A Cartoon Network original movie based on Steven Universe, Steven Universe: The Movie premiered on television on September 2nd 2019.
Set two years after the climatic events of Change Your Mind, Steven has finished dismantling the Gem Empire and returns home for some overdue peace and relaxation only for a mysterious new gem to threaten his hard won peace.
As a an epilogue to the series, beware of unmarked spoilers.
Tropes used in Steven Universe: The Movie include:
- Absentee Actor: Susan Egan (Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond) doesn't have a speaking role.
- Ascended Extra: With Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl out of commission, Bismuth takes on the role of Mr. Exposition.
- Bloodless Carnage: Averted. Spinel punches Steven hard enough to draw blood. Though it is justified due to Steven not having his powers restored yet.
- Both Sides Have a Point: Steven points out that if Spinel's memories are restored to her she'll resume to attempting to kill them again only for Peridot points out they'll all dead regardless due to the Injector wiping all of Earth's life resources and they need Spinel's to shut it down.
- The Cameo: Blue Zircon, Yellow Zircon, Topaz, Topaz, and Aquamarine appear in a Homeworld city watching Steven's message.
- Darker and Edgier: The Earth's biosphere will die in about two days and Steven actually bleeds due to losing his Diamond durability.
- Demoted to Extra: Other than the B Team Crystal Gems, Garnet is mostly in her rejuvenated form til the climax of the film after Ruby and Sapphire, also rejuvenated, re-fuse back into her.
- Depending on the Writer: As usual, does the Gem Empire span the Milky Way or several galaxies?
- Evil Costume Switch: Spinel gains a more sinister form that contrast her more previously harmless form.
- Feet First Introduction: Spinel cameos in this manner during Steven's galaxy-wide broadcast.
- Foreshadowing: Pearl, the old attendant to Pink Diamond, clearly recognizes Spinel.
- Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: As Spinel notes, there's really no point to any of her actions and she's hurting people who are totally unconnected to what happened to her.
- Steven applies this to Pink Diamond. She was hurt and abused, but that didn't give her the right to hurt and abuse others.
- Happy Ending Override: Lampshaded constantly. Steven eventually decides that there's no such thing as Happily Ever After as conflicts will always occur.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia: The Crystal Gems, save Steven, are put under this due to Spinel's Rejunvenator. Even Spinel's suffers from it.
- Late Arrival Spoiler: Rose Quartz and Pink Diamond being Two Aliases One Character is treated as an open fact.
- Musical Episode: The whole movie is this.
- Offscreen Villain Dark Matter: It's not quite clear where Spinel got her Rejuvenator and Injector from considering that it's been about a day since she left the Garden.
- Out of Focus: Connie due to being away at space camp.
- Personality Powers: Spinel's Rubber abilities reflects on her sinisterly silly nature.
- Pilot Movie: For Steven Universe: Future.
- Rubber Gem: Spinel's main ability is this.
- Screw the War, We're Partying: Despite Earth's biosphere decaying not fifty feet away from them, Sadie Killer and the Suspects is still holding a concert.
- Shout-Out: The opening narration is very much like a fairy tale movie.
- Sinister Scythe: Spinel's Rejuvenator. One swipe and a Gem is reset to how they emerged.
- Spiritual Successor: To the Adventure Time song "Everything Stays", which Rebecca Sugar wrote. It does summarize a good chunk of the film.
- Time Skip: It's been two years since the parent series.
- The Unreveal: The mysterious chest in Lion's mane was opened in the Time Skip.
- Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz keeps up her record. By abandoning Spinel, she set her once friend on the path of revenge against Earth and the Crystal Gems. Though in Pink's defence, circumstances were such that she couldn't exactly go back for her.
- Wants a Prize For Basic Decency: How have the Diamonds redeemed themselves? Yellow has stopped Hostile Terraforming, Blue has stopped executing people for flimsy reasons, and White has been saying "Please and thank you" to
lowerequal life-forms. Steven gets so fed up by this attitude that he has to give them a prize, Spinel, just to make them go away. - What Happened to the Mouse?: Pumpkin is not seen or mentioned.
