Trope Workshop Guidelines

A character who has a deep and strong attachment to their car or other vehicle. It needs not be literal love, but the emotional connection should be stronger than with other material possessions.

The attachment can express itself in different ways. It can be through taking excellent care of the vehicle over a long period. It can be a strong emotional response to any misfortune that comes to it. It can be through calling it endearing things, or through showing a sensual appreciation.

  • Lorelei in the Good Intentions series by Elliott Kay does not care much for material possessions. She makes an exception for her Lexus convertible, as evidenced by her rampage through the Seattle criminal world when it was stolen in "Trust".
  • Crowley and the Bentley in Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. He took care of it for more than sixty years, and was determined to finish his journey in it. It is made even more explicit in the TV series.
  • Nym and the lovingly upgraded golf cart cum battle wagon in The Rats, the Bats, and the Ugly by Dave Freer and Eric Flint.
  • Rose Marshall in Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire, where her old love Gary takes the form of a car after death. In the song "Pretty Little Dead Girl", it is stated that Rose loved her car in life too.

Live-Action TV[]

  • The TV adaptation of Good Omens makes this explicit, by playing Queen's "I'm in Love with My Car" as Crowley drives through the burning M25.
