- Adaptation Displacement: Wait, Space Ghost used to be an actual show? (However, they did air re-runs on Cartoon Network in the 90s.)
- Badass Adorable: Birdman. Not as much as his original 60s counterpart, but Scott Finnell's voice for him is still adorable. See The Woobie below, too.
- Complete Monster: Sometimes Zorak and Moltar remind us all too well that they're dangerous criminals; Moltar mangled and ate Meatwad in "Baffler Meal" but treated it like a totally normal practical joke, and Zorak is so cruel he can eat his own nephew free of remorse.
- Although Moltar only killed Meatwad because Meatwad begged him to.
- Not that Space Ghost doesn’t join in; he blows up all of France for inventing the word “montage” and forced Jan and Jace into dangerous situations that got them severely injured.
- Crosses the Line Twice: Zorak eating his nephew Raymond, and Space Ghost's reaction.
Space Ghost: That's barbaric! ...Is there any left? |
- Crowning Moment of Funny: Has its own page.
- Crowning Music of Awesome:
- The theme. IT'S AWESOME!
- The "Ghost Planet Anthem" from the end of the episode "Sharrock."
- Man or Astro Man's ending theme starting with season 4.
- The Birdman Coast to Coast theme, known professionally as "Diggin' Uncle Birdman." Why it wasn't released on any of the CDs is beyond us. However, it was released on NRBQ (the band who performed it)'s 1999 CD NRBQ, as "Birdman." Even better is the second half of it. It totally sounds like something Adult Swim would play nowadays, and what's more is that someone has created a vaporwave remix of it.
- Ensemble Darkhorse:
- Brak. ALL HAIL BRAK!! (Hail Brak! Hail Brak! Hail Brak!)
- Birdman, due to his Memetic Loser status and Scott Finnell's hilarious raspy voice.
- Moltar, since he went on to host Toonami in its early years.
- Chad Ghostal is pretty popular among the fandom despite having one less appearance than Birdman, due to his sexy voice and the fact his first name is also a popular meme (that might have been inspired by him.)
- Evil Is Sexy: Chad Ghostal. I mean, just listen to his voice! This was even lampshaded in the episode "Hipster."
- Evilly Affable: Again, Zorak and Moltar.
- Fetish Fuel: Depending on who you are, Space Ghost itching in "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" is either this or awkward. It's how realistic it sounds that makes it even worse.
- Funny Aneurysm Moment: In the episode where Susan Olsen was being interviewed (circa 1996), Space Ghost's evil twin Chad asks her if she's related to Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. He then goes on about how freaky-looking they both are. In 2004, Mary Kate entered rehab for anorexia.
- Jerkass Woobie: Space Ghost, especially in episodes like “The Justice Hole”.
- Hilarious in Hindsight: Craig McCracken beating other Hanna-Barbera animators in a swimsuit contest years before his creation would spawn a show that outlasted all of their projects as well.
- Ho Yay: Bobcat Goldthwait asking Space Ghost if he's pretty and this scene from the episode "Live at the Fillmore".
Space Ghost: Moltar, reach down my pants and get the show budget to pay the bail. |
- There was probably enough of this to warrant its own page on the Ho Yay trope (or at least combined with the other Williams Street cartoons.)
- Memetic Loser: Birdman. Poor, pitiful Birdman!
- Memetic Mutation:
- "You're bringing me down, man!"
- "Uhm... Biiiiiiiiirdman!" *crash* "AAAAAAAAH!"
- Space Ghost playing Sonic & Knuckles.
- "Think of me when you look to the night sky!"
- "No lawyer is gonna tell Space Ghost what to do!"
- "Hello there, Tad... MWAHAHAHAHAHA!"
- "Because... I'm different."
- The cow's rant in "Lovesick."
- "Nobody cares, Moby! Nobody cares! No one..."
- Anything from "Knifin' Around," really. It got to the point where the 2005 Space Ghost miniseries referenced Björk being Space Ghost's wife.
- The fact that Brad Abelle (Chad Ghostal's voice actor) ended up doing a Christian kids' movie after he left the show.
- Narm: Birdman's appearances. Especially when he tries to do the infamous Birdman yell.
- Recycled Script: "Kentucky Nightmare" and "Baffler Meal" are virtually identical in concept (Space Ghost sells out to a fast food company, which injects obnoxious advertising into the show, and Willie Nelson is the guest). However, it's justified in that "Kentucky Nightmare" was intended to replace "Baffler Meal", which the creators never intended to air (but several years later did.)
- Very noticeable during "Baffler Meal", where Willie Nelson only gets 4 or 5 lines, all recycled from "Kentucky Nightmare".
- Seinfeld Is Unfunny: This show was unlike anything else on the air in 1994 and only got more "out there" as the series progressed. Now almost the entire Adult Swim lineup has taken some cues from this show and it's more difficult to see what made it so special.
- The Woobie: Poor Birdman. His wife is leaving him, everyone treats him like shit, and he loses his job. This video's title says it all.
