These are...

The Untold Tales of the Vocaloids
—from the game's intro screen
Cquote2

The Untold Tales of the Vocaloids is a Vocaloid fangame created by Sirlothus01. It was made with RPG Maker XP and its full version was released in 2019.

Iroha City is a city that some may consider too peaceful and thus boring. However, Kagamine Rin, a member of the ever-famous Vocaloids doesn't think so and she always finds a way to make her everyday life exciting, while also spending time with fellow Vocaloids. But one day, a strange occurrence hurls them into a dangerous quest to save the world, which requires them to grow up and overcome their fears.

This game is pretty much your standard Eastern-style RPG, but with Vocaloid characters (and the UTAU Kasane Teto, but nobody bothers to correct that) as the protagonists. This game is fully playable even with the minimum knowledge of Vocaloids (and an UTAU), but some of the references might flew over the head for those not accustomed with the Vocaloid (and UTAU) lore.

You can download the game from its official site here. The game itself is complete, but still receive updates occasionally.

Tropes used in The Untold Tales of the Vocaloids include:
  • A Homeowner is You: there are several vacant houses you can buy at various settlements in the game. They are pretty much functions as a free Inn, though you can spend more money to hire a maid and to decorate the house. When a house is fully decorated, a chest containing a picture and a collectible item for a Vocaloid will spawn.
  • The Alcoholic: Meiko. She even tries to make Len drink much to Rin's annoyance.
  • All in a Row: this game opt to use this. Interestingly, this can be exploited in the fight against the Lord of Water as your party leader (in this case Miku) can walk through other characters, but his underlings cannot, so one could make the other members a temporary "wall" to prevent the underlings from touching Miku (getting caught 5 times and it's an instant game over) so she can collect the needed woods to make a bridge to go close to him and cast Ice Spike to attack.
  • Arbitrary Headcount Limit: You can only bring up to 4 characters at once in fights. This quickly become a glaring case of Gameplay and Story Segregation as the Vocaloids alone are composed from 8 people and (almost) always travel together, let alone extra characters.
  • The Atoner: Remilia is the one that causes the destruction of Kazehi long ago. She regrets this and joined Sirloth and his army to assist them to protect the world.
  • Badass Normal: Meiko has no offensive spell, yet she can beat up enemies just fine. She's also the only one who can deals physical damage to all enemies with her later skills.
  • Bare Your Midriff: Many of the outfits for the female Vocaloids exposes their tummy.
  • Beach Episode: After dealing with Onigami, the Vocaloids decided to take a break and visit to Mizuki Beach, except Gumi who has important personal business and Teto who, being a chimera, couldn't stand water. Unfortunately for them, it ended up as a case of Busman's Holiday because they're suddenly attacked by a swarm of giant squids.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: Every one of the Lords except Sirloth. They want to destroy the world because they getting tired of the evils committed by Humanity.
  • Blatant Lies: Rin claimed to be "Magical Rin-Rin-chan" when transforms into her Chimera Form to convince the kids at Iroha Old District that she will save their friend.
  • Bonus Dungeon: the Land of Illusion. It's filled with stronger version of previous bosses from the main story.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: From a teenager NPC in the Iroha Library:

The books in here sure are fascinating! Science, drama, fantasy, ecchi stuff, they got everything!

Cquote2

  • Build Like an Egyptian: The desert area has two large pyramids located northeast and northwest of Desert Town. The northeast pyramid contains a Holy Altar.
  • Brother-Sister Team: Rin and Len, if the player put the later into the active party.
  • Can't Drop the Hero: When you're asked to form a party, Rin is pretty much required. Exceptions do happen however at certain times in the plot where she's unavailable for a reason or another.
  • Chekhov's Gun: You may notice a mysterious, circular marking at Iroha Outskirts, the Desert Town, Cerulon Town, and South Forest. The circular things are teleporters; the one in Iroha connects to Desert Town's and Cerulan Town's, while the one in South Forest connects to the Void.
  • City with No Name: the Desert Town. Also the Human Village in Gensokyo.
  • Collection Sidequest: In your journey, you can find and collect food items that are associated with each Vocaloids (Orange for Rin; Banana for Len; Leek for Miku; Baguette for Teto; Ice Cream for Kaito; Sake for Meiko; Frozen Tuna for Luka; and Carrot for Gumi). Collect 10 of each items, and talk to one of the merchants in Iroha City to trade for the ultimate weapon for the specific Vocaloid. How these items could be found at seemingly implausible places is a mystery.
    • There's also the Picture Album, which contains various pieces of fanarts found in various places in the game.
    • The Ancient Teredon Relics, which can be exchanged for various best equipment in the game except the weapons.
  • Cool Crown: Miku's Vintage outfit has a small hoop crown.
  • Commonplace Rare: You need to collect some dirt from several chests to extinguish flames that blocks your way in Hell.
  • Crossover: the second act largely took place in the land of Gensokyo, the place where Touhou Project characters live.
  • Cute Monster Girl: Kasane Teto is a young chimera that can easily passes for a cute Japanese girl, even in her Chimera Form. Rin also counts after she turned into a half-chimera.
  • Cuteness Overload: Rin gets one when Shizuka calls her onee-chan. Everyone else must restrain her from becoming too crazy.
  • Dark is Not Evil: Sirloth is a Black Knight that looks menacing and wield the power of Darkness magic, but he is firmly aligned to the side of Good. Remilia the Scarlet Witch is a vampire and acts unpredictable at best, but she's still on the Vocaloids' side.
  • Duel Boss: You must fight the Hell Hound with only Teto to obtain one of the material needed to awaken her Chimera Form. It has high attack and loves to spam Venom, potentially become That One Boss.
    • The boss battle in Whispering Cave also this with Rin.
    • The fight with Remilia, also with Rin.
  • Easter Egg: the jukebox in Iroha's McDonald can be interacted with to play a Vocaloid song. The songs are Miku's "World is Mine", Rin's "Kodoku no Hate", and Teto's "Fukkireta".
  • Elemental Powers: Barring Meiko, the Vocaloids has power with certain elemental affinity:
  • Emergency Transformation: Teto tranfers her chimaera powers to Rin when the later was in the brink of death when they almost lost a fight against Faris and the other Lords. This allows Rin to transform into a half-chimaera that then defeats Faris and she can switch between her new form and her human form at will. Said transfers was done by Teto kisses her on the lips.
  • Eldritch Location: the Void. It's a dimension so alien to human mind that even Sirloth, the Lord of Darkness, couldn't fully comprehend it.
  • Face Heel Turn: Every Lords other than Sirloth experiences this after losing faith to Humanity
  • Fighting Your Friend: In the Freezing Labyrinth, your party fights Rin (with her Reactor outfit) out of misunderstanding. Be careful as she packs the powerful Mass Light that hits the entire party for a ton of damage.
  • Find the Cure: after narrowly buried alive within the Whispering Cave's collapse and reunited with others, Rin suddenly fell ill out of exhaustion. Miku and the Vocaloids then must travel to Belany Town and find a special medicine for treat her illness.
  • Fire and Brimstone Hell: The Vocaloid enters a dimension which is basically Hell to stop Garon from summoning Onigami. You can find various equpments fro Kaito that named "[Something] of Hell" or "Hell's [Something].
  • First Town: Iroha City. It also has the eighth and final Holy Altar, located at the Graveyard
  • Flower in Her Hair: Rin's Cheerful Candy outfit, Miku's Vintage and White One Piece outfit, and Luka's Chiffon Dress outfit all have flower ornaments on their hair.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: The Kagamines are portrayed as this. Rin is the lazy sister who would rather die than doing her homework, wakes up late, and generally acts impulsive, while her brother Len is a child prodigy who leaves no homework undone and more thoughtful in any situation.
  • Foreign Exchange Student: Luka is one, based from the status screen. This is most likely refers to the fact that Luka is the first Japanese Vocaloid who's capable of singing in English.
  • Hell Hound : The Hell Dogs fits the Hunter/Portent type. These are bloodthirsty, undead dogs who attacks in big number. Expect to kill a handful of them as the antagonists often sic a pack of them to your party. There's a boss enemy called "Hell Hound", but it ironically isn't this trope.
  • Holy Hand Grenade: Kaito's Cross Cut skill deals high damage against Undead enemies. It's particularly effective against Onigami.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: The boss fight against Sirloth in the Belamy Mountain.
  • Ho Yay: The way Teto transfer her chimera power to Rin during the fight against Faris is performed with a kiss. Later in the game, Rin wonder if Teto was avoiding her because she was jealous of Remilia's aggressive approach to her.
    • Remilia likes to tease Rin, at one point she goes quite far to undress her in the midnight. However, for someone who's familiar enough with Touhou, this can instead become Fan Disservice as Remilia's canon age is around 500 years old compared to Rin's 14.
  • Improbable Weapon User: Some of the characters use items not normally expected for combat:
    • Rin, Gumi, dan Luka respectively uses microphones, flutes, and tambourines. There are also more unusual weapons for Rin, including a potato peeler and books.
    • Miku uses hand fans to attack and one of her weapons is a sheet of (used) paper. Justified as Miku is a dancer in this game.
    • Len becomes this if you equip him with the Bass Guitar.
    • Shizuka has her parasol as her weapon of choice
  • Informed Equipment: Averted by Rin's Reactor outfit, Teto's and Rin's Chimera Forms, and of course the swimwears, which have their own sprites. Their other outfits played this straight.
    • Teto's Chimera Form used to play this straight before the July 19th 2020 update.
  • Laughing Mad: Played for Laughs. When the Vocaloid found out that the bus to Iroha City left them in Mizuki Beach, Meiko starts to laugh out loud as she's convincing herself the bus would return. Then Miku delivers this gem:

She's unwilling to accept reality...

  • Leaked Experience: The EXP system in this game has a very nice iteration of this trope. Everyone gains the exact same amount of EXP and have the same level-up rate, so everyone are in the same level everytime. This also brought some side effects though: you may stick with Rin and three other characters and equip them with the best equipment you can find, while also leaves the other Vocaloids sitting duck and still using their highly-outdated equipment.
  • Light is Not Good: Faris, the Lord of Light, has an angelic theme on his appearance and white is his primary color. He is, however, the leader of the Lords who wants to destroy the world. His domain is protected by creatures of light and have angelic appearance as well.
  • Mega Twintails: Teto, complete with spiral drill-like shape. Rin's Reactor outfit supports the straight variant.
  • Missing Main Character: Miku automatically assume the role of leader when Rin is unavailable for whatever reason.
  • Monster Town: One of the Holy Altars is located in a town with friendly monsters, but human aren't allowed to enter unless they're accompanied by a monster species. You can enter after the party figure out how to make Teto transform into her chimaera form.
  • Mummy: there's a two types of mummies encountered in the pyramids; the first one is the ordinary mummy people most likely think of, and then there's the female mummies that looks stripperific.
  • Noodle Incident: We never told why Rin was once grounded in the potato storage room.
    • Near the end of the game's first act, Meiko claimed that Rin once made everyone spent a whole day to search a monkey that she allegedly saw in the school. Rin retorted that at least she didn't try to sell the monkey to buy alcohol.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: Sirloth's design looks like a standard fantasy RPG character, but since he's surrounded by anime-like characters, he inevitably falls into this. Note that his profile is the only one who uses a fully 2D artwork.
    • Among the Vocaloids, Gumi is this. Everyone else uses a rendered picture of their 3D models from the Project Diva series, Gumi instead uses TDA model commonly used in MikuMikuDance simply because she isn't playable in the games. Rin and Teto's Chimera Forms also uses TDA models, albeit a modified one.
    • The playable characters that is not a Vocaloid also uses models from MikuMikuDance.
  • One-Time Dungeon: The Whispering Cave. It's collapsed due to a powerful earthquake that happened in the plot. Any items inside you hadn't picked up before is effectively lost.
  • Optional Party Member: You can recruit Shizuka, a young girl, after you rescued her in the Iroha Old Subway. She has the highest Intelligence stat in the game even surpassing Miku, and she also comes with the Master Intelligence Ring that boost MP by 60% and increasing Intelligence.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • If only Sirloth bothers to explain that he's actually trying to protect the Holy Altars from Garon, then the entire conflict between his followers and the Vocaloids could be avoided.
    • If Rin just told Miku and co. that her 'betrayal' was because she realised that they all being manipulated by Garon to interfere Sirloth from protecting the Altars, they doesn't need to fight and the Altar at the Freezing Labyrinth wouldn't be destroyed.
  • Rare Candy: The consumable Seeds that boost the respective stat of a Vocaloid. There's also the Hot Chocolate Souffle that permanently increases everyone's Intelligence by 10.
  • Rapunzel Hair: Miku and Luka.
  • Reptiles Are Abhorrent: There's simply too many kinds of enemy reptiles to be listed here. Teto's Eagle Claw skill is particularly effective against snakes.
  • Required Party Member: Teto is required in your active party in order to enter the Vampire City. You also must bring Remilia along when trying to go into Gensokyo. Sirloth is required for the second half of Act 2
  • Saving the World: what was started by a zombie attack at the Vocaloids' school became an epic journey to stop the awakening of Onigashima. After that, the focus changed to stop Faris and the other Lords from destroying the world with the Magic Mirror.
  • Scenery Gorn: the main part of Calery Town after it's destroyed by a bomb ain't pretty. And then it was overrun by hostile zombies.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Onigami, It's said that the Holy Altars was made to prevent any attempts on summoning it.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Kaito's Classic outfit.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Most of the weapons you can get for trading a character's item in Iroha City refers to a specific Vocaloid song related to the character (Rin's is "Microphone of Meltdown," for an example).
    • One of the book that you can read in Iroha Library is a book titled "Book of Da Wae."
Cquote1
What an... interesting... book.
—Rin, after reading the book
Cquote2

    • When you talk to the Sage in the West Forest, he said, "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this!" as he give you the Holy Stick, a weapon for Rin. This is despite the fact your other party members is literally lined up behind her. Rin even lampshades it.
    • One of the equipment you can find in the Iroha Old Subway is a book named "Mirai Nikki."
  • Snowlem: These are enemies found at the icy region of the game.
  • Stalker with a Crush: there's a fanboy that was so obsessed with Rin that he's pacing back-and-forth in the front of Rin's house and become the first enemy you fight. This eventually become a Running Gag as the same guy would appear again in various places and you must beat him again.
    • A particularly funny encounter with him happens when you arrive to Cerulon Town for the first time, where your party was led by Miku because Rin was unavailable because of a spoilerific reason. The stalker became ecstatic to see Rin again, only to be disappointed that his crush isn't there. Despite of him leaving them alone though, Miku decided to kick his sorry ass anyway.
  • Standard Status Effects:
    • Venom deals Damage Over Time.
    • Paralysis makes the victim unable to act for a long time.
    • Sleep puts the victim to sleep and lose their turn. This effect wears off after a while or until the victim got attacked
    • Mute prevents the victim to use a skill. Particularly annoying when your current active party relies more on magic or said victim is Rin who has the Heal skill.
    • Confuse make the victim physically attacks their allies. If the victim is Kaito, Len, or Meiko whom all had high Strength stat and they act first before can be treated, the poor soul that they target is most likely dead.
  • Summon Magic: Two of non-Vocaloid characters have this. Rin and Len can summon Odin and Gennie respectively around Level 65.
  • Timed Mission: When you take control of Rin in the Whisper Cave, after beating the boss you have 3 minutes to escape before the cave completely collapses. The timer still runs even in battles, so the best option (especially because Rin goes solo in this part) is just run for your life.
  • Too Many Belts: Luka's default outfit has two belt worn at odd angles. Miku, Rin, and Teto has an useless belt hanging on the left side of their waist, while Len has one on the right side.
  • The Unfought: Every other evil Lords beside Faris. Though you technically still fight them, it's still not a proper Boss Battle. What's more irritating that they all died when Onigami suddenly broke free from the Mirror and decided to kill them all first before trying to destroy the world.
  • Useless Useful Spell: Unfortunately most of your characters' spells that only causes status effect/debuff at enemies end up as this.
    • Len's and Kaito's spells also this because they're run off from their low Intelligence stat. Even considering the fact Mass Earth and Mass Water respectively are their only way to hit all enemies at once, they cost a lot of MP.
  • Vague Age: the game never specified the Vocaloids' age unless one would assuming from their canon age (Miku's 16; Rin and Len are both 14; Teto's 15 in human years; Luka's 20; but then again, this isn't confirmed in the context of this game). It's only mentioned they're going on the same high school. This is especially blatant to Luka, Kaito, and Meiko who looks more like adults than the rest.
  • We Cannot Go Without You: Averted. As long as the rest of the party still could fight, the game resumes even if Rin/the party's current leader dies.
  • We Used to Be Friends: Turned out all of the Lords were childhood friends entrusted to protect the world with their elemental powers. Over the time however, their experience with the evil in humanity leaves the other Lords disillusioned and decided to just destroy everything. Sirloth objects and warns them to keep on the side of Justice, but his efforts instead turned all of them against him.
  • When Trees Attack: the Howling Marsh area has two tree monsters who guards the stones required to open up the Sun Temple containing a Holy Altar.
  • Who Wears Short Shorts?: Rin wears this in her default outfit. Several of the female Vocaloids' outfits has this.
  • Zettai Ryouki: Miku and Teto in their default outfit. Several of the female Vocaloids' outfits has this.
