The Duffel Blog is what happen when The Onion is written by a bunch of guys trying to take the piss out of the United States Armed Forces, often in the most dry, deadpan manner ever.
Like The Onion it's possible to mistake this site for a real news site, but even a quick scan of some of the articles should raise some red flags of parody, and even reading one of them will quickly reveal they are about as serious as Encyclopedia Dramatica.
Tropes used in The Duffel Blog include:
- Armed Farces: Every branch of the service gets equal parody.
- Attention Deficit Ooh Shiny: Cats prove to be poor military service animals due to distractions caused by cardboard boxes.
- Asshole Victim: ISIS doesn't seem half bad, the only people they seem to want to kill in the US military are complete shitbags.
- Bigger Is Better: Military prepares to embrace their full bodied warriors and will discontinue "fat shaming".
- Black Comedy Rape: As mentioned in this article about the USMC having a LOT of "taking one for the Corps"
- Nobody Poops: Defied. "Everybody Poops" on USMC reading list.
- North Koreans With Nodongs: Ironically, they seem to have planted 'dongs" and other pornography on military networks as well as being responsible for hacking Sony.
- Poe's Law: The deadpan tone of some of the articles is so dry that unless what they are citing is obviously absurd, it's possible to mistake the article as being actual news.
- Skewed Priorities: Apparently, Bowe Bergdahl's apparent treason to the armed forces is less important than the fact he's making them look bad by having an unkempt looking uniform.
- Transsexualism: Bradley Manning wanting to be a woman is discussed, with male-on-male violators being willing to help him feel like the woman he knows he is.
