Sword of the Stars: The Pit (usually only called The Pit) is a roguelike video game, set in the Sword of the Stars universe. It was first released in 2013 by Kerberos Productions. The initial version was released for Microsoft Windows, but was later released for Linux and OS X too. Subsequent expansions were however Windows only. The last updates were with the Osmium Edition, released in 2016.
There is a wiki: The Pit Wiki.
Tropes used in Sword of the Stars: The Pit include:
- Adorable Abomination: The general aesthetic of the game.
- Awesome but Impractical: The scattergun chews through nearly any enemy or groups of enemies, but also chews through your ammo at staggering speed. It will also destroy usable furniture in the room. Most characters lack the skill needed to properly use it in the beginning too, making for a long and wasteful learning curve.
- Ax Crazy: Crazed humans throw grenades around them. Crazed tarka will shoot at anything with a shotgun.
- Chest Monster: Adaptoids can appear visually as just about any one-square piece of equipment. Better rattle that locker before you try opening it.
- Crowbar Combatant: The crowbar is not only a useful tool to assist in breaking open containers and doing other mechanical work, it's also usable for breaking open monsters of various types.
- Duct Tape for Everything: Duct tape can repair everything... badly.
- Everything Trying to Kill You: At least the beds are safe. Except when it isn't a bed.
- Harder Than Hard: The original game started with Hard and Insane. That wasn't hard enough for some gamers, so Seriously was added with Mind Games.
- Hydra Problem: The large protean will split into two when killed. The medium protean will also split into two when killed. The small protean will luckily just turn into an acidic puddle when killed.
- Killer Rabbit: The Lepuroid will bite you, and bite, and bite, and bite...
- MacGyvering: The crafting system, which is used to create all sorts of practical devices, like lockpicks, purifiers, up to exo armors.
- Mooks Ate My Equipment: Proteans are acidic. They might not hurt you much, relatively speaking, but your equipment is another thing entirely. The lab rats and the scanvenger bots will steal items from you inventory and run away.
- More Dakka: All assault weapons fire several shots per action, and can target several enemies. The Scattergun acts as an multi-fire shotgun.
- Psychic Powers: Introduced with the Mind Games expansion. These are split into eight groups: Empathy, Telekinesis, War Mind, Redaction (basically healing), Manifestation, Mecha Empathy, and Resistance.
- Roguelike: Permadeath, randomized items, and resources that are continually attrited. The messages together with the recipes and crafting system has however come under criticism as un-roguelike since the messages and recipes remain from game to game.
- Sound-Coded for Your Convenience: Doors opening, moving monsters making different sounds, weapons firing, explosions, mutters from crazed people...
- Wolverine Claws: The Adamantium Claws is one of the best melee weapons available. Their description ends with "Bub".
- Zombie Apocalypse: The Xombie Plague forms some of the background story for the game.
