  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Shredder attempting to stab Splinter with a dagger near the end. Was he truly blinded by rage to the fact the he would fall off the rooftop even if he hits Splinter? Or was he pulling a Taking You with Me, knowing full well he will fall and might die and wanting at least Splinter to die with him?
  • And You Thougth It Would Fail: Due to the low popularity and success of both superhero movies and live-action adaptations of cartoons, the first film was turned down by multiple major studios including Universal, Disney, and Paramount (who, ironically, would gain the theatrical film rights for the franchise after Viacom's acquisition of the TMNT franchise in the 2000s), expecting the film to be a massive failure. After the film came out, not only it became the highest-grossing independent film of its time, but was recevied very warmly by audiences and even by Steven Spielebrg himself.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The possibility of Splinter dying hangs over the Turtles in the first film. Splinter did bit the dust in the Mirage comics and the 2012 TV series. To make things worse, while 2012 Splinter was Hamato Yoshi in rat form unlike the movie, he otherwise shared Yoshi's story in the film.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • In the first film, a pre-mutated Splinter scratched the Shredder's face after seeing him murder Hamato Yoshi. This wouldn't be the last superhero comic book film adaptation where an animal reacts to seeing a loved one's murder by scrarching the killer's face as part of their backstory, as Rocket Raccoon did the same in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Of course, Rocket's attack was much more efficient than Splinter's. Plus, Shredder at the end attempting to kill Splinter for his scars and foregoing any common sense (by throwing a dagger at Splinter, even througth he was the sole reason he didn't fell off the rooftop) is oddly prophetic of the High Evolutionary's pursuit of revenge towards Rocket for the same reasons. There's also the fact that both Shredder and the High Evolutionary hide their scars througth masks, througth the H.E.'s at least makes it seem as if nothing happened to him (aside from how stretched it looks).
    • The movie Raph went to see was originally meant to be Tim Burton's Batman, afterwhich he would criticize his costume (while loving the Batmobile). 25 years later, and the Turtles crossed paths with Batman for real multiple times. And, to boot, Raph dosen't really think too highly of the Caped Crusader at first.
