Basic Trope: Two personalities merged into one whole, gaining the attributes of the other personalities.
- Straight: Alice has a split personality, Betty, which she eventually makes peace with and integrates into a new joint personality, Claire.
- Exaggerated: Alice has 24 split personalities, which are joined into a new joint personality, Zelda.
- Alice's 100 actual soul fragments join and become Zelda.
- Downplayed: Alice's multiple personalities were more like masks or personas, which she eventually integrates into a singular personal identity.
- Justified: The story (actually!) has a therapist who helps Alice through the process.
- Inverted: Alice as a consciousness is split into multiple smaller fragments.
- Subverted: This is what Betty wanted it to look like had happened, she actually pulled a Split Personality Takeover.
- Double Subverted: Which was all a long con by unified personality Claire, who is pretending to be Betty to fool her enemies.
- Parodied: Claire is the unified personality resulting from Alice and Betty, combining all of their worst traits. Claire is so annoying and ineffectual that everyone wants Alice and Betty back, even if it means Betty is out to kill them half the time.
- Zig Zagged: Alice and Betty merge into Claire, except it's actually a fourth, evil personality named Dana in control, only it was a trick by Claire, Or is it?
- Averted: Alice and Betty never merge, though they may make peace with the situation and figure out a way to cohabitate.
- Enforced: The toy executives want to make a new Claire doll, but the producers can't get rid of Alice and Betty's actress.
- Lampshaded: "Who'd have thought that personalities that usually hate each other so much could agree to basically die and reincarnate at the drop of a hat?"
- Invoked: Alice wants to get rid of Betty, so she pretends this is what she wants while reading another means of getting rid of her permanently.
- Exploited: ... which Betty uses to trick Alice into a Split Personality Takeover.
- Defied: Alice and Betty are perfectly happy with the arrangement, and think a unified personality will be a disadvantage.
- Discussed: "We need to get Alice and Betty to talk to each other and reconcile, otherwise they'll kill someone!"
- Conversed: "Alice is like an Apple, and Betty a Banana. Okay on their own, but not so good in the same sandwich. However if you put them in a blender with some honey and you get a delicious smoothie."
- Deconstructed: The resulting unified personality is no less flawed or unhappy than either component personality, perhaps suffering even more now that previously opposed aspects of the split personalities are now carried by the same person. The effects of the unification may even ruin the character as a "person," creating unmeetable expectations.
- The "death" of both Alice and Betty alienates their respective friends from Claire, who see her as an Evil Twin.
- Reconstructed: Claire is able to pick and choose the parts of Alice and Betty that will make up her new identity, in a very literal sense "reconstructing" herself to better be able to face the world. The result is a cohesive, wiser and more stable character that is more than the sum of her parts.
- Claire makes it clear she isn't Alice or Betty, but her own person, and sets about winning friends on her own merits.
- Plotted A Good Waste: The author never explicitly gave Alice a split personality, but instead fed an Alternate Character Interpretation that functioned as one metatextually. The author then later unites the stated and alternate characters into a new one that combines their traits.
- Played For Laughs: After Alice and Betty merge into Claire, she develops schizophrenia.
- Played For Drama: Claire is crushed by the conflicting impulses of Alice and Betty, leading to her entering a Convenient Coma as she undergoes a complete breakdown.
