Scoob! is a CG-animated film produced by Warner Animation Group (the same studio that brought us The LEGO Movie). The film is based on the Scooby-Doo franchise and serves as an Origin Story about how Scooby, Shaggy, and the rest of Mystery Incorporated first met each other. It is also the first installment of a proposed Hanna-Barbera cinematic universe (not unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe).
It was originally set to be released to theaters on May 15, 2020, but due to the then-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it was instead released to VOD platforms on the same date.
The first trailer was released on November 11, 2019, and the second trailer was released on March 5, 2020.
Tropes used in Scoob! include:
- A Minor Kidroduction: The first few minutes of the film show Scooby as a puppy and Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma as pre-teens.
- Adaptational Badass: Dynomutt is much smarter and more competent here than he was in the 1970s television series he starred in.
- Aluminum Christmas Trees: In this movie, Scooby is related to Alexander the Great's dog, Peritas. And yes, the real Alexander the Great really did have a dog named Peritas.
- Continuity Snarl: This movie creates yet another multiple choice Origin Story for Mystery Inc.
- Crossover: As mentioned above, the film is intended to be the start of a cinematic universe consisting of Hanna-Barbera series and characters. Blue Falcon and Dynomutt, Dick Dastardly and Muttley, Captain Caveman and Dee Dee Skyes are confirmed to be part of this universe.
- Line-of-Sight Name: In this iteration, Scooby is named after a box of Scooby Snacks.
- Origin Story: The beginning of the film shows Mystery Inc. gang meeting each other as pre-teens during Halloween night and solving the mystery of a supposedly haunted house.
- Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Halfway through the film, when Blue Falcon makes a new costume for Scooby when Scooby joins Blue Falcon, Dynomutt, and Dee Dee Skyes to stop Dick Dastardly from bringing Cerberus out from the Underworld, Scooby is forced to take off his collar, which causes Shaggy to become jealous of Scooby and feel unneeded.
- Ridiculously Cute Critter: As a puppy, Scooby is insanely adorable!
- Spin Offspring: The Blue Falcon shown in this film, named Brian, is actually the son of the original Blue Falcon.
- Vocal Dissonance: Even as a puppy, Scooby sounds just like his teenage/adult self.
