Expect lots of Badass Tropes.
WARNING! There are unmarked Spoilers ahead. Beware.
Maka Albarn[]
Voiced by: Chiaki Omigawa (JP), Junko Takeuchi (JP - CD dramas), Laura Bailey (EN) |
Badass Bookworm heroine and meister to Soul. Her goal is to obtain the 100 souls required to turn Soul into a Death Scythe. She succeeds.
- Action Girl
- All Men Are Perverts: Out of all the genderswapped girls, Maka's the only one to get a nosebleed. Coincidence?
- Made even better by Soul lampshading it.
- Almighty Janitor: Not anymore, since Soul is a Death Scythe now.
- Awesome By Analysis: by chapter 76 she and Soul pull a CMOA via this trope.
- Ax Crazy: Under the effect of the black blood when fighting Crona.
- Back-to-Back Badasses: With Black Star.
- Badass Adorable
- Badass Bookworm: Soul is her weapon of choice. Her second favorite weapon? A nice, hard book.
- Badass in Distress: What Maka went through in the Envy and Sloth chapters. She seems to be back to action now that she's determined to save Crona even when everyone thinks s/he's hopeless now, though it didn't stop some people from crying "Chickification".
- Badass Longcoat
- Battle Ballgown/Kicking Ass in All Her Finery: The Black Blood dress armor.
- Berserk Button: In the anime, after she befriends Crona, hurting Crona is her berserk button. An example, during the final fight with Medusa in the anime, Crona gets badly injured trying to protect Maka. Maka then unleashed a No-Holds-Barred Beatdown on Medusa. See it here.
- More specifically, Medusa sets off a Berserk Button in Maka for what she did to Crona. Maka also finds Medusa extremely frustrating to deal with, especially since Maka seems to want to find the best in everyone.
- Soul getting hurt is also one, especially if she's the reason he gets hurt, although to a lesser degree. The most obvious is their in their initial fight with Crona. The next time they meet, she beats the shit outta the kid, before befriending him/her of course.
- But Not Too Foreign: Is half-Japanese
- Catch Phrase: "I'll take your soul." Or something similar.
- "Maka...CHOP!" Mostly anime.
- Childhood Friends: With Black*Star
- Cooldown Hug: With Crona.
- Country Matters: In the Hungarian dub.
- Cry Cute: Well, Maka is usually a tough girl, but...just look. Might count as Moe, too.
- Cute Bruiser
- Dangerously-Short Skirt
- Demon Slaying: One of the few characters gifted with the sought-after anti-demon wavelength. As a result, she's extremely sensitive to anything "demonic" and extremely effective at killing anything "demonic".
- Determinator Plucky Girl: Eventually. When she does become it though, the only thing that can stop her is unconsciousness or death. Really. This is more focused on in the manga particularly when fighting against the mad clown and destroying Arachne, where her absolute grim determination tops everything else (in the anime they changed it to "courage").
- The manga has Arachne stating that courage cannot win every battle. Considering Maka's current dilemma in the Book of Eibon, it looks like she had a point; bravery isn't the problem here.
- Nope, by chapter 75, she fixes it with determination/courage.
- Actually deconstructed, because she finds it by accepting that she needs to work with Soul in order to win, overcoming the influences of the Book. It wasn't purely about standing up to the bad guy.
- Does Not Like Men: Due to her issues with her father.
- It's not quite extended to men in general. Only the ones who act inappropriately get Maka-Chopped or otherwise punished. Some, like Stein, Kid, Soul to an extent Maka has little problem with.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: At least to some, Maka's scythe-spinning is reminiscent of color guard flag-spinning.
- Everything's Better with Spinning
- Expressive Hair: In the anime her pigtails stand up and/or wiggle when she's agitated.
- Fan Service: While Maka was mainly an aversion of this starting from the first chapter, recent color pages have been showing her...um...development. Especially with the color page of Square Enix for Chapter 77, where her outfit looks quite similar to Yoko's.
- Or maybe Black★Rock Shooter
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Choleric.
- Gender Bender: Along with the rest of the Spartoi
- Generation Xerox: Somewhat, with her mother.
- Girlish Pigtails
- Green-Eyed Monster: The Envy Chapter forces Maka to acknowledge her envy of the other meisters who want to be Soul's partner, people like Liz who can appreciate music with Soul, and music itself.
- Green Eyes
- Half-Human Hybrid: Her mother is a human while her father is a weapon. Slightly averted in that she doesn't seem to be any different to other humans. (Well to be fair, in Soul Eater the "weapons" are just people with the special power to transform. They're still human.)
- In the anime, she can unlock a weapon form while she's asleep.
- Hammerspace: Where does that book come from?
- The Heroine
- Heroic Self-Deprecation: Maka has a lot of secret insecurities about her strength as a meister. Something of a Tear Jerker in how it came about, illustrated by her seeming inability to pull of one of her signature moves, and coming after a period of Maka having gained much greater confidence and increased ability in the areas which troubled her earlier on; see how she handles both Arachne and Gopher.
- Improbable Weapon User: Might not be as outlandish as other characters' cases (e.g. Kim fights with something identified as a lamp and Kilik with twin pots), but if you consider that a scythe is a legitimate agricultural hand tool, this could be applicable.
- Joshikousei: In the manga, after becoming part of Spartoi.
- Lamarck Was Right: She gains the ability of Demon Hunter, which was created by her mother.
- This is the case, as with the demonslayer wavelength, only in the anime. The manga doesn't (...or has yet to) make this connection between Maka's rare skills and her mother.
- Also in the anime her weapon form
- Let's Get Dangerous: Does this a lot after becoming part of Spartoi. Particularly when she learns to fly. At first she creates these cute fluffy wings that she's determined to keep (Soul, naturally, hates them)... and then the bad guys show up. The cute fluffy wings change into something else rather quickly.
- Magic Skirt: In the anime.
- Odango: Temporarily donned this while studying for the exams
- The Only One Allowed to Face You: Maka to Crona after hir Face Heel Turn and complete descent into madness. She's so determined to get Crona back to hir senses that, while hunting for hir along with a few other Spartoi members in Italy, she pretends not to know where Crona is when she's actually found hir right away, and sends the others on a Wild Goose Chase to ensure their confrontation remains one-on-one; she even goes without Soul. The only ones aware of her determination (Soul, Black Star, and Tsubaki) respect her decision to fight alone, but make themselves available in case things go south.
- Open the Iris: Averted with her normally invisible pupils becoming visible when emotionally shocked.
- Panty Shot: Source for this in the manga. Not a very reliable source, mind you - the fan service in general gets toned down as the series progresses, and Maka was never exactly Ms. Fanservice to begin with. The anime averts this, however, instead using the Magic Skirt trope.
- Pettanko: Compared to the other girls in the cast, anyway. And this anxiety is played-up in the manga.
- Lampshaded by the cast in chapter 72, where everyone turns into the opposite gender and Maka's friends note that Maka hasn't changed a bit...
- Which is hilarious when you consider that Soul, who often mocks her for this, turns into a prudish, bossy, flat-chested girl.
- Lampshaded by the cast in chapter 72, where everyone turns into the opposite gender and Maka's friends note that Maka hasn't changed a bit...
- Power Gives You Wings
- Precision F-Strike: Both in the Hungarian dub, which has plenty of Cluster F Bombing. Her first was "I'm gonna kick... HER ASS!" The other one was "Go crawl into a cunt!"
- Sailor Fuku: After joining Spartoi
- She Cleans Up Nicely (As seen in the Ballroom Blitz-esque episode)
- She's Got Legs: The anime especially likes to remind us of this.
- Ship Tease: With Soul. And how. The Wikia entries for both Maka and Soul make it explicitly clear, no matter what Ohkubo says (as if his throwing himself on top of her to protect her from certain death and her worry that other female meisters might be better suited weren't hint enough):
It is hinted that the two may share romantic feelings towards each other, although it is never stated in general. |
- Significant Anagram: Maka is an anagram of 'kama', which means 'scythe' in Japanese.
- Slasher Smile
- Super-Powered Evil Side
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: The Black Blood.
- Laughing Mad: When under the influence of the The Black Blood, especially in the anime.
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: The Black Blood.
- Throw The Book At Soul: Maka Chop!
- Took a Level in Badass: The demon-hunter. This thing kills witches and insanity. If that doesn't count as Badass, I don't know what does.
- Anime only: pulling off the Kishin Hunter, pretty much assumed to be Lord Death's personal skill
- Vitriolic Best Buds: Her and Soul.
Soul Eater (Evans)[]
Voiced by: Kouki Uchiyama (JP), Soichiro Hoshi (JP - CD dramas), Micah Solusod (EN) |
Maka's snarky Demon Scythe partner, who constantly strives to be a "cool" guy, with mixed success. He's also a talented pianist, but suffers some resentment towards his more gifted violinist brother, Wes.
- Achey Scars - Chapter 83 has his scar from Ragnarok aching, due to Medusa's experiments with Crona's black blood.
- Always Save the Girl
- Attractive Bent Gender: Gives Tsubaki and the female half of the fandom a Stupid Sexy Flanders moment.
- Ax Crazy: When the black blood decides to act up in chapters 83 and 84.
- Byronic Hero: By Stein's analysis, his aura indicates a "dark, negative and cynical person."
- Catch Phrase: Seems to have a preference for using the word "Cool".
- Character Title
- Code Name: Possibly since in Soul Eater Not! it is stated that Shibusen/DWMA students can chooses their own name.
- Cool Bike
- Deadpan Snarker
- Deal with the Devil: Happens when he gets infected by the Black Blood, which manifests itself as a devil in his head that offers him power in exchange for his sanity.
- Maka and Soul eventually give in to this so that they can defeat Crona and just barely regain their sanity.
- Embarrassing Middle Name: Subverted. He doesn't like it when people use his last name.
- Even the Girls Want Her: A very strange example: boy!Tsubaki thinks female!Soul is really cute. Sure she's a he at the time but it's still a female brain.
- Every Boy Is Cuter With Hair Decs
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Phlegmatic.
- Gender Bender: Along with the rest of the Spartoi.
- Green-Eyed Monster: The Envy Chapter shows us that Soul, despite all he has accomplished as a Weapon, still envies his brother Wes's superior musical talent.
- Heroic Willpower: He got his chest chain sawed and still got back up!
- Heterosexual Life Partners: With Black☆Star
- The Lancer
- Leitmotif
- Meaningful Name: Might be named after Bill Evans, a prominent 20th century jazz pianist.
- Musical Assassin
- Nosebleed: Whenever Blair's around.
- Noun Verber
- Power Gives You Wings
- Red Eyes, Take Warning
- Sanity Slippage: After a period where it seemed the Super-Powered Evil Side held no danger, this one is back in chapter 83 thanks to him being near black blood.
- Sarcastic Devotee: To Maka
- Scars Are Forever: After getting this, becomes shirtless in weapon form.
- Scythe Beams: Can do this
- Shapeshifter Weapon
- Sharp-Dressed Man: Soul looks really good in a black pin-striped suit.
- Ship Tease: See Maka's entry.
- Shirtless Scene: During the exam episode, and sometimes when in weapon form.
- Sinister Scythe
- Slasher Smile: A rare heroic example. But it's more from his teeth being inexplicably jagged than anything else.
- Super-Powered Evil Side
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: The Black Blood.
- Talking Weapon
- Vitriolic Best Buds: Him and Maka.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy: The "Pretty" part may depend.
- Has only become more apparent in the manga over the Art Evolution it's undergone. Compare his initial appearance in earlier chapters to this.
- Definitely in Lust chapter... but as a White-Haired Pretty Girl. According to Tsubaki. And many fans.
Black☆Star & Tsubaki Nakatsukasa[]
Black☆Star[]
Voiced by: Yumiko Kobayashi (JP, anime and CD dramas), Brittney Karbowski (EN) |
A loud-mouthed ninja who doesn't seem to grasp the concept of stealth, Black☆Star is a perpetual show-off whose stated goal in life is to surpass God. He is Tsubaki's meister.
- The Ace: Frequently lampshaded. The only thing that holds him back from succeeding in every mission is his own need to show off.
- Almighty Janitor: After the Book of Eibon arc, Death the Kid hails Black☆Star as the strongest meister in Shibusen, and yet Black☆Star is far from promoting Tsubaki to a Death Scythe or be recognized by the masses that he indeed is the strongest.
- Anime Hair/Shounen Hair
- Anti-Hero
- Attention Whore: SO VERY MUCH. To the point that, at the start of the series, he tries to kill Kid just because he was getting more attention than him.
- He eventually grows out of it, specially in the manga.
- Back-to-Back Badasses: With both Maka and Death the Kid.
- Badass
- Beware the Silly Ones
- Big Eater
- The Big Guy: Well, he DOES use force a lot and his ego is big, so...
- He is the strongest member of Spartoi.
- Blasphemous Boast
- Badass Boast: When he gets serious.
- Boisterous Bruiser
- Catch Phrase: "I am the man who will surpass God!" and "YAH-HOO!"
- Character Development: Especially in the manga.
- Chewing the Scenery: Any damage to the scenery is probably the result of Black☆Star chewing on it.
- Childhood Friends: With Maka
- Cross-Dressing Voices: He's voiced by a woman in both the Japanese and English versions.
- But not in the Hungarian dub...which actually makes him slightly more tolerable.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: When Black☆Star actually shuts up, he's able to fight well.
- Dark Is Not Evil
- Deadly Upgrade: The Shadow☆Star.
- He gets better.
- Determinator
- Expy: Freaking Naruto. The similar personality, back story, power up-grades etc. (just see down the list of tropes) can be a bit of a Base Breaker in some circles. It's also been suggested that Black☆Star is meant to be an exaggerated deconstruction of the whole Naruto-personality-thing, but if you compare Black☆Star with the current Naruto, you'd probably cock your head to the side.
- Who else immediately thought of Chipp Zanuff when he first saw Black☆Star?
- Fearless Fool
- Fingerless Gloves
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sanguine.
- Gender Bender: Along with the rest of the Spartoi.
- Big Breasts, Big Deal: Temporarily, after the gender switch in chapter 74 and being who he is he must point it out.
- A God I Will Surpass
- Good Old Fisticuffs: At times
- Green Eyes
- Groin Attack: Ahh Angela Leon, as you would say, "Got you right in the balls!"
- Hard Head: He fell thousands of feet HEAD FIRST and that didn't faze him.
- Hellish Pupils: His pupils turn gold and star-shaped later on.
- They've recently turned blue.
- High-Pressure Blood: That may spray out even through his hair.
- Highly-Visible Ninja/Incoming Ham
- Idiot Hero
- Insistent Terminology: The ☆ in his name, all mentions (and I mean all) to him in the manga has the star on it, scanlators or other circles may excuse themselves with an asterisk sometimes, but in the original publication the ☆ will always be there.
- I Have the High Ground: He loves this one. Once being so high up that nobody could hear him.
- "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Against the Face Heel Turned Kid. Doesn't mean he'll stop trying to both talk and beat sense into him, though.
- It ultimately worked, and Kid's more or less back.
- Innocent Cohabitation: According to Black☆Star in Chapter 75, Tsubaki and he sleep in the same room because they aren't enough rooms in the house. Kilik is jealous because, hey, it's Tsubaki we're talking about here.
- Japanese Pronouns: Refers himself as Ore-Sama most of the time.
- Jerkass
- Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Honestly, a girl as sweet and good-natured as Tsubaki-chan is more than he frankly deserves.
- Lampshaded By Maka.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Though he is willing to get beat over the head for almost an hour by three people to keep her safe, and genuinely cares about her well being.
- In the manga he's defintitely is the Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
- Ki Attacks
- Kirk Summation: Gives one to Kid and, by extension, The Black Mass in 78.
- Large Ham: 90% of Ham in the manga you can attribute directly to Black Star. In the anime... not so much.
- Last of His Kind: Averted with the introduction of Akane.
- Lightning Bruiser
- Lucky Charms Title
- Made of Iron: Just look at what Kid had to do to him just to make him stay down. Oh, and he's up and running again in a few hours.
- Monochromatic Eyes
- The Napoleon
- Ninja
- No Indoor Voice
- Nosebleed: Whenever he's spying on Tsubaki in the bath. This becomes a Reverse Funny Aneurysm moment when the Lust chapter reveals that Tsubaki is much more perverted than he is.
- Only One Name
- Open the Iris: Averted, similair to Maka, his normally invisible pupils becoming visible when emotionally shocked or angered.
- Progressively Prettier: When he goes through phases of character development in the manga, Black☆Star keeps getting artistic face lifts, stradling away from his initial bratty appearance; as of now he looks nothing like he once was, in fact, he and Soul Eater could be seen as handsome brothers due how similar they look sometimes.
- Scarf of Asskicking: His Shadow☆Star Zero Kata Masamune and later after he joins Spartoi he gets one.
- Scars Are Forever: His star tattoo is bisected by a scar after his final battle with Mifune in the manga, indicative of his character development. And from that same fight he got scars down his arms and one on his face.
- Screaming Warrior: He uses loud voice to disrupt Crona's Screech resonance.
- Sleeves Are for Wimps
- Super Senses
- Ted Baxter: Only applies for the anime, later in the manga his strength starts to match his massive ego.
- The Other Darrin: Averted unlike the others his seiyuu voiced him in both the Drama CD and the Anime.
- Tiny Guy, Huge Girl: To Tsubaki.
- Too Dumb to Fool: He proudly proclaims that his sixth sense is so bad that he's unaffected by Asura's hallucinations. He was wrong.
- Took a Level in Badass: In the manga. When Shibusen tracks down Crona, he encounters him/her and whups his/her ass so hard that even Medusa starts getting a little disconcerted at how the fight's going. Then she sent Eruka and Mizune sisters as backup, they don't help much.
- Well, there's that and the fight which first demonstrates that improvement; after how badly he'd been getting beaten before leaving for Japan the proper dark demon blade mode, when Black☆Star and Tsubaki fight Mifune, comes out of nowhere.
- The fact that he doesn't give into the "Madness of Power" in chapter 78 bears mentioning. Thirty chapters ago, he would have. Character Development is a marvelous thing.
- Tranquil Fury: He's most dangerous when he's not talking.
- Warrior Therapist: Succeeds in talking Kid back to sanity.
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Literally and without him losing his mind.
- The Worf Effect: Black☆Star suffers from this (he beats Mifune in his first appearance and takes down Sid, but is utterly overpowered by Stein, bested by Death the Kid, needs help to take down Free, fails to stop Medusa, is one-shotted by Asura during his awakening, utterly humiliated by Mifune during their rematch, and failed to complete his objective during the battle with Mosquito) and indeed suffers a minor Heroic BSOD from it. Later in the anime after recovering from his Heroic BSOD, he fights Asura and the Worf Effect started when Asura recovered from Death the Kid's Death Cannon with all three Sanzu Lines.
- Would Hit a Girl: Maka asks him to hit her. He does. In the face.
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair
- Your Other Left: Has this problem in the anime.
Tsubaki Nakatsukasa[]
Voiced by: Kaori Nazuka (JP), Mamiko Noto (JP - CD dramas), Monica Rial (EN) |
Black☆Star's agreeable and level-headed Dark Demon Blade partner. She can change into multiple ninja weapons (shuriken, smoke bomb, a katana, etc).
- Badass Adorable
- Barbie Doll Anatomy
- Berserk Button / Beware the Nice Ones: the only time she actually snaps at Black☆Star is if he sees her bathing.
- For failing to even try being sneaky! She acts indifferent to the idea of him peeping if he would bother to at least seriously practice being stealthy.
- BFS
- Blue Eyes
- The Chick: Along with Liz and Patti.
- Covert Pervert: For someone who scolds Black☆Star for peeking at her in the bath, it turns out she's Not So Above It All.
- Not so much, she basically implied that Black☆Star can peep...as long as he doesn't get caught.
- Dark Is Not Evil: After defeating her brother.
- Detached Sleeves
- Expy: Other than the personality she bears a close resemblance to Ibuki.
- Fan Service: Probably the sexiest naked back in an opening, ever.
- Fashionable Asymmetry
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Supine.
- Furo Scene: Time delay before her first bath? One episode.
- Gainaxing
- Gender Bender: Along with the rest of the Spartoi.
- Hey, It's That Voice!: Tsubaki is Nunnally!
- Explains the I'm Taking Her Home with Me feelings parts of her fandom get.
- Innocent Cohabitation: According to Black☆Star in Chapter 75, Tsubaki and he sleep in the same room because they aren't enough rooms in the house. Kilik is jealous because, hey, it's Tsubaki we're talking about here.
- Morph Weapon: Can turn into Stock Ninja Weaponry, including a Fuuma Shuriken, a smoke bomb and a katana.
- Ms. Fanservice
- Nice Girl
- Ninja
- Purple Eyes
- Scarf of Asskicking: Gets one after joining Spartoi.
- Shrinking Violet
- Silk Hiding Steel: She's possibly the nicest character in the series. Now watch her fight with her brother.
- Slipknot Ponytail
- Swiss Army Weapon
- Tall, Dark and Bishoujo
- Talking Weapon
- Team Mom: The most level-headed and emotionally mature of the children.
- Tiny Guy, Huge Girl -> One Head Taller: To Black Star.
- Yamato Nadeshiko: You'd have to be, to deal with Black☆Star on a daily basis.
- Zettai Ryouiki
Death the Kid & the Thompson Sisters[]
Death the Kid[]
Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano (JP), Takako Honda (JP - CD dramas), Todd Haberkorn (EN) |
Son of the Grim Reaper and meister to Liz and Patti. He is a very gifted meister whose only flaw is his crippling OCD, which manifests as an obsessive need to have everything be symmetrical. Hence, his naturally asymmetrical hairstyle is a source of great angst for him.
In the recent story arc, Kid has been kidnapped by Noah and is trapped in the Book of Eibon. His mental state has seemed to take a turn for the worse... so much that he either went crazy, was Brainwashed, or just plainly had a Face Heel Turn.
And now he's going to kill the Kishin in his father's place. ON THE MOON.
- Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Gets on his hands and knees and begs the witch's council to aid Shibusen in destroying Asura, right after reminding them that he can kill every one of them without any trouble.
- Almighty Janitor: Perhaps the only one of the three main teams to still count as this. Black☆Star and Maka are promoted to two-star students whereas Kid, thanks to having been kidnapped by a magician, is still where he started. Though for him it always was more of a technicality.
- Anti-Hero
- Back-to-Back Badasses: In the anime with Black☆Star.
- Badass Baritone
- Badass in a Nice Suit
- Beat It by Compulsion: The easiest way to take him down.
- Berserk Button: If Kid cannot fix something asymmetrical, he will blow it up. Also, insulting his father is a bad move.
- BFG: Death Cannon.
- Bishonen
- Black Cloak: Wears one along with a skull mask on certain missions, making him look just like his father from certain angles.
- Brainwashed and Crazy
- Catch Phrase: "Kichiri Kachiri", which could be translated as "Precise and Perfect".
- In the english dub, it's 'Absolutely Perfect'.
- Cool Board
- Dark Is Not Evil: His insanity powerup.
- Defense Mechanism Superpower: The Sanzu Lines function as this when Mosquito tries to kill Kid, although they can also be activated at will.
- Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette - When he gets serious, he looks downright creepy.
- Eyes of Gold
- Fashionable Asymmetry: Mostly subverted, but played straight with his hair (much to his chagrin).
- Fatal Flaw: His obsession with symmetry keeps him from winning fights he would otherwise have no problem with.
- Flash Step
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Melancholic.
- Gangsta Style: Kid takes this Up to Eleven by gripping his guns upside-down
- Gender Bender: Common in the fandom. And a rather pretty one at that.
- Ironically... when it actually happened in canon to Spartoi, he wasn't present.
- Go Mad from the Revelation: He got better.
- Gun Fu
- Guns Akimbo
- The Gunslinger
- Heel Face Revolving Door: In the Book of Eibon arc, he becomes hell bent on destroying the world to get the perfect order. Thanks to Black☆Star, he goes back to normal.
- Heroic BSOD: Played for Laughs whenever he does something unsymmetrical.
- Hover Board
- Humanoid Abomination: Described as a "Fragment of the Madness of Law" by G.O.O.
- Important Hairstyle: Once the lines in Kid's hair circle around his head, he can tap into amazing power, and unleash one of his most powerful attacks.
- James Bondage: After Noah sucks him into Eibon's book in the manga.
- Made of Iron: Though unlike other characters, he has the excuse of having the body of a god, and therefore capable of enduring massive amounts of physical damage.
- Not So Above It All: He would be the most mature and capable of the group, but his Super OCD tends to knock him down a couple pegs.
- Omnicidal Maniac: When he goes insane, he aims for a Class Z Apocalypse How. He gets better.
- The Perfectionist
- Rule of Cool: How he shoots his guns: Upside down with his pinkies.
- Sanity Slippage
- Shinigami
- Skunk Stripe: Has three of them.
- And they're actually a part of his powerup.
- The Smart Guy
- Spell My Name with an "S": Some earlier translations added an extra "d" to his name. It's been confirmed that there's only one.
- The Stoic: One of the more serious characters in Soul Eater...
- Not So Stoic: ...until his Super OCD kicks in.
- Super OCD: Severe and debilitating, but played for laughs because its one of the Acceptable Targets.
- Be it through force of will or meticulous devotion to detail, even the melted wax on the candles in his house is perfectly symmetrical[1]
- G.O.O. mentioned that Shinigami (and by extension Kid) represent the madness of law and order. In other words, the reason Kid's so screwed up is that he is literally the Anthropomorphic Personification of Super OCD.
- Super Sentai Stance: With Liz and Patti.
- Todd Haberkorn
- Took a Level in Badass: In the anime when he powers up against Asura and connects all three of his Sanzu lines.
- In the manga just one line connects when he activates BREW but that doesn't make the moment any less awesome.
- Then there's the time he connects two of his Sanzu lines and takes out a Noah.
- In the manga just one line connects when he activates BREW but that doesn't make the moment any less awesome.
- The Trope Kid
- Utopia Justifies the Means: Now that the Cthulhu-looking black mass has convinced/brainwashed/etc. him he's the embodiment of order, his new mission being to end all of existence to create the ultimate symmetry.
- Weaksauce Weakness: His Super OCD. Once, in Baba Yaga's castle, Liz had to almost knock him out to get him to go the right way because he hadn't gone right an even number of times.
- The Weird Guy's Hot Son
- Why We Can't Have Nice Things: In his debut episode, Kid ends up destroying a pyramid much to his dismay.
- Why Did It Have To Be Asymmetry: Kid has asymmetriphobia, which is part of his Super OCD.
- And it doubles a his Berserk Button.
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Literally and without him losing his mind
Patricia "Patti" Thompson[]
Voiced by: Narumi Takahira (JP), Miyuki Sawashiro (JP - CD dramas), Cherami Leigh (EN) |
One of Kid's Double Team Demon Guns and the younger of the Thompson sisters. Her personality yo-yos between childish Cloudcuckoolander and insanely grinning Badass. Originally hails from Brooklyn.
In the recent story arc, Patti has switched to being Liz's meister in the wake of Kid's disappearance, later got Kid back and helps him to fight the Kishin on the Moon.
- Action Girl
- Attention Deficit Ooh Shiny
- Ax Crazy: There's been several hints that she can be one vicious girl underneath the goofy personality. She was apparently much worse before meeting Kid.
- Which explains why she looked like such a little psycho in the Lust chapter: She would love to cut loose again.
- Badass Adorable
- Bare Your Midriff
- Beware the Nice Ones: Surprisingly she can be quite serious if the situation calls for it. Even having to force Liz and Kid to get back in the spirit to fight. She can also be quite scary if having to go full force.
- BFG: As a Death Cannon.
- Big Eater: In the episode of Crona's party, she and Black Star could be seen sucking up the entirety of the buffet table. Earlier that episode, in a brief shot of the group having a meal, she's practically face down in her plate of food, shoveling.
- Also shown in the Gluttony chapter where she and Black Star go nuts from the second they enter... And then things start to go a little weird...
- Blue Eyes
- Blush Sticker
- Brooklyn Rage: From Brooklyn even!
- The Chick: Along with Tsubaki and Liz.
- Cloudcuckoolander: "Giraffe!! Giraffe!!"
- Combat Stilettos
- Cute and Psycho: Though some may argue it's merely because she's childish...the giraffe and the motherfucking-blue-sky would not agree.
- The way she acts when training would also give pause for thought on this one.
- Daughter Of A Whore: According to chapter 78.
- The Ditz
- Dumb Blonde: Only somewhat.
- Foreign Fanservice / Phenotype Stereotype
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Sanguine.
- Gainaxing
- Gangsterland
- Gender Bender: Along with the rest of the Spartoi.
- Genius Ditz: Apparently a very skilled martial artist.
- Genki Girl
- Heroic Bastard
- The Hyena: Complete with memetic laugh!
- Joshikousei: In the manga, after becoming part of Spartoi. Though unlike Maka, she retains her original shorts.

Elizabeth "Liz" Thompson[]
Voiced by: Akeno Watanabe (JP), Yuko Kaida (JP - CD dramas), Jamie Marchi (EN) |
Kid's other Demon Gun and the older Thompson sister. She is the more laid-back member of their Power Trio and often expresses chagrin at her teammates' wackiness. Originally hails from Brooklyn.
- Action Girl
- Akeno Watanabe
- Bare Your Midriff
- BFG: As a Death Cannon.
- Blue Eyes
- Broken Bird: This is elaborated on in chapter 78.
- Brooklyn Rage
- Character Development: By the main story she has already chilled out and happy to be part of Kid's team along with her sister. But her flashback after they're first encounter with him indicate she was really only in it for the money (see Gold Digger) and Soul Eater Not! (which takes place before the main story) reveals that she was still rude to a fault and even actively bullied the three protagonists just based on Anya's looks. Even further had she and Patti continued on with their destructive path they would've most likely turned into Kinshin. In fact their meeting with Kid wasn't coincidence, he was sent stop them before they continued further.
- The Chick: Along with Tsubaki and Patti.
- Cool Big Sis
- Covert Pervert: Perhaps this is the REAL reason Liz and Tsubaki get along so well.
- Cry Cute
- Daughter Of A Whore: According to chapter 78.
- Talking Weapon
- Deadpan Snarker: Sometimes
- Foreign Fanservice / Phenotype Stereotype / Gangsterland: Liz and Patti are blonde, wear cowboy boots, has large breasts, and are former muggers who liked to get high. It's like the American dream.
- Four-Temperament Ensemble: Supine.
- Gender Bender: Along with the rest of the Spartoi.
- Gold Digger: She and Patti originally agree to help Kid so she could take him for all he has. Then he grew on her.
- Heroic Bastard
- Irony: A supernatural force of nature is afraid of the supernatural?
- Meido Dressed up like one in the manga along with Patti.
- Mugging the Monster: Mugging the son of Death probably wasn't the brightest idea.
- Named After Somebody Famous: Her last name, Thompson, comes from the American firearms manufactuer, John T. Thompson. And of course, Liz and Patty's weapons forms are...you guessed it, guns.
- Nice Hat: Drops the hat after becoming a member of Spartoi.
- Only Known by Their Nickname
- Only Sane Woman: Though on a team with both Kid AND Patti, it wouldn't take much.
- Not to mention having to deal with Black☆Star and Soul and Maka on a regular basis.
- The only person who could match her for sheer sanity is Tsubaki (who is in a team with Black☆Star)...
- Parental Abandonment: According to chapter 78.
- Sibling Team: The Thompson Sisters.
- Token White: In Brooklyn, anyway - at least it's what we're supposed to believe.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Girly girl to Patti's tomboy.
- Tsundere: In Soul Eater Not!. Presumably she grew out of it by the time of the series proper.
- White Gang-Bangers
- Why Did It Have To Be Ghosts?
- Yaoi Fangirl: Her reaction to Soul and Black*Star Ho Yay moment this seems to be the case.
Ox Ford & Harvar D.[]
Ox Ford[]
Voiced by: Hiroyuki Yoshino (JP), Josh Grelle (EN) |
Ox is one of the top students at Shibusen in terms of grades and is Harvar's meister. He also has one-sided feelings for Kim. Later in the series when he attempts to rescue Kim from Arachnophobia and displays his sincere adoration for her, Kim starts to reciprocate his feelings.
- Adrenaline Makeover: After joining Spartoi.
- Anime Hair
- Badass Bookworm: Pretty much describes himself as such.
- Hot-Blooded
- Important Haircut: At one point, he gets rid of his signature "horns" for Kim. Not so much a haircut as him actually snapping them off. He does so while promising to Kim that he'll find her somewhere she can belong.
- Subverted shortly after. Kim restores his 'do for him in the same chapter.
- Mad Love
- Nerd Glasses
- Punny Name: Ox Ford = Oxford University (quite fitting, considering his intelligence).

- Specs of Awesome
- Unrequited Love: He hopelessly crushes after Kim.
Harvar D. Eclair[]
Voiced by: Wataru Hatano (JP), Scott Freeman (EN) |
Harvar is Ox's weapon and takes the form of a lance. In weapon form, he has the power of lightning. He is fiercely loyal to Ox and prioritizes his safety above all else while maintaining an ice-cold composure in battle even when Ox does not.
- Blade on a Stick
- Combat Pragmatist
- Cool Shades
- Punny Name: Harvar D. = Harvard University, like Ox's name is a Shout-Out to Oxford.
- Meaningful Name: "Eclair" is the French word for "lightning."
- Shock and Awe
- The Spock
- The Stoic: So much so that it offers him a degree of immunity to any madness based attack. While the rest of the cast is clawing their eyes out and screaming about spiders eating the inside of their skulls, he is subject to a mild tickling sensation.
- Talking Weapon
Kilik & Pot of Fire and Pot of Thunder[]
Kilik Lunge[]
Voiced by: Kenichi Suzumura (JP), Joel Mc Donald (EN) |

- Big Eater: In the Gluttony Chapter
- Gender Bender: Along with the rest of Spartoi.
- Hot-Blooded
- Improbable Weapon User: He fights using twin pots.
- Meaningful Name: If you translate his name differently, it ends up as 'Kirikou'. As in the West African fairy tale... or the (French) movie.
- Power Fist: His weapons are called pots, but they're essentially big ass metal boxing gloves. The left one is quite shocking, and the right one is on on fire.
- The Rival: A friendly one to Black☆Star.
- Scary Shiny Glasses
- Specs of Awesome
- Token Minority
Pot of Fire and Pot of Thunder[]
Pair of twins weapons, Pot of Fire and Pot of Thunder, used by Kilik. Though termed "pots", they resemble large gloves in their weapon form.
- Badass Adorable: Considering how they're toddlers and through ALL the freaky, scary stuff they've been through, and they haven't shown any signs of fear, they are DEFINITELY badass.
- Blue Eyes
- Dark Skinned Blondes
- Half-Identical Twins: As it turns out, Fire is in fact male.
- Power Fist
- Playing with Fire
- Shock and Awe

Jacqueline O. Lantern Dupré[]
Voiced by: Kanae Oki (JP), Jad Saxton (EN) |
Jacqueline is Kim's loyal partner and takes the form of a lamp. Her name is derived from jack-o-lanterns and the renown English cellist, Jacqueline Mary du Pré. Jackie knew that Kim was a witch all along though the discovery of this gets their relationship off to a rocky start as seen on Soul Eater Not!. Eventually she came around and vowed to follow Kim wherever she chose to go.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: When she and Kim join Arachne, though it takes awhile to snap her out of the effects.
- Curiously, while Kim acts out of character to Ox whilst under the effects of the insanity machine, Jackie's dedication to her meister remains.

- ↑ in the anime, at least. They melt the way you'd expect them to in the manga. Makes you wonder why someone as obsessive as Kid would even use candles for decorating.
