Characters from Riverdale include:
Main
Archie Andrews
Archie is framed as the perfect all-american boy next door, but is suffering from low self-esteem, likely stemming from being sexually taken advantage of by his music teacher. Generally, Archie is a good-hearted guy just trying to do his best to make the town he lives in and his friends lives happy and secure, often times neglecting to look inwards and deal with his own troubles. Makes friends easily and all the girls seem to fancy him.
- The Ace
- Alliterative Name
- Become Their Own Antithesis: Archie steadily succumbs to this Season 2 thanks to Hiram Lodge's influence. He kicks this in the penultimate episode but as he learns, it's not a good idea to cross a mob boss.
- Boy Next Door
- Broken Ace
- Chick Magnet
- Chronic Hero Syndrome
- Hot-Blooded: Unfortunately, he ends up being accused of murder for this reason.
- In-Series Nickname: Arch
- Lovable Jock: Though he also has an aspiration for music.
- Mr. Fanservice: “Why would he own a shirt?”
- Redheaded Hero
- Serial Romeo: Archie goes all in on all of his relationships.
- Singer Songwriter: In high school.
- What the Hell, Hero?: Archie decides to become a mafioso-in-training under Hiram Lodge after his father, Fred Andrews, is shot. He does suffer the consequences of this choice throughout Season 3.
Betty Cooper
Comics-wholesome girl next door Betty Cooper gets an untreated mental illness that the show at one point horrifically turns into a bdsm fetish and never takes seriously. Referred to in the narrative as a hitchcock blonde, this is essentially what the show goes for: beneath the locks and blue eyes is a disturbing family of murderers, although Betty herself seems to escape consequences for her mess at every turn. Still perenially in love with Archie, who returns her affections equally.
- Cute and Psycho
- Fille Fatale
- Girl Next Door
- In-Series Nickname: Betts
- Ms. Fanservice
- Pink Means Feminine: One of her signature colours, denoting her alleged innocence, which masks unrest beneath the tidy surface.
- Sins of Our Fathers: Betty presumes she doesn't get in to Yale because her Dad was a serial killer.
- Stepford Smiler
- Tomboyish Ponytail
- Wrench Wench
Cheryl Blossom
A stereotypical fiery redhead semi-subverted by a repressed sexuality, abusive parents and her twin brother's tragic death. Cheryl is a character one can sympathise with in the first season. However, Season 2-onwards she becomes a parody of herself, constantly 'learning' not to be a bully and then immediately backtracking, treating everyone around her like crap while nobody blinks an eye. Most egregiously she terrorises three black characters with no consequences in the narrative. Otherwise a walking one-liner spouter to great humourous effect.
- Adaptational Sexuality
- Alpha Bitch: It was most prominent in Season 1 but shades of it still pop up every now and then.
- Attention Whore
- The Cheerleader: Page image.
- Coming Out Story
- Drama Queen
- Drunk with Power
- Fiery Redhead
- Fille Fatale
- In-Series Nickname: Cher, mostly by Veronica.
- Lady in Red
- Lipstick Lesbian
- Ms. Fanservice
- Psycho Lesbian: The first indication of her sexuality is her stalking Josie, her supposed best friend, and framing an innocent guy for it. She's not above instigating fights with people, is constantly emotionally abusive to people and during a break-up with her girlfriend, Toni, pushes, verbally harasses and attempts to publicly humiliate her.
- Redheaded Bully
- School Clubs Are Serious Business: Cheryl dramatically considers it a matter of life or death whether she can be a cheerleader.
- Woman in White: Notoriously, in the series defining opening scene, and at Jason's memorial
Fangs Fogarty
A new recruit for the Southside Serpents, Fangs forms a close bond with the gang, especially Sweet Pea. He, Sweet Pea, Toni and Jughead become very close in Season 2, but fragment the following seasons. Fangs is bi and and has relationships with Midge Klump and Kevin Keller
- Adaptational Sexuality
- Alliterative Name
- Ascended Extra
- Bi the Way
- But Not Too Bi: Had a mostly off-screen affair with Midge; onwards has only been romantically linked to guys
- Mr. Fanservice
- Promoted to Love Interest: for Kevin
- Race Lift
- Twofer Token Minority: Mixed race and bi.
- Your Cheating Heart: With Midge
Josie McCoy
Lead singer and front woman of the trio Josie and the Pussycats, Josie is a popular school idol revered by all. She is tenacious and disciplined, dealing with her mother's ambitions on her behalf as well as her musician father's disapproval.
- The Chanteuse: In the Noir Episode, but also as a general noir spoof at La Bonne Nuit in Season 3.
- Demoted to Extra
- Face of the Band
- Iconic Item: Cat ears
- Ms. Fanservice
- Parental Abandonment: Her father
- The Prima Donna
- Race Lift
- Put on a Bus to Spin-Off land.
- The Bus Came Back: In Season 5, Episode 15.
- School Idol
- Sugar and Ice Personality
Jughead Jones
Re-imagined as a pretentious emo aspiring writer, who constantly name drops authors and auteurs. Contrary to comic Jughead's chill content and solo aspiration being acquiring food, TV Jughead is more into the morose tragedies of the town, to the point of obsession. Rarely suffers consequences for his actions and intermittently mocks his supposed best friend, Archie, with whom he's in a romantic rivalry over the affections of Betty.
- Alliterative Name:
- Cool Loser
- Deadpan Snarker
- Drowning My Sorrows: In Season 5
- Foil: To Archie
- Hollywood Nerd
- Iconic Item: Crown beanie
- In-Series Nickname: Jug, Juggie
- Informed Loner
- Muse Abuse
- Not Good with People: “I don't fit in. And I don't wanna fit in”
- Only Known by Their Nickname
- Preppy Name: *deep breath* Forsythe Pendleton Jones III
- Writer's Block: In Season 5
Kevin Keller
Pretty much only defined by his sexuality. Barely gets storylines and when he does, they revolve around him being gay. Tends to gossip and doesn't treat others very well. Best friends with Betty before, and at the beginning of, the show, and becomes friends with Veronica for a while, both of which later fall away.
- Alliterative Name
- Badass Gay: Muscly and one of the top athletes on the wrestling team; also protects a bunch of townspeople with a sword in Season 5.
- But Not Too Gay
- Gayngst
- Mr. Fanservice
- Pet Homosexual
Reggie Mantle
The counterpart to Archie's do-gooder jock and also Archie's antagonist, Reggie suffers from an abusive home life and shields himself from the world with bravado and jerkiness.
- Abusive Parents: The 'father'
- Demoted to Extra
- Foil: To Archie
- Handsome Devil
- Irrational Hatred: Of the Southsiders, in Season 2.
- Jerkass Facade
- Jerk Jock: Although it turns out it's because his father hits him.
- Mr. Fanservice
- The Prankster
- Pretty Boy
- Race Lift
- Shiny Midnight Black
- Tall, Dark and Handsome
Tabitha Tate
A tough, level-headed and ambitious woman who returns to her family's home town and legacy business to run it. Tabitha has a business degree and left a six-figure job offer to come to Riverdale.
- Agent Scully: Despite finding the Mothman mystery for Jughead to look into, Tabitha is patently the skeptic.
- Alliterative Name
- Family Business: Pop's, which Tabitha owns and takes over after Pop retires in Season 5
Toni Topaz
Toni grew up on the poorer side of town and is very grounded, smart and capable. She joined the Southside Serpents as she is legacy through her paternal grandparents, but also found community and acceptance within the gang. Toni is loyal and forthright with people, has a passion for photography and is proud to be from the Southside.
- Alliterative Name
- Bi the Way
- Biker Babe
- But Not Too Bi: Hooked up with Jughead once, then said “I'm more into girls” and that was it.
- Demoted to Extra
- Ms. Fanservice
- Neighbourhood Friendly Gangsters
- Token Love Interest: To Cheryl.
- Twofer Token Minority: Actually three, as she is a woman, Black and bisexual.
Veronica Lodge
Supposedly reformed bully, who eventually starts taking whatever she wants, whenever she wants and supports her criminal father. Constantly name-dropping brands she owns things from, celebrities she might have partied with and, akin to Jughead, authors and auteurs. Veronica cares a great deal about her friends and wants to help them, which usually includes money. Very into Archie like the comics, except it seems to be because she can control him and otherwise seems to find him exasperating when he follows his heart.
- Adaptational Heroism: Not that Veronica was ever an outright villain in the comics or other adaptations but she had a lot of Spoiled Brat moments and could readily step into the role of the Alpha Bitch and/or grab the Jerkass Ball if the script called for it. Here, Veronica is a reformed bully who is arguably a more objectively heroic person than Betty.
- Ambiguously Bi
- Baby Got Back: Whenever Veronica is wearing short shorts or a swimsuit, the camera will find a way to get behind her.
- Brutal Honesty: Tends to be this way with her friends, or acquaintances.
- Daddy's Girl: To the point of disbelief. She stands by and defends him after he's attempted to kill several of her supposed friends
- Dramatic Necklace Removal: After she finds out what her father did to Manfred Muggs.
- Fille Fatale
- Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Veronica's signature color.
- Gratuitous French
- Ice Queen
- Mafia Princess: In Season 2.
- Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Veronica is tiny but she can still knock out people with a single blow.
- Race Lift
- Shiny Midnight Black

Alice Cooper
