The Book Of Dust is a trilogy set in the universe of His Dark Materials, by Philip Pullman. The first book, La Belle Sauvage, is set twelve years before the events of HDM and features innkeeper’s son Malcom Polstead and his dæmon Asta.
In the priory over the river from the inn is an important baby, Lyra - the Consistorial Court Of Discipline are after her and so is a man with a hyena-dæmon.
Then there’s a flood and Malcom, Lyra and the girl who washes the dishes in the inn, Alice, take to the river in the titular canoe, trying to protect themselves and Lyra.
