Shown Their Work: Van Adder isn't an original creation for the film, he's a very obscure Spider-Man villain called the Proto-Goblin. How obscure? The character's sole appearance was in an issue of Peter Parker: Spider-Man written in 1999, as someone Norman Osborn tested the Goblin Serum on before he used it himself.
What Could Have Been: The script for Spider-Man 4 which caused Raimi to leave the series and Columbia Pictures opt to simply go for a Continuity Reboot rather than find a new director and cast to continue Raimi's story.
