
- Only Sane Man: Definitely the most stable of the trio.
- Papa Wolf: Don't threaten Vashyron's employees when he's around. Just don't.
- Team Dad: It shows especially when Lagerfeld comes to kill Zephyr, how Vashyron feels about his companions; acting lightly at first, when Lagerfeld invokes a friendship between them thinking that will give him the boy, Vashyron snaps and blocks Lagerfeld from coming in.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Zephyr. The two often exchange playful bickering during combat.
Leanne: You want me on offence or defence? |
Non-Playable Characters[]
Rowen[]
"I'll set my doubts aside. I'll set them aside to build a world of order. For the sake of the people." |
= Voiced by Keiji Fujiwara (Japanese) and Jim Ward (English). =[]
One of the Cardinals, although he will not step forward to take up the mantle of Prelate. He is tormented by his past, especially the death of his beloved Frida.
- The Alcoholic: Drinks frequently, and loves blended scotch and malt whiskey.
- Badass in a Nice Suit: It's quite stylish, his suit. And he's badass.
- Badass Preacher: He's the highest ranking Cardinal of the Zenith religion, and a damn good marksman. Final boss of the game, too.
- Authority Equals Asskicking: This guy is hard if you're underleveled or your guns aren't fully customized.
- Crisis of Faith: Practically his personality. Guy worshipped Zenith as God, but then found he could control it, and thus, became God.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: His justification for dooming 20 newborn children to an early death (one every year for 20 years) is that he's doing it to fulfill Frida's dream of a free people.
Rebecca[]
"Look what they've wrought! They would use machines to spread the plague of their clockwork world. But the wastes beyond are our Eden. Now you die along with Zenith!" |
= Voiced by Yukana (Japanese) and Cat Taber (English). =[]
Although Rebecca appears to be an adolescent girl, the horns on her head hint at a far more esoteric origin.
- Bonus Boss
- Creepy Child: She's not too bad until you realize the "wine" she's been drinking is actually blood. And that's just the beginning.
- Good Wings, Evil Wings: Of the Power Wing variety.
- Petting Zoo People: She has curly little ram horns on her head.
- Power Gives You Wings
- White-Haired Pretty Girl
Sullivan[]
"Let me be perfectly clear this once: we're evil men who revel in our vainglory." |
= Voiced by Takehito Koyasu (Japanese) and Chris Edgerly (English). =[]
A researcher who appears to be helping Rowen. He is almost always accompanied by Rebecca. His past has ties to both Leanne and Zephyr's.
- Authority Equals Asskicking
- Big Bad: Nearly everything bad that happens to the main characters can be laid at his feet, including Zephyr's insanity.
- Bonus Boss
- Immortality Immorality
- Evil Laugh
- Pet the Dog: It's pretty obvious from the ending sequence that he genuinely cares about Rebecca.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy
Gelsey[]
"I'm alive! You all saw it, each and every one of you! I've been chosen by God!" |
= Voiced by Shigeru Chiba (Japanese) and Dwight Schultz (English). =[]
A man who is completely off-his-rocker nuts. He attacked Mine 24 to get at the Quartz vein, believing that if he found his star he'd be "chosen by God."
- Chewing the Scenery: In a cast of Large Hams, he shines above and beyond.
- Enemy Chatter: He has both interesting things hinting at the backstory to say to Vashyron and funny things to say to the other two.
Gelsey: Love the threads! |
- Laughing Mad
- The Mad Hatter: Seems to revel in his insanity.
Pater[]
"You've nothing to fear! Though it cost me my life, I, Cardinal Pater, bearer of the Celestial Jewel, will save you!" |
= Voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama (Japanese) and Jason Marsden (English). =[]
A cardinal with an almost child-like personality. He has a crush on Leanne, but can't work up the courage to talk coherently around her. He seems to have a friendly relationship with Zephyr. Friendly for Zephyr, anyway.
- Chekhov's Gun: In his first scene, he is given his quartz stone, which he fashions into a ring. Later, he punches out a monster threatening Leanne while wearing it, causing the ring to shatter. Pater dies.
- Giant Space Flea From Nowhere: He appears as a Bonus Boss in Neverland after his death, and no one remarks on this before or after the fight.
- Gonk
- Hollywood Nerd: Type 1, so very much.
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Seems like a real nerd at first, completely and totally awkward. But one soon learns that he deeply cares for the common people and is devoted to clearing out areas so they can have places to live.
Cardinal Theresa[]
A close contact of Vashyron, Cardinal Theresa often gives missions to him and his team.
- Cool Old Lady
- Friend to All Children: Sets up a Christmas party with presents for orphans in the Square Garden.
- Pimped-Out Dress
- Reasonable Authority Figure: One of the few cardinals who isn't evil, completely insane, or both.
- Something About a Rose: Her first mission involves going to a dangerous place and placing a (fake) rose on a gravesite.
- Widow Woman: Her husband has been dead for some time. It's implied that this is Victor, Vashyron's friend who died fighting Rebecca.
Prelate Frida[]
"I want to see that world. A world where people live life as they want to."' |
= Voiced by Yuki Sakura (Japanese) and Julie Nathanson (English). =[]
The former leader of the Church who died twenty years before the events of the game. She was extremely well-respected by the other Cardinals and was Rowen's wife.
- The Chessmaster: Implied to be in control of Zenith at the end, showing that even a dead woman can manipulate events.
- Posthumous Character
- Too Good for This Sinful Earth
