The Laura Bow mysteries contain plenty of shoutouts, both to other Sierra games and to popular culture.

The Colonel's Bequest[]

Sierra references[]

  • When using the toilet, the game will abruptly cut to the outside of the bathroom, with a message saying "What? Did you think this was Leisure Suit Larry?".
  • Attempting to talk to the chickens will tell you "This isn't King's Quest III!"

Popular culture[]

  • Attempting to take a shower will get a silhoutted scene that's an homage to the infamous shower scene from Psycho, with the Have a Nice Death message "Didn't Alfred teach you anything?".
  • Lillian Prune can be seen reading a book in Act III, which turns out to be "Bluebeard".
  • Trying to ask the horse about "Wilbur" results in a reference to Mister Ed, complete with a musical snippet. "A horse is a horse, of course. But Wilbur is just imaginary."

The Dagger of Amon Ra[]

Sierra[]

  • One of the fictitious pyramids in the Egyptian exhibit has in its description a reference to 'Oakhurstia', a reference to Oakhurst.
  • Some references to King's Quest games occur if you attempt to talk to the rats and snakes in the tunnel.
  • The body of King Edward of Daventry, a character from the first King's Quest game, can be found among the various bodies preserved in the Alcoholic Preservation Lab in the museum's basement. A unicorn in another vat is said to be left over from a King's Quest game.

Popular culture[]

  • Many references to pop culture of the 1920's time period abound, such as the boxing match between Tunney and Jack Dempsey, Babe Ruth, and Florenz Ziegfeld.
  • Rocco the taxi driver gives a number of these early on in Act I.
  • Anonymous Bosch (the artist who painted the painting "A Heartwarming Story" featuring skeletons tormenting people in Hell) is clearly a pun variation on Hieronymous Bosch.
  • Examining one of the mummy cases in the Mummy Storage room tells you that it's the mummy case of Itinkisawapuddytat IV, a worshipper of Bastet the Cat Goddess. The name is an obvious shoutout to the catch phrase of Tweety Bird of Looney Tunes.‎‎
