- Count Drake spent a significant portion of his life as The Atoner, due to his becoming one of the biggest slave traders of his nation in order to pay off his family debts and then marrying an abolitionist who unknowingly showed him exactly what the consequences of his choices were. In the third book, he gets into a discussion with Kylar about what it is that Kylar sees as the Night Angel, whether it is sin, evil, crimes, or what have you. At the end of the conversation, Kylar tells him that whatever it is he sees, he doesn't see any of it when he looks at Drake. Drake's soul is totally clean.
