"The Glass Slipper" is a 1938 American, animated, comedy, family, fantasy, romance, short film in the Terry Toons series. It is a based on the Cinderella story by Charles Perrault. It was released on October 7, 1938. The story was co-written by John Foster and Paul Terry, and directed by Mannie Davis. It is a modernized take on the story with differences from the original that include Cinderella as a Brooklynite who tells her story of what happened to herself to her friend, Sadie, over the phone; the Fairy Godmother who resembles Mae West; dancers at the ball doing the jitterbug; and the prince, who resembles Harpo Marx.
Tropes used in The Glass Slipper (animation) include:
- Cardiovascular Love: Little hearts appear and pop constantly upon the prince laying eyes on the Fairy Godmother.
- Comically Cross-Eyed: The prince appears to be this at times.
- Cute Mute: The Harpo Marx-looking prince is silent like the real Harpo Marx was, but instead of speaking, he sometimes honks a horn to communicate.
- Faint in Shock: Cinderella does this when one of her stepsisters tells her she'll never go to the ball and when the prince ends up with the Fairy Godmother instead of her.
- The stepsisters faint at seeing Cinderella at the ball.
- Fanfare: What is played before the prince enters the room.
- Green-Eyed Monster: Cinderella's stepsisters actually turn green with envy briefly when they see she's arrived at the ball in a fanciful get-up.
- Iris Out: Each of the two of these is used for Cinderella and Sadie when they're talking to each other on the phone rather than featuring the usual Split-Screen Phone Call approach.
- Maniac Tongue: The prince is shown to have his tongue sticking out his mouth at times.
- Meta Twist: This Cinderella comically doesn't quite get the happily ever after as one might have anticipated. The Mae West-looking Fairy Godmother is the owner of the slipper.
- Nap-Inducing Speak: Sadie falls asleep in the middle of Cinderella's story.
- Panty Shot: The lace-trimmed part of Cinderella's white panties are shown when she slightly lifts her raggedy dress and pulls the sides of it as she tells the fairy godmother what size she'd like for her new dress to wear to the ball. Her panties are shown in full without the trim when the prince and the grand duke arrive at her house in search of the slipper's owner; she has another when she faints the second time.
- Cinderella wears white, ruffled pantaloons under her ball gown, as do the stepsisters, and the heavyset woman dancing with the triplets.
- Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: Cinderella.
- Staircase Tumble: The prince manages to walk down the stairs without incident at first. But then after a few steps, he trips and goes rolling down it to the bottom, into some guards, and gets rolled up in a rug.
