This trope was originally name "Nakama". The troper who created that page was apparently a fan of One Piece. The term comes from a fansub group that claimed that the Japanese term was untranslatable into English. It's actually means "comrades"[1]. It was a missed opportunity to use the term "shipmates" when translating the term into English.
The reason it stuck around for while was because of some rabid One Piece fans that thought an English word couldn't capture the "true" meaning of namaka. It didn't help that the mods thought it was good term to use a trope name.[2] There are other Japanese terms that also from bad translations like "Keikaku", "Hentai", or "Ecchi".
