Sony and Disney are currently in a power struggle over the Spider-Man movie rights. Since such a struggle prevents Sony from making movies about Spider-Man, their solution is simple:
make movies about Spider-Man's supporting characters.
And thus we have the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (or the Sonyverse for short), a cinematic Shared Universe by Sony/Columbia, with no input from Disney, about Spider-Man's enemies, Spider-Man's friends, and Spider-Man's relatives.
The first movie in the Sonyverse is Venom. Following that are Morbius and Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Sony has plans to make movies about Nightwatch, Madame Web, the Sinister Six, Silk, Jackpot, Mysterio and even Aunt May.
Naturally, this universe has Broken the Base: some see it as a legitimate comic-based cinematic universe on its own right, others see it as an Ashcan Copy little different from Fant4stic.
Tropes[]
- Adaptational Heroism: Venom and Morbius.
- Adaptational Wimp: Donna Diego dies before she can become Scream, and John Jameson dies before he can become Man-Wolf.
- Age Lift: Carnage is much older than in the comics.
- Big Eater: Venom.
- The Cameo: Stan Lee in Venom, one of the last he did before his death.
- Composite Character: Carlton Drake becomes Riot in Venom.
- Darker and Edgier: In general compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (barring the Netflix shows) and even the X-Men Cinematic Universe (barring Logan); the films give anti-hero characters the limelight and feature darker color schemes and horror elements.
- Superman Stays Out of Gotham: Venom is nowhere to be seen in Morbius, and Morbius is nowhere to be seen in Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
- Our Vampires Are Different: Morbius is a "living vampire" created by science, rather than a supernatural undead being.
- Shared Universe
- Villain Movie: So far, all the movies in the Sonyverse have been this. If the Nightwatch, Silk, Jackpot and Aunt May movies get made, they will mark the first Sonyverse movies with heroes as the protagonists.
- Writing Around Trademarks:
- Vulture, played by Michael Keaton, shows up in Morbius. They will most likely refrain from mentioning anything about Vulture that connects to the Marvel Cinematic Universe
- Spider-Man is still wanted for murder in this universe, but the circumstances behind it are most likely different. Even if it's still Mysterio's murder, most of the stuff that connects Mysterio to the MCU will be removed.
- Shriek in Venom: Let There Be Carnage will not be a mutant.
