VRMMOs (short for Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online) are Fictional Video Games that use virtual reality to play online with multiple players. Most use some form of VR Console where players can control characters through their minds, but some use controllers. Such games are usually RPGs, where combat is obligatory but some play to other video game genres. These MMOs can act as an alternate setting from the real world and play an essential part in the story. Games like these are found in a futuristic or Sci-Fi setting due to using advance technology to simulate reality.

Anime and Manga

  • Infinite Dendrogram is a VRMMORPG where players experience a world that can simulate everything found in reality. Players become Masters, where each has a unique ability called an Embryo but has other gameplay features found in RPGs. Each Master can have a unique experience that differs from each player.
  • NewWorld Online or NWO from BOFURI is a popular VRMMO where it's structured with different floors with divergent environments. When players first start the game, their preferred weapon affects player characters' build and skills related to the armament.
  • The New Gate was a VRMMORPG that trapped players until they defeated the final boss. If they died in the game, then they die in real life. This lasted until the strongest player, Shin, defeated the monster and everyone was able to log off. However, Shin stayed in the game until everyone logged out, then he was sent to a world similar to the game, except 500 years have passed.
  • Shangri-La Frontier or S.L.F is a new VR game with over thirty million accounts after launching in a year.  Players can gain skills through in-game actions that reflect their stats. It is set in a medieval fantasy world with a story tied to the Unique Monsters, World Bosses that are the most difficult monsters to beat.
  • Lost Saga from Yureka is a virtual reality MMO developed by one man. Its virtual shows many advanced features from its NPCs and monsters to what players can achieve in-game through their classes, skills, equipment, etc.
  • In Overlord, YGGDRASIL was a DMMO-RPG (Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) that lasted from its release of 2126 AD to 2138 AD. It featured extensive customization for player characters and more. While it was popular, it still had problems where most information about the virtual world was undiscovered. This feature was its most significant advantage yet weakness as it gave players the chance to discover the unknown.
  • Gunpla Battle Nexus Online from Gundam Build Divers is a full-immersion virtual reality game where players known as Divers pilot their Gunplas in the game. Divers can create their avatars while also use special pilot skills from different Gundam series. Gunpla can also be customized but that needs to be customized outside of the game.
  • One More Free Life Online from A Certain Middle-aged Man's VRMMO Log is the first VR Game of its kind where it boasts a built-in world filled with vibrant NPCs and monsters. It also uses a skill system over jobs where players can choose and develop them as they play the game.
  • Sword Art Online or SAO is the first VRMMORPG released to 10,000 people that can experience a realistic environment through a NerveGear console. There is no magic in the game, but players can fight with Sword Skills, plus it features other RPG mechanics. Unfortunately, the 10,000 people are trapped in the game where they can't log off unless they beat the MMO but dying in the game; die in real life.
    • ALfheim Online is another VRMMORPG set in a fantasy world with nine races of fairies who carry the primary goal of gett on top of the World Tree. Every character can fly but for a limited time, while the different races have their own unique traits and abilities.
    • Gun Gale Online, aka GGO, is an FPS VRMMO on a post-apocalyptic Earth where people have returned from their space ships. Players explore the ruins that are filled with automated machines and mutants with various guns. They can use two types, which are optical and live-ammunition, but some weapons aren't firearms.

  • Ready Player One's The OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation) is an MMOSG (Massively Multiplayer Online Simulation Game) that evolved into a virtual reality due to its popularity that is globally networked and became part of humanity's daily routine. It basically replaced the internet and have access to a public library of every form of media made along with knowledge and culture of human civilization. Players can get experience and items by going on quest or interacting with NPCs. There are some who even get rare, unique, and powerful artifacts by killing bosses from these quests.

It even uses AIs for the NPCs that can act to programming automatically. The game's setting is in a world under attack by monsters, but adventurers (which are players represent) fight these monsters with their skills and magic.
  • In Digimon World 3, Digimon Online is a popular MMO where people can partner up with the creatures. The players become trapped in the game after an error prevents them from logging out.Cyberspace EDEN from Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth is a Web service that people can access virtually. It is used for general services like business activities, shopping, and meeting people from different countries.

  • Terrain of Magical Expertise or TOME is VRMMO developed by Netfking Software with the purpose of combat gaming and social networking. People of all ages, gender, and race can create a character from customization to make theri character unique such as making one from a scanned image. They can also chose from 6 classes along with Powers that could be anything from Boxes to Mythology.

  • Satisfy from Overgeared is a popular and highly rated VRMMO developed by the S.A. Group and regulated by a supercomputer called Morpheus. The game's system is made to allow Users to discover and develop themselves, which means the many players' actions determine what happens in the virtual world.
  • Royal Road from The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor is an open-world VR game where players can unite all the continents under one allegiance then becomes the Emperor. This also means gaining prize money, which is 10% of Unicorn Corporation's (Royal Road's owners) considerable revenue.
  • Lucid Adventure from Hardcore Leveling Warrior is a virtual reality that be played in people's dreams. The game is an infinite sandbox that leaves players with many possibilities which lead to it gained a huge following along with playing while you sleep helps.
