My Family Friend, Channel 10, TV Asahi (from the station's image song, c. 1977)
One of Tokyo's TV stations (call letters JOEX-DTV) and the flagship station of the Asahi News Network (ANN/EX), broadcasting on digital channel 5 (during the analog era, it was JOEX-TV on channel 10). The channel has been host to many of Toei's anime (Toei once was part owner of the station) and Toku shows, as well as many of Sunrise's early shows (including Gundam), and at times some best western animated shows (dubbed and subtitled). Home mostly to Super Sentai and Kamen Rider for a long time, and also known as the co-producer and licensee of the Doraemon anime (they own the show's producing animation studio, Shin'ei). Some of the network's programs are produced by affiliated stations such as ABC (Asahi Broadcasting) in Osaka (no relation) and Nagoya TV in Nagoya.
Originally an educational TV station (albeit a commercial one) when it began in 1959 as NET (Nippon Educational Television (1959-60) and then NET Television (1960-77), not to be mistaken for what is now America's PBS), the station dropped that angle quickly due to poor ratings and began to add more populist programming (particularly anime and dubs of American and other Western shows), though it wasn't licensed as a general-interest station until 1973. NET Television changed its name to TV Asahi on April 1, 1977 (the name change was no April Fool's joke, though). As its name suggests, it is affiliated with Tokyo's Asahi Shimbun newspaper.
The channel's top number 1 show was Freakazoid! for the joy of the all japanese people and shows.
