Rashugal[]
Nachtigal I. Fan[]
Voiced by: Hochu Otsuka (Japanese) and Micheal Sorich (English) |
The king of La Schugall. Described as "a king who reigns like a tyrant", Nachtigal seeks to use the forbidden power of Jin and the Spear of Kresnik to conquer A Jule and the world.
Tropes associated with Nachtigal
- 0% Approval Rating: By the time you face him, most of the people he once had allied with flat out refuse to work for him. The ones who do are only sticking around because they have no choice.
- Authority Equals Asskicking: He was able to block Milla's sword attack with his bare hands and knocks her across the room.
- Beard of Evil: He has a beard and is one of the worst people in the game.
- BFG
- Blonde Guys Are Evil
- Dead Little Sister: She died in a previous war between La Schugall and A Jule, and also happened to be Rowen's fiance.
- Disk One Final Boss: He's set up as the main threat for the party to stop at first. While he is a legitamite threat and does have to be stopped, he's actually a small cog in a much larger machine.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He may be a total Jerkass but Rowen points out that Nachtigal loved his sister dearly and was crushed by her death.
- Evil Old Folks: At 52, he's considerably older than most of the playable cast. And looks a lot older than several other Tales series antagonists as well, on account of not being a Really Seven Hundred Years Old Bishounen.
- Evil Overlord: Looks like one so far due to the fact that he's the king of La Schugall and is described as "a king who rules as a dictator, playing around with the lives of his citizens." Not to mention that Nachtigal is experimenting on his own people to improve the process of the Kresnik Spear sucking out the life energy of everyone around it for power.
- Gratuitous German: His name means Nightingale in German
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice
- Muscles Are Meaningful: The guy is ripped.
- Obviously Evil
- Unwitting Pawn: To Jirand.
- X Marks The Villain
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: After his defeat Jirand orders Celsius to finish the job.
Agria[]
Voiced by: Maaya Sakamoto (Japanese) and Kate Higgins (English) |
A genius technician who works alongside Nachtigal in developing the Spear of Kresnik. Though a gifted user of Spirit Artes, she is vindictive, impulsive and quite crazy.
- Axe Crazy: She's quite clearly not all there in the head.
- Berserk Button: People talking about hard work. Leia doing so kickstarts their antagonistic relationship.
- Cool Sword: With three blades.
- The Dark Chick: A rather good example. She's an emotional center for the villains and the one who contrasts the most with them, as they're usually rather calm and reserved for one reason or another. She, on the other hand...
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Her carrier pigeon, Bobo, whom she's has since he was a chick.
- Expy: Fans have already pointed out the physical similarities between her and Emeraude...
- Distaff Counterpart: ... Although many more seem to be noting how similar her personality is to that of Zagi. That is to say, they're both freaking nuts.
- Flipping the Bird: Does this to Leia as she falls to her death.
- She seems really fond of hand gestures in general. She gives people the pointer finger probably the most, or her sword if she's holding it, and she even gives the group a double thumbs down just before she walks out of a room with the rest of Fourve at one point.
- Hard Work Hardly Works: Seems to be a big believer in this when she counters Leia's statement about getting stronger. The reason for this is because her mother tried her hardest to protect and comfort Agria from the stepfamily's bullying, but in the end she couldn't take it herself and took her own life.
Agria: (to Leia) Work, work, work as hard as that scrawny little body of yours can handle, and you'll still wind up with only two things: jack and squat. |
- The Hyena: She laughs at just about anything. Really, she seems to laugh at things that not even other insane people would laugh at. Overlaps with Evil Laugh and Put the Laughter In Slaughter.
- Lady in Red: Her personality subverts this trope very heavily, however.
- Limp And Axe Crazy: Due to this, you may think she has a bit of a Silly Walk, or it may be just be creepy. Or both.
- She also does this constantly. Even when she's sitting. You almost never see her standing or walking normally aside from the opening.
- The Mole: She's actually one of the Fourve.
- Spoiler Opening: She's seen with Gaius in the opening. She's the first one shown in fact.
- Nightmare Face: So damn many in battle.
- Or rather, all the time. If she's not cycling between a Psychotic Smirk, Slasher Smile, or Nightmare Face, one of her few other expressions is a bored look on her face while she lets her jaw hang open. Yet, it's her legitimately excited and happy face that causes the most chills. Such as when she sees Jude and Milla for the second time. Case in point. (See 00:24)
- Obviously Evil: You mean to say the insane-sounding girl with the creepy murderface is a villain? Who'dathunkit.
- Ojou: According to Rowen she's of the Travis family and her real name is Nadia. However...
- That Man Is Dead: she claims otherwise.
- It also seems like Serious Business, as it's about the only thing anyone ever says to Agria that causes her to stand normally, get a serious expression, and respond without laughs or insults...for about 3 seconds.
- Panty Shot: Aplenty. Her Hi-Ougi even starts with one.
- Playing with Fire
- Rapid-Fire Typing: She actually seemed to be typing normally when we first meet her, but when she gets mad at Jude and Milla, she does this while firing up the Spear of Kresnik.
- Speak Ill of the Dead: At the Xallen Woods Temple, she openly mocks Jiao's Heroic Sacrifice, saying that the Chimeriad's lives belong to Gaius and that he was a fool to give his life for a little girl i.e. Elize. Considering Gaius wholeheartedly respected Jiao's decision, to the point that their final conversation was Gaius thanking Jiao for his services, not to mention Agria said this right in front of Eliza, this easily qualifies as a Kick the Dog moment, and Presa even attempts to stop her before she goes too far.
- This Is Unforgivable!: Her reaction to Jude and Milla beating her on their first encounter.
- She immediately tries to kill them along with herself as the quickest form of revenge.
- Sword Drag: When she pulls out her sword, she essentially just lets it hang on for the ride, so this is a natural effect of a Limp and Livid person running.
- Teens Are Monsters: She's 15 and one of the cruelest characters in the game.
- Token Evil Teammate: While the Chimeriad are villains as it is, Agria stands as the only one who can't even be considered an Anti-Villain, though even she isn't completely without redeeming qualities.
- Token Mini-Moe: She's the youngest antagonist at fifteen.
- Trash Talk: All the time.
- Villain Has a Point: After her death, Leia admits that she does ultimately agree with Agria that trying your hardest isn't always enough, though she's still determined to do so regardless.
- White-Haired Pretty Girl
Gilland[]
One of Nachtigal's underlings. Jiland is a scientist who helped him develop the Spear of Kresnik.
- The Chessmaster: It turns out that he is from a world beyond Liese Maxia called Elenpios. As the leader of Ark Noah, an organisation of people from Elenpois who became stranded on Liese Maxia after an accident, he manipulated Nachtigal into constructing the Spear of Kresnik so that his people could break through the Shell barrier dividing the two worlds. Though he deceived the majority of Ark Noah into believing their only goal was to return home, his true objective was to allow the army of Elenpois to conquer Liese Maxia and plunder their mana supplies.
- The Dragon & The Evil Genius
- Expository Hairstyle Change
- Evil Uncle: He's Alvin's.
- For Science!Smug Snake: For the mastermind behind the Spear of Kresnik and Ark Noah (and thus the plot of two-thirds of the game), he comes off as more of a megalomaniacal Jerkass than anything else. He doesn't even get a Mystic Arte.
- Spell My Name with an "S": Is it "Jiland" or "Jirand"?
- Summon Magic: He's the master of Celsius, an artificial Greater Spirit created by his newly-developed "Origin" magic.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy: With red-tips. Not that "pretty boy" is a phrase you'd ever use to describe him.
Auj Oule[]
King Gaius[]
Voiced by: Ryotaro Okiayu (Japanese) and Travis Willingham (English) |
The ruler of Auj Oule, known as a hero who unified the warring clans of A Jule under his command. He believes that the strong should protect the weak, and only wishes for the prosperity of his people.
- A God Am I: An odd case, as he wants to become one because he feels that the current Maxwell has abandoned the people.
- Anti-Villain: The Well-Intentioned Extremist variant. He's got a vision for the world, and believes that the strong must do everything they can to protect the weak. Thus he opposes the party a few times because they are a threat to his beliefs, but Gaius himself is not evil at all and fights for those who cannot.
- Authority Equals Asskicking: He's not the king of Auj Oule for nothing.
- The Atoner: His sister believes his goals and philosophies stem from his guilt over killing her fiancé.
- Badass Baritone: In the dub, courtesy of Travis Willingham.
- Badass Normal: Gaius's sister Karla reveals that Gaius won the tournament without a Lilium Orb, and he did it WHEN HE WAS TWELVE. Outside of spoilers, he's simply a powerful swordsman with no spirit artes at all and yet is still a One-Man Army.
- Bigger Bad Duumvirate: Together with Musee.
- Black and White Insanity: He has a very narrow moral spectrum, all things considered. The second half of the game shows just how far he's willing to go in pursuit of what he believes is the higher moral path. He comes dangerously close to becoming what he hates. As in Final Boss close.
- Elemental Powers:
- Light'Em Up / Light Is Not Good: Especially given the "demon" theme his attacks seem to have.
- Playing with Fire: His primary one and the one used in his Mystic Arte.
- Fatal Flaw: Short-sightedness. For all his of ambition, charisma and badassery, Gaius failed to account for the reality that he will die, thus meaning his beliefs and motivations will not automatically survive past him. Gaius is still a mortal man, and will one day pass on, and nothing he can do will change the fact that whoever succeeds him will not one hundred percent follow his teachings or beliefs. When Milla points this out, she even asks if Gaius thinks the next guy in line will have the same ideals that he does. The question actually makes Gaius falter for a brief moment, and seems to form several of his motivations during the end game.
- Fireballs: His Mystic Arte is basically a few of these followed by a slash.
- Katanas Are Just Better
- Obviously Evil: Subverted. His outfit just screams "boss fight", but the more you learn about him the less antagonistic he seems. After all, despite being one of the Final Bosses, he was only trying to replace Maxwell so he could have the power to protect others in his stead.
- Samurai
- Shiny Midnight Black
- The Stoic: He doesn't express his emotions well. At first...
- Not So Stoic: ... He eventually becomes very passionate about becoming a god, despite remaining a true-Blue Oni. Also, see "What Do You Mean It's Not Awesome?"
- Sword Beam: Hadoumeppuu returns!
- Team Dad: To all of Auj Oule.
- What Do You Mean It's Not Awesome?: He seems to put a lot of energy into his Mystic Arte for a move that just involves a couple of fireballs and a slash.
- It's not only that. On a visual level, he somehow manages to make the basic Majinken and Shunjinken attacks look epic... and that's not even getting into his Hien Shunrenzan. Basically, Gaius takes the basic Tales moveset and infuses an unnecessarily large amount of energy into it.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: He believes that the strong must protect the weak. And will do anything to adhere to that philosophy. After teaming up with Musee he starts a campaign to completely eradicate Jin from the world because it poses a threat to Liese Maxia. The problem is that Elenpois is reliant upon Jin to survive.
- Worthy Opponent: Jude's intro for the game shows them fighting on a fairly equal footing and the ending indicates his respect for the boy's abilities.
Wingul[]
Voiced by: Hidenobu Kiuchi (Japanese) and Kaiji Tang (English) |
The leader of Gaius' personal lieutenants, the "Fourve". Wingull is Gaius' right-hand man and strategical expert. He is a powerful swordsman in his own right, though in combat he switches to a violent and bloodthirsty persona.
- Badass Long Hair: Whenever he's not fighting.
- Blood Knight: In battle
- Bishonen.
- Cast From HP: Same deal as Elise.
- Child Soldier / Teen Genius: Has been serving by Gaius' side since he was 13, according to the guide book.
- Elemental Powers:
- Expy: In combat, his white hair and all-black outfit give him a passing resemblance to Kadaj. His personality is a million miles away, however.
- The Lancer / The Dragon: It depends on whether or not he's in a scrap. Outside of a fight, he seems much more like the former version of the trope.
- Lightning Bruiser: Of the "hard-hitting speedster" type.
- Hidenobu Kiuchi
- I Am Not Left-Handed / Super Mode: He has a Booster implanted in his head.
- Katanas Are Just Better
- Name's the Same: As a certain Pokémon, hilariously enough
- Organic Technology: He may be the basis for the Booster technology. (The game is a little unclear on whether Wingull is the origin of the technology or merely has a Booster implanted within his head.)
- Power Dyes Your Hair: His hair always shifts from black to white before he enters a battle, due to the use of his Booster.
- Shiny Midnight Black / White-Haired Pretty Boy
- Shout-Out: The garbled language he speaks while in combat is Melnics from Tales of Eternia.
- Undying Loyalty: To Gaius.
Presa[]
Voiced by: Rina Sato (Japanese) and Ali Hillis (English) |
One of Gaius' "Fourve", Presa specialises in information gathering and intelligence. She has a love-hate relationship with Alvin, and is a powerful user of Spirit Artes and summoning magic.
- Boobs of Steel: Inverted. She's the Squishy Wizard among the game's female villains.
- Catgirl
- The Evil Genius: Unlike the other Fourve, she's a little too devious to fill the heroic counterpart's criteria. That's not to say she's necessarily evil, though.
- Fan Service / Les Yay: Why, hello there gratuitous lesbonic groping scene!
- Making a Splash
- Instant Awesome, Just Add Dragons: Her Mystic Arte, which summons two watery ones.
- Meganekko
- Rina Satou
- Rose-Haired Girl
- Sexy Walk
- Spell Book
- The Stoic
- Stripperiffic
- The Vamp: Evokes it, visually. Seems to be more of The Evil Genius in terms of the story.
- Throw the Book At Them
- Unresolved Sexual Tension: With Alvin. They used to date.
Jiao[]
Voiced by: Ryuzaburo Ohtomo (Japanese) and Patrick Seitz (English) |
One of Gaius' "Fourve". Jiao is a calm and empathetic fellow whose bloodline contains the ability to control the "Gate" of monsters, essentially placing them under his command.
- Affably Evil: If he can even be called evil. Jiao is a member of the Chimeriad, but he's the only decently nice out of them, and takes good care of Elize, a sharp contrast to the highly antagonistic relationships Presa, Agria and Wingul have with Alvin, Leia and Rowen, respectively.
- Anti-Villain: Type IV. Everything bad he does is from orders of his superiors, and he even gives Elize advice from time to time.
- Badass Beard
- Big Guy Fatality Syndrome / Heroic Sacrifice
- Big Fun: Something of a subversion. He's the biggest of all the Auj Oule characters and seemingly the least hostile. That doesn't mean he's necessarily jovial, however.
- The Big Guy / The Brute: Like Wingull, he really straddles the line between the two, just like Largo.
- Drop the Hammer
- Dishing Out Dirt
- Expy: Looks like somebody took styling tips from Guan Yu. And then doubled the beardage.
- Mighty Glacier
- One Head Taller: At least one more taller than anybody else. He positively towers over Alvin, the tallest protagonist at about six foot-ish by more than a foot and a half. Again, at least.
- Parental Substitute: To Elise.
Other Characters[]
Ivar[]
Voiced by: Showtaro Morikubo (Japanese) and Orion Acaba (English) |
Milla's personal aide, who has served at her side since she was a baby. Ivar takes enormous pride in his role, even if his enthusiasm far outstrips his intelligence. He quickly develops a rivalry with Jude, incensed that Milla has chosen to travel with Jude over himself.
- Always Someone Better: Deconstructed. Ivar is painfully aware of Jude being this to him, and resents the fact that Jude is allowed to be at Milla's side while he's stuck protecting Nia Khera. In fact, the second fight with him on Jude's route is Ivar attempting to prove once and for all he's better than Jude, and after the fight, he asks Jude why he's always the special one. Jude then points out the flaw in his logic; if he really was special, then Milla wouldn't have died.
- Ambiguously Brown
- Big Ol' Eyebrows: Inverted as his 'brows are more like tiny tufts of hair, but the "over-the-top" use of the trope is still in play.
- Bishounen
- Butt Monkey -> The Chew Toy: His suffering just gets played up, and is exaggerated, for more and more comedy value as time goes by.
- Crazy Jealous Guy
- Comedic Sociopathy / Slapstick: Whenever he appears in a scene, the odds of this happening go up. Usually to him.
- Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass: Looks like an idiot, acts like a bigger idiot, sounds like an even bigger idiot... and yet he's the only story character who isn't a villain nor part of the Six Man Band who has a Mystic Arte. There's also the fact that he climbs up a giant cannon on a moving airship in the middle of a battle with no discernible effort. Also, from the age of 2 he was able to talk with monsters, and even has a wyvern that only listens to him. He's also a decent fighter and Milla praises his skills when she fights him in the arena. Heck, even his first battle is a Wake-Up Call Boss. He'll kill you dead, and quickly, if you haven't mastered Jude's Snap Pivot ability.
- Dishing Out Dirt: His Mystic Arte has shades of this.
- Driven by Envy: His resentment of Jude in a nutshell. He can't stand the fact that Milla allows Jude to travel with her while he's stuck protecting Nia Khera, which ironically results in him disobeying Milla despite his loyalty to her.
- Dual-Wielding: He wields two swords
- Easily Forgiven: He never really gets a comeuppance for firing the Lance of Kresnik. In fact, everyone just seems to forget about his role in activating it, even though it directly causes all the problems in the second half of the game. Downplayed, in that they don't show him any respect, but aside from Milla and, to an extent, Jude, none of them did to begin with..
- Face-Heel Turn: After Milla's death, he turns on the party to prove once and for all he's Jude's superior. Though naturally, you only see this on Jude's route; on Milla's, it happens off-screen.
- The Friend Nobody Likes: Nobody in the main cast likes him. The only person who ever has anything good to say about him is Milla, and even she eventually loses her patience with him.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Towards Jude, whom he envies for stealing Milla's attention away.
- Hypocrite: At one point, Ivar tells Jude that handmaids are made, not appointed, essentially saying that one must prove they're worthy to stand at Milla's side. And yet throughout the whole game, he does nothing to prove that he's worthy of standing at Milla's side, since he keeps causing trouble for her and the others and does very little in the way of actually helping. Jude, on the other hand, tries his best even when he's at a loss and does help Milla many times, to the point that Milla admits she wouldn't be where she is if it wasn't for him.
- Idiot Hero: To say that his fanatical loyalty to Milla causes him to make increasingly questionable decisions throughout the game is very much an understatement.
- If I Can't Have You / Murder the Hypotenuse: Very narrowly averted. Much like Chitose, his rivalry with the new person in his master's life has shades of this but it isn't carried out. He comes damn close when he fires up the Spear of Kresnik, though.
- Jerkass: He's really not a nice person, and even Milla can barely stand him.
- Kill'Em All: He very nearly accomplishes this when he feeds the party to power the Spear of Kresnik.
- The Lancer: To be fair to the kid, there is evidence to suggest that he was this to Milla before she met Jude. Afterwards, he became more like The Load.
- Large Ham: Expect a good dose of scenery chewing whenever Ivar appears on the scene.
- Lawful Stupid: Deconstructed, as his loyalty to Milla doesn't really accomplish anything and just results in his frequent humiliation... until he snaps.
- Loony Fan: You know how you normally meet somebody who's suicidally loyal to a main character in an RPG? Ivar takes that basic idea and runs about eighty-thousand miles with it.
- Made of Iron: Well, what else do you call a guy who breaks his sword off on a rock, has the blade embed itself in his forehead and then pulls it out with minimal injury?
- The Millstone: He constantly causes trouble for the party. Not only does he use the Lance of Kresnik, kickstarting the second half of the game, but he picks a fight with Jude twice (though one of them happens exclusively on Jude's route), both of which are completely unnecessary and do nothing but waste precious time.
- Nightmare Face: His face is positively batshit insane when he goes up against Jude out of jealousy.
- Plucky Comic Relief: Nobody takes him seriously, everything he does is accompanied by cartoonish sound effects...
- Red Oni: To Jude and Milla's Blue.
- Satellite Character: Deconstructed. Ivar has literally no personality outside his devotion to Milla, having served her practically his whole life. Needless to say, news about her apparent death causes him to snap.
- Smug Snake: When he's not causing needless trouble for Milla and the others, he's being an insufferable moron whose ego is big enough to make Milla Face Palm.
- Undying Loyalty: His devotion to Milla drives his very thoughts and actions. Deconstructed as it causes him to make increasingly rash decisions and he has no idea what he should do after her apparent death.
- Unwitting Pawn: He believes that he's doing the right thing by firing up the Spear of Kresnik, as he thinks it will free the spirits. Instead, it just plays right into Jiland's hands.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy: Although he... rather lacks the typical personality.
- Wrong Genre Savvy: The kid acts like a silly Lancer character in a Shonen series; acting like a general buffoon while trying to be endearing to his allies. The poor guy just doesn't seem to "get" what the Tales series is.
Muzét[]
A Greater Spirit that shows up after the Spear of Kresnik is fired. Musee has a whimsical personality and quickly attaches herself to Jude. She was created by the original Maxwell to protect the Shell dividing Liese Maxia and Elenpios. She takes her job a little too seriously and would gladly do anything to ensure the Shell stays in place.
- Bigger Bad Duumvirate: Together with Gaius.
- Establishing Character Moment: The first time she's revealed, she implodes a bunch of airships with a doomball to demonstrate her power.
- Elemental Powers:
- Blow You Away, Dishing Out Dirt, Making a Splash & Playing with Fire: She can be summoned as an arte for a time, and her attacks count as all four elements.
- Casting a Shadow / Gravity Master: Event Horizon, her Mystic Arte.
- Light'Em Up
- Gravity Sucks / Pure Energy: Her doomballs.
- Time Master
- Evil Counterpart: To Milla.
- Gone Horribly Right: She was created to protect the Shell at all costs. When Maxwell agrees to dispel the Shell, she turns against him.
- Knight Templar: In regards to keeping the Shell up.
- Noblewoman's Laugh
- Our Angels Are Different: Physically resembles one. Acts a hell of a lot more like a demon.
- Pet the Dog: You can speak to an old woman who was rescued by Musee years ago on a complete whim, and who Musee continues to stay in touch with.
- Pointy Ears
- Power Floats
- Power Gives You Wings
- Rapunzel Hair
- Red Oni: Inverted in a similar manner to Gaius.
- Smug Snake: Has shades of it.
- Sphere of Destruction: Her primary method of attack.
- Undying Loyalty: To the real Maxwell. The reason she kills innocent people and causes undue carnage to protect the Shell is because she believes Maxwell approves of such actions as part of her assigned mission. She's wrong, and the slow realisation that her loyalty doesn't extend both ways causes her Villainous Breakdown, and her defection to Gaius's side.
- Villainous Breakdown: After being defeated for the first time she cries out to Maxwell, asking him to strike down the party for opposing her mission. He says and does nothing. She freaks out.
