Charlie - USA[]
"My conclusion: Your chances of winning a rematch are below 5%." |
Guile's dead combat buddy as mentioned in his Street Fighter II ending. He was sent to investigate Shadaloo since they were causing corruption in the military. In Alpha 3, he runs into Guile while at Bison's base, they had a short encounter with him before he fled to the Psycho Drive room to recharge his power. When both were ambushed by Bison upon entering said chamber, Charlie held Bison back as the base was exploding, pulling a Heroic Sacrifice while Guile escaped. Of course, they Never Found the Body, so it's possible he may yet still be alive. This may be true due to the recent revelation that he was the one who rescued Abel from the Shadaloo base, but if he was the mercenary commander that Abel referred to in his intro, then he really is dead.
Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa (Street Fighter Alpha series and Marvel vs Capcom, Japanese)
- The Ace: Minus the hamminess, natch.
- Anime Hair: If it wasn't for that one exaggerated forelock...
- Badass
- Continuity Nod: Although generally serious, in Street Fighter Alpha 3, Charlie gained a winquote that paints the fourth wall: "I'm sorry. Are you mad at me? Did I 'tick' you off?" He's referring to "tick throws", a strategy of utilizing throws common to Guile that frustrated opponents to no end in II.
- Doomed by Canon: Since Guile needs his best buddy to stay dead in order to have the motivation to tear out Bison's spinal cords and jam it up his ass, Charlie must die in every ending to keep the universe from going out of whack. This was almost averted in Alpha 3, where Charlie actually survived, but Guile's inclusion in the home ports rectified this "oversight".
- Dub Name Change: Nash in Japan, Charlie everywhere else.
- Foregone Conclusion: He dies in all of his endings, including X-Men vs. Street Fighter. The only exception is Street Fighter Alpha 3, although they "fixed" this "oversight" by having him die again in Guile's ending for the console versions.
- The Glasses Come Off: His fight intro in the Alpha series.
- Glasses Do Nothing
- Good-Looking Privates
- Heroic Sacrifice: Guile's Alpha 3 ending has him staying behind to kill a freshly regenerated Bison and destroy the Psycho Drive. This ending is believed to be canon, with the added twist that Bison, rather than retreating to the Psycho Drive was regenerated by it after being defeated by Ryu, Sagat, Sakura, and Ken.
- Informed Ability: The Sonic Boom (specifically, his variant) was given its name because it's supposed to be able to create a sonic boom, which would result in one Game Breaker of a special move. In gameplay, it's no faster than any of the other projectiles.
- Ki Attacks: Both the Sonic Boom and the Super equivalent, Sonic Break.
- Never Found the Body: Very popular assumption regarding his "death".
- In the UDON's comic adaptation of Street Fighter IV, he saved Abel from the Shadaloo base, meaning he may be Not Quite Dead.
- There's the character relationship chart from the project manager for IV. Translated, it shows that, much like the UDON comics, Charlie was the one who saved Abel. He's probably in hiding somewhere.
- Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping: He, despite being American, has a Japanese accent, because the games didn't have English VAs until the late '90s.
- The Obi-Wan: Charlie taught Guile his signature moves.
- Obi-Wan Moment: Holding off Bison at the end of Alpha 3 to ensure that Bison wouldn't escape the explosion.
- Patriotic Fervor: "You've got talent. Uncle Sam could use you."
- Purely Aesthetic Glasses: The glasses are just for show; Charlie actually has perfect eyesight.
- The Rival: M. Bison.
- Shut UP, Hannibal: To M. Bison in Alpha 3.
- The Stoic
- Sure Why Not: For a while, Charlie has been addressed by fans by the full name "Charlie Nash", a combination of his name in Japan and internationally. Thanks to his dogtags seen in Guile's intro video in IV he's now "Charlie Nash". It was probably done out of convenience, to avoid having to draw two different versions of the same scene with a different name on the dog tag. However, Street Fighter fandom, you're welcome.
- UDON's comics used the "Nash" surname prior to Capcom making it official as well.
- Walking Shirtless Scene
- Worthy Opponent: Taken to ridiculous extremes in the UDON comic book series. He and Guile spar for an entire day, to the point Guile misses his anniversary. The two call it off when neither man can get a one-up on the other and decide a stalemate might be a better use of their time.
- Wrestler in All of Us: Same deal as Guile.
Rose - Italy[]
"A life shrouded in darkness is spent searching for the light..." |
An Italian fortune teller who was actually born from the good half of Bison's soul, which split off from him when Bison removed it. She wields "Soul Power", a pure version of Bison's evil Psycho Power. She confronts Ryu in Alpha 3, warning him about Bison's intent to find a new body. When Bison is killed at the end of Alpha 3, he takes possession of her body so he can wait until he gets a new one. After Bison obtains his new body, Rose is released from his control and seeks to destroy him for good this time.
In V, Rose takes in the teenage Fortune Teller Menat as her apprentice and sends her on a mission to warn fighters about Bison's new plans and other threats. Later, she became playable through DLC.
Voiced by: Yuko Miyamura (Street Fighter Alpha 2), Michiko Neya (Street Fighter Alpha 3), Ai Orikasa (Stret Fighter Alpha the animation), Akeno Watanabe (Street Fighter IV and V), all Japanese; Gina Grad (Street Fighter IV and V, English).
- Anime Hair: At least her SFIV and V appearance makes its shape more discernible.
- Apologetic Attacker
- Attack Reflector: She can reflect or absorb projectiles with her scarf.
- Bathing Beauty: This is one of her hobbies.
- Because Destiny Says So: She believes her fortune telling is infallible. It hasn't been wrong yet, but she will reject any attempt to alter it, for good or ill.
- Big No: In Alpha 2, upon discovering that Bison survived her attempted deathblow.
- Boobs of Steel: Subverted; Rose is quite buxom (third only to C. Viper and R. Mika), but she relies on her Soul Power instead of physical strength.
- Bridal Carry: Has received this treatment both from her arch-nemesis M. Bison and her friend Guy both literally within the same timespan.
- Calling Your Attacks
- Costume Tropes: In the Street Fighter IV series, Rose has various new costumes available as Downloadable Content.
- Bare Your Midriff: Her Mystara robes.
- Cleavage Window: Her Mystara robes.
- Combat Stilettos: All costumes. How she's capable of fighting in those high heels is a mystery.
- Detached Sleeves: Her Alpha gown.
- Fashionable Asymmetry: A bit with her Alpha gown.
- Impossibly Low Neckline: Her gypsy dress and her Alpha gown. Her coat dress is worn like this.
- Impractically Fancy Outfit: Her dresses and high heels are rather impractical for street fighting.
- In the Hood: Her Mystara robes.
- Nice Hat: Her gypsy dress.
- Of Corsets Sexy: Her Alpha gown.
- Pimped-Out Dress: Her Alpha gown, and her gypsy dress.
- Scarf of Asskicking: She can perform various feats with hers, from reflecting or shooting projectiles to electrocution.
- Stocking Filler: Her Alpha gown.
- Crystal Ball
- Curtains Match the Window
- Doomed by Canon: Subverted finally in Super Street Fighter IV, where Guy manages to save her from Bison.
- Doppelganger Attack/Spin: Rose can create illusions of herself, for example during Soul Illusion in the Alpha series.
- Downer Ending: Like Charlie, she never once gets a happy ending in any of her series' appearances.
- The UDON comic subverts this as she's able to keep Bison from taking Cammy's body and holds him in place long enough for Akuma to finish him.
- And thanks to Guy, in Super Street Fighter IV she finally gets something similar to a happy ending.
- Dramatic Wind: Her hair is always being blown, as if perpetually caught by a harsh wind.
- Enemy Without: Inverted. Rose either is, or is possessed by, the good that M. Bison purged from his own soul to gain power.
- Energy Absorption: Soul Reflect can do this.
- Evil Counterpart: Inverted; her origin and power imply that she is Bison's Good Counterpart. While Rose possesses the pure Soul Power, Bison uses the corrupt Psycho Power.
- Everything's Better with Sparkles
- Everything Sounds Sexier In Italian
- Faux Action Girl: Arguably. While she's a very good mentor to Menat, a genuine Badass Adorable, she struggles HARD to get to Bison and fulfill her mission to eliminate him.
- Fighting Your Friend: Rose has decided Ryu is The Chosen One, but he is not strong enough to face Bison/Seth. Her common argument is to kick the crap out of Ryu to prevent him from entering the finals.
- Likewise, Guy tries to stop her from rushing to face Bison because she has seemingly resigned herself to death.
- Finger Wag
- The Force Is Strong with This One
- Foreign Fanservice: She is Italian, y'know.
- Fortune Teller: Of course.
- Grand Theft Me: Rose was possessed by Bison's soul after his death in Alpha 3, though she has no memory of what happened during this period. She was released from his control few before Street Fighter II, and she only vaguely knows that said possession actually happened (as alluded to in IV and teased by this artwork of Rose mysteriously examining a spare cap of Bison's).
- Heroic Sacrifice/Taking You with Me: She's prepared to do this if it's required to stop Bison once and for all, but Guy tells her that "being prepared to die in battle is not the same as offering yourself to death willingly".
- I Don't Want to Die: One of her remarks during her Rival Battle with Guy in SSFIV has Rose sorrowfully proclaiming "I do not wish to die."
- Heroic Spirit: She is on a mission to track down evil forces and stamp them out with her Soul Power.
- Hitbox Dissonance: Much like some of the larger characters (i.e. Sagat, T. Hawk, etc.) or the ones with weapons, Rose's scarf gives her range, but can also be a double-edged sword.
- Hot Gypsy Woman
- I Sense a Disturbance In The Force
- Improbable Weapon User: Enchanting her scarf with Soul Power, Rose makes full use of its versatility.
- Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Being the personification of Bison's discarded goodness, the only way she could become evil is if Bison takes control of her body.
- Ki Attacks: Soul Power seems to be a combination of this and Psychic Powers.
- Kicking Ass in All Her Finery
- Kung Fu Psychic
- Lady of War: Very feminine and graceful but still Badass!
- Lady of Black Magic: That being said, she uses her magical powers rather than weapons.
- Leitmotif: Genoa City Port stage theme.
- Mundane Utility: Averted.
Rose (to Sakura): "Your lucky color? I am sorry, child, but my power doesn't work that way." |
- Mystical Waif: A non-RPG example.
- Won't Work On Me: Her Soul Power and Bison's Psycho Power are two sides of the same coin, equal but opposite. At best, Rose can only hope to temporarily stop Bison.
- Not a Morning Person: She has low blood pressure...
- The Obi-Wan: Considers herself this to Ryu. Street Fighter Alpha: The Movie has her playing the role of Stealth Mentor instead, but her goals are still geared towards helping Ryu stave off the Satsui no Hadou for altruistic purposes.
- The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: She'll battle the other World Warriors for the "privilege" of defeating Bison.
- Our Souls Are Different
- Parental Substitute: Arguably, to Menat.
- Platonic Life Partners - True Companions: What she and Guy are most likely supposed to be. Though considering how their encounters are written, fans can't exactly blamed for shipping them. Ooops, Capcom?
- Power Floats
- Power Glows: Since her technique incorporates Psychic Powers, most of her attacks have glowy effects.
- Power Tattoo: Whenever she's in her fortune telling attire, a lightning bolt can be seen in the middle of her forehead. And no, she didn't crib off of Harry Potter.
- Pstandard Psychic Pstance
- Psychic Powers: Soul Power, thankyouverymuch.
Rose, to Dhalsim: My visions show me from where you will attack before you even move. |
- Purple Eyes
- The Reveal: She's the good part of Bison's soul, which took physical shape. Bison takes advantage of her brief Heroic BSOD to knock her out in Alpha 3.
- Roma: Especially in the UDON comics.
- She's Got Legs
- Shipper on Deck: According to her, Rufus and Candy are destined to be together. She tells him so in her win quote against him in IV, and asks her to treat her well.
- Ship Tease: Rose seems to get a bit of it with Guy. Given their endings in SSFIV and their dialogue during Guy's rival battle with her, it seems almost as if Capcom forgot that Guy is Happily Married to Maki's sister Rena and that Rose isn't necessarily the kind to put romance over duty. See the main entry under "Relationship Writing Fumble" for more details.
- Statuesque Stunner: She's 5' 10" (175 cms. tall) and with long, slender legs she qualifies nicely.
- Tall, Dark and Bishoujo
- Tarot Motifs AND Tarot Troubles
- Theme Naming: Almost all of her special moves begin with the word "soul".
- This Is a Drill: Soul Spiral.
- The Tragic Rose: Very much so.
- Victoria's Secret Compartment
- Weapon of Choice: Rose always wears her scarf to a street fight.
- Weight Woe: A comedic Japan only side comic has her suffering from this after Guy asks her about her weight while having her in a Bridal Carry. Sakura and Karin attempt to help Rose with this but Rose due to the style of training does lose weight but ends up heavier due to muscle training.
- You Gotta Have Purple Hair
Dan - Hong Kong[]
"Behold the glory of Saikyo!" |
Full name Dan Hibiki. The original Joke Character, he is a parody of Art of Fighting protagonists Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia. Essentially Robert (long brown hair tied with a ponytail, with a forelock added for flavor) wearing a Palette Swap of Ryo's outfit (a pink karate gi with a black t-shirt underneath). Dan's father was an unknown martial artist named Go Hibiki who challenged Sagat to a match. Go managed to deprive Sagat of his right eye, but was killed by Sagat in a fit of Unstoppable Rage. Motivated to avenge his father's death, Dan trained under Gouken (Ryu and Ken's mutual master) for a while, but was expelled from his dojo before completing his training when Gouken realized that Dan was motivated by his hatred for Sagat. Returning to Hong Kong, he decided to train himself and develop his own fighting style. After hearing that Sagat was defeated by a "strange Asian man" (Ryu), Dan traveled to Thailand and challenged Sagat to a duel. After defeating Sagat (who supposedly threw the match on purpose out of pity for Dan), Dan decided to promote his fighting style under the name of Saikyo-ryu (the "Strongest style"), befriending Blanka and taking Sakura as his self-appointed student.
- Alternate Company Equivalent: He looks exactly like Art of Fighting's Robert Garcia, but with a pink version of Ryo's uniform. His father, Go Hibiki, is pretty much just a rip-off of Mr. Karate.
- Arrogant Kung Fu Guy: He would be a major case of this, but he's not the genuine article, unless you're that good with him. He has the kanji for "Saikyo" sewn on the back of his gi in IV, as an homage to Akuma. And he does the Shun Goku Satsu at one point in the Street Fighter Legends: Sakura comic... (Not to mention having his own—albeit poor—version of the move: the Otoko Michi.)
- Ascended Extra: His first appearance, prior to Street Fighter Alpha, was in a single piece of artwork as a random Jobber beaten up by Sagat and held by his head. Street Fighter Alpha homages this when you fight Sagat as Ryu in single-player mode.
- Bicep-Polishing Gesture
- Butt Monkey: In Sakura legends appears to be one
- Catch Phrase:
"OYAJI!!!" |
- The Chew Toy
- Family-Unfriendly Death: Up till Udon's Legends series, Go Hibiki's death was more or less Played for Laughs. Then they show the whole, brutal scenario in full. It doesn't help that the company keeps treating Dan like dirt in their following stories.
- Flanderization: The UDON comics make him a downright incompetent fighter, unable to even score a single hit.
- Giant Novelty Check: When he beats Seth in SSFIV:
Dan: That's it! I won! Where's my prize money?! Does it come in a giant check?! |
- Hard Work Hardly Works: Despite years of intense training (those muscles didn't develop themselves!), teenage girls chock full of talent have no problem beating him.
- Head Swap: of Ryu/Ken, but with an added undershirt as well.
- Hot-Blooded
- Informed Flaw: The Gadouken is supposed to feel like a slap. Sure, it might have a comically pitiful range, but it's not that weak.
- Insistent Terminology: Sakura always calls him Dan-san, which makes him feel old (he's apparently a few years older than Ryu and Ken); he always exasperatedly tell her to call him "sensei" instead. Yeah... not gonna happen.
- I Shall Taunt You: Notably, he's the only character in Alpha to be able to taunt infinitely, and he's the only character with two rolling taunts, an aerial taunt (although Dhalsim does gain one of his own eventually), and a crouching taunt. He also has two supers revolving around posing: the first is a long series of taunts while the second turns every single action of his into a taunt.
- Joke Character: The joke character.
- Lethal Joke Character: Despite being intended to be a weak, arrogant wimp, he's pretty lethal in every game if you know how to use him right.
- Magikarp Power: Thanks to several buffs, he is now a viably competitive character in IV.
- Manly Tears: Subverted: while he sheds tears for his fallen dad... They're not very manly.
- Meaningful Name: His full name, when read with the surname first ("Hibiki Dan" or 火引 弾), literally means a "dud bullet", a reference to his short-range projectiles. Hibiki also translates to "echo". Dan is about as loud (and obnoxiously funny) as they get.
- Missed the Call: Literally. In his opening cutscene for Street Fighter IV, Dan believes that he wasn't invited to the original tournament. (Street Fighter II) Blanka remarks that he had tried to call him several times to inform him of the tournament, but the phone was disconnected because Dan hadn't paid his phone bill.
- In the UDON comics, Dan steals Guy's invitation to the Japan qualifier for the World Warrior Tournament, though in this case Guy actually knew and let him because he didn't feel up to it.
- Not So Harmless: S.I.N. of all things, recognizes that Dan has just as much potential to utilize the Satsui No Hadou as Akuma and Ryu.
- Continuity Nod: In the official storyline, Gouken (Ryu & Ken's mentor) kicked Dan out of the dojo because Dan wouldn't give up his desire for revenge.
- Overshadowed by Awesome: When you think of it, Dan Hibiki is actually a pretty good martial artist on his own: he can shoot fire out of his hands! In the real world, he'd be a superhero! It's just that in the Street Fighter universe, everyone who can shoot fire out of their hands is better at doing that than him. And even the Badass Normals of the series overshadow him. Poor guy.
- In Sakura Ganbaru, he's actually a perfectly competent fighter and observant to boot. He just happens to be overshadowed by the awesome, more well known fighters, as well as Sakura's ridiculous potential. To wit, he's perfectly capable of seeing through Ken's injuries (after Ken barely defeats Sakura), despite no one else taking note of his wrecked ribs. And his lecture on how Chi works proves that he has done his homework. He's not bad - he just isn't World Warrior caliber.
- There was once a Brazilian Street Fighter comic which has since been discontinued. One issue had a story featuring Dan, as he sets out to avenge his father's death by Sagat's hands. However, this Dan is a completely serious fighter (plus Badass Biker and Warrior Poet), without a single shred of Joke Character. Of note, said comic came out around the time Street Fighter Alpha 2 was released, and there was few information (if none) on Dan's status as a JC. Oh, and his gi there is white.
- Perpetual Poverty: His storyline in IV describes how he's trying to make money by training students in his style of fighting. Hilarity Ensues.
- Real Men Wear Pink: IV goes into great graphical detail to show that Dan's white Gi ended up getting mixed in with red clothing on laundry day. You can see uneven fading, deepening, and white splotches all over the gi.
- Revenge: His relationship with Sagat, concerning his father's death at Sagat's hand. It is because of this that Sagat realizes that his own war of vengeance with Ryu had him walking down a bad path and lets Dan defeat him so that he may satisfy his revenge and find a new purpose to live.
- Shirtless Scene: He has a shirtless alternate outfit in Super Street Fighter IV.
- Shotoclone: Naturally differentiates himself.
- Small Name, Big Ego: He thinks he's the main character of the series.
- Take That: When several members of Capcom's development team jumped ship to SNK to help make Art of Fighting and other fighting games that would go head-to-head with Street Fighter, Capcom struck back by creating him:
- He's basically Robert Garcia's head grafted onto Ryo Sakazaki's body with Yuri Sakazaki's mannerisms, to the point that Terry and Kasumi, among others, in SNK vs. Capcom SVC Chaos mistake him for Robert, creating a Crowning Moment of Funny when Kasumi doesn't buy it:
Kasumi Todoh: It's useless to feign innocence. Defend yourself! |
- To which he responds with this win quote:
"My name is Dan Hibiki! Dan Hibiki! Dan Hibiki! That's Dan Hibiki! Got it?" |
- His father is Takuma Sakazaki as Mr. Karate.
- In IV, one of his Idle Animations is the Haoh Sho Koh Ken, and he gains the Haoh Gadouken as his second Ultra in SSFIV, an attack so strong that the recoil sends him flying backwards.
- Saikyo-ryuu Karate is a knockoff of Kyokugen Karate, starting off by name (Saikyo = strongest; Kyokugen = extreme limit). The attacks are visually similar (Gadouken = Kou'ou Ken, Dankuukyaku = Hien Shippuu Kyaku, Koryuken = Kohou; Dan even throws his fireballs with one hand) but are ineffectual, as a nod to Art of Fighting, where specials would be useless if the player exhausted their spirit gauge, as well as the incessant taunting, because AOF had this as a method to make said gauge rise back.
- The Hisshou Buraiken is the Ryuko Ranbu, only from a stationary position.
- He sometimes screams "Saikyo-ryuu ougi!" instead of "Kyokugen-ryuu ougi!".
- In the Alpha series, Dan was the only character able to taunt indefinitely, much like his source inspiration.
- He even gains Ryo's "Ora ora!" taunt in IV.
- Finally, his ending in Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter is a parody of the ending to AOF, with Akuma taking the place of Mr. Karate.
- One of his win quotes in Alpha 3:
"I hate the Art of Fighting, but I want to be The King of Fighters!" |
- In several pictures (and even a game or two), his father's appearance mocks that of the masked Mr. Karate from Art of Fighting; where Mr. Karate wears a tengu mask with a red face and a long nose, Go Hibiki's face is actually red and that's his real nose.
- Naturally, SNK retaliated by giving Yuri moves and intros that not only parodied Ryu, Ken, and Sakura, but Chun-Li, Makoto, and Felicia as well. Both companies were willing to bury the hatchet and make fun of themselves in the Capcom vs. SNK series. Specifically, Dan received even more parody attacks. Of note is his Kyuukyoku Tenchi Gadou Zuki in SNK vs. Capcom SVC Chaos, a knock-off of Ryo's Tenchi Haoh Ken which, upon connection, will cause Dan's hand to strain! He'll take time to fix it while the opponent is flying, all the while assuring the player that there's nothing wrong.
- Heck, SVC Chaos is dedicated to cementing his Joke Character status. Notable in which it was SNK Playmore that made the game, the very same company Dan was created to parody.
- Took a Level in Badass: Over the years, he has gone from Joke Character to Lethal Joke Character. Cue Street Fighter IV where he's actually a decent fighter.
- Training Dummy: He fills this role in SFIV.
- Twinkle Smile
- You Killed My Father: Dan wants revenge against Sagat for beating his father Go to death, after Go took Sagat's eye.
Characters debuting in Street Fighter Alpha 2[]
Sakura - Japan[]
"I'll be late for class, but it's okay! A good street fight is worth it!" |
Full name Sakura Kasugano. A seemingly normal Japanese high school girl, Sakura decided to take on street fighting after witnessing her idol Ryu in battle. She uses a self-taught imitation of Ryu's martial art with her own versions of his special techniques. Her primary outfit is a sailor fuku and a white headband similar to Ryu's, as well as red "bloomers" underneath her skirt to avoid any unnecessary wardrobe malfunction. Dan considers Sakura as his student, although she doesn't seem to think much of him.
Voiced by: Yuuko Sasamoto (Street Fighter Alpha saga, Japanese), Misato Fukuen (Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter X Tekken, Japanese); Brittney Harvey (Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter X Tekken, English).
- Adult Child: By Street Fighter IV, and in the end ofSakura Ganbaru.
- Ascended Fangirl: She started to street fight because of her intense fascination with Ryu.
- Scarily enough, in one comic continuity before she started fangirling Ryu, Sakura was a huge fan of E. Honda, the sumo wrestler, and trained herself to be like him. Including lamenting just how much weight she still had to gain. She still respects Honda, as shown in her Sub Boss fight with him in Alpha 3... just not so much.
- Interestingly enough, Chun-Li's hero worship of Ryu in the Street Fighter manga would become the basis for Sakura.
- Badass Adorable
- Bare Your Midriff
- Blood Knight: A really friendly (and possibly even Moe) version.
- Costume Inertia: She's still wearing her seifuku because she considers it to be appropriate fighting attire.
- Cute Bruiser
- Dogged Nice Girl: She not only still really wants Ryu to train her personally, despite him telling her he could not train her as he still had much to learn himself, it is heavily implied that her admiration towards Ryu has developed into full on romantic fellings by the time of SFIV. Yet since fighting is—literally--everything for Ryu, it's obvious that he's not really the type to consider things like romance in the first place.
(When winning against Sagat) "I totally understand your obsession with Ryu. Isn't he just dreamy?" |
- A Day in the Limelight: She's the subject of UDON Comics' first Legends four-issue mini-arcs. Details her life back in Japan after she and Ryu go their separate ways and her over-competitive relationship with Karin.
- Genki Girl
- Go Through Me: In Alpha 3, she takes a full-powered Psycho Crusher to the gut to protect an unconscious Ryu. This and Sagat's appearance snap Ryu outta his Brainwashed and Crazy status.
- Guest Fighter: Appeared in Rival Schools, where its established that she's childhood friends with Hinata and Natsu.
- Hard Work Hardly Works: Sakura taught herself martial arts, special attacks and Ki-based maneuvers by emulating Ryu, possibly after seeing him on TV. Think about that for a second: She learned how to shoot energy blasts from her hands without any formal training.
- This is even lampshaded in the Sakura Ganbaru! manga adaptation, where, in the first few pages, Dan demonstrates his Gadoken and explains the basics of Ki Attacks to Sakura. It takes her less than a minute to perform a complete (albeit still weak) version of the Hadoken, and in no time at all she's using full-power versions of the technique. Seeing this, an outraged Dan pauses for a minute to comment on the absolutely terrifying potential she possesses.
- Hero Worshipper: Her admiration of Ryu was what got her into fighting in the first place.
- Hurricane Kick
- Joke Character: At first, but in Alpha 3 she got a whole bunch of buffs that made her very high tier. She's back to mid-low tier in SFIV.
- Joshikousei: She's a teenager in the Alpha games. In her next appearance, she's officially adult, though she still wears her uniform as her fighting outfit.
- Limited Wardrobe: Whilst not really exceptional all things considered, but her old outfit and new one look a little too similar.
- Loony Fan: Aside from her adoration of Ryu, when we first see her, she's a crazy fan of E. Honda's:
Sakura: "When I grow up, I want to be just like him!" |
- Marilyn Maneuver: Several of her win poses.
- Hachimaki
- Meaningful Name: Her given name means cherry-blossom in Japan, although its officially spelled in hiragana (さくら). Her surname, Kasugano (春日野) means "Sunny Field in Spring".
- Morality Pet: To Ryu, on occasion. The biggest example is her Alpha 3 ending: She stands defiantly in front of Bison to protect Ryu from a fully empowered Bison, but Bison swats her away and approaches to kill her. Ryu then temporarily goes berserk and proceeds to tear Bison a new one.
- Ordinary High School Student
- Passing the Torch: The franchise frequently hints that Sakura is the top candidate of inheriting Ryu's Martial-Art legacy should he ever decide to take an apprentice one day.
- Panty Shot: Avoided by wearing Japanese-style shorts underneath, but apparently, a fan made a request so the creators caved in and introduced a palette-swapped who wore white shorts.
- Plucky Girl: And how.
- The Rival: Karin.
- Satellite Character: Her friend Kei, who became an Ascended Extra in the UDON comics.
- School Uniforms Are the New Black: She engages in many martial arts battles in her school uniform. In IV, when she took a plane to visit Ken, she donned the outfit.
- She's All Grown Up: This is what fans were expecting in IV. It properly happens during her ending in SSFIV.
- She's Got Legs
- Shotoclone
- Spirited Competitor
- Teen Genius: See Hard Work Hardly Works
- Tomboy: To Karin's girly girl.
Evil Ryu - Japan[]
Violence...is who I am! |
When Ryu fought Sagat in the first tournament, he was beaten to the point of near-death. Sagat, already battered from the fight, approached Ryu to deliver the final blow, but at that moment, something awoke within Ryu. That "something" was the Satsui no Hado, and it forced Ryu, against his will, to deliver a cheap-shot Metsu Shoryuken to Sagat, scarring him for life. It then lay dormant withing Ryu until the appearance of Akuma. After that incident, Ryu has had constant battles within himself to keep the evil from taking control, while others have attempted to manipulate his power for their own gains, such as M. Bison and Seth.
In Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, Ryu finally succumbs to the Satsui no Hado after being weakened enough after his fight with a Seth clone. Consumed by evil, he now has a giant hole where his chest once was, coursing with lava and dark, burning energy. He walked the path of Akuma, seeking worthy opponents for a fight to the death, until Gouken confronted him and permanently purged the Satsui no Hado using the Power of Nothingness.
Something of relative importance to note about Evil Ryu is in Japan, this character is called Satsui no Hado ni Mezameta Ryū. This name can be translated a number of ways but to summarize, it basically means "Ryu Succumbed to the Dark Hado" (or "Killing Intent" in some English translations). Notice "evil" is never used because Ryu isn't evil much the same as Akuma is not when using this force. Nothing about this persona is necessarily "villainous", merely being fueled by corrupt desires. Any reference to being evil comes from Capcom USA's translation of his character.
- Badass Back: Both him and "normal" Ryu.
- Battle Aura: The version of Evil Ryu in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition sports one.
- Blood Knight: More so than his regular incarnation. If Ryu put emphasis on the Knight aspect, Evil Ryu definitely focuses on the blood part.
- Body Horror:
- The Super Street Fighter IV version of Evil Ryu seems to have some kind of pulsating orb embedded in his chest. Ryu refers to it as a "heart" of some kind.
- The image that normally appears on a user's gi when they execute the Shun Goku Satsu is now more or less burned onto his skin. This conforms with what happened to Rugal when he drew out Akuma's Satsui no Hado power in Capcom vs. SNK 2, suggesting that in fact all users of this power have this happen to them and the image will brand itself to their body.
- Watch Oni's Ultra technique "Meido Gouhadou" when it hits close range. Not only does it hit the opponent in the chest (where Evil Ryu's "heart" is), the second fireball Oni launches slams into them, and then explodes out of their back (just like it's been burned in Evil Ryu's back).
- Brainwashed and Crazy: More or less the genesis of Evil Ryu as a player character, though he is enslaved to his own bloodlust rather than an outside will.
- Calling Your Attacks
- Canon Immigrant: First appeared in Masahiko Nakahira's Street Fighter Alpha manga adaptation. Although in his case, it's more like a retcon, considering that Evil Ryu was shoehorned into Ryu's fight with Sagat from the original game.
- Characterization Marches On: originally, in the Alpha series, he was just a cockier version of Ryu, always open to state how much of a better fighter he was against his opponents, and of course he had killing intent during the matches but Evil Ryu still looked very focused and calm while at it; in conclusion he still looked less evil than Akuma who isn't exactly evil to begin with. Evil Ryu's comeback in SFIV changed his character quite a lot though, not only his appearance changed but his mannerisms changed too, now he lives up to the Evil in his name instead of the original and tamer Satsui no Hadou ni Mezameta Ryu, Evil Ryu is now a blood thirsty demon, grunts and love for violence included.
- Dangerous Forbidden Technique: The "Satsui no Hadou" state, literally "Surge of Murderous Intent", it's what makes Ryu "Evil". Within that state, two specific moves that fit the trope are the Metsu Shoryuken and Metsu Hadouken.
- Deconstruction: While not as much as Cody, the whole "Evil Ryu scenario" was a slight attempt at this.
- Does Not Like Shoes
- Energy Ball
- Evil Sounds Deep
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: As of Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition, the much more menancing rendering of Evil Ryu, has a big hole shaped scar on his chest.
- Remember the kanji that appears on his back when he performs the Shun Goku Satsu? It is now carved on in Arcade Edition.
- Hurricane Kick
- Hachimaki
- Obviously Evil / Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Right there in the name.
- Playing with Fire: He has surpassed even Ken in his new Evil Ryu persona, as in he is now literally on fire during his matches in SSFIV Arcade Edition.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning
- Shirtless Scene
- Shock and Awe: The Metsu Hadouken in his Capcom vs. SNK 2 incarnation.
- Shoryuken
- Shotoclone: With emphasis on the clone part -he is Ryu after all.
- Super-Powered Evil Side: Of Ryu, of course. He went into a slight Divergent Character Evolution in SSFIV Arcade Edition; his previous incarnations were but a tanned Ryu with a black karate Gi, a few evil taunts and some moves from Akuma's list; now his skin is even more tanned, his hair has shades of red, the eyes are just like Akuma's now, has a constant burning battle aura, a huge scar on his chest to boot, and he can get even more evil during his Ultra Combos in which his whole body goes shadow dark.
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Whereas Ryu gains meaning and purpose in his life from growing as a warrior, the "Evil" side of him simply exists to be as strong as the power of the Satsui no Hadou allows him to be. There is no regard for life, mercy, or honor if he has crossed the line, only combat and bloodlust.
Characters debuting in Street Fighter Alpha 3[]
Karin - Japan[]
"'All you need is victory!' That is the motto of my family!" |
Full name Karin Kanzuki. Extremely wealthy heiress of the Kanzuki Zaibatsu, who enrolled in Sakura's school to "observe the commoners" and find a Worthy Opponent. Despite her status as the Rich Bitch, she's really rather kind, sponsoring R. Mika's wrestling and having a friendly rivalry with Sakura. Her Kanzuki-style martial arts are an amalgamation of various others types.
- Alliterative Name
- Action Girl: The biggest one in the series as of the latest game. Won all her matches in the story mode against very notable Shadaloo soldiers and even other heroes. Arguably the only reason she didn't defeat Bison herself was because the developers wanted Ryu to do it.
- Alpha Bitch: This is very much evidenced in Sakura Ganbaru. The rest of her high school class appear do exactly as she tells them, refering to her as Miss Karin, despite being the same age. Karin, on the other hand, refers to them as "commoners".
- Lovable Alpha Bitch: But she's definately of this variety of Alpha Bitch.
- Badass Adorable
- Badass Normal
- Battle Butler: It's what Ishizaki aspires to be. Naturally, Karin will have none of that.
- Big Fancy House: Amongst other luxurious appointments, the Kanzuki residence includes its own private runway.
- Breast Attack: Delivers a rather brutal full body weight kick to Ibuki's breast in the Unlimited side story Some Wisdom. It's force was enough to knock Ibuki out of a closed car.
- Canon Immigrant: Karin is an import from a Sakura-centric tie-in manga.
- Combat Stilettos: It's hard to notice, but her shoes do have heels.
- Counter Attack
- Cute Bruiser
- Defeat Means Friendship: Inverted with Sakura; she loses her first fight (setting off their rivalry), but after the second fight, in which she was victorious, the two become friends. Played with Ibuki more straight, and Karin even seems to have developed a sort of protectiveness for Ibuki in the time since.
- Depending on the Writer: Karin isn't portrayed nearly as strongly in UDON comics as she is in game. In the fifth game she was invincible only not defeating Bison because that is always up to Ryu. In the UDON comics she goes all out against Ibuki who is implied to be holding back because she doesn't want to fight and both fight evenly, and is the only Street Fighter girl in the Back To School comic who gets her butt handed to her by the opposing Rival Schools girl she faces. She also has to be sitting on the shoulders of male fighters in order to combat Q Bee from Darkstalkers.
- Designated Victim: She was this when it came to battle in the Back To School Special comic getting hypnotized by Yurika and being smacked around while hypnotized, Sakura and especially Ibuki were having much more success.
- Hair Decorations
- Hypnotize the Princess: As she is the most princessy character in the game (despite Elena being a REAL princess) she is temporarily hypnotized in her battle against Yurika from Rival Schools in the Back To School Special comic.
- Fingerless Gloves
- Flanderization: The UDON comics really play up her competitive streak. Case in point: She buys off a hot dog contest so it only her and Sakura, waits till Sakura stuffs herself silly. Then tries to fight her right then and there. If it wasn't for the Rival School cast coming to Sakura's aid, Karin would have surely gotten away with it. And the irony is that Sakura still kicked her butt.
- Her competitiveness was also up-played in the Unlimited side story Some Wisdom where Karin in order to force Ibuki to admit she was superior forced Ibuki into battling her at the very least 10 times in succession, a fight that at one point went into the free way with both fighters going into strangers cars through open windows, and also forcing herself into Ibuki's normal activities just so Ibuki could say what Karin wanted.
- Girly Girl
- Hero Insurance: Don't worry, she'll pay for the wall she destroyed to make an entrance...
- I Am Your Opponent: One of her prefight intros has her butler step in to fight you before she throws a serving tray at him and takes center stage.
- Invincible Heroine: In the games is she ever. She defeated literally everyone and anyone who stepped up to her in Shadow Falls never showing fatigue nor losing her patience. Notably F.A.N.G. who was able to still defeat the so called "Strongest Woman In The World" after Karin pummeled him into submission.
- Much weaker in the UDON comics. She was the only Street Fighter girl who cleanly lost her battle sequence against a Rival Schools girl in the Back To School Special.
- Joshikousei
- Lady of War: In training.
- Meaningful Name: Her given-name (かりん) means "quince" in Japanese. "Karin" is also a rare example of a Japanese name (along with "Naomi") that is coincidently cross-cultural, and used freely in Western (mainly Germanic) countries, where it means "Pure". Her surname "Kanzuki" (神 月) is suitably arrogant in translation and literally means "Moon God/Goddess".
- Her name is sometimes misspelt "Karen" in English-language materials (and by fans), most likely because of the cultural familiarity of that spelling to a US/UK/AUS audience.
- Mukokuseki: Her blonde hair, especially as it's styled in Victorian-era ringlets, makes her look more like an upper-class European than a Japanese school-girl. She has, however, brown eyes.
- Noblewoman's Laugh: Her intro pose.
- Ojou: Of the "type 2" variety.
- Ordinary High School Student
- Out of Focus: She was absent from the series until Capcom Fighting Evolution and Namco X Capcom, and was mentioned in SFIV. She recovered fully in V.
- Princess Curls
- Rich Bitch/Jerk with a Heart of Gold: On the battlefield, she is quite snotty toward her opponents, but she's not above petting the dog every once in a while. During some of the story paths in Alpha 3, she helps out the busty wrestler Rainbow Mika, (she becomes her sponsor after Mika beats her) and eventually makes friends with her rival Sakura after finally defeating her in battle.
- Ryu and Ken: Averted. She and Sakura look the part (Sakura looking similar to Ryu while Karin resembles Ken), which makes it reasonable to expect that they might be an example of this, but their fighting styles are nowhere even close to being similar.
- The Rival: Sakura.
- Screw the Rules, I Have Money: Honorable, if crazy, variation: Her family has a Kill Sat. In her Alpha 3 ending, she organizes it to blast Bison's base from orbit.
- To Be a Master: She fights for the sake of upholding her family's motto of perfection.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly rich girl to Sakura's middle-class tomboy.
R. Mika - Japan[]
"The superstar of the ring... That's what I wanna be!" |
Full name "Rainbow" Mika Nanakawa. Pro wrestler sponsored by Karin Kanzuki who's a huge fan of Zangief. In Street Fighter Alpha 3 she's searching for him in order to finally have a match.
- Ascended Extra: She gets an expanded role in the UDON comic series.
- Ass Kicks You: She has no less than three attacks involving throwing herself ass first at an opponent.
- Boobs of Steel: Possibly subverted because she may not be the strongest female character in the series, but she has the most strength-based attacks.
- Her mentor, Yoko Harmageddon, beats her out in this department considerably. Why did she retire? Back problems.
- Demoted to Extra: Nowadays, she just gets minor cameos. On the other hand, the UDON comics turn her into an Ascended Extra.
- Fan Service: Whatever promotion Mika wrestles for doesn't seem to be too big on covering their lady fighters up.
- Girlish Pigtails
- Hair of Gold
- Hero Worshipper: She joined the tournament in Alpha 3 to get a chance to face off against champion wrestler (who she has an outrageous crush on) Zangief. Basically, she's the Sakura to Zangief's Ryu.
- Impossibly Tacky Clothes: A binding leotard complete with heart motifs where her nipples should be, frilly knickers and a frilly neck-line complete the look.
- Large Ham
- Leotard of Power: Her costume looks more like something that came out from Hugh Hefner's mind. As Maki puts it:
"You deserve to win just for wearing that insane costume!" |
- Loony Fan: For Zangief. She takes this to levels that are frankly very worrying, and that's without getting into the fact that she wants to ride him like a rollercoaster.
- Now she has her own fan - El Fuerte.
- Masked Luchador: She's a wrestler and she wears a mask alright...
- Mukokuseki: Mika's Japanese nationality contrasts strongly with her unmistakably fair, caucasian-like complexion, blonde hair and blue eyes. She's the series most extreme example, especially as it sticks to established phenotypes on the whole.
- Murderous Thighs: Her appropriately named Paradise Hold grab.
- Out of Focus: She hasn't appeared at all since her first appearance.
- Use Your Head: She has a few headbutt attacks, the more memorable being one of her Super combo, Heavenly Dynamite.
- Wide-Eyed Idealist: Wishes nothing more than to be the best female wrestler.
- Yamato Nadeshiko: On the cover of a Japanese magazine called Capcom Secret File, Mika is teamed up with a black haired female wrestler actually named after the trope, who works for the same wrestling organization as Mika. She is sometimes her tag team partner.
Juni and Juli - Germany[]
M.Bison: "Now my pretty dolls... Entertain my guest...! Attack!" |
Two German members of the "Dolls", Bison's Elite Guard of twelve young girls who follow his every command. At the end of Alpha 3, they are released from his control and scattered throughout the world. Some of them end up training in Honda's dojo.
Super Street Fighter IV and especially the Juri-centered OAV change this, showing the Dolls as still being under Bison's thumb. They're involved in a plan to kill Seth alongside the other Dolls, but it fails. Juni is eventually rescued by Cammy and becomes a ward of Delta Red, while Juli is shown in T. Hawk's ending to be under the care of an old couple. (However, this is of doubltful canonocity). The Dolls as a whole get more spotlight in V's Story Mode A Shadow Falls, where they're ultimately released from Bison's control.
- Amazon Brigade
- Awesomeness By Analysis: Juni can scan people's Power Levels with her Stat-O-Vision, sometimes getting errors when it goes OVER NINETY THOUSAND. Also may be disposed to Mega Manning since she apparently gets stronger scanning powerful warriors like Akuma.
- Bodyguard Babes: Most notably, Juli and Juni, who fight you in Bison's steed.
- Boobs of Steel: Juli is noticeably developed for a girl of her age. She also happens to share Cammy's moveset.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: All of them. Only one of the Dolls' past identities is made clear, though. In T.Hawk's story in Alpha 3, Juli is revealed to be T. Hawk's missing friend Julia, who is apparently a member of his tribe as well.
- The girl T. Hawk is searching for was originally meant to be Noembelu, a Native American member of the Dolls whose name comes from November (v being pronounced as a w). When they added T. Hawk to the console ports, instead of making Noembelu into a playable character as well, they simply shoehorned Juli into his in-game story. Noembelu is the one with the tomahawk in this artwork.
- In UDON's Street Fighter Comic Book Adaptation, T. Hawk actually searches for both, Noembelu and Julia, with Julia being the missing daughter of a German doctor who once lived with the Thunderfoot tribe.
- Cloning Blues: Averted. Unlike Cammy, they're not clones. They've just been kidnapped all over the world.
- Combat Stilettos: Somewhat.
- Combination Attack: When fighting together, Juni and Juli have access to Super Combos normally unavailable when they fight individually. Namely the Psycho Roll and the Death Cross Dance.
- Ditto Fighters: They have several moves of Cammy's, because they're all trained under the same Shadaloo program
- Co-Dragons: To Bison in Alpha.
- Dual Mini Bosses: Complete with Combination Attacks.
- Fragile Speedsters
- Good-Looking Privates: If only by a technicality.
- Head Swap: Of Cammy, and in turn, of each other. Their legs are also recolored so that they look like they're wearing full-body suits instead of a leotard like Cammy.
- Lovely Angels: Although there's some slight Les Yay in Juni's ending. Also, take note of how each girl has the other girl as one of their "likes".
- Multiple Choice Past: Juli's relation to T.Hawk, the only thing definite about these two is that they came from the Thunderfoot Tribe, then Julia's relation to Thunder Hawk ranges from being just an fellow Tribemember and possible childhood friend, to being his sister, to finally pulling the breaks at girlfriend status.
- Nice Hat
- Non Dubbed Grunts: They use the same vocal clips as Cammy.
- Out of Focus: They returned for Namco X Capcom and vanished (although they both make cameos in Super SFIV). And then the Dolls themselves are featured in A Shadow Falls and save for März (implied to have died), they're saved.
- Self-Made Orphan: In UDON's comic series, Juni's first mission after being completely brainwashed - return home and kill her parents. (We see her killing her Hot Mom here.) Whether or not the other Dolls typically do this or it was an isolated thing isn't clear.
- Sexy Backless Outfit: All of the Dolls wear an uniform with a nice gap on the back, making the back, aside from the face, the only portion of visible skin in an otherwhise more straight Spy Catsuit.
- Teleport Spam: Juni's Mach Slide.
- Theme Naming: Juni and Juli are German for June and July. The rest of the Dolls, are named after the other months from the year, based on their country of origin. The other non-playable dolls are:
- Enero (January) - Spain
- Février (February) - France
- März (March) - German
- Aprile (April) - Italy, she has a younger brother named Maggio (May), who befriends Rose while searching for her.
- Satsuki (May) - Japan, Satsuki is the archaic Japanese name for May.
- Santamu/Thang-Tam (August) - Vietnam
- Xiayu/Jiuyue (September) - China
- Yanyu/Shiyue (October) - China
- Noembelu/November[2] (November) - Native American
- Decapre/Dekabr (December) - Russia, who looks suspiciously like Cammy, but wears a mask concealing her face. The Udon comics plays upon this fact by making Dekabr into a failed prototype of Cammy, and Decapre's own Story Mode in IV goes by a similar plot.
- Tykebombs
Ingrid - Unknown[]
A character ported over from Capcom Fighting Evolution, Ingrid has a story shrouded in mystery, but essentially, she's from the future. She came back in time to reclaim her power from Bison, who used it as part of the Psycho Drive. With her mission complete, she returns to her time, implying that she meets Ryu in the future. She mentions heading to the year 201X and seeing that Ryu has somehow become a monk.
- Badass Adorable
- Bow Ties Are Cool
- Canon Foreigner
- Elegant Gothic Lolita
- Hair Decorations
- Joshikousei: Surely looks like one.
- Kid From the Future
- Mysterious Woman
- Older Than They Look: Talks like a 70-year-old woman but looks like a teenager.
- Parts Unknown
- Psychic Powers
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Counter-example.
- White-Haired Pretty Girl
- Willfully Weak
Crossover characters from Final Fight[]
Guy - USA[]
"Behold the art of Bushinryu." |
A Japanese American Ninjutsu master dressed in a red ninja outfit and converse shoes. Guy is the 39th successor of the Bushin style of Ninjutsu, a martial arts style dating back to Japan's feudal age, Guy traveled to America to improve his martial art skills and found himself at Metro City, where he befriend fellow fighters Cody and Haggar and assisted the two in their battle against the Mad Gear gang in the original Final Fight. In the Alpha series, it is established that as a practitioner of Bushin Ryu, he is an upholder of the world's balance, and travels the world as a vigilante bringing an end to several criminal organizations. He develops a new form of Bushin Style in the original Alpha, tests his new style against his Master Zeku in Alpha 2, and then find himself involved with Bison and his organization in Alpha 3. He is stated to appear in Super Street Fighter IV. Despite his steadfast devotion to his duty of carrying out justice in the shadows, he surprisingly has a fiancee, Rena, whose sister Maki is Guy's rival for the Bushin Ryu title.
Voiced by: Tetsuya Iwanaga (Street Fighter Alpha saga, Namco vs Capcom), Tsuguo Mogami (Super Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter X Tekken, Japanese); Jason C. Miller (Super Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter X Tekken, English).
- Apologetic Attacker: But only if your name happens to be Cody or Rose.
- Badass
- Badass Back: One of his taunts. Also appears at the end of his Bushin Musou Renge in IV.
- Badass Boast: "Don't worry. Everyone loses to me!" and "There is nothing you can do that I can't counter."
- Several of his "generic" win quotes in IV are like this. Point in case:
Guy: "Bushinryu allows me to pierce the sky and split the earth with my blows!" |
- Badass Creed: Gets a few, most notably in IV. They're usually coupled with a Pre-Ass-Kicking One-Liner, but still.
Guy: "The power of Bushin-ryuu shall be my quill." |
- Black Screen of Death: The Bushin Musou Renge (or Warrior God's Unmatched Reaping); Guy will perform a grab and, if it connects, the screen will darken like in Akuma's Shun Goku Satsu, as the player watch Guy's silhouette pummelling his helpless opponent.
- It's changed up a bit as his Ultra in IV. He grabs his foe, starts pummeling them at Super Speed to the point that he's playing human pinball, and then finally focuses for one last attack (the above trope), with a shakuhachi briefly replacing the BGM. The visual presentation is rather stunning.
- But Not Too Foreign: Given that he's an Asian-looking dude who dresses in ninja fashion and trains Ninjutsu under a Japanese master in Japan, no one would have suspected for him to be American if it wasn't for the information given in his bio in Alpha. His nationality was originally stated to be Japanese in Final Fight, but it seems he became a fully naturalized American for the Alpha series if his original nationality wasn't retconned.
- Casting a Shadow: Arguably. During Guy's Bushin Musou Renge, a shroud of darkness blinds his foes while he pummels them into oblivion
- The Comically Serious: In Namco x Capcom, when Janga from Klonoa Heroes calls him a pain in the ass. Guy's response?
"A pain in the ass? Such things are irrelevant in battle." |
- Delinquents: Believe it or not, he was one before being taken in by Zeku. His training as a Bushin ninja caused Guy to mellow out considerably.
- Detect Evil
- Fighting Your Friend: In Alpha 3 he fights Rose in an attempt to dissuade her from fighting Bison in what will clearly result in Rose's death. Unfortunately, he loses that one. In SSFIV, he tries it again. There's also his two bouts (again, in Alpha 3 and SSFIV) with his somewhat-estranged best friend, Cody, who Guy is trying to redeem. And of course, Maki is trying to defeat him so she can become the next Bushin master.
- Flash Step
- Fragile Speedster: Although a top contender alongside the likes of Chun-Li and Vega, one could argue that he leans towards being a nimble Glass Cannon instead.
- Hand Seals: In one of his taunt from Super IV, he casts a whole bunch of those.
- Highly-Visible Ninja: May be subverted if you choose to play with a black outfit. Also, to go with the color, he's pretty competent as a ninja.
- History Repeats: See "Fighting Your Friend" above.
- Hurricane Kick: His Bushin Senpuukyaku, a technique he used as a Desperation Attack in Final Fight. Due to its diagonal range, it oddly functions more like a Shoryuken than the traditional Tatsumaki Senpuukyaku.
- I Did What I Had to Do: The mindset he adheres to. Realizing that his feelings are inconsequential, Guy adopts an "end justifies the means" mentality.
- Ki Attacks: In Final Fight 3 and Namco x Capcom, Guy can shoot close ranged bursts of yellow Ki. Unlike most characters, who shoot ki as a projectile, Guy uses it as an enhanced punch/finishing move.
- Leitmotif: Taken from the Slums Area of Final Fight, the very first stage of his debut game, in Namco X Capcom, he is given the Bay Area Theme.
- Marilyn Maneuver: His stage in Street Fighter Alpha has two teenage girls talking outside a convenience store. Whenever somebody wins, the Dramatic Wind blows up their skirts, to their embarrassment.
- McNinja: Partly; he's a Japanese-American. So much so, some of the winquotes against him in SSFIV have people not even believing him to be a ninja (Rufus is probably the best example, despite his very stereotypical view of ninjas...).
- Meaningful Name: His name in Japanese is actually Gai (ガイ, which is the kanji for "victorious"), but its usually spelled as "Guy" in English to avoid the obvious mispronunciation. Alternatively, he may have been named after Guy Picciotto, like the other Final Fight characters who are named after rockstars. Both have bangs long enough to cover their eyes.
- Nice Shoes: As opposed to the jika-tabi he wore in Final Fight, Guy switched to sneakers in all subsequent appearances. His change in footwear is explained by him in one of his post-fight quotes from the fourth game.
Guy: "Sneakers are well suited to swift footed techniques!" |
- Ninja: Guy uses more traditional ninjutsu with street fighting influences, while Ibuki uses a ninjutsu style that fits the popular image of one.
- Ornamental Weapon: Guy was the only Final Fight character in the Alpha series to not use a weapon (Hugo doesn't count as he was in III), but he uses
kunaiNinja Blades during cutscenes in Street Fighter IV. He doesn't really need them though. He also carries a sword in his alternate costume based on his Final Fight outfit, which is a reference to how he was the most skilled with a Katana in the original Final Fight. Averted in Final Fight Revenge, where he uses smoke bombs and shuriken. - Perpetual Frowner: There's a rare official art depicting him, Ken, and Ryu in more casual clothes and the poster in Cody's intro (but he still has his angry eyes in both occasions). He is also presumably smiling when Cody decides to assist him in SFA3. Other than that... played straight.
- There's artwork of Guy, Maki, and Rena hanging out. The latter is cheerfully clinging onto Guy's arm, while Guy and Maki are somber. Apparently, not even the presence of his own girlfriend/wife can cheer him up.
- Product Placement: Look at his shoes. See the swoosh?
- Slightly altered in SSFIV (to the point of Lawyer-Friendly Cameo), but the overall design's still there.
- Protectorate: His case for all of Metro City. Who needs Haggar when you have a ninja doing all of the heavy lifting?
- Real Men Eat Meat: Averted. Guy is apparently a vegetarian, although this does call into question all of the recovery items from Final Fight...
Guy (to Hakan): "We ninjas eat traditional vegetarian dishes. I have no use for cooking oil." |
- The Rival: Cody.
- Sodom has a one-sided one with him.
- Ship Tease: See Rose's entry above. It's also easy to misinterpret his relationship with Maki (his sister-in-law) due to her Tsundere-like behavior towards him in Alpha 3. (In reality, what could be seen as Rival Yay is the byproduct of Maki's ambition to become the next Bushin master; if she doesn't defeat Guy, someone else could become the 40th Bushin master. Or she could have an unrequited crush on him, which is doomed because we doubt she'd break Rena's heart.)
- Sophisticated As Hell: His exchange with Bison in Alpha 2 (see above), as well as lines such as "You are so outclassed".
- Speed Echoes: One of his intros in Alpha 3.
- Spell My Name with an "S": His Bushin Musou Renge. Whereas Alpha 3 and SSFIV spell it as the above, he and Sho/Ginzu yell the words "BUSHIN MUSOU RENKA!" in NxC.
- Spinning Piledriver: His Bushin Goraisenpuujin Ultra Combo ends with a rather impressive one. He also gains the Kaiten Izuna Otoshi in IV, an aerial command throw.
- The Stoic: He carries out his duties as a ninja/protector of the world's balance with an almost professional air of detachment. His grim face rarely shows any emotions with the only truly noticeable emotion being occasional shock, such as when he found out what happened to Cody in SFA3 or the funny scene with Ibuki and her mascot in one of the Super IV trailers.
- Not So Stoic: If your name is M. Bison and you're abducting Rose, pray that you do not cross this man on a moonlit night. If your name is Rose, do not appear to be dead.
- In his battle against Cody in Street Fighter Alpha 3. Guy calmly says that he doesn't like interfering in other people's lives and that everything should be left as is... and then...
- Not So Stoic: If your name is M. Bison and you're abducting Rose, pray that you do not cross this man on a moonlit night. If your name is Rose, do not appear to be dead.
"CODY... WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU!!!" |
Ibuki: "Quite a hunk, but the outfit needs to go. You don't look like a ninja at all!" |
- Verbal Tic: In certain games, he ends his sentences with "-de gozaru", like a stereotypical ninja.
- Wall Jumper
- Warrior Poet: Guy is quite insightful when he needs to be.
- Warrior Therapist: In the SFA manga, moments before Guy defeats Satsui no Hadou Ryu, he gives his opponent a speech urging him to control his killing intent WHILE BLOCKING EVERY PUNCH FROM HIS SHUN GOKU SATSU AND COUNTERING THEM.
Cody - USA[]
"I saved a city, saved a girl, but couldn't save myself..." |
Full name Cody Travers (according to Final Fight: Streetwise). An American martial arts expert, specializing in knife fighting, Cody is a born street fighter who became known as the "Hero of Metro City" after rescuing his childhood sweetheart Jessica from the Mad Gear gang in Final Fight. However, he ended up becoming addicted to street fighting and, after breaking up with Jessica, was arrested by old nemesis Edi E. for assaulting Poison. He manages to escape during a jail riot.
He appear again in Super Street Fighter IV, where he's still anti-heroic... but in SF V he has 100% cleaned up his act and Haggar could finally exonerate him for good. Now he has become the new Mayor of Metro City and is doing a pretty good work as such, not unlike Haggar himself.
Voiced by: Koichi Yamadera (Street Fighter Alpha saga, Japanese), Daisuke Kishio (Super Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter X Tekken, Street Fighter V, Japanese); Michael T. Coleman (Super Street Fighter IV, Street Fighter X Tekken, Street Fighter V, English).
- Anti-Hero: At this point he's probably a Type III, with shades of Type II thrown into the mix.
- He's back to full heroism in V
- Badass: An extremely apathetic badass, but a badass nonetheless.
- Badass Normal: In a game where most characters have Ki Attacks, Cody just uses rocks, knives, wrenches, steel pipes and dust.
- Handicapped Badass: He wears those prison cuffs because he wants a challenge, not because he can't take them off.
- Ambadassador: In V. He's not necessarily an Ambassador, more of the mayor of a huge city, but he's a huge badass who's in a civilian position of power.
- Badass in a Nice Suit: In V, complete with an Expository Hairstyle Change
- Blood Knight: Deconstructed, he went to jail for always starting brawls under the slightest provocation despite his connections with Mayor Mike Haggar and he looks obviously bored everytime he fights, presumibly because he doesn't get any satisfaction out of fighting anymore and continues to do so only because he is simply addicted to it. The above quote gives you a good glimpse of how tragic a hero he is. And it takes him a LOT to mildly recover and clean up his act.
- Blow You Away
- Byronic Hero
- Cardboard Prison: This is what the prison in Metro City is to Cody. He always returns, but the fact that it can't hold him is a problem.
- Catch Phrase: "Bingo!" and "Jackpot!" seem to be this. You could also make a case for his very engrishy laugh.
"Ha-haa!" |
- Chained by Fashion: Cody's handcuffs in Alpha 3 and SSFIV which he could easily remove at any time.
- Charles Atlas Superpower: Notably, he can throw a rock with enough force to cancel out a Hadouken, and he can easily escape jail by punching through walls. It makes you wonder why Metro City even bothers keeping Cody locked up.
- Because he always returns to his cell when his business is done?
- Combat Pragmatist: Cody specializes in dirty fighting, such as the use of "foreign objects" (there will always be a knife on the ground when he is in play) and throwing clumps of dirt/rocks into his opponent's eyes.
- In Super Street Fighter IV, his Last Dread Dust Ultra begins with his trademark "kick sand in the eye routine". He then follows up with a wrench-aided bludgeoning, uppercuts them with said wrench, and then winds up and knocks them out of the park... with a metal pipe. Damn.
- In Alpha 3, he could do an attack on wakeup called Bad Spray. In SSFIV, this is replaced by the Zonk Knuckle, a sucker punch. He still has Bad Spray in his arsenal (see his "Unique Attack" list).
- Costume Inertia: In SSFIV, he's still wearing his prison outfit (although it's possible that he was simply caught again (or simply didn't bother to change his outfit). His alternate costume is a modern update of his classic "white shirt & jeans" ensemble, and by the time of Streetwise, he's back to wearing his old outfit, only with a different prison shirt over it.
- In all likelihood, he's still imprisoned. Not so much for the fighting anymore (though starting prison brawls probably doesn't help), but his multiple escape attempts could have greatly extended his sentence.
- According to an interview, they planned on giving back his old Final Fight outfit, but fans preferred the Alpha incarnation so they decided to give him the blue and white stripes.
- In V, he's been exonerated and has become the Mayor of Metro City. As a consequence, he's switched to a Badass in a Nice Suit.
- Darker and Edgier: The transition over to Street Fighter from Final Fight was not what people were expecting, to say the least.
- Deadpan Snarker: Ever since he was jailed.
- Demoted to Extra: In between Final Fight and Street Fighter Alpha 3, he was demoted to background cameos and the occasional mention.
- Dull Surprise: Seems to be his reaction to almost everything these days. Just look at his Oh Crap face in Super when faced with an Ultra.
- Emo: According to Juri. One of his titles is "Emo Brooder".
- Expository Hairstyle Change: In V not only he wears a pretty snazzy suit, but he slicks his hair back.
- Fallen Hero: The man who saved Metro city has fallen far... much too far.
- Heavy Sleeper: A couple of Cody's taunts in Super IV have him yawning, while one has him flat-out taking a nap in the middle of the match. His Game Over animation is basically Cody laying on the floor and falling asleep.
- Honor Before Reason: Fans have accused him of this during the ending of Final Fight. (And still a case of it whether if the story of him being framed is true or not.)
- Hyperspace Arsenal: Cody inexplicably stashes a pipe and an adjustable wrench on his body, usually pulled out from behind his back.
- "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: A more heroic example: Guy believes that there's still a hero somewhere deep enough within Cody. Cody, cynical as he is, doesn't buy it... but despite Cody's denial of being a hero, both of his endings prove otherwise, and V confirms it.
- Invulnerable Knuckles: Subverted. The reason his keeps his hands covered in tape is because of the scars he received from punching through walls.
- Jerkass Facade: Ever since his appearance in the SFA series, he talks about on how he is not a hero anymore, but his stance in fighting the forces of evil is still pretty much the same.
- The Jimmy Hart Version: His theme in SSFIV (based off of the intro to Final Fight, but more urban and gritty) sounds like "Got Money" by Lil Wayne feat. T-Pain.
- Knife Nut: A heroic version. A knife will mysteriously appear on the battlefield in both Alpha 3 and Super IV during Cody's matches, in reference to the original Final Fight, where he was the best character with knives.
- Knight in Sour Armor: With the emphasis on sour. Until V, where he's somewhat less cynical than before after finally turning his life around.
- Knuckle-Cracking: He cracks his knuckles right before his Final Destruction Ultra Combo.
- Never Trust a Trailer: The original trailers for SSFIV depicted Cody facing Chun-Li in his Rival Battle (it'd make sense, considering that she's a cop and he's a escaped convict/vigilante), but it was changed to Guy later in development.
- New Powers as the Plot Demands: When he was introduced into the Street Fighter continuity, Cody was given a move, the Criminal Upper, in which he throws an uppercut with so much force that it releases a multi-hitting tornado.
- Given that the lead character of the franchise is an hobo that throws fire out of his hands, Cody's newfound powers shouldn't come as much more shocking...
- Nietzsche Wannabe: Being in prison does that to you, possibly. More noticeable in Super Street Fighter IV. Just check this pearl he delivers to Dhalsim:
"If your god is real, couldn't he just make it rain on your village?" |
- Nonchalant Dodge: Cody has the unique ability among the street fighters to completely negate the opponent's attacks by dodging them with his V-Ism Yoke ability.
- Not-So-Innocent Whistle: After he wins a fight in Super SFIV.
- Perma-Stubble: Shaving with your hands cuffed together is not really hard when the handcuffs' chain is THAT long.
- Retcon: The original reason for why Cody was absent in the Final Fight series was because he and Jessica went away on vacation. However, in Final Fight Revenge he was framed by the Mad Gear Gang and was sent to jail. In the SFA series, his addiction to fighting, causing him to randomly pick fights with any and everyone is a good enough reason for him to stay in jail.
- The Rival: Guy.
- Tragic Hero: After defeating Belger, Cody just couldn't get away from fighting, causing him to get framed by crooked cop Edi E, then getting framed by another former enemy (Poison), then getting hooked on drugs and breaking up with the girl he saved. Oh, and his ending in Super Street Fighter IV has him willingly returning to jail because that's where he believes he belongs. Fortunately for him, he was fully cleared/exonerated and now he's back to fighting for the good of Metro City as it's very action-oriented mayor.
- Victory Is Boring: With Mad Gear beaten and Metro City saved, Cody's boredom has grown out of his mind; that's the main reason why he has developed the addiction to fighting that eventually got him put in jail.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Guy. Most of the snark comes from Cody, but it's clear that the two are still good friends. Notably, it seems to only Guy can break Cody out of his Jerkass Facade and send him careening at the forces of evil.
- With My Hands Tied: Cody fights in his prison garb and cuffs in Alpha 3 and Super IV, to give himself a challenge.
Maki - Japan[]
"Don't take it so seriously, I didn't!" |
Full name Maki Genryusai. Introduced in Final Fight 2, she is the younger sister of Guy's fiancee Rena and also trained in the art of the Bushin style. She was once the leader of a biker gang during her high school years. After her sister and father are kidnapped by a revived Mad Gear, Maki enlists the help of Mike Haggar and South American swordsman Carlos Miyamoto to rescue them. Afterward, she sets off to search for Guy to challenge him for the Bushin succession.
Voiced by: Miki Nagasawa (Street Fighter Alpha 3, Capcom vs SNK 2)
- Action Girl
- Ascended Extra: Of all the characters introduced in the SNES Final Fight sequels, she was the only one to become playable in this series. She also gets an expanded role in the UDON comic series.
- Biker Babe: She used to be a biker gang leader in the past. Not that you would ever know that without reading it in a manual.
- Boisterous Bruiser: A female example, which will come off as confusing to players of the English versions of Final Fight 2, where she was changed into a peace-loving girl who detested violence.
- Boobs of Steel: She seems to have been rewarded with them in her more recent appearances (according to her bio, she's about equal in terms of cup size with Cammy). Keep in mind that she has a haymaker in her arsenal, as well as a boatload of aerial slams to back her up.
- Canon Immigrant: She's the only character from Final Fight 2 who made a return appearance as a player character.
- Cry Cute: The ending of Final Fight 2, which makes her a Badass Adorable.
- Cute Bruiser and Fragile Speedster: Yes, she's both.
- Delinquents: According to official supplementary material, she used to be a gang leader in high school and still dyes her hair as a tribute to those days.
- Distaff Counterpart: Her moves in Final Fight 2 are very similar to her brother-in-law, with only a few subtle differences. She has a bit more variety in Capcom vs. SNK 2 though. Personality-wise...not so much.
- Highly-Visible Ninja
- Irony: She hates being treated as a Damsel in Distress yet ends up requiring Guy's intervention when she encounters Bison.
- The Ladette
- Lady in Red
- Mukokuseki: Her tumbling locks of blonde hair definitely qualify her for this, although it is stated that she does dye it.
- Nice Shoes: Not as notable as her brother-in-law, but she wears sneakers all the same.
- Ninja
- Out of Focus: Aside from her stint in Alpha 3 and CvS2 and her goal to defeat Guy to become the 40th Bushin master, no mention of Maki (or any of Guy's family, for that matter) has been made since.
- Panty Shot: In the portable versions of Alpha 3, and Capcom vs. SNK 2. Just so you know, they're black.
- Sexy Backless Outfit: Alas, this aspect of her costume didn't make it over to the SF series.
- She's Got Legs
- Simple Staff: A Tonfa to be exact.
- Spin Attack: The Reppukyaku.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: She plays the role of Tomboy to her older sister Rena.
- Tsundere: Classic type 1 (aka "tsuntsun") towards Guy, but in a non-romantic context. She's also quite "deredere" around her sister and father, which is probably why many thought she had a thing for Guy, the only Bushin ninja we've been introduced to (aside from
GenryusaiZeku) who was not family. - Wall Jumper: Of the command input variety; the move (Hassoukyaku) can end in either a kick or a grab.
Sodom - USA[]
"Die job death car?" (Daijobu desu ka? - Are you ok?) |
An American Japanophile decked in a Samurai-like armor and helmet, Sodom was a member of the Mad Gear gang, working as an underground wrestling promoter in a secret ring within Metro City's subway system. After the downfall of the gang in Final Fight, he attempts to revive the Mad Gear gang under his leadership, attempting to recruit his former allies, as well as Japanese sumo wrestlers like E. Honda.
- Anti-Villain: Despite trying to rebuild a gang that terrorized Metro City for years, he isn't precisely evil, especially when compared to the other bad guys of the series. He saves Rolento in the latter's Alpha 3 ending, and seems to have befriended E. Honda after the events of Alpha 2. See "Heroic Sacrifice" below for more.
- Blood Brothers: Him and Rolento, although this is only by Sodom's admission.
- Bowdlerise: Renamed "Katana" in the SNES ports of Final Fight and Alpha 2 due to his name bearing religious references. Not to mention other things...
- Cool Mask/Cool Helmet
- Dual-Wielding
- Dumb Muscle: Although he doesn't tend to show any truly Egregious stupidity.
- Evil Counterpart: He may not be explicitly evil, but he's certainly the flipside to Guy's coin.
- Flanderization: Sodom's misguided fascination with Japanese culture in Final Fight became more of an obsession in the Alpha series, to the point that the Japanese versions of the games has all of his dialogue in broken Japanese.
- Gratuitous Japanese: Being an American samurai, he gets his Japanese pronunciations completely wrong. He didn't even get the character he wrote on his shirt right.
"DIE JOB DEATH CAR!" |
- This is specifically stated as part of his character, and is done on purpose. Sodom is the equivalent of a guy who just really, really likes Kurosawa, and took a class or two.
- Then there's his ending in Alpha, where he decides to rebuild Mad Gear under a different name... which is just the kana equivalent to Mad Gear written in kanji. The others promptly call him out on it.
- This is specifically stated as part of his character, and is done on purpose. Sodom is the equivalent of a guy who just really, really likes Kurosawa, and took a class or two.
- Heroic Sacrifice: In his Alpha 3 ending, he sacrifices himself to stop Bison once and for all. By driving his decorated truck into the Psycho Drive in a kamikaze attack, no less.
- Katanas Are Just Better: In Final Fight and his X-Ism mode in Street Fighter Alpha 3
- Leitmotif: His theme is a combination of the BGMs from both the Warehouse and Metro City Subway Areas.
- McNinja: He tries to be a McSamurai. Whether he means to be a ninja or is actually trying to look like a football samurai is unknown, but whatever it is, he's doing a terrible job at it.
- Sodom is best described as a major japanophile.
- Occidental Otaku
- Out of Focus: His status post-Alpha 3 is unknown.
- Worthy Opponent: Despite his enmity towards Guy for besting him back during the time of Final Fight, he still holds the Bushin ninja in high regard as a fighter.
Rolento - USA[]
"I shall rebuild my empire... ON YOUR FACE!" |
Full name Rolento F. Schugerg. A German-American mercenary, Rolento formerly served the American special forces unit the Red Berets before joining Mad Gear as sub-leader, managing the gang's secret drug plant located at Metro City's Industrial Area in the original Final Fight. After the downfall of the gang, he decided to create a Utopian nation of elite soldiers, hoping to recruit both former allies (Sodom) and adversaries (Guy and Cody), to his cause.
Voiced by: Jin Yamanoi (Street Fighter Alpha, Street Fighter X Tekken, Japanese); Alan Smithe (Street Fighter X Tekken, English).
- Beating a Dead Player: One of his win poses is throwing a grenade at his fallen opponent.
- Blatant Lies: "Me... dictator? Me... insane? Negative! Absolutely negative!"
- Bomb-Throwing Anarchists: He uses grenades in close combat, for crying out loud!
- Colonel Badass
- Even Evil Has Standards: Crazy military man he may be, but he wants people to be able to make their own decisions in his utopia. Which is why he destroys the Psycho Drive rather than claim it for his own.
- Fingerless Gloves
- Fragile Speedster: Somewhat. He has decent defense but takes quick reflexes to master.
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: Mysterious scar on his face. Evil.
- Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Is notably taller than Ibuki, they team together in Street Fighter X Tekken
- Knife Nut
- Leitmotif: The Bay Area theme from Final Fight.
- Nice Hat
- Out of Focus: After Alpha 3 his status is unknown. He did make some appearances in the Capcom vs. Whatever series though, with appearances in the SNK vs. Capcom (Capcom vs. SNK 2 Mark of the Millennium and the Card Fighters subseries) series and Street Fighter X Tekken.
- Razor Floss: In his "Take No Prisoner" Super, he uses lassos his opponent with a wire, then loops it over a hook held by one of his cronies to hang the victim For Massive Damage. Subverted in that it doesn't actually cut the opponent.
- Simple Staff
- Spam Attack: Patriot Circle.
- Spelled My Name With An "O": His name is misspelled "Rolent" in Final Fight 2 and in his Alpha 2 ending.
- Throw Down the Bomblet
- Unnecessary Combat Roll: All the freaking time—they should have called him Roll-ento while they were at it. However, rolling is far from unnecessary for him, since it's actually the basis of his acrobatic combat style.
- Wall Jumper: His Mekong Delta Escape.
