  • Before making a single edit, Tropedia EXPECTS our site policy and manual of style to be followed. Failure to do so may result in deletion of contributions and blocks of users who refuse to learn to do so. Our policies can be reviewed here.
  • All images MUST now have proper attribution, those who neglect to assign at least the "fair use" licensing to an image may have it deleted. All new pages should use the preloadable templates feature on the edit page to add the appropriate basic page markup. Pages that don't do this will be subject to deletion, with or without explanation.
  • All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples. The Trope workshop specific templates can then be removed and it will be regarded as a regular trope page after being moved to the Main namespace. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.

In 2014, when Disney acquired Star Wars, they announced a full reboot of the EU in preparation for their new Sequel Trilogy. While the old EU, since renamed Star Wars Legends, was produced away from the powers that be at Lucasfilm, all EU content produced following 2014 is, unless outright stated otherwise, considered to be canon.

Tropes used in Star Wars Expanded Universe include:
  • Adaptational Villainy: The Grysk seem to be the local expies of the Yuuzhan Vong but any sympathetic traits that the Vong had has been comprehensively purged.
  • Adaptational Wimp: The Eclipse Super Star Destroyer. In Legends, it had a Death Star-grade superlaser, though only 2/3rds the power of a single beam. Here, it's a standard Super Star Destroyer.
  • Alternate Continuity:
    • The 2020 Holiday Special.
    • Per Word of God, every episode of Star Wars Visions exists in its own universe. Some such as "The Duel", are obviously so, though others seem like they could fit into the main timeline.
  • Ambiguous Situation: The Chosen One prophecy. Unlike the old EU which considered the matter resolved following Return of the Jedi, the new canon is much murkier on who the Chosen One was, what the balance might be and how long it will last. Even Darth Sidious himself, in The Secrets of the Sith sourcebook, admits that he's not sure if Anakin was the Chosen One.
  • Ambiguously Evil: The Chiss Ascendency. Though wishing to defeat the Grysk, they'll do what they must to defeat them. Whether that be allying with the Galactic Empire or setting up an Evil Versus Evil situation between the Empire and the Grysk.
  • Anachronic Order: While there is one singular timeline, it's told very much out of order.
  • Batman Gambit: Operation: Cinder, Palpatine's posthumous contingency. As he predicted, it burnt away the Empire's Punch Clock Villains and those who might pull a Heel Face Turn, letting the First Order rise.
  • Bigger Bad: Most media set following The Phantom Menace casts Palpatine as such.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Used constantly. A victory may be won, but the shadow of Palpatine still looms.
  • Broad Strokes: A lot of material from the old EU, most notably the Darth Plagueis novel, tends to be treated in this manner.
  • Democracy Is Flawed: A recurring sentiment. The Republic will never be perfect, but it's better than Palpatine being an open dictator running a military state.
  • Development Gag: The EU enjoys recycling unused concept art to portray new things.
  • Developing Doomed Characters: The writers, Claudia Gray in particular, have way too much fun fleshing out people who are Doomed by Canon or are Back for the Dead.
  • Glory Days: The High Republic era, two centuries before The Phantom Menace was a golden age for the Jedi and Republic. Anakin Skywalker would have fit in perfectly there.
  • Keystone Army: The Galactic Empire, by design no less. In Palpatine's mind, if the Empire couldn't protect him, it had no business existing. Without him running the show and keeping everyone in line, an Enemy Civil War broke out, while still fighting the New Republic, as several Moffs and warlords wanted the throne.
  • Killed Off for Real: Characters who were major players in the films are liable to be killed off in one sentence of a novel or one comic panel.
  • Loads and Loads of Races: It is Star Wars after all.
  • Magic A Is Magic A: The way that the Jedi and the Sith use the Force is treated like this. That's how they use the Force, but it's by no means the only way to use the Force.
  • Robot War: One might be on the horizon. In the era of the original trilogy and onwards, the droids seem to be a lot more resentful about being a Slave Race than they were in Legends.
  • Space Age Stasis: Averted. Unlike Legends, there is a clear, if slow, progression of technology in the new EU.
  • Starfish Aliens: A few show up such as the Chalhuddan, sentient whales, and the Kakrans, sentient volcanos.
  • Vagueness Is Coming: A marauding species known as the Grysk is hiding out in the Unknown Regions, preparing to strike at the larger galaxy.
  • We ARE Struggling Together!: Many factions want to dethrone Palpatine. Agreeing on how is another matter. It took only days after the establishment of the Empire for rebels to rise up. It took seventeen years after the Empire was established for the Rebel Alliance to come together.
