Shimmer and Shine is a magical girl Nick Jr. show that came out in August 24th, 2015 and ended on February 2020. The show was going to have a 5th season in November 2020, but got delayed. The show centers on two genies in training named Shimmer and Shine, who get help from their best friend Leah (and next-door neighbor Zac) with three wishes a day and never give up on their mistakes. The show’s animation was changed to CGI in 2016 when the second season began, and introduced a brand new character: a villainess named Zeta, who wants to rule Zahramay Falls.

Tropes used in Shimmer and Shine include:
  • Adorably Precocious Child: The two titular genies, along with Leah
  • Amazing Technicolor Wildlife: Miss Squirrel in the third season has purple fur with blue eyes. Parisa is also one of those who is a fox with purple fur.
  • Art Evolution: The show originally had 2D animation in the first season, while it was changed to 3D animation in the second season to onwards.
  • Awesome Music:
    • The theme song. Yes, it put a little effort to it, and it’s sung by Melanie Fontana herself. She had more than BTS than this show.
    • The Mistake Song. Although it’s not mistakes to the end of Zahramay Falls.
    • And also, the magic carpet song where the two genies go to help Leah make three wishes. There’s also a reprise version called Go Back Home, which is very nostalgic.
  • Badass Adorable: Shimmer and Shine themselves. They often help Leah take in a badass attitude by granting her three wishes and not giving up on big mistakes.
  • Beach Episode: “Ahoy, Genies!”
  • Big Fancy Castle: Shimmer and Shine turn Leah’s bedroom into a beautiful castle for a princess and dragon movie in the episode “Lights, Camera, Genies!”.
  • Cheerful Child: Leah. Shine is also cheerful as well.

  • Growling Gut: Shine’s stomach rumbled twice in the episode Sleepover Party and near the end of Treehouse Retreat

  • Halloween Episode: “A Very Genie Halloweeny”
  • Help, I'm Stuck!: Leah gets stuck before the old treehouse gets broken in the episode “Genie Treehouse” and Shimmer and Shine get stuck in vases at the very end of the episode.
  • Inevitable Waterfall: There is a beautiful waterfall with rainbow colors in the magical town of Zahramay Falls. When the girls ride on their carpet with Nahal and Tala to help Leah throughout the adventures in the first season, they encounter a magical waterfall that reveals a cave. And when the waterfall has no rainbow colors in the third season, the girls find a way to bring back the rainbow colors with a magical rainbow genie named Imma.
  • Innocent Alien: Nopal in “Spaceship Wrecked”.
  • Magic Carpet: The two titular genies ride on one in every episode of the first season before they help Leah throughout each adventure and in the second season, they have a magic carpet race.
  • Magic Mirror: There was only one in the episode “My Secret Genies” where the mirror shows every little boy and girl that are before Leah.

  • Nutty Squirrel: The squirrels, known as Mr. and Mrs. Squirrelson by Zac in the episode “Genie Treehouse”. When Shimmer, Shine and Leah go inside the old treehouse, the squirrels mess it up and eat nuts if they can.
  • Obsessed with Food: Shine is literally obsessed with food, including pizza, cupcakes and hot dogs.
  • Origins Episode: There was an episode in the first season entitled “My Secret Genies” in which we first met Shimmer and Shine when they first met Leah at a carnival, after Leah gets her very own necklace there.
  • Our Genies Are Different: All genies from the show come in all shapes and sizes. They don’t need to help other people give three wishes or fly magic carpets.
  • Panthera Awesome: Nahal, Shine’s pet white and purple bengal tiger
  • Pep Talk Song: One of the songs from the show is “Mistake Song”, in which, when one of the two genies makes a mistake, Leah decides to cheer them up, and the song plays afterwards about making mistakes, too.
  • Pillow Fort: Shimmer, Shine and Leah decided to build a pillow fort during their sleepover in the episode "Sleep-Over Party" and have a dance party in it too
  • Pink Means Feminine: Shimmer has pink hair, while Shine has blue hair.
  • Plot Twist: When Shimmer makes a treehouse during the “Make a Wish” song from “My Secret Genies”, it makes a plot twist to the episode “Genie Treehouse” when Shimmer, Shine and Leah build a treehouse to replace the old one thanks to the squirrels.
  • Photo Booth Montage: Used in the reprise of the arcade song in the episode “Game On!” where the two titular genies, their pets and Leah taking silly photos during a montage.
  • Pun-Based Title: One episode had Escape Goat, which is a pun on the phrase Scapegoat

  • Slumber Party: The episode “Sleep-Over Party” has Leah inviting Shimmer and Shine over to her house to have a magical sleepover party together by building a pillow fort and forming a band there.
  • Sweet Tooth: Throughout one episode, Shimmer, Shine and Leah make cupcakes for the school bake sale, and there comes a giant river of cupcakes, and one comes a giant cupcake turned into a normal one. How sugary is that?

  • The Something Song: From the first season, we have “The Mistake Song” and from the Nick Jr. official channel, “The Genie Song”, which is also known as “Magic Carpet Song”.

  • Transformation Sequence: Leah transforms into a princess in the episode “Lights, Camera, Genies!” and a genie by Zeta in the episode “Genie for a Day”.
  • Treehouse of Fun: When the old treehouse got broken in the episode “Genie Treehouse” from some squirrels, Shimmer, Shine and Leah help work together to build a new one thanks to Zac. What a great team.
  • Video Arcade: There was an episode called “Game On!” in which the two titular genies and their wish granter Leah (with Zac, Nahal and Tala coming along) enter a video arcade with many games and even a Dance Dance Revolution and Super Mario Bros. parody.

  • Walking Swimsuit Scene: Probably a lot in “Ahoy, Genies!”.

  • Yandere: Leah has this at times to Zac.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Shimmer has long pink hair while her sister Shine has long flowing blue hair. Both Shimmer and Shine have these colors in long ponytails.
