  • Base Breaker: Fans are divided about Lovelace; is she a badass Anti-Hero who is understandably embittered by what happened to her, or is she an unlikable Jerkass?
  • Iron Woobie:
    • Hera. She's bitterly aware of the fact that she's a disposable slave treated like little more than a tool by Goddard Futuristics, she's reprogrammed twice by people she thought were her friends to kill the rest of the crew, is temporarily lobotomized by Hilbert which leaves her in constant pain, and to top it all off she's bitterly aware of how much of a liability her constant glitches makes her to the crew. In spite of it all, she continues on and hides her issues with a bubbly facade.
    • Eiffel, who's this as well as a Jerkass Woobie. He struggled with crippling alcoholism that ruined his career, accidentally blinded his daughter and crippled a high-schooler in a drunk driving accident and only joined the mission so that Cutter would make sure she was taken care of, he's infected with a highly deadly Synthetic Plague, and trapped aboard a malfunctioning space shuttle in deep space almost immediately after. He does survive, but only barely and the incident has profound effects on his health and causes him to suffer Body Horror. Still, he remains cheerful in spite of it all and almost never stops to angst.
  • Jerkass Woobie:
    • Lovelace. She's a massive Jerkass to the crew and treats them like crap, but she's so broken from everything she's been through that it's hard not to feel sorry for her.
    • Hilbert. He's undeniably a monster, but once you learn why he's like that it's impossible not to feel a little bit sorry for him.
    • Eiffel. He's insensitive, self-centered, and a convicted felon, but as mentioned above he goes through so much trauma that it's impossible not to feel bad for him.
  • Love to Hate:
    • Cutter. He's undeniably a monster and he crosses the Moral Event Horizon so many times that he's practically playing jump rope with it, but his creepily charismatic Faux Affably Evil personality makes him a very memorable antagonist and always an entertaining presence.
    • Jacobi. He's undeniably an asshole, but he's such an unrepentantly dickish Troll that he's very fun to watch and a fan favorite. Being a legitimately competent badass doesn't hurt.
    • Colonel Kepler. He's a smug, militaristic black ops soldier complicit in many of Goddard's worst crimes, but his ability to alternate between being funny and genuinely threatening in a dime and his legitimate competence makes him very entertaining.
    • Hilbert. He's an amoral Mad Scientist with a serious Lack of Empathy, but his creepily stoic and sardonic personality, his moments of being Not So Above It All, and his genuinely tragic backstory all adds up to a complex and surprisingly sympathetic (if still undeniably monstrous) character.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Hilbert crosses it when he betrays the crew and tries to murder them all after discovering the alien signals. Later reveals show he crossed the line way before the series even started, as he'd been killing people for the sake of his research and on Cutter's orders long before the start of the series.
