Super Robot Wars Gaiden is the first Original Generation game...EVER.

That said, it was released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1996, and for a SNES game, it featured the best 16-bit graphics ever, mecha drawn to scale (averting the Super-Deformed formula), and had a storyline that made Super Robot Wars 4 look like Fan Fiction. Suffice to say, this is the best Super Robot Wars on the SNES.

The story of Gaiden tells solely on the origins of the entire Masou Kishin cast, and the genesis of the long feud between Masaki Andoh and Shu Shirakawa. The plot is split into two parts: "Part 1" occurs prior to the events of Super Robot Wars 2, while "Part 2" takes place following the end of Super Robot Wars 4. Also, this was the first SRW that could have been released for localization, but it's rather racy, risque dialogue sadly made this a No Export for You. It's also the first SRW to incorporate voice acting.

An Updated Rerelease for the Nintendo DS was out in 2010, under the name Super Robot Wars OG Saga: Masou Kishin - The Lord of Elemental, linking the game up with the rest of the Original Generation series. In October 2011, a Play Station Portable sequel entitled Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Masou Kishin II: Revelation of Evil God was announced, and released on January 12, 2012. To mark the 15th anniversary of the Masou Kishin series, a new Updated Rerelease of the original game will be bundled with Revelation of Evil God, complete with enhanced visuals and extended voice acting.
