Some or all of these characters need descriptions. A list of tropes is not a description.

Characters from Toonami include:

TOM[]

TOM 5, circa 2016

A Beta Droid, TOM (short for Toonami Operations Module) is the host of Toonami and the custodian of The Absolution (most of the time.) Originating as a pudgy preteen, TOM went thru several different bodies of increasing ages and personalities; but he is, at his core, a kind-hearted, wisecracking rebel defying society.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • Action Hero: TOM always has clever ways to get himself and Sara out of danger. Examples include hacking into The Absolution's systems to clear it of Swayzak's infection in Trapped in Hyperspace (represented as a virtual ship blasting the crap out of Swayzak and his "friends") and assembling a freaking robot army in The Forge.
  • Back From the Dead: TOM has the miraculous ability to cheat death, simply because he has friends who care about him and always build him new bodies. For example, Sara transferred TOM's consciousness to new bodies in The Intruder and The Forge, and the Dronomeks rebuilt TOM when Orcelot Rex destroyed him in Endgame.
  • Badass: When you consider he's survived being eaten by a Blob Monster, being Brainwashed and Crazy, and being freakin' torn apart by a brutal, hulking monster, you realize he's a force to be reckoned with.
  • Badass Baritone: When Steve Blum started voicing him. TOM 2 sounded more teenager-like, but by TOM 3, he sounded pretty adult-ish. By TOM 4, he sounded like an old-timer.
  • Berserk Button: Do not harm Sara in any way, or TOM will come for you.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: In level 5 of the Trapped in Hyperspace game, TOM is infected by Swayzak and becomes evil. Surprisingly, this does not require TOM being upgraded to a new body (possibly due to his consciousness being altered), instead opting for a Fantastic Voyage Plot.
  • Cool Shades: His visored helmet looks freaking awesome.
  • Dumb Muscle: TOM 3 wasn't so bright, even though his muscles made it seem like he was a superhero. For example, in the promo for Pokémon: The First Movie, he claims "Don't fool with Mother Nature," even though he's a robot living on a spaceship.
  • Heroic Build: As TOM 3, he was more muscular and enjoyed lifting weights during his spare time (as one of the bumpers on the block showed.)
  • Nice Guy: TOM just wants to be a good friend to everyone he comes across, except if they're trying to cause harm to him or Sara.
  • Perverse Sexual Lust: For Serena Tsukino from Sailor Moon.
  • Socially Awkward Hero: While TOM 2 may have seemed badass to a legion of kids watching TV, the truth is was he was a high school loser elsewhere. His interactions with Sara prove this.
  • Sunglasses At Night: TOM's visored helmet isn't just there to look cool. There is an optical camera inside it, which allows him to see. He can even see in the dark.
  • Surfer Dude: The British Toonami's version of TOM, voiced by Christian Stevenson, had a gnarly twang to his voice. Considering Christian Stevenson was previously a host on CNX (the channel Toonami replaced)'s Trailer Park, a show about extreme sports and other teenage boy culture, they probably thought it was a good idea. Funnily enough, Steven Blum had no idea Christian Stevenson existed, and probably vice-versa.
  • True Companions: He and Sara are almost like family; Sara lampshading it when she thanks TOM for rescuing her at the end of Trapped in Hyperspace, and TOM undoing Sara's fried morality at the end of Countdown by telling her how much he loves her.

Sara[]

The navigator, pilot, and captain of The Absolution, as well as TOM's AI companion.

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Normally averted, except for in Countdown, where she gets struck by lightning and tries to destroy all organic life.
  • Action Girl: She was upgraded to a holographic body to better defend The Absolution. Even before this, she and a Clyde shrunk themselves and went into the body of TOM to save him from Swayzak.
  • Anime Hair: Sara 2 had spiked anime style hair in a ponytail.
  • Creepy Monotone: As Future Sara.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Her snark is at the same level as TOM's, especially in her two game reviews from the TOM 2 era. (In the second, she locks TOM out to avoid having him act completely dismissive towards the game.)
  • Face-Heel Turn: Infamously in the third Adult Swim TIE, Countdown, after she is struck by lightning from an unknown nebula, frying her morality. Thankfully, TOM uses The Power of Love to undo the damage.
  • Foe Yay: She's been paired with Swayzak alot.
  • Foil: The serious, straight woman to TOM's awkward bumbling.
  • Gamer Chick: She likes RPGs such as Morrowind and Lost Kingdoms, and she also did a review of Rez featuring only herself (and Swayzak.)
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Sara 4 has a purple and white colour palette.
  • Oracular Head: Sara 1 and 3 were just a head on a screen. Future Sara technically counts, but some of her body is shown too.
  • Our Fairies Are Different: Sara 4 is a magical AI pixie, complete with wings.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Future Sara has a pair of glowing red eyes instead of Sara 4's usual white.
  • Smart People Speak the Queen's English: At least when Sally Timms and Samantha Robson voiced her in the Cartoon Network era. The Adult Swim era (Dana Swanson) sounds American.
  • Spaceship Girl: She controls The Absolution. Gone Up to Eleven in Countdown, where a lightning strike has her become the ship.
  • Straight Man: The straight woman to TOM's idiot, at least in the early days.
  • The Nth Doctor: She has gone thru four forms over the years: Sara 1 and 2 were from the Cartoon Network era, and Sara 3 and 4 were from the Adult Swim era. Sara 1 and 3 were just a head on a screen, and Sara 2 and 4 had a body (except for Future Sara, who only showed up on The Vindication's screen, due to the lightning strike destroying her body.)
  • True Companions: Her and TOM are inseparable; when she got struck by lightning and became evil, TOM undid the whole caboodle with a speech telling her he'd always be there for her.
  • What an Idiot!: Did Sara even know the nebula (which wasn't on any of the charts) could potentially be dangerous? She should've gotten out of the way like TOM did when it fired lightning! She's supposed to be the smartest out of all the characters, but she sure is dumb.
  • Women Are Wiser: She's the straight man to TOM's bumbling dorkiness, mostly in the TOM 2 era.

Swayzak[]

Caption

The main antagonist of the third TIE, Trapped in Hyperspace. He's a computer virus that invades The Absolution's system and causes it to spiral towards Earth. Despite only being seen once, many people have expanded on him.

Tropes exhibited by this character include:
  • AI Is a Crapshoot: He's a sentient, evil computer virus.
  • Anti-Hero: Most recent fanon takes of him are straying away from his villainous portrayal and veering towards this instead. Helps that he was possibly originally intended to be one.
  • Arc Villain: Of Trapped in Hyperspace. He was probably intended to be a one-off villain, but many fans have wanted him to return.
  • Badass: Looking like the devil, invading thousands of systems solely for fun, and being the only villain to gain the upper hand on TOM (even if it were only online and for a short while?) Sign me right up!!
  • Badass Boast: "Yours is only one of thousands of systems I've invaded!" Sadly, TOM's response to him is true; his was the system that beat him.
  • Boisterous Weakling: Swayzak seems all scary and evil, but his overconfidence and his anger issues eventually become his downfall when TOM invokes a Villainous Breakdown to throw off his game.
  • Bounty Hunter: A recent fan take on Swayzak has him reimagined as a bounty hunter who only targets The Absolution because his master told him the ship had a processor worth a fortune. This was inspired by Jango Fett from Star Wars, who was a major anti-hero of 2002, and had a New Zealander accent, similar to Swayzak in the Trapped in Hyperspace game.
  • Computer Virus: A personified example; you'd expect him to look more like an actual virus than... Emperor Zurg.
  • Contagious AI: A sentient, malevolent computer virus that manages to invade The Absolution, several other ships in the area, the DOKs, and TOM (in the online game.)
  • Deadpan Snarker: More prominent in fan works than in actual canon, but he still has semblances of this trait when he says "Good luck, hero" and throws his hand to the side, almost as if he's mocking TOM.
  • Evil Is Hammy: Bob Amaral was having some fun with the character, evident in his evil laughs.
  • Evil Gloating: He gloats alot; every episode has him saying something about how he will never be stopped.
  • Evil Laugh: He belts out a few impressive villainous laughs throughout the TIE while taunting TOM.
  • Evil Overlord: Has all the clichés of an early '00s one down (thin waist, constant evil laughter, over-the-topness.)
  • Evil Sounds Deep: He has a reverberated/chorused deep voice, being a Cybervillain character.
  • Expy: Of Megabyte from ReBoot, one of Toonami's most fondly-remembered shows, as well as Zurg (look at his hand motions in his first scene and compare to one of Zurg's most well-known moments.)
  • Eyes of Gold: He has yellow eyes that underscore his evilness.
  • Foe Yay: Swayzak and Sara are a very popular ship; well, recently, that is. Swayzak has been rewritten by many a fan to accomodate this.
  • For the Evulz: He admits to taking over ships simply for fun. This reason is probably why many don't like Swayzak compared to the Intruder. (At least with the Intruder, it was a mindless blob preying on its food source.)
  • Glowing Eyes of Doom: They're actually vents that emit yellow light.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: He is shown to be easily angered at things. This is how TOM defeats him...
  • Henshin Hero: Recent fanworks portray him as having numerous transformations, similar to another hellish anti-hero.
  • Hey, It's That Voice!: Bob Amaral, who voiced Emperor Zurg in the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command video game. Their voices sound very similar.
  • Jerkass: TOM even calls him a jerk in Episode 3.
  • Lean and Mean: His full body in the online game had a pinched-in waist and legs thin enough to be almost sticks.
  • Light Is Not Good: He's dark orange, in contrast to his dark, evil nature.
  • Pride: He thinks he can't be stopped, but of course, being for children, this isn't true.
  • Satan: Resembles the devil enough to carry a pitchfork in the Trapped in Hyperspace online game.
  • Talking Lightbulb: Just like Zurg, his mouth lights up to match his speech.
