The Main Characters[]

Vyse

"One day, I shall see what lies beyond the clouds, the so-called limits of the world."

The hero of Skies of Arcadia, Vyse is a young, idealistic air pirate who dreams of sailing beyond the sunset. He fights with a pair of cutlasses. In the epilogue, he, Aika, and Fina continue to sail the skies.

Accidental Pervert: If you examine the Schmuck Bait yellow hankie on Aika's wall right when you get to Pirate Isle. Ouch.
The Captain: Of the Delphinus, the coolest Cool Airship in the game.
Captain's Log: Vyse's journal, which can be accessed through the menu.
- Actually, everyone gets to write in it, not just him. He does tend to write the most important entries, though.
Chick Magnet: He meets a girl not long after the game begins.
Detached Sleeves
Determinator: Holy hell is he ever.
Dual-Wielding: Though outside of S-Moves, he only actually uses one sword to attack. He uses the smaller, secondary one for blocking.
Eyepatch of Power: His goggles are actually in the form of this.
Expy: Of Captain Harlock.
Goggles Do Something Unusual: It's a zoom lens. And it detects moonfish.
- Goggles Do Nothing: Except in battle. There is a code to remove them. Right, right, left, left, up, down, up, down, right, left.
Gondor Calls for Aid: Although he didn't so much call for it as everybody showed up and said "hey, we heard you were gonna take on Galcian's flagship, need help? We wanna join the fun."

The Hero: Naturally.
Heroic BSOD: A very minor one near the end of the story. Galcian is set to take over the world, with an entire armada at his beck and call, an Atlantis-like continent as his fortress, said fortress protected by an shild (which the heroes have already tried, and failed, to breach), and an ancient superweapon that he has already used to wipe out Valua (and could easily do so to the rest of the world). While Vyse isn't keen on giving up, he's also realistic enough to know that he and his crew don't stand a chance aginst odds like that (at least without help, see Gondor Calls for Aid). It's the only time in the game that we see him at a loss for a course of action.
Heroes Love Dogs: If you recruit Pow, he continues to sail with Vyse long after the story's over.
Heroes Prefer Swords: In his case, he dual wields swords.
Jumped At the Call
Just Like Robin Hood: The biggest difference between the two of them is that he actually keeps the gold he obtains from the rich. They're still heroic though and fight against the corrupt empire.
The Kirk
Lovable Rogue: He wouldn't be a hero if he wasn't one.
The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Subverted at the beginning where he and his father's crew attack Alfonso and steal his goods. Played straight for pretty much the rest of the game.
Playing with Fire: He learns red (fire) spells faster than the other 5 elements.
- Shock and Awe: His specials are mostly electricity-based, though.
Red Baron: Swashbuckler ranks, culminating in Vyse the Legend.
Rummage Sale Reject
- Actually lampshaded by the Yafutomans.
Sword Beam: When attacking from a distance.
- Razor Wind
What Could Have Been: He was considered for SEGA-All Stars Racing but didn't end up making the final cut.
- But has made the cut for the sequel, causing many fans to start throwing wallets at SEGA.
Wise Beyond Their Years: An NPC lampshades this if you keep picking the right Swashbuckler options.

The Delphinus

A Super Prototype of a new class of airship designed by Admiral De Loco and the Valuan Armada, equipped with the most powerful cannons, armor plating, and a Moonstone Cannon. It was created for Prince Enrique, but he gives it to Vyse once he joins the team.

Cool Airship
Global Airship: Once fully upgraded, it's the only fully global Global Airship.
Super Prototype: The first of the planned Delphinus-class battleships.
Wave Motion Gun: Moonstone Cannon... FIRE!

Aika

"Friends and treasures, which shall I take? Why both, of course!"

Vyse's childhood friend, who lost her parents when she was little. A tomboyish air pirate who loves treasure almost as much as she loves her friends, but she can't swim and is terrified of ghosts. She moves quickly and fights with a large boomerang. In the epilogue, she, Vyse, and Fina continue to sail the skies.

Action Girl: Since she's one of the three main characters in the game, she ends up fulfilling the trope.
Combat Medic: She's a good offensive character, and learns green magic, which is primarily healing spells, the fastest.
Conveniently an Orphan: The reason why she's part of the Sky Pirates.
Fashionable Asymmetry: Her single glove, though it arguably makes sense considering her weapon.
Fiery Redhead: She acts this way if Vyse spies on her in her room.
Fragile Speedster: In combat.
Genki Girl: She's more energetic than her partner Vyse.
Giving Someone the Pointer Finger: On the American Dreamcast box art.
Goggles Do Nothing: She doesn't actually need those goggles to see.
Imagine Spot: Has, shall we say, a vivid imagination when it comes to foreign cultures. In summary, she predicts the desert heat will immolate Vyse instantly; that she will be eaten by monsters in the jungle; that she will be eaten by fish-people in Yafutoma; and that the artic cold will cause Vyse to freeze instantly.
The Lancer: Hybrid of this and The Chick; unlike most Lancers, her personality doesn't differ significantly from Vyse's other than the fact that she's rather hyper.
Letting Her Hair Down: Undoes her hair stalks when she goes to bed. Notably, men aren't allowed to glimpse her in this state (and if Vyse does, he takes a pounding for his trouble).
Lovable Rogue: Much like her buddy Vyse.

- Given her dress and general Genkiness, Y is also often attributed to Selphie Tilmitt.

Fina

"I'm sorry... But I just cannot tell that to anyone."

A mysterious girl from the Silver Civilization on a mission to recover the 6 moon crystals before the Valuan Empire does. She knows very little about the world outside her homeland. She is adept at magic and fights with her pet, Cupil. In the epilogue, she decides to stay on Arcadia and continue to sail the skies with Vyse and Aika.

Calling the Old Man Out: She calls out Elder Prime for wishing to reset the world, having learned that there are good people in Arcadia.
The Chick: A more traditional version than Aika. Double-teams it with The Smart Girl when it comes to Moon Crystal lore.
Cleavage Window: A Downplayed Trope variation. And it's there so her shard of the Silver Moon Crystal has a place to show itself.
Cool Airship: The only one that can exit the atmosphere.
Detached Sleeves
Distressed Damsel: A few times, such as the beginning of the game for instance.
God Guise: She's mistaken for a god by the people of Ixa'taka.

Pirate Girl: She doesn't dress like one until the epilogue cutscene, though.

Shrinking Violet: Before she opens up to the Blue Rogues. Justified by the fact that she has lived most of her life in the isolation of the Silver Civilization and has been warned that people in Arcadia are selfish and primitive.
Silk Hiding Steel: Evolves into this by the end of the game. She actually tells off the Empress of Valua IN HER OWN COURT for her misuse of the crystals.
The Spock

Tomboy and Girly Girl: Girly Girl to Aika's Tomboy, given that she's the less energetic of the two.
Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Now and then somebody makes a big deal over how they've never seen clothes like hers before, but it's not particularly often.
The Watson: As a Silvite, Fina is totally in the dark with regard to Arcadia and its rules.
Woman in White: You can tell by the iamge.
Yin-Yang Bomb: Although she learns all magic quickly, she learns Silver (light/darkness or "Void") magic the fastest.

Drachma

"My sole purpose is to capture Rhaknam."

An old fisherman who lost his arm, eye, and son to a giant arcwhale named Rhaknam; his life's goal is to hunt down Rhaknam to avenge his loss. He saves Vyse and Aika when they have a run-in with the arcwhale. He fights with his giant metal arm. He gives up hunting Rhaknam when the arcwhale saves his life and his ship. In the epilogue, spends his last days as a fisherman in honor of Jack and Rhaknam.

Animal Nemesis: He's Captain Ahab to Rhaknam's Moby Dick.
- Rhaknam is called Mobys in Japan.
Antagonist in Mourning
Artificial Limbs: His arm.
Badass
- Badass Beard: Look out, it's Robot Ernest Hemingway! And he'll kick your ass.
- Badass Grandpa
The Big Guy: A rather intelligent example.
The Captain: Of his own certified Cool Boat, the Little Jack. Called this by Vyse, Aika, and Fina.
Conscience Makes You Go Back: Sourly ditches Vyse and co. in Maramba, stranding them. Fortunately, he turns his ship around when he learns Belleza's in the area.
Cool Airship: The Little Jack, named after the son he lost along with his arm and eye.

Crash Into Hello: Vyse and Aika do the crashing, the Little Jack does the being crashed into.

The Ferry Man
Going Down with the Ship: The Little Jack is seemingly destroyed when Ramirez opens fire on it. Drachma, unwillingly to lose his quarry a second time, forces Vyse, Aika, and Fina onto lifeboats and remains behind on the flaming ship.
Good Is Not Nice: Not above threatening people with death unless they tell him what he needs to know. He even does this with Marco.
Good Scars, Evil Scars
Grumpy Bear: Put it this way: his one entry in the Captain's Log is titled "Harumph!"
Guttural Growler
Hook Hand: One of his early upgrades.
Jerk with a Heart of Gold
Joined Your Party: He falls in and out of the party early on, and when he finally rejoins for good this is noted as "Drachma joined your party... again."
Like a Son to Me: Secretly views Vyse in this way, though it takes him an age to admit it.
Making a Splash: He learns all types of magic very slowly, but he learns blue (water) magic faster than the other types.
Mighty Glacier
Never Found the Body: The Captain seemingly perishes in his final duel with Rhaknam. Actually, Rhaknam towed him safely all the way to the polar ice cap.
Not in This For Your Revolution: Drachma's only along for the ride until he gets another shot at Rhaknam. This ain't no RV.
- Subverted when he rejoins the party for the attack on Galcian's fleet.
Obi-Wan Moment: Gives Vyse a quick smile (his only one in the game) before being dragged away by Rhaknam.
Perpetual Frowner
Red Baron: Valua lists him as "One-Armed Drachma."
Team Dad: Though he resents it.
This Is a Drill: One of his weapon attachments. With a random chance of instakill, too.
Uppercut The Sky

The Little Jack

Drachma's airship. A fishing boat that has been with Drachma for a very long time. It was named after Drachma's son, who died when the ship was attacked by Rhaknam. It was almost destroyed by Ramirez, but was towed away by the giant arcwhale while it was still mostly in one piece.

An Odd Place to Sleep: The girls get their own cabin (converted from a storeroom), which leaves Vyse stuck with an engine room hammock.
Chekhov's Gun: There are some lifeboats aboard...
Grappling Hook Pistol: But rarely used for grappling. This function does save the ship and Drachma's life, though.
Harpoon Gun: Harpoon Cannon... FIRE!
What a Piece of Junk!

Gilder

"Only four of us against 100 of them, huh... Sounds fun. Count me in!"

An easygoing air pirate captain who lives in pursuit of excitement (and pretty women). He's one of the most famous Blue Rogues in the skies, and is on the run from a girl from back home who is determined to marry him. He rescues Vyse from a deserted island, and fights with a pistol. In the epilogue, he continues his search for "The Good Life."

Adjusting Your Glasses: One of his victory poses.
An Ice Person: He learns purple (ice) magic faster than the other types.
Badass

Bunny Ears Lawyer: Doesn't look like much, but he forms a plan to escape the Valuan Grand Fortress relatively quickly.
The Captain: Of his Cool Boat, the Claudia.
Casanova: Normally, he's portrayed as more of a Chivalrous Pervert, but he does have some choice lines, including his infamous motto...

"Women are like sunsets. Each one is beautiful, but there'll be a new one tomorrow."

Chivalrous Pervert: As evidenced by his mancave. ...er, the bridge of his ship.
Cool Airship: The Claudia.
Does This Remind You of Anything?: He has a pet parrot named Willy. And he's a Chivalrous Pervert.
Fun Personified
Gangsta Style: At close-range, though at close-range his gun is essentially right in the enemy's face. At long-range (his preferred range), he uses a much more practical two-handed grip.

The Valuan Empire[]

Empress Teodora

"All the countries shall kneel before me!"

The ruler of the Valuan Empire and Enrique's mother, Teodora is a ruthless woman who will stop at nothing to unite the world under Valuan rule, as she believes is her destiny. She wants the moon crystals to aid in her goal, and to threaten anyone who would dare resist her by unleashing a Gigas. She is killed when Galcian calls down the Rains of Destruction.

Aristocrats Are Evil
Big Bad: Directly responsible for all of the Valuan invasions that take place over the course of the game.
- Big Bad Wannabe: Is eventually revealed to be this once Galcian proves himself to be Eviler Than Her.
- The Heavy
Cutscene Boss: You never actually fight her and she's killed in a cutscene. It's less surprising than you'd think when you consider that, honestly, she looks too old to be any good in a scrap and we never see her using any magic, either.
Death by Irony: Crushed beneath the columns of her own throne dais.

Enrique

"Mother, the course of this country is wrong!"

The prince of Valua, who wants to see a peaceful world earned through diplomacy, not violence and conquest. He fights with rapiers and sabers. The Delphinus was meant to be his flagship but he gives it to Vyse when he joins him. In the epilogue, he marries Princess Moegi of Yafutoma and becomes emperor of Valua.

Asian Gal with White Guy: With Princess Moegi.
Bathos: It's clear that he's desperately trying to come off as cool at times, especially in his Special Moves, but a lot of the time it doesn't quite work... this is entirely in-keeping with his awkward mannerisms, though.
Beware the Nice Ones: Really, Enrique, did you honestly think you could convince your mother not to harness the Gigas after returning to Valua? Although, he had considered failure a possibility and was ready to kill her if she didn't agree.
Defector From Decadence
Jack of All Stats: Capable of using both offensive magic and physical attacks fairly effectively, but he's a bit slower than average to compensate, and his defense is often on par with Aika's.
Mother, I Don't Want To Rule With An Iron Fist: He doesn't want world domination, either.

Shock and Awe: He learns yellow (electric) magic the fastest.
Sixth Ranger / The Smart Guy: Fulfills this for most of the game once Gilder is gone.

The White Prince: Notably subverted; Enrique lives a very sheltered life until his defection from Valua, but he shows a great deal of understanding and respect for most commoners. He is not a wise price either, though, as he does not share that archetype's traditional level of melancholia.
- He does have many books from Valua that give information on the other cultures of the world.

Galcian

"I am not tolerant enough to give you a second chance."

Grand Admiral of the Valuan Armada, Lord Galcian is loyal to one thing and one thing only: power. He wants to rule the world with an iron fist, and is pursuing the moon crystals to aid him. His flagships are the Serpent and the Hydra which, like all Valuan ships, are named for constellations. He dies when Belleza rams into his escape pod.

The Brutal Dragon: For Empress Teodora.

Big "What?" / Oh Crap: Upon realizing that Belleza's Not Quite Dead.

Dark Messiah: Belleza and Ramirez consider him one.
Drunk on the Dark Side: His face while calling down the Rains of Destruction practically screams "UNLIMITTEEEDDD POOWWWAARGHHHHH!!!" And then there's his dialogue.
Even Evil Has Standards: After Alfonso cowardly kills his own Vice-Captain and abandons ship, Galcian relieves Alfonso's command of the Mid-Ocean fleet and forces him to restrict his operations to Ixa'taka. He also shows genuine respect for Gregorio after their duel and orders Gregorio's body shipped back to Valua, telling his men to take the utmost care with it, because it was "worth more than their lives."
- A God Am I: Once he gets his hands on the Silver Moon Crystal.
Evil Is Hammy: For the most part, he's a very cold, calculating, and emotionless baddie... then he gets his hands on Zelos' power to create the Rains of Destruction, and begins devouring entire sets.
Evil Laugh
Evil Mentor: Victorious in the case of Ramirez.
Good Hair, Evil Hair: Definitely evil hair.
High Collar of Doom: While wearing his cloak, at least.
Hitler Cam: As Ramirez glowingly describes the virtues of his boss, we see a cutscene of Galcian in this pose.
Hopeless Boss Fight: It's possible to fight him early in the game. Just not advisable.
Insane Admiral
Laser-Guided Karma: His ruthlessness ultimately got the better of him. Or, at the very least, if you're sending someone to their death, make sure they STAY dead.
Make an Example of Them: Mused over killing the Blue Rogues and leaving their carcasses "rotting in the sun" — but then admitted that they probably aren't dumb enough to resist capture.
- Up to Eleven in the case of the entire Valuan continent. They could use a little rain....
Mighty Glacier: You'll more-than-likely outspeed him during the battle, but he'll hit like a tonne of bricks unless you're careful.
Obviously Evil: What? You mean the pantomime moustache, high collar, and theme tune that sounds like a funeral march on evil pills didn't tip you off?
- Why wait until his appearance in the story? His appearance in the intro makes him do a theatrical flourish towards the camera as the set turns into a flaming background around him.
Shock and Awe / Yin-Yang Bomb: Uses mostly Electric and Void magic in the battle against him.
The Starscream: To Empress Teodora. Played with in that she is the only one who doesn't seem to realise.
Take Over the World
Unflinching Walk: His Terminator stride while atop a fast-moving Valuan bullet train.

Ramirez

"...Slay the enemy. That is all."

Galcian's former vice captain, who was promoted to Admiral of the newly-formed sixth fleet of the Valuan Armada. He would follow Galcian to his own death. His flagship is the Monoceros, meaning "unicorn" in Greek. He is also from the Silver Civilization, and was the one originally sent to gather the Moon Crystals, but some bad experiences with the Valuan Armada turned him cold and cynical. He is killed by Vyse and his friends after fusing with Zelos. His only remnant, his Silver Moon Crystal, is given a burial at sky.

Aerith and Bob: At least when compared with the Silvite Elders, whose names all sound like Autobots.
Ambiguously Gay: Villainous White-Haired Pretty Boy? Check. Strictly platonic relationships with every woman he meets in the game? Check. Name of his ship is "unicorn" in Greek? Check. Undergoes a Heroic BSOD and Face Heel Turn when his first (male) mentor betrays him? Check. Undergoes a Villainous Breakdown, cries and attempts to take all of Arcadia down with him after Galcian's death? .....Check.
Avenging the Villain
Authority Equals Asskicking
Broken Pedestal: Galcian warned him not to place others too high. When his estimation of Medosa is shattered, Ramirez shifts his admiration to Galcian.
Bullying a Dragon: Admiral Mendosa actually thought he and his men could take Ramirez in a fight. Bad idea.
Burial At Sea: Even with all that's happened, Vyse recognizes Ramirez as a fellow sailor and returns his Moon Crystal to the sky.
The Dragon: To another Dragon.
- Dragon Ascendant
Evil Costume Switch: The additional scenes in Legends show Ramirez wearing all-white Silvite clothes (similar to Fina) when he's retrieved by the Valuans. He dons a suit of chrome armor upon joining Mendonsa's fleet, and finally the black uniform after slaughtering Mendosa and his crew.
Evil Counterpart: To Fina. Had Ramirez been the Silvite who was found by Vyse's crew, and Fina fallen into the hands of Valua, their fates might have been reversed.
- He is also the complete opposite of main character Vyse.
Evil Is Deathly Cold: His S-moves have a bit of an ice-themed spin.
Face Heel Turn: Although it happened long before the story began.
Fallen Hero: According to Fina (and optional flashbacks), he used to be a lot like Vyse. The main difference was that he was(still is?) much more suseptable to other's wills.
Final Boss
Freudian Excuse: Betrayal by the Valuan Admiral Mendoza, a man whom he greatly respected.
He Knows Too Much: Forced to kill his mentor and superior officer after discovering his side venture in Ixa T'aka: a forced labor camp.
Horrible Judge of Character
Hopeless Boss Fight: Until you fight him at the end of the Very Definitely Final Dungeon, you can reduce his HP to 1, but you can't kill him.
Manly Tears: His eyes are still glistening when Vyse confronts him at last.
- Tears of Blood: During the animation for his "Silver Tundra" attack, Ramirez raises his head, allowing a single tear of blood to roll down his cheek. Shudder...
Master Swordsman: The guy can cut light with his sword. He can also call up icy spires and impale people on them. Pretty boy though he may be, he is not one to be crossed, and you'd do very well to listen to Fina's advice the first time he gives you the choice of surrendering or dying.
Misanthrope Supreme
Not So Different: His old living quarters in the Great Silver Shrine is eerily similar to Vyse's loft on Pirate Isle. A model ship and cartography map are on display, and Fina confirms that Ramirez once dreamed of exploring the world.
Omnicidal Maniac: After Galcian dies, he kind of... loses it... And decides that all of the world deserves to die if Galcian can't rule it.
One-Winged Angel: Twice. Following his defeat, he merges with Zelos, and later crash-lands on the Delphinus to start the fight anew.
Out of the Inferno: Twice.
Person of Mass Destruction: When he fuses with Zelos, they become this.
Platonic Life Partners: With Fina, before his Face Heel Turn.
Recurring Boss: Though only 2 fights are actually necessary, the others are optional (and impossible to win).

He is killed in a Heroic Sacrifice battle against Galcian.

His lust for revenge gets the better of him as he ignores the damage his Chameleon took and continues to fight Vyse. Vyse kills him by destroying the Chameleon at Deep Sky. Interestingly, this makes him the only one of the five admirals to die at the hands of Vyse.

The Gigas are six living weapons (red, green, blue, purple, yellow, and silver) created by the Old Civilizations of Arcadia to go to war with each other. They are controlled by activating their respective Moon Crystals.

Recumen

The first Gigas, made by the red civilization and residing in Nasr, is activated by Belleza. It attacks with a supercharged heat beam known as the "Red Ray" from one of its four heads. It is put to rest by Belleza to avoid it rampaging and killing her crew.

Hopeless Boss Fight: You can't win, but you run away to attack Belleza instead.
He Was Right There All Along: Camouflaged as the four "statues" at the base of Pyrynn Temple. Their empty gaze is turned in on the Gigas' activation console.

The second Gigas, made by the green civilization, is found in Ixa'taka. It is awakened by Ixa'taka's king and goes on a rampage when he is knocked unconscious. It has no real long range weapon, so it hurls boulders, and its punch can destroy small islands. Oddly, its attacks have little to do with healing or poison. It is defeated by falling into a river and being unable to pick itself up out of the ditch. It is then deactivated.

He is mortally wounded by Ramirez and flees home to Glacia, but dies as a result of the encounter, leaving the Purple Moon Crystal for Vyse.

Super Senses: He can see small and distant things very precisely. If you speak to him on Crescent Isle, he'll tell you little things that your crew has been up to (like stealing each other's lunch).

Black Pirates[]

The Black Pirates are the opposite of the Blue Rogues. Where Blue Rogues are Just Like Robin Hood, Black Pirates are... well... Pirates. They attack merchant vessels for their goods and it's implied that many rape women. In Legends, you can take on some of these pirates in optional Bounty Missions.

Baltor

A Black Pirate feared around Mid Ocean. He attacks ships for their cargo in his ship, The Blackbeard. Vyse encounters him while escorting a Nasrian merchant home and is the game's first ship battle. He swears revenge and returns near the end only to be hopelessly outmatched by the Delphinus's power. He joins forces with Vyse to take out Soltis and, in the epilogue, goes back to chasing Vyse.

Anticlimax Boss: The second time around, especially after De Loco.

Rupee

Rupee is the newest leader of the infamous Larso Clan of Nasrian Black Pirates. Though the wanted poster seems imposing, the figure on the poster is actually his bodyguard, Barta. The actual Rupee is a small boy. He doesn't want to be a pirate, preferring to make carpets like his mother. After he and Barta are defeated, Vyse encourages him to do what makes him happy.

Gordo

Gordo the Round is a fat, gluttonous pirate who attacks ships for their food. After his defeat, he recognizes Drachma as the sailor hunting Rhaknam to avenge his son, this revelation of his motives enrages Drachma. Gordo later opens a restaurant in North Ocean.

Lapen

A reckless, ruthless pirate who destroys towns with his Super Robot, Gunarm. He is one of the adopted sons of Centime, and learned most of his engineering skills from him. However, Lapen resents his "old fart" of a father for being what he sees as cowardly. Lapen wishes to be famous and known across the world for his brilliance unlike Centime. After his defeat, he learns that fame and infamy are not the same. He decides to become an engineer and hopes to surpass his father.

The Ixa'ness Demons

Three young triplets, Tara, Pera, and Lira whom have been abducting men from other villages for their all-female village. They enjoy flirting with Vyse both before and after the battle. They make fun of Aika and Fina for being "old hags" much to Aika's anger and Fina's confusion. After the battle we learn that the "abducted" men went of their own accord.

He asks Vyse if they can "warm each other up." Vyse takes evasive action.
